I spent some time today going through old photos with my Dad of our family from Ireland. My Grandmothers Family is from #portlaw while my Grandfathers Family is from #Galway. Originally our family settled in Hartford CT before they made their way to Albany. Here are some photographs of my beautiful ancestors… my Great Grandparents Edward and Margaret (Maloney) Shaughnessy, Grandparents James and Winifred (Tiernan) Shaughnessy, I believe the woman in Uniform was my Grandfathers Cousin in “Paddy’s uniform”, Pat Moloney, Peggy Moloney& Joe’s wedding, David Moloney who is Gr. Gram’s brother that was tragically killed in an “industrial accident”, the wedding party and family of Peggy Moloney who was Gr. Grams Sister, Gr. Grampy Shaughnessy, Sonny Powers? who was Gramp Shaughnessy’s Cousin (they settled in The Liverpool Area)… sharing this with the odd chance that someone will know someone that might know someone that could connect me to long lost relatives. #portlaw #liverpool #shaughnessy #moloney #geneology #powersfamily #irishimmigrants #irishamericanhistory #galway #irishfamily #familyhistory #1920s #1914 #familysearch (at Portlaw) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU3RjsOLwUZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

A Shell
The shell of a former school and hall in Portlaw, County Waterford. Dating from 1854, these and many other buildings in the village were designed by one of the most prolific architects of the era, John Skipton Mulvany. He was much patronised by the Quaker Malcolmson family, responsible for various industrial businesses spread across south-east Ireland including in Portlaw. Once part of a cotton…

#SundayMorning Lady Waterford by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: This is Lady Waterford (front left), in what may have been a specially designed invalid carriage, with members of the Beresford family and other guests at Curraghmore House, Portlaw, Co. Waterford. Found this great diary entry from Sunday, 2 June 1895, mentioning Lady Waterford: "... She is a great invalid & was given up by the Drs a year ago so it is a marvel she is still alive..." We originally thought this photo was circa 1900, but mogey and John Spooner found that Lady Waterford/Blanche, Marchioness of Waterford died in February 1897. Even better, John Spooner came back with information that this photo was taken at the celebration of the coming of age of the Marquis of Waterford. See the comments below for details... Date: August/September 1896 NLI Ref.: POOLEIMP 409

Well done to our very own Paul 'Frank' Shankey who won the Portlaw Strictly Come Dancing in Co. Waterford. Paul was always very nibble on his feet went he lined out for the ‘Wood back in the day. His fancy footwork was evident back then as he danced around the opposition and played accurate balls into the inside forwards who had little to do after his mastery. We are all so proud of Paul and cannot wait to hear the stories of his latest trophies … even though his modestly will mean that we will have to drag it out of him. #TrophyBlasting
Regards, Shane Russell & the lotto committee

An Irish Jack Sparrow impersonator who married the ghost of a pirate has revealed she has split from her 300-year-old hubby.
Earlier this year Amanda Sparrow Large, 46, said she’d found her “soulmate” in a Haitian pirate from the 1700s who was executed for thieving on the high seas.
The loved-up couple were legally married by a shaman priest in a boat off the Irish coast in international waters.
But now the mum from Drogheda, Co Louth, has revealed the unlikely union is over.
Posting on social media she said: “So I feel it’s time to let everyone know that my marriage is over.

“I will explain all in due course but for now all I want to say is be VERY careful when dabbling in spirituality, it’s not something to mess with…”
Pirates Of The Caribbean superfan Amanda shelled out €6,000 changing her name and look and worked for a time as a Jack Sparrow impersonator. She had her name changed by deed poll from Amanda Large and had replica tattoos, dreadlocks and gold teeth fitted to look like the character played by Johnny Depp.

Eaten Bread is Soon Forgotten
Portlaw, County Waterford and its association with the Malcolmson family have been mentioned here before (see: A Shell, June 28th 2017). The Malcolmsons were of Scottish Presbyterian origin but in the mid-18th century one branch became members of the Quaker community. A son of this line, David Malcolmson, settled in Clonmel, County Tipperary where from 1793 onwards he became involved in the corn…
