#SundayMorning Lady Waterford by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: This is Lady Waterford (front left), in what may have been a specially designed invalid carriage, with members of the Beresford family and other guests at Curraghmore House, Portlaw, Co. Waterford. Found this great diary entry from Sunday, 2 June 1895, mentioning Lady Waterford: "... She is a great invalid & was given up by the Drs a year ago so it is a marvel she is still alive..." We originally thought this photo was circa 1900, but mogey and John Spooner found that Lady Waterford/Blanche, Marchioness of Waterford died in February 1897. Even better, John Spooner came back with information that this photo was taken at the celebration of the coming of age of the Marquis of Waterford. See the comments below for details... Date: August/September 1896 NLI Ref.: POOLEIMP 409

I want to tell you about Bess of Hardwick, the best known and most documented Tudor noblewoman.
(I wrote quite a bit here yesterday and then I finally wrote an AskHistorians answer I'd been sitting on, so I'm feeling Productive. This is also what I immediately think of when there's any discussion of what marriage could/should be like in historical fiction.)
Elizabeth Hardwick was born in the 1520s, obscurely enough that we don't know exactly which year - her parents were of the gentry, untitled but with more than 500 acres of land. Her first marriage was in 1543, to the thirteen-year-old Robert Barlow/Barley; in later years she said that this wedding took place when she was "of tender years", which inclines me to the later date generally given for her birth - 1527 - and made her 16, close to the same age as her husband. (Some make her 20 or even 23 at the time instead, based on what her son-in-law said of her age when she died, but I think this is more convincing both because it's what she said, and because a double-teen marriage is a lot more likely.) This was quite a good match, because Bess's father had died, her mother remarried, and money was very tight for them, while the Barlows had a big estate; it also benefited young Robert's family because his father was on his deathbed, and this prevented him from becoming someone else's ward. Wardships could be and were bought, and a guardian could easily make his ward marry his own child, annexing their lands into his own if Robert died without issue - as he did in 1544, leaving Bess a teenaged widow. His lands went back to his family, as his father had planned, and Bess expected to received her jointure - but his uncle refused it, and she had to fight for it in chancery court, in a case she personally brought in 1546, which is pretty impressive for a 19-year-old. She won.
She may have joined the household of Henry and Frances Grey, Marquess and Marchioness of Dorset, after Robert died - yes, Jane Grey's parents, related to the royal family. There was a distant relation between the Greys and the Hardwicks, and it was very normal for youths of the gentry/nobility to be educated by relatives of higher status while also performing service for them. While she was possibly there, she met Sir William Cavendish, a courtier twenty years older than her who'd already had two wives, and they married in 1547 at the Greys' home. This was another big step up: not only did he have a lot of money, he was a knight and a public figure. They seem to have been a loving and happy couple, and worked closely together in managing their estates. They also had eight children, and it's clear how high she'd risen by the godparents they chose: Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, the Greys, and other members of the upper nobility. Unfortunately, all their money wasn't enough - they liked buying property and building on it, and William embezzled from the crown to pay for it. Fortunately(?), while he ended up in trouble in 1557, he was very ill and died shortly after, so no treason charges or the like were made. He had settled his estates on Bess to prevent the wardship problem (their oldest son was 7), leaving her with considerable personal property.
Bess worked her connections to protect herself and her family, and two years later she married Sir William St. Loe, another wealthy courtier (and only ten years older than her). This brought her into actual court circles rather than the country nobility, and she would become a gentlewoman of the privy chamber for Elizabeth I - a position of power and influence close to the queen. Correspondence also shows this marriage to have been loving, and although they had no children, he took an interest in hers. Due to bad relations with his brother, who appears to have tried to poison Bess, he left his property to her rather than letting it go back to his family when he died in 1565.
Her final marriage was to George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford (only a few years older than her), one of the richest men in England and the eighth-highest secular peer in the kingdom. Talbot was attracted to her, adoring, even, and she negotiated to keep a certain amount of the property she brought to the marriage as her own even in his lifetime; his oldest son married one of her daughters and vice versa, ensuring the passage of both of their estates jointly to their children. Things would fall apart when they were chosen to house Mary, Queen of Scots, during her English semi-imprisonment, which put incredible stress on their relationship and their finances - Mary had to be kept in royal style and Elizabeth was not always very good about paying for it, so Bess and George often did so out of pocket. Bess also arranged for one of her daughters to marry Mary's brother-in-law, which infuriated the queen and could have made Bess eventually grandmother to the next queen of England. In 1583, Bess and George separated acrimoniously, requiring the privy council to intervene and divide their assets. He died in 1590; she managed her own affairs at the end of her life, struggling with her sons, and died in 1608.
We know a lot more about Bess than other noblewomen of her generation, and due to some of her circumstances she was exceptional (most did not have quite the same level of control of their family property), but at the same time, much of this was fairly normal, though on a larger scale: most noblewomen worked connections to handle legal troubles, arranged advantageous marriages for their children, tried to marry up themselves, managed the building and upkeep of their property, and so on. "Self-fashioning" is a big thing in material culture right now - looking at how people, particularly women, showed or improved their social standing with clothing, furnishings, vehicles, etc. - and we can track a lot of hers because we have Bess's accounts, plus the incredible embroideries of Hardwick Hall, the ones she had commissioned and the ones she made with Mary QoS. So she is a good place to look for all sorts of gender, marriage, class, etc. issues of the period!

Episode 1 : A Breath of Fresh Air
Hermione Potter debuts on London’s marriage market as a new gossip sheet sets high society abuzz. Draco, the eligible Duke of Wiltshire, returns to town.
Chapter 1 : A Tea Party
Dearest Readers, in years past, I would have welcomed you to place your bets on the upcoming social season, for indeed, this would be the very day that every young lady would be presented.
They would wear their finest gowns, their mamas proud at their side, and they would enter the room, announced officially to the ton, and subject themselves to the ever watchful gaze of our illustrious Queen.
But alas, it is not to be this year, as our Queen is not in the best of health, but we shall all wish that she returns to us soon, for indeed, what is the social season without our Queen presiding over it?
Instead, dearest readers, we shall have to make certain allowances, and accept that the first event of the season shall be one that men will not even take part of. No, instead it will be a Grand High Tea in the Gardens of one of the loveliest houses here in London.
Our host, the Marchioness of Waterford, otherwise known as the Lady Andromeda Black Tonks, with a number of her closest friends, all of whom also hold the Queen’s ear. While she may not be here in truth, the Queen’s presence will still hold a heavy weight.
It might not be the Queen’s gaze upon you, but surely, a few whispers into her ear…
Ah, well. Surely every young Lady can survive something as simple as a tea. We shall see, dear readers. We shall indeed see.
Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown
