Well if you can't swim the channel you might aswel cruise it instead..

Sannes brother happens to be the deputy captain on Virgin cruises and they happened to be departing from porthsmouth to Amsterdam which is where Sannes mum lives. It all seemed too good to be true that the timings lined up, but we jumped on board and spent 2 nights on the ship, resilient lady.

I've never been on a cruise before and I have to say it was all quite overwhelming. We enjoyed some free champagne and all of the unlimited food. When we stopped in Amsterdam we took a walk around the city and then caught a train to Sannes mums house where we spent another night.

It was a fun way to get to Amsterdam and was great to meet some of Sannes family too!

Sorry, but I have just seen a post in which you tagged something about parallels between Wuthering Heights and Mansfield Park. I don't think I had ever made the connection before, but I love the thoughts that I'm getting from that idea. May I ask your own thoughts on the matter? So, I actually reread Mansfield Park precisely to look for parallels with Wuthering Heights, and I was thinking mainly of Fanny and Heathcliff: of course you can't think of two more different characters, but the "poor child gets adopted from a wealthy family-gets used and abused-deeply loves one and only one member of said family-becomes the prominent member of the household after the other members have died/been degraded” journey is very similar. Even if they react to these circumstances in the opposite way, and Fanny's low status at Mansfield is not caused by racism, still it's remarkably low for an Austen heroine; I'd say she's the only one of them who comes from a place of true poverty (I mean, her family does have a maid, but).

And generally, the whole thing boils down to MP being Austen's most bitterly realistic novel. One thing that strucks me in the Brontë sisters' novels is the importance given to children and teens, and how realistically they are portrayed. WH is based entirely on the assumption that the enviroment they grow in has enormous impact on children and childood has enormous impact to whom someone becomes as an adult, which is! such a modern concept! but I digress.

Contrast to Austen novels in which children basically do not exist as people aha, except for Mansfield Park. Where you have two whole chapters dedicated to little Fanny's first days at Mansfield and her early teens, as well as her cousins', and I was surprised by the realism of her behaviours and feelings (like the whole scene in which Edmund helps her writing a letter). I think that may be because one of the main themes of the book is the importance education has in shaping a person's character... kind as in Wuthering Heights (see: Susan being a sensible and clever young girl, who has terrible manners because she was neglected by her mother and grew up in a chaotic household, much like Hareton, who ended up being a brute despite his kind nature because of the abuse he endured, and both of them escaping their situation as soon as someone is willing to help them).

Also you could say that the whole story revolves around the titular estate, and it ends with a heroine sealing away any chance of ever leaving for the outside world via marriage to a cousin (Fanny refuses mr Crawford and is proven right/spends some months in Porthsmouth and it's a nightmare; Cathy 2's only chance of going away is marriage to mr Lockwood, which would be pretty much ridiculous), but I didn't give much thought to it, honestly.
