Hi there! I hope your day’s been going well :)
Could you maybe write something with Spencer where Reader faints? Feel free to ignore this if you’re not up for it!!
thank u for ur request! fem!reader, 1.6k
"It's so hot," you say, startled. The lobby of the hotel had been blissfully air-conditioned. The difference hits you immediately.
"Don't worry about blazers or professional attire," Hotch says, though he quickly amends, "within reason."
You take off your jacket and follow the herd of the BAU into the black SUVs. The SUVs are even hotter than the outdoors, blistering ovens of heat that have you feeling nauseous instantaneously. Spencer rubs your arm with the back of his hand swiftly —it's a friendly touch to say he's here, but it's quick to prevent any unnecessary added heat.
It's August in Texas, 107 degrees Fahrenheit. Emily smells distinctly of sunscreen from the front passenger seat. Derek, behind the wheel, looks hot around the collar. Spencer looks as though he wishes he'd had a haircut before he came, chin length curls tucked tight behind his ears.
Despite this, none of them complain beyond the general whine every now and then. You try very hard to shut up and focus on the case with them, but as the day goes on, bumping you from hot car to hot crime scene (with all inclusive smells of gore!), you feel wobbly on your feet.
"Spence?" you ask, sitting in a hard-backed chair in the police precinct.
"Yeah?" He doesn't look away from the geographical profile he's building. You're supposed to be helping, but your notes are half-hearted, likely useless. "What?"
"Do you have any water?"
He pushes a pin into the left of the map and grabs a ruler. "No, sorry. There's a staff room by the bullpen, the secretary said to help ourselves. Actually, she said to 'go ham.'"
"Okay. I'll be right back. And I'll be more helpful."
"You're plenty helpful," he murmurs, leaning down to follow the line of his rules with a pencil.
You don't feel helpful, you feel awful. Head heavy, eyes aching, every step sends a jolt through your teeth and jaw, your skull like a mashed potato. You know you're a poor sight with sweat wetting your hair and a crawling sensation between your legs and the fabric of your pants.
Letting yourself into the staff room, you're unsurprised to find a bone dry water cooler and a crate of water bottles with only one remaining. Spencer needs a drink too, and he has a thing about germs. You frown at the water bottle as though that might duplicate it, but when it doesn't, you're forced to take it and put it under your arm. You look around for a mug to at least have some tap water no matter how ill-advised that may be. They're all dirtied in the sink and on tables. Fuck.
Spencer is super, super lovely to you. You wonder sometimes if he might ask you out, or at least want to, but most of the time you're sure it's just a little extra friendliness because he knows how it feels to be the youngest on the team, how patronised or lonely it gets. And the weight of trying to prove yourself every mission, it's almost as heavy as your head.
"Hey," Spencer says as you open the conference room door. "I think I've worked something out. Could you call Garcia for me? I've got dry-erase marker on my hands."
"Got this for you," you say, offering him the bottle. He takes it without looking.
"Thanks. Are you feeling any better? I know you can be sensitive to the heat."
"Maybe we can get portable fans on the FBI budget next year," you say wistfully, pushing a chair in at the table. You lean on it to grab the phone in the middle of a sea of papers and cases and jackets, black spots popping up in your vision. "My head's rushing."
"Hey, guys," Emily says, sounding strangely chipper as she and Hotch trudge in. Her hair is in a tight ponytail away from her face.
You try to greet them and end up hanging your head.
"Y/N," Spencer chokes, alarmed.
You slump forward over the chair, desperate to keep your footing and failing. Your shin knocks into the chair and your hands grasp at the top of it, but you can't hold yourself up any longer, knocking your face into the chair as you collapse. A cheap tent in a strong breeze, you fall with little more than a weak sigh.
You're hurting a lot when you come to, blinking like your lashes have been brushed with glue. The lights have been turned off, and a blissful chill soaks your hairline. Someone presses a water bottle to your lips and lifts your head. You drink half the contents in three gulps and get laid down again with the utmost care.
"She's coming around," Hotch says.
Your neck aches propped over a leg. Two deft hands hold your head still.
"Don't move too much," Spencer says, his voice odd. You blink as his face moves into view upside down. "An EMT is on the way, okay? You passed out."
You can't find your voice. Spencer strokes your cheek with his thumb, says, "Hey, can you hear me? Let's hear your voice. Talk to me."
"You don't sound like yourself," you say hoarsely, each word tenuous. You wince at the bruising heat that radiates from your nose with each word.
"I'm worried about you," Spencer admits. "It makes it hard to stay objective."
"No, you sound funny."
"I'm worried," he repeats. His smile is strained.
"She's okay," Hotch says.
You realise Emily's got your hand in hers when she squeezes it. "Have you had anything to drink today?" she asks you, fondly incredulous.
"No, she hasn't, and I didn't say anything about it. I'm an idiot. I'm so sorry, Y/N," Spencer says.
"Y/N's responsible for her own preservation, Reid. And it's been a tough case, with the heat. Let's not blame anyone for anything." You press your chin to your chest to see Hotch's anxious frown. "We will be having a discussion about this later."
You turn your face into Spencer's thigh. "Oh."
"Don't close your eyes," Hotch says. He employs a firm, boss-like tone that has you rushing to follow orders. "You hit your head."
"I don't feel well," you complain, wanting to close your eyes.
"Considering your behaviour," Spencer says, one of his hands trailing down your face, neck, and collar, where he rests it genially, "you likely have a mild to moderate concussion. And you're dehydrated, so you'll be feeling the effects more severely."
"Why haven't you been drinking?" Emily asks.
"I just…" You blink sluggishly. "I don't know… We don't take anything that isn't coffee with us places and…" You lean your cheek into Spencer's hand, not quite connecting that it's his hand, or that you're laying on the precinct floor. "They only had one bottle in the staff room."
"Why didn't you drink it?" Spencer asks softly.
"I knew you hadn't had anything to drink, either."
"We could've shared," he says, sounding genuinely confused.
"You don't like sharing stuff like that. Germs."
Spencer's voice is barely above a whisper, "I wouldn't care about your germs, Y/N. They're your germs."
You don't have time to ask him what he means, but you've ample time to think about it on loop when the EMT arrives. He props you up, checking you over thoroughly, shining a light in your eyes and deeming you concussed.
"You don't have to see a doctor," the EMT advises. "But we're happy to take you to the hospital if that's what you want."
"Yes," Spencer says, as you say, "No."
Spencer puts a hand on your shoulder blade. It is an extremely forward move on his part, so unlike him that you recognise how odd it is despite your foggy mind. "She should go."
"She fainted, Spencer," Emily says.
"Exactly! So she should go to the hospital and–"
"I didn't break anything," you say, waving a shaky hand at the small but concerned crowd of people you've attracted.
"Luckily," the EMT says. "Drink plenty of water and take it easy. Don't be afraid to call again if you feel worse."
Hotch walks the EMT out, needing to take a phone call. Emily goes with him, promising to return with a dry shirt for you to wear now that yours has been soaked at the collar by the water they'd been cooling you down with while you were unconscious.
Spencer settles practically knee to knee with you in two of the uncomfortable chairs, his assessing gaze frankly perturbing.
"You'd share germs with me?" you ask.
Spencer's hand leaps across the gap to yours where it rests on your knee. His eyes, brown and sweet, have all the light of a blinding smile as his lips quirk into something more sheepish. "If it stopped you from fainting, yeah. And even if it didn't, I'd be stupid to care about germs when I…"
You breathe out slowly. "When you what?"
"Well," he says, looking down at your hands. "I guess I just wouldn't mind your germs, that's all."
If he's saying what you think he's saying, he's doing it in the most Spencer Reid way possible. Concussed, your charisma fails you. You've no wit to tease him with.
You fold your hand around his. "Thanks for catching me," you say gently.
He squeezes your fingers clumsily. "You're welcome. But it was actually mostly Emily."

"I told you we should have bought that air conditioner when it was on sale!" You grumble in bed. Your portable tower fan was fighting for its life, failing to cool you both down.
You've both been tossing and turning in bed for over an hour. You’re in the midst of a heatwave this week, and although it usually cools down in the evenings, there was no reprieve tonight. To make matters worse, it was also humid.
"That air conditioner was still $300 even with the discount," Namjoon points out. "Besides, it's a rare hot day where we live. We just need to tough it out for two more days and then it will be cooler again. It would just take up unnecessary space! Plus, who knows how much that thing would add to our gas bill?”
Damn him and his logic. It was great most of the time, but for this particular hot evening, you hated it.
“They make one of those energy-saver models. We shouldn’t have to suffer like this,” you pout.
“Baby, we need to lower our carbon footprint. This excessive heat is an effect of climate change,” he opines, rolling over to wrap his arm around your waist. The warmth radiating from his skin makes you recoil.
"Ugh, you’re too hot." You swat his hand away, unable to tolerate his current body temperature. Snuggling up to him was great in the winter but during the summer? Not so much.
Feeling rejected, he gets up to head toward the bathroom. “That’s it! I’m taking a cold shower.”
“Again?” He’d already taken three today. “What happened to lowering our carbon footprint?”
“It’s just a quick one. Besides, do you have better ideas to cool off?”
You didn’t.
While Namjoon takes a shower, you suddenly notice your shirt and sleep shorts becoming stickier by the second. In a moment of desperation, you get up to open the windows wider, hoping to increase air circulation in the room. Afterward, you return to bed, strip down to your panties, and flop onto your stomach.
Namjoon shuffles out of the bathroom a few minutes later. Then, you feel the mattress dip and his hand landing on your ass cheek with a smack.
“Woah–what–”
Your head whips around to find a look of hunger in his eyes. “Were you trying to surprise me?”
“Chill,” you reply with a laugh. “It was just too hot. I had to get rid of some layers.”
“Mm-hm,” he hums skeptically. “You should sleep naked more often.” He continues to squeeze your flesh, his voice husky.
You snort. “Doubtful. You know how much I love my pajamas! Besides, sleeping naked is your thing.”
"I know, but this is an unexpected treat," he purrs. He starts kissing the small of your back and then moves up your spine. The feel of his lips on your skin instinctively turns you on, but if there was anything that made you feel un-sexy, it was heat and humidity.
Namjoon didn’t care. The way he touched and kissed your body, he only had one thing in his mind and he was determined to make it happen.
You sigh, turning to face him. “You know I don’t like having sex in this weather.”
He stares at you with deep, dark eyes, already blown out from arousal. “But you don’t even need to do anything. Just lay there and I’ll do all the work,” he offers. “Please?”
In this heat, excessive movement would only make you more hot and sweaty than you already were.
As for his generous offer to pleasure you without the expectation of reciprocation, how could you refuse? The idea of being a pillow princess for the night was enticing. You nod and acquiesce. “Fine. Continue.”
Grinning, he dips down to kiss you. You kiss him back, sliding your tongue along his, savoring him. He moves to place a trail of kisses down your neck and onto your chest, pausing to flick each hard nipple with his tongue.
You’re nearly lost in the moment when you feel him strip your panties off, his mouth watering to taste you. You put your hands over to block him, attempting to cover up.
“No, I’m all gross down there,” you protest.
Now it was his turn to swat your hands away. “I don’t care. I want you like this.”
He lowers his head before you can say another word. With one broad lick, your back arches off the mattress with a gasp. Weather aside, your body can’t help it. He knew how to make you feel good.
The moans and sounds of satisfaction he hums against your flesh make you writhe against his mouth uncontrollably. He flits his tongue over in slow, rhythmic motions. Once your breaths grow ragged, he rubs the pad of his thumb over your clit in rapid circles, making you cum with a harsh cry.
He kisses your inner thigh before rising to capture your lips. You could taste traces of your arousal on him, but he didn't stop there. His fingers delve right back into your cleft, stroking over your clit and skimming the opening. As you groan with your lips pressed to his, you greedily grind your hips in response.
“Want more?” He mumbles against your lips.
“Yes,” you breathe out.
Smirking, he fingers you leisurely, building your need. You shudder as he cups you in his hand, his middle and forefinger sliding lazily into you. His palm rubs against your clit, his fingertips stroking over sensitive tissues above.
“Fuck, you’re so wet for me,” he rasps.
Whatever he was doing felt inadequate to you now. You needed to feel all of him. “Joon, please,” you beg.
“Please, what?” He teases.
“I want you now.” You reach between you and palm him through his boxers.
“Do you? I thought you hated fucking in the heat.”
You let out a low growl. "I know what I said! I just...please." You curl your fingers around him, giving him a nice squeeze, hoping he'll submit. He bites down on his lower lip, stifling a moan.
In retaliation, he applies gentle pressure to the roof of your core, causing it to swell and inching you closer to the edge.
“Tell me what you want.”
It took you a moment to come back to your senses before uttering, “I want to ride you.”
His eyebrows lift in surprise. Yes, you didn’t want to be all sweaty but you were turned on to the point of no return.
“You sure? I don’t mind doing all the work.” He continues to tease that same bundle of flesh in you that he’s so intimately familiar with. You clench your insides in response, not wanting to cum just yet.
You slip your hand past his waistband, thumbing the precum beading on the tip. You needed him inside you, but you wanted to be in control.
“Mm, no. I want to be on top.” You tilt your head up and tug at his lip with your teeth.
He laughs low and huskily. “Whatever my lady wants...”
The moment he pulls away to sit up against the headboard, you spring up and pull his boxers off. You reach for his cock, gripping him firmly, pumping him from root to tip. He tilts his head, eyes rolling back in a groan.
You knew his body well, too; knew what he needed and desired. While you straddle him, he catches your hips and looks up at you.
“Ride me hard, yeah?”
The air in the room was thick and you’d be dripping in sweat by the time you were done with him. Still, your core clenches reflexively at the challenge.
He releases you, spreading his arms wide to grip the sides of the headboard. His biceps bulged with the pose. Seeing his bare chest glistening with sweat, his abdomen tightening in anticipation–it turned you on wildly.
You reach over to the side of his head for balance and wrap your free hand around his cock. A muscle in his neck twitches as you rub the tip against your folds, back and forth, coating him with your slick.
You let the first inch push in, letting it stretch you before slowly bearing down, drawing out a moan as you feel him so deep in you.
“Fuck,” he bit out, shuddering once you take him to the hilt.
You lift again, slowly, making you both feel every nuance of that mind-numbing friction. Then, you slam back down, the fullness, the connection, was too delicious to contain. He shifts restlessly, his hips moving in a tight circle, wanting to feel more of you.
“You feel so good,” you whisper, stroking his cock with your aching cunt. Sliding up and down his length.
“That’s the spot, baby. Make me cum,” he bit out, his knuckles white from his grip on the headboard. You wondered if he was just holding on or physically restraining himself from reaching for you.
Your hands snake up to your chest, cupping your tits and tugging on your nipples to egg him on.
“Gimme,” he demands softly, his mouth hanging open, beckoning you to lean closer. You oblige and watch as his cheeks hollow in suction. His teeth graze your nipple, making your insides clench more tightly around him.
You drop your hips again, putting the weight of your body behind it, surging through with a groan. You loved the feel of him.  His breath puffs out of his lungs with every plunge. You were hot, he was sweltering. Together, you were both radiating heat like a furnace. Up…down…up…down. Your thighs, ass, stomach, and core tightening, burning with every lift, squeezing him from root to tip.
You fucked him with everything you had. His breaths hissing out through clenched teeth once your ass claps against his thighs.
Unable to hold back any longer, he releases his grip on the bed. He grabs you by the waist and restrains your movements, holding himself deep.
He squints his eyes at you. “My turn.”
“Yes,” you gasped, wound up tight with anticipation.
His cock pushes into you. You whimper, your entire body thrumming with excitement. He held your hands down, his thighs between yours, keeping you spread wide so he could sink deep. Over and over. His thrusts were unfaltering, determined.
His jaw clenches, brows furrowing as he inches closer to his climax.
“Harder, Namjoon,” you choke out.
You hold onto him for dear life while he pounds relentlessly into you. You hear his breath catch on every muffled groan while he fucks into you.
“Yes, yes, yes…” You sob helplessly with every slam of his hips.
“Fuck, fuck, I’m cum—ahh…” He presses his forehead against yours before finishing his sentence. A long, deep growl rumbles from him as his hips jerk, gasping your name.
His spurting triggers the hypersensitive nerves in you. Next thing you know, your body shivers from another intense orgasm. You let out a long, drawn-out sigh, feeling relief flow out of you.
You collapse in his arms, your flushed cheeks resting on his shoulder. You were both panting and covered in sweat.
He lifts you gingerly off him, setting you onto the mattress. You lift your head lazily and turn to him. You reach out blindly, suddenly feeling how damp the sheets were beneath you.
“Shit, did we sweat that much?” You sit up to inspect the damage.
“Yes. And you also squirted all over me,” he laughs.
Your hand flies up to your mouth in surprise. “Oh my god, I did? For real?”
He nods, still laughing. “Yeah. I felt it gush out of you.”
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be. It was fucking hot,” he replies enthusiastically. He reaches for his boxers and moves toward you to clean you up.
You wave him off. “Nah, it’s useless. I’m going to hop in the shower.”
You roll out of bed and walk to to the bathroom in shaky legs. When you stop to grab a towel from the linen closet, you notice him following behind you.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“I thought the shower was an invitation,” he smiles michievously.
“Don’t,” you warn, giving him a stern look. Eventually, a laugh slips out.
“I can keep my hands to myself.” He says innocently. “Besides, we’re in a drought. We need to conserve water.”
You roll your eyes at this practicality and shake your head. “You and your water and energy conservation.”
“Hey, if it wasn’t for me not buying that air conditioner, we wouldn’t have had mind-blowing sex tonight…and you wouldn’t have squirted like that,” he chuckles.
Touché.
But instead of giving him the satisfaction, you glower playfully at him and smack him on his bare ass, making him howl in laughter.

I finally caved and bought an evaporative cooler for my un-air conditioned apartment and it’s fucking magical. Why did I wait so long to buy this. Why do I just let myself suffer for heaven’s sake.
If you also live in a dry climate, like I do, 10/10 recommend a portable evaporative cooler. Or DIY one with a fan and a bucket.

"It's not the heat that gets you."
There's a post going across my dashboard which talks about how awful the heat's getting - and reminding people "in the south" to be kind to people's suffering in the heat as a result of the climate crisis.
That's cool. However, Europe. Hi. I'm Kef and I live in The Netherlands - and anything past 78°F / 25° C can feel unbearable to me. My physical shape aside, let me introduce you to why myself and many others "can't deal" and can't just "hang a damp cloth in front of a fan". ---- 1. Climate
Tumblr media
Up above is the "Feels Like" temperature data taken from zoom.earth - it shows that Europe lies much higher on the Earth's crust in reference to the equator than the US does, and my point with it is to show that, despite being Quebec's neighbors to the East, the temperature isn't as cold as it arguably "should" be.
2. Humidity In part thanks to the North Atlantic Current, things are considerably more warm and damp - but it didn't use to be as warm as it gets now. Entire countries in Europe are built around a cooler climate - right down to infrastructure - with the main focus being heat retention rather than dispersion.
Over in the Netherlands, many living spaces are rectangles with small windows, most of which do not open upwards and rather move sideways, like in this image taken in Amsterdam:
Tumblr media
Shallow roofs. Heat rises, gets stuck. Brick retains heat. These living spaces don't air out easily despite the Dutch loving to complain about drafts. ("'Het tocht hier.") But it gets worse: no ceiling fans, no AC, no window fans. Imagine 70% humidity, 78° F without any of that.
3. Staying Cool I wish I was hyperbolic, but even in more modern housing it's not often you'll find windows suited for "window units" for either air conditioning or a fan - and speaking of fans, since the windows don't accommodate a decent unit to suck and blow, you're stuck with stand-alone fans - and they suck in a completely different way, since at worst they blow around warm, damp air in a warm, damp area. This is why 'swamp coolers', or hanging damp things in front of the fan don't work well. Terrible when it's already humid. And let's not talk about AC. People have to opt for installing heat pumps or mount units outside their house - you'll barely see window units here. While the portable units are awful, they'll have to do. I have one. It's half the size of a washing machine. I already don't want to use mine for environmental reasons, but I also don't want to suffer. Brings me to the next problem, though: 4. Whoops, All Electric With the push away from natural gases; towards 'green' energy; towards electric vehicles ... well, the power grid is fucked. underground all at once. Electricity is procured and consumed rapidly - we'll start seeing brown-outs in the next decade (article in Dutch); and new companies are already on a waiting list to be hooked up to electricity (article in Dutch). While the national government is aware and is taking steps (official statement, Dutch) - we can't exactly dig up all the power-lines we buried, and let's not forget that Amazon bought up half the electricity-production from the wind farm in the North Sea to "be green" - because if capitalism stands for anything, it's sustainability. /s In addition to the power lines, we can't easily fix the infrastructure built around a colder climate (no, seriously, the roads will melt and bridges and railways suffer from the heat expanding the metal too much) either - because it takes time and maintenance, and we're kind of running out of the former. 5. The Point There are places, countries, far better equipped to dealing with one specific climate over the other. Please let folks complain: let's not having a pissing contest over it and understand their plight; accept that the climate crisis is making people suffer (and worse - and I've not even tackled non-Western countries) and people ought to be held accountable. Take care of your homies. Stay hydrated. Condemn the push of "carbon footprint" onto the lower/middle class while the rich fly. Stay cool. You can make a difference, as long as you try. Eat the rich. It's not the heat that gets you, it's the humidity.

Amazing Advantages of Portable Air Cooler Fans
A portable air cooler fan is a device to combine the functions of an air cooler and a fan to provide cool, humidified air and it does not need any ducts or vents. They are often used in homes, offices, and outdoor spaces for a refreshing breeze and to alleviate the discomfort of hot, dry air.
Portable air cooler fans typically draw in ambient air and let the air pass through a water-cooled filter. The filter then evaporates water into the air cools it and adds humidity. A fan then blows out the cooled and humidified air and the entire process provides a refreshing breeze.
Advantages of using a Portable Air Cooler Fan:
Portable air cooler fans have several benefits over traditional air conditioners:
Portability: They are lightweight and compact. This makes them easy to move from room to room or take with you outdoors.
youtube
Easy Setup: There is no need to install any ductwork, simply plug them in and turn them on.
Energy Efficiency: They require much less energy compared to traditional air conditioners.
Humidification: They can add moisture to the air and this helps to relieve dry skin and sinuses.
Environmentally Friendly: They are a better eco-friendly option compared to air conditioners, as they do not use refrigerants. When choosing a portable air cooler you need to consider some factors such as size, cooling capacity, water tank capacity and modern features. Whether you are looking for a portable home dehumidifier or a portable air cooler fan look no further than BRIGHT AIR.

Do any of OCs have fans?
Swanna and Lee have some very nice ceiling fans installed in their tour center. They're all nice, dark shades of pink and purple.
Imogen and her family have this magical mill-like fan that they power their house with.
I don't think they would have ceiling fans in Ice Cream Land, so it's a no for Germafrost, Piano, Sgt. Wolf, and the other Gelatarians.
It's a no for the Marevians as well, since I think Marevi wouldn't have ceiling fans either.
In Botania, I see some places having fans and others not having them, so it varies for the people there. I think that Kira's house wouldn't have fans in it, Bia and Allegra do have ceiling fans made of leaves, and Zora has a portable fan. The Petalstones probably live in homes that don't have fans. Apparently, fans use less electricity than air conditioning, so HVAC isn't big in Botania.
Much like Imogen's, The giant geode house Trey and his family live in is powered by a magical fan. But, since Charm Valley's climate is cooler than Frowntown (at least, as I would imagine), Trey's fan uses Fire magic while Imogen's uses Air.
People in Elegancia and Swan Lake don't tend to have ceiling fans in their homes, but more and more people have installed them recently.
Wait... what was that now?
Oh, so you meant the kinds of fans that are, like, admirers?
Oh, okay! Okay! Let me start over.
Swanna and Lee have some admirers around the world, all of them wondering when they'll see her again. In the Unikingdom, on the Uni-Net, she has a bunch of fans subscribed to her fashion channel.
Sgt. Wolf doesn't really have any fans, but there are some people who have tried to excuse her bad choices. "Oh, she's just trying to protect her pack! She and her pack are a team!"
Germafrost doesn't exactly have any fans either, but the people of Ice Cream Land have begun to look up to him the same way they do to his parents. On the other side of the coin, Waterlily is respected like her parents, but the people of Marevi treat them like close friends rather than monarchs, as I said. As I've also confirmed, Lily goes to a normal school.
Allegra is really popular, both at her school and in her tree. Outside of the Landgang, she has a lot of friends, such as her trapeze partner, who admire her.
The Petalstones have many fans around the world. Most of their fans are, as you would expect, from Botania like them. Botania highly encourages people to be respectful to their favorite musicians, and to not put them on pedestals.

So recently, on TOP of the whole tree falling on house thing, my room had become so hot that Satan himself would have looked at it and said 'get this bitch an icepack.'
We didn't know wtf was going on at first, other than it had been hotter than imploding star outside for about a week. Since my room is cooled by a sad portable ac machine because the windows of my room are too small we initially assumed it just couldn't keep up with a certain level of temperature that could only be measured in units native to the lower circles of hell. Combined with the fact my room is technically an attic because of how the roof heights are staggered and there for much easier heated in general, we just went 'eh sucks but what do you do.'
Since single hose protibel units aren't very effective to begin with I tried shifting it to only be on dehumidify (which would sometimes run the full ace but less often and mostly ran the fan) and took to insulating the exhaust hose in hopes that would help keep heat out of the room.
Unfortunately, over the next few days the temperature inside slowly climbed from high around 78 to 82 and then to 85, and then higher still. Around the 83 mark is when I abandoned my room and began sleeping on the couch in the considerably cooler living room with a window unit.
It seemed like after I have up it just got worse. Why? Because I wasn't constantly babying and changing settings? Was the heat wave just That Bad outside? The entire upper floor- sans one room with a dedicated window until that kept a shut door at all times- had become an unholy swampy mess. The temps on the AC unit itself hit 90. We turned it off thinking itust be doing more harm than good, but it just got worse. The next day I turned it back on, it still read 90s but it not running hadn't had any effect and at least we could use it to dehumidify.
Finally I have had enough. I begin research hoping to find a proper window unity that will actually fit in the tiny ass attic windows of my room. Unsure of numbers I venture into the smother miazma to measure how tall the window can open.
At which point I find the problem.
See, shitty portable ac unit have a hose that vent out the window, but obvious it is much smaller than a whole AC unit. They come with a little attachment to span the window, so you have the window sitting about 6 inches open but edged in thermal seal foam with this little hose block shoved under it nice and snug.
The fucking hose had gotten knocked out of the window.
I have no idea how. It could be an answer as simple as Cat. It could have been the tree impact, since I no longer remember which event happened first with all the shit that keeps storming, it could have gotten loosened when I installed the insulation and a strong wind just knocked it out. But whatever it was, it meant that not ONLY was the window to the 90-100 outside weather with unmerciful nighttime lows in the 80 just happily pouring into the room, but when the unit was running it was sucking in 90° air, spitting out admittedly cooled air on one end, but dumping the heated 120°~ exhaust back into the room.
I immediately reset the hose in the window and tried my best to be sure it was secure. Within minutes the room had dropped to 88. By the time I was finished with breakfast 82. And now, as I write this before I turn in for the night, it has finally fucking returned to a blissful 73.

okay is it hot as balls where you live right now, or did you manage to dodge the heat wave???? because I'm borderline dying over here
Tumblr media
rest in fucking pieces western canada, smh
It is indeed hot as balls (but (and I’m going to sound exactly like people saying “back in the blizzard of x”) not as overwhelmingly hot as the heat dome of ‘21.)
*hugs you with ice blankets!!!!!!!!* I hope it passes soon for you and it’s tolerable soon!! 🫂🧊
RIFP western Canada indeed 🪦
Honestly I am SO PRIVILEGED bc my workplace is kept pretty cool (it’s a grocery store) (I am 🤏 this close to demanding a fight to the death to the next customer who says it’s nice out (to be fair at 7am it is still nice)) and I have a nice setup to keep cool on my break outside/in the car (it’s nearly a shade box and I have ice packs and a mini fan) even if I still get very warm doing my job. (I am taking it slowly so that I hopefully don’t overdo it)
And I drive. And I can usually get going quick enough that the wind from the open windows isn’t too bad. (I try to park where there’s going to be shade over the car when I get off) and bc mum and I aren’t good in the heat we have many fans already so we have several fans going and with the furnace “cool air fan” as well. the house isn’t that bad either with all the fans going (not about to do more than absolutely necessary or bake anything though)
Like. Tbh. At 6-8 degrees cooler. I felt way hotter last week when I got my new tattoo bc I was walking around in high humidity SWEATING SO MUCH and it couldn’t evaporate until I got a long time to sit under strong cool air. Bc I wasn’t just inside all the time like im making a concerted effort to stay inside right now.
But uh. After the heat dome of ‘21. Definitely got Even More fans. (Some rechargeable portable ones) More cooling bandanas. More ice packs.
Despite the horrors, that is still an adorable picture of you 😁 🥰 May the shade cloak you in coolness soon!!
Tumblr media
It’s me!! (With enough fans and access to the concrete floored basement that I can lay on as needed - or sleep on if desperate so far it’s tolerable indoors at least :) …I say as if I haven’t had at least a bit of a headache most days DESPITE holding up at least two of the food/water/sleep triangle of helping to prevent but the Tylenol and Advil are mostly keeping it from getting too bad so far. ) but uh. I’m managing alright as long as I can mostly stay inside I think
(I uh. Totally answered the door in a mesh bra and just the shorts. Oops 🤷🏻‍♂️) it’s. Just about 30 which. Is awful and horrible and Should Not Be. (I remember when 25 was a BIG DEAL bc it wasn’t normal) but at least it hasn’t crossed above 30 yet. And it shouldn’t based on my shitty weather apps’ latest forecast update? We’ll see but I am HOPEFUL!!
Im. Physically. Physically I’m doing better than expected to be honest. But I’ve feared the heat of the summer for a while and EVEN MORE bc of how I had to try to hold it together during the heat dome and how I really couldn’t but had to help mum survive it. I’m mentally not doing great because I am so stressed out and kinda panicking (even though mentally I’m not even panicking im jsut resigned) over it even though I know I’m as prepared as I can reasonably be and I have lots of stuff to help keep cool.
My sister (THE FUCKER) is enjoying it and is actively going outside to lay in the sun 😭 (she wears sunscreen at least)
Uhhhh venty TW for uh. A whole bunch of shit/anything you can think of probably tbh. (Stress, panic, suicide, disordered eating, weight are the big things) Under the cut 😬 (but seriously as long as I survive the heat (and hopefully don’t catch Covid again even though I have to sometimes drink a little bit at work and probably won’t wear a mask (as I do in all indoor spaces) on my ship when I sail tbh) I’ll be okay :))
Like the stress and panic is. Like I don’t mentally feel like I’m panicking. But my body certainly feels like it. It’s awful and horrible and I can’t wait for fall to come. Or the cold wind on the sailboat. Or at least just. Low 20s as the high again.
BC despite what everything in me is saying. I WILL fucking survive this. The alternative doesn’t let me talk to my friends and make silly doodles.
But it’s been a while since I’ve felt so like. Suicidal. but strangely so disconnected from it. (Don’t worry I’ll survive The Thoughts, they’re just an old friend at this point that comes back every once in a while like “STILL? 🙄” even though for the most part I actually like. Want to live and am the happiest I’ve been in my life.
But more than that (bc that’s tolerable and I’m the Most Familiar with that) it’s the fucking. I’m having trouble eating bc of the stress and heat. (I was able to eat my after work dinner though which is good bc I have a board meeting soon)
And with certain people being harder on my food choices than normal I’m just “just lose weight. 50 pounds and nobody could say shit” is PREVALENT and echoing but. I don’t really have the energy to devote to that. And while it may be important to build my strength back up to Portaging again (bc I want to do more paddling) but the thing is there are only two valid reasons right now for me to seek to lose weight (my doctor (who to be fair I rarely see but at least once a year lately for various complaints) hasn’t said anything)
One reason is bc I’d probably fare better in the heat if I were smaller. (The other is maybe I wouldn’t wear out the thighs of my pants so quickly).
But the only two times I tend to ALLEGEDLY lose weight are if I’m stress free walking around on vacation for a While or if I’m basically relapsed into an eating disorder, not otherwise specified. (Nobody knew nobody figured it out but I live i got through it I’m fucking amazing bc I live. And I give myself the fuel to keep going bc fuck it never really worked bc I needed nobody to know so badly that I still needed to eat a bit but even still now even knowing how much harm it could’ve done I’m still fucking proud of the fact that I’ve gone 48 hours without eating anything at all. And I hate that I am. (Or after sailing and then getting covid I did end up losing at least 10, but I don’t keep very good track of my weight generally for my own sanity and wellness)
But unfortunately I don’t have the kind of money to quit my job or reduce hours to part time and just walk everywhere without regard to time.
So I’m at a bit of an impasse.
Im. Mostly okay with my body. It hurts a lot. But generally speaking I can do everything I want or need it to do if I haven’t reached my limit that day.
Im striving for body neutrality and positivity on better days.
Like fuck. Someone else I’d find cute with my body. But because it’s *me*
But it’s fine.
I’ll survive. I’ll read some stuff to cathart.
Hopefully I’ll get some time once it cools down to SHAKE MY ASS to some of the cool new music that I’ve been sent bc tbh I think honestly it would help a LOT. (Finding the joy in movement to letting the music take over FUCK YEAH)
I’ll be okay. It just kinda sucks and the heat just. Seeps in and makes everything worse. Like I’m cooking in all my own insecurities and issues and throwing it on the fire just. Does not help. But I’ll be okay. (I always end up okay)
The scariest part is that I’m not even on any medication that increases heat intolerance. (I probably should be but. Alas)
I’ll be ok.

The American desire to one-up everyone who claims something bad is happening is really not helping with the climate crisis. Being flippant about heatwaves in Europe when it’s “only 78 degrees Fahrenheit” or Seattle where it’s “only 90 out, it gets to 110 in phoenix” really fails to grasp that the danger in a heatwave is not just raw temperature it’s also difference from baseline.
Look. I get it. I’m American. But the worst heat days I remember are not the days when it hit 110+ when I was living in a home with central AC in an inland valley of LA. I was barely outside those days, just jumping from air conditioned location to air conditioned location. And the normal summer days were routinely in the 90s, which it slowly warmed to over the course of several months, allowing my body to gradually adjust.
The hot days I remember were the days when it hit 90 in San Francisco.
My apartment had no AC and attracted heat like an oven. Top floor. Huge, single pane south facing windows overlooking a grocery store parking lot. 1960s insulation. I had money, I spent it on heavy blackout curtains and fans and a $550 portable ac (I did not have the kind of windows you could put a window ac in. Many people in apartments built since the 1950s do not.). The portable AC was not strong enough and it would still be 92 inside my hot, dark cave. And this being summer 2020, there was no where I could go to cool off.
Maybe I could’ve withstood 90 degrees better if I had previously been in LA, gradually acclimating to the heat, but an average summer day in San Francisco only clears 70 if you’re lucky. My body is adjusted to 20 degrees cooler and the heatwave only gives you a day of warmup before the high hits. You need weeks to actually acclimate. That’s the danger of a heatwave. You’re not adjusted.
Heatwaves are incredibly deadly and will be deadlier in the future. Relying on AC is not a sustainable solution, considering it contributes to pollution and is also incredibly reliant on the power grid and being able to pay your electric bill. A massive heat wave with unprecedented energy use is exactly the kind of thing that can take down a grid. Heat kills. We need to be more afraid of heat.
