A ship collage of Rapunzel x Captain Jack Sparrow {TangledTreasure/SunSparrow}.
For this collage, I was inspired by my friend @frie-ice, who has incorporated Disney characters from different media in her collage work.
The first row showcases images of Captain Jack Sparrow and Rapunzel from Kingdom Hearts 3.
The second row features Rapunzel and Jack Sparrow from Disney Speedstorm.
The third row presents Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean films and Rapunzel from Into the Woods (2024). I know this Rapunzel isn't the same as the one from Tangled. I just used it so it could go aesthetically with the live-action theme of POTC.
The fourth row highlights Rapunzel and Jack Sparrow from Disney Infinity.

During August, 1670, Dutch pirate Captain Jelles de Lecat (aka Captain Yellows) set sail from Jamaica as part of Captain Morgan’s retaliatory force against Panama.
Prior to this date, Lecat, with fellow pirate Rock Braziliano, had sailed the Laguna de Terminos in search of plunder, and had arrived back to Port Royal in possession of a captured Spanish merchantman.

After departing Port Royal in August, compelled to join Captain Henry Morgan’s endeavor against Panama, they would briefly stop by Morgan’s base of operations at Ile a Vache for supplies before going forth to descend upon Providence Island. There, they would assist in the defeat of the island’s small Spanish garrison - the first step of Morgan’s plan to sack the city of Panama.

Yep, that's right. I ship Rapunzel and Captain Jack Sparrow. I've been shipping them for a really long time, and I thought it was time to share my vision.
For this collage, I used pictures of the Disney Mirrorverse maps of Corona, home of the Crown Princess Rapunzel, from Act 1 Chapter 1: Into the Woods, and Port Royal, a frequent location of Captain Jack Sparrow, from Act 1 Chapter 2: On Stellar Tides. I also included their Disney Mirrorverse promotional posters, which are actual loading screens in the game.
From the moment they met, Jack couldn't stop talking about treasure, which kind of got on Rapunzel's nerves. But the more they fought the Fractured together, the more they appreciated and relied on each other's abilities. Since the ship name Jackunzel is already taken, lol, I like to call their main ship name TangledTreasure, as a nod to them both. Other ship names include GoldenPirate, GoldenSails, SunSparrow, RogueRadiance, and The Princess and The Pirate.

Imprisoned Hearts: Chapter 10
How I long to never leave these arms The strength of my fragile soul Without their warmth I crumble And thus, I truly shall be no more!
~A.S.; 12 June, 1717
A tear slowly trickles down my face. More follow. I stare into the darkness, lost in the memory of that blissful night… in the memory of us. I draw my knees tighter into my chest and rest my chin atop them, uselessly trying to stave off the ache forming deep in my heart. There is only one word that can describe how much I miss him. Without him, my life has been utterly miserable.
I have never felt so lost.
I am as a ship is without a mast or sails; simply drifting with the tide, praying that someone will come to my rescue before the sea claims me. One might argue that I have already been rescued by Edmund Barclay, but by no means do I consider myself liberated. On the contrary: I have merely traded one floating prison for another. I am still adrift; I am just on a different course.
Has he ever felt this way? That he is merely adrift in this vast ocean known as life, with no land in sight? No hope? Is that why he contrived to marry Elizabeth Swann? Because she rescued him whilst he was adrift?
“Are you still waiting for me?”
I swallow the lump in my throat, trembling against the growing cold, just as I did that night in the Garden.
James… why did you not return to me, my love? You promised…
I do not want to marry Barclay; I do not love him as I have loved James, nor could I ever have with him what I once had with my former lover. Yet I am still torn between the two. I have learnt, unfortunately, that the world is too cruel to allow the purity of true love to flourish. Life, upon the whole, has become complex, and the innocence and simplicity of my youth has been cast aside by propriety and duty. As I found myself at a crossroads when James proposed, I am once again at those same crossroads: duty against desire.
James has done extremely well for himself. He has achieved most of what he has set out to do. I am no great scholar on the ranks of the Royal Navy, but from my understanding, he is but one step away from becoming what he has always dreamt of being: an admiral—just like his father.
His efforts in clearing the West Indies of pirates have earned him the respect of England. He has become a national hero; and it seems his efforts were good enough to merit his right as a suitable prospect for the daughter of a governor, of a lord. I’ve not met one person in London who speaks ill of him. Truly, I cannot be more proud of him… but dare I trust him again with my heart? I am in agony every day without him. I do not think I could endure another rejection; to be let down by the one man whom I had once trusted most.
With Barclay, my future is secure: I shall never be in want for anything and I shall have a respectable title, along with the respect of my parents and the mass. My legacy as the wife of an Earl would undoubtedly leave a greater impact upon the world. Barclay himself has left his mark upon the world of trade and is equally respected by his country and his peers in the House of Lords. I would be a fool not to accept his offer; and truly, I do care for him, in my way. The Earl is a fine young man, in spite of the darkness lurking in his person. But will my feelings for him, confusing as they are, be enough to put an end to my pining anguish for James? Could I truly be content if we were to marry?
Or am I merely selling myself to the highest bidder?
Lingering by the window, I give one final pause to ponder my decision, my gaze fixed upon that spot in the Garden. I relive the memory, feeling everything, hearing everything again: his touch, his body, his voice, the feeling of him inside me, the heat of his breath upon my face, the taste of his kiss. In like manner, I think of the kiss I shared with the Earl, his taste still fresh upon my tongue… his touch upon my flesh, the tenderness of it, of his proposal.
I lift my head.
My gaze drifts to the writing desk behind me, the stillness of the night broken only by the hum of the wind. I rise from my place, wiping the remnants of the tears from my face. I locate my stationary and seat myself in my chair. The moonlight offers sufficient lighting so that I do not need a candle—just as well. The last thing I need is for my parents or younger sisters to discover that I am still awake. Chewing my lower lip, I prepare to finalize my decision, my pen poised over a clean sheet of parchment.
*
“Miss Anna!”
Elsie’s voice drifts along the edges of my dreams, cruelly fracturing the line between my imagination and reality. Her hands shaking me bring me even closer to that particular moment of slumbering purgatory, where I linger between sleep and wakefulness. When she calls to me again, I groan in displeasure, not at all thrilled at having been torn so abruptly from a rather erotic moment between James and me.
Raising my head, I drag my eyes open, grimacing from the stiffness in my neck. I attempt to blink away the fuzzy blur of sleep, hardly registering the rain pelting the glass. I slowly become reoriented to the elegant furnishings of my bedchamber. Then I notice the letter in front of me:
If eternity requires, so shall my faithfulness endure.
Love, A.S. Anna
“Oh…” I groan. I must have fallen asleep at my desk. I twist in my chair, trying to stretch out the tightness in my back. “Elsie, would you—” I begin, but she cuts me off.
“—Miss Anna, you must come quickly! It’s Miss Elizabeth!”

🏴☠️ ⤷ Davy Jones: The Truth Behind The Ruthless Villain
Several of the pirate characters in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise were based off of or inspired by one or a mix of real-life pirates, most of whom sailed during the Golden Age at the beginning of the eighteenth century when the franchise itself was set. This applies to the movie's mystical characters too, like Armando Salazar and Hector Barbossa.
However, concerning the initial trilogy's villain, this is a bit of a grey area.
Whilst there are various myths and direct sources linking to the origins of concepts like Davy Jones' locker and Jones' ship The Flying Dutchman, the actual man himself has very vague historical links (unless, miraculously, he was based on The Monkees singer, which I highly doubt).
But, nonetheless, let us look through the theories...
Davy Jones: The Welsh Pirate
One story suggests that the Davy Jones character came from the frightful pirate David Jones, who sailed during the 1630s in the Indian Ocean. However, there is little known about him, which only makes this concept even more unclear.
"During the 1630s, a pirate captain named David Jones sailed through the Indian Ocean, but many historians believe that he was not famous enough to be remembered for quite a long time." [Kouachi, Mecheri & Zerrouki 25]
There are also rumours of a Welsh pirate Dafydd Jones, though it is unclear if these are the same two people. Either way, there is too little known about the figure(s) in order to make strong connections. But, having said that, if the myths of his ruthlessness are true, there is definitely a connection that can be made to our contemporary Davy Jones.
Davy Jones: The Pub Owner
A slightly stronger theory that has been circling around is the figure of a London pub owner, who would drug and/or heavily intoxicate his customers and sell them to ship captains, where they would wake and find themselves unwillingly in the middle of the ocean, or technically, 'Davy Jones' Locker'.
Some stories go on to say that Jones eventually became bankrupt, stealing a ship and becoming a pirate himself. He would sail around the Atlantic, keelhauling or decapitating other crews as well as locking them to their sinking ships.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any direct references to quote, but I have linked some articles below that discuss this theory.
Davy Jones: The Prophet
There are some rumours that Davy Jones, or at least the origins of his name, derives from Saint David, the patron Saint of Wales, as well as the figure of the prophet Jonah from the Bible, who was swallowed by a whale.
I think it better to include this in the words of W. Pinkerton, in the scholarly journal Notes & Queries in 1851:
During many years of seafaring life, I have frequently considered the origin of this phrase, and have now arrived at the conclusion that it is derived from the scriptural account of the prophet Jonah. The word 'locker', on board of ship, generally means the place where any particular thing is retained or kept, as "bread locker", "shot locker", "chain locker", &c. In the sublime ode in the second chapter of the Book of Jonah, we find that the prophet, praying for deliverance, described his situation in the following words:—"in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about; the depth closed me round about; the earth with her bars was about me." The sea, then, might not be misappropriately termed by a rude mariner, Jonah's locker—that is, the place where Jonah was kept or confined. Jonah's locker, in time, might be readily corrupted to Jones's locker; and Davy, as a very common Welsh accompaniment of the equally Welsh name, Jones, added, the true derivation of the phrase having been forgotten. [Pinkerton 509]
Davy Jones: The Devil
A very early (perhaps even the second after Defoe's writing in 1726) mention of Davy Jones' and his Locker is in 1751, in Chapter XIII of Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle. Here, Jones is described as a devilish sort of character, with a terrifying appearance that almost resembles the typical imagery of Satan:
“By the Lord! Jack, you may say what you wool; but I'll be damned if it was not Davy Jones himself. I know him by his saucer eyes, his three rows of teeth, his horns and tail, and the blue smoke that came out of his nostrils. What does the blackguard hell's baby want with me?[...]” This same Davy Jones, according to the mythology of sailors, is the fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep, and is often seen in various shapes, perching among the rigging on the eve of hurricanes, shipwrecks, and other disasters, to which a seafaring life is exposed; warning the devoted wretch of death and woe. No wonder then that Trunnion was disturbed by a supposed visit of this demon, which, in his opinion, foreboded some dreadful calamity. [Smollett 105]
This was then illustrated in 1832 by George Cruikshank, visualising all of the characteristics mentioned above.
Whilst this depiction is rather different to the one we get in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with horns rather than tentacles and blue smoke rather than the classic pipe, it's still interesting to see how Davy Jones was sometimes thought to be as horrifying as we see him now, simply based on his involvement with death at sea.
Overall, I hope that we get to find out more about the initial myths and legends that surround Davy Jones in real-world context, as I think that the information from word-of-mouth stories that we have so far are compelling already. I would love to read more older texts that reference him or his Locker, so that we might gain a better understanding of his place in seafaring history.
