The Ionian Islands or “French departments of Greece” between June 1797 and March 1799
Revue « Historia » n°925, janvier 2024
by cartesdhistoire
By the Treaty of Campoformio (October 17, 1797), France acquired the formerly Venetian islands of the Lonian Sea, strategic bases which will help France to participate in the sharing, which is believed to be imminent, of the spoils of the Ottoman Empire: north to south, Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zante, plus Cythera to the south of the Peloponnese, and the numerous islets that separate them. Added to this are the Venetian establishments on the coast of Epirus: Párga, Arta, Préveza and Bouthrote.
It was Bonaparte himself who, by a letter to the Directory of 25 Brumaire Year VI (November 15, 1797), provided for the organization of these new French departments of Greece, three in number: Corcyra (with the capital of city of Corfu), Ithaca (with Argostóli as its capital) and Aegean Sea (with Zante, its capital, Cythera – the medieval Cerigo – and the quasi-desert archipelago of Strophades).
The French established a foothold in Kefalonia on June 28 and in Corfu on the 29th. The jurist Pierre–Jacques Bonhomme de Comeyras was responsible for administering the three departments from Corfu, as commissioner of the Directory. Provisional municipalities, with local notables known to be Francophiles, were set up as well as a departmental direction called the “Central”, not to mention, in parallel, a military administration, trying above all to control the French troops so that they did not does not behave like an army of occupation.
But, as part of the War of the Second Coalition, an offensive by the Russian fleet, acting on behalf of the Ottomans, took place from October 12, 1798 (battle of Nicopolis and capture of Préveza). Then followed, in order, the captures of Cythera, Zante, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Lefkada until November 27. Besieged Corfu resisted from November 18, 1798 to March 3, 1799.
In March 1800, the archipelago became the Republic of the Seven Islands, under the nominal authority of the Porte but under that, in reality, of Russian forces.

Ok, here there are my headcanons on the Odyssey:) let's start from the beginning:
Arcesius (or Archesius) was Eurodia and Zeus' son. I think we don't actually know anything about these characters, but if I'm wrong, tell me. So. Eurodia was a wonderful girl when Zeus fell for her. It happened what it happens when Zeus is involved. And then Arcesius was born. Even if she was pretty rich, she lost everything because it's ancient greek, she had no husband but a son. So Arcesius grew up hating a lot of people. When he was old enough, he married a daughter of a rich important man- Calcomedusa. Taking advantage from his condition of demigod and his new economy position between nobles, he manipulated them pretty bad, and reunited a really divided country into the kingdom of Ithaca and the western Islands.
Eurodia was really sick when he became king. She died a bit after he built for her a palace in Zante. To keep the nobles at their place, he developed piracy in the kingdom. A little after, Laertes was born. He looked so little and sick that everyone thought he would had not survived too much. Instead, he did. Calcomedusa never looked after him, instead she closed herself in her rooms claiming that the house would have been cursed by a god.
Laertes grew up being tall and really skinny. When he was 17, he noticed how in the fields farmers were not working, ships were not sailing from the port. No ambassadors around. He got that the situation with piracy was going out of control. But, when he tried to do something, Arcesius got mad and send him with his mentor Damastor at Zante. Before going, his mother told him that everything was about to change. During this "exile" he learnt to shut up. To gloss over. When he came back Ithaca, he reunited the crowd against his own father and, one night, when Arcesius was drunk, he faced him. Arcesius was quite surprised because Laertes was not surely a brave person. But he left him the throne pacifically. And Calcomedusa disappeared a day without anyone understanding why.
let's talk about Laertes for a bit. He was a calm guy actually. Really honest and wise. But at the same time, he has a lot of nervous tic, as moving his foot.
decided to fix Ithaca's reputation, he went in Sparta and met Tyndareus and Adrastus. During a dinner with some kings, he met Autolycus too. I think I'm gonna talk about him in another post because it's 11 am and I'm hungry... Ok, so Autolycus saw this guy and decided that he was perfect for his daughter. He tooks Laertes to the mount Parnassus where he met Anticleia. She didn't actually want to marry him because she didn't want to get married. But then Laertes told her that he didn't wanted to married her without being happy because he didn't want to see her as sad as his mother had been. This thing hit Anticleia. Weirdly, Autolycus let Laertes being there for long. Till Anticleia actually approved to marry him. Sisiphus flirted with Anticleia a year before, but nothing really happened because she had a really not so nice personality. She put a knife in his hand and Sisiphus decided to go away as fast as he could. She took from his father, what else can I say?
After two year, Anticleia was pregnant and Laertes in war, she sent in exile Arcesius after he insulted her for being Autolycus' daughter. Laertes was quite angry, but, as always, he shut up.
When Odysseus was born, it was a stormy night. And in the moment Autolycus appeared and gave him his name, a lightning tore the sky. Gods did not like that name so much. I mean- who would? It was the first time Athena saw that little guy.
a year later, Jason was about to go on the Argo to find the golden fleece, when Laertes decided to do something in his life and, promising that he would search for political alliances during the travel, he convinced Anticleia to let him go. I could talk for hours of the Argonauts but I'm not gonna do it.
While Laertes was away, Odysseus started speaking pretty fast. When he was five, his mother finally let him go freely in all Ithaca. That's how he met a lot of his future crew member. With Eurybates, who he already knew, he made sure to have allies for his future kingdom. And friends. Like Sinon, Polites, Perimedes etc. Some of them were bad choices, Odysseus.
When finally Laertes came back, when he was six, (I actually do not know how long has been the Argonauts' spedition), he had basically no relationship with his son. And he was pretty a shy person, not the kinda who can fix this thing in half a minute. So their meeting were like:- how are you? - uhm, fine thank you. - good.
Ctimene was born a little after. She was a lot quieter than his brother when she was small.
When Odysseus was about to become ten, Laertes took him to an hunt. He left him away from the fight, but in the evenings they were camping, he taught him how to use a bow.
And then, he met his grandfather for the first time. I won't talk about the hunt bc I'm making a comic from it. And I'm getting you bored, I know.
The boar was Athena's. But not for finding heroes as in Epic. Autolycus dared to destroy one if his temple and she decided to punish him with a magic boar.
when she saw that a little ten year kid had been able to kill her boar, she went to kill him. But actually she was interested in him. A month after the hunt, Odysseus went home from the Focis and some week after he was able to walk again. Them Athena, under the face of a young girl, came to him. She was impressed by him, so she decided to look after him.
he knew that girl was weird. But when he found out she was Athena, their friendship doesn't change so much.
When he was twelve he met a man who claimed to be a diviner. Odysseus does not believe to him. After a talk in private, he discovered that the man was called Haliterses, and he was looking for his sister, who was disappeared in Ithaca. Thanks to the young prince, the man who killed her was punished. Odysseus first and Laertes then investigated on this case. Haliterses was so impressed on the young prince that he swear he would had helped him in any way. You know what it happens in the Odyssey.
hey now it's the time to talk about Ody!! I imagine him with this big blue eyes, deep as sea, always cold but at the same time so deep. Easy-going and really emotional sometimes, but only when he is not in public. His empathy is great, he's able to read other as noone can, that's why he is able to become someone other so easily.
Ok, that's enough for today. After I have basically no other headcanon. Maybe I'll say something about Autolycus after. Thank you for being able to arrive so far reading this post. And if something is from someone's headcanon I'm sorry I didn't know, I'll credit you if you tell me. And sorry for any grammatical errors.

The Faust component to Heat, which now makes it an allegory within an allegory, is just, like, a delight. A treasure trove. It illuminates just about every event and line of dialogue in a brand new way. In Goethe's Faust II the good doctor of course literally travels back in time with Mephistopheles; now Vincent Hanna does so metaphorically, into the creation of modern literary genres, into ancient Greek history and World War II. Take, for instance:
At 11:32 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 1995, the Far East National Bank at 444 South Flower Street in Los Angeles was held up by three men.
—Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, Heat 2
With the heat we got now you want to play World War Two in the streets with Van Zant?
—Neil McCauley, Heat
On 1 September 1939 the Germans attacked the Westerplatte peninsula in the port of Gdańsk. This assault marks the beginning of the Second World War. A small Polish garrison held out for seven days, bolstering the morale of the Polish people. After the war Westerplatte became a symbol of Polish resistance against the German invasion.

A Guide to Zante Town: Zakynthos Travel Guide for 2023
Zante Town is the capital and the commercial hub for the entire island of Zakynthos (aka Zante). While it’s a popular destination for visitors staying on the island of the same name, it’s not a beach destination, but instead, a bustling port city, so many people opt for the more sand and sea Mediterranean holiday on other coastal Zante towns like Laganas, Tsilivi and Psarou. However, there is…

Haaaa… Well, since @quasar-crew has tagged me, then I guess I’ll go for it.
Hyrule and Warriors: Haven’t even awoken as heroes to start their adventures yet. (I.e. I don’t have their games)
Four: Gets lost all the time. Could hardly find his way to Death Mountain and is currently stuck wandering the marshlands with Ezlo yelling at him all the time. Hasn’t even touched the Four Sword yet.
Twilight: A damn good fighter. Thought most of his bosses were too easy. Spent most of his time running around as a wolf and digging in the dirt. Practically has the Forest Temple memorized and revisits the Water Temple for funsies. LOVES swimming underwater, that Zora armor is the best thing that’s happened to him since he became a wolf. Midna is endearing, but he really wishes she would stop yawning. Secretly enjoyed the snow temple, despite how irritating it was. Is somewhat traumatized by Zant’s Hand and has yet to get past it. Actually cried a bit when Midna got hurt.
Time: Had a nice strong start to his adventure, but made the mistake of going to the Kakariko Well too early. Is forever traumatized by redeads and refuses to continue his path. Hasn’t even found the Master Sword yet.
Sky: Got distracted halfway through his journey flying around on Crimson and exploring isles and hunting down Goddess Cubes. Is utterly petrified at the thought of the Silent Trials, and has yet to actually complete the last one. Is an amazing fighter though, but really wishes that Zelda would STOP RUNNING AWAY. Really doesn’t like crows, and is honestly sick of sand. Is really fond of Fi, even when she starts talking about batteries. Also throws Remlits off the side of Skyloft for fun and nearly cried the first time he fought one at night and it ran off in fear. He tried to comfort it for a solid ten minutes before realizing it was hopeless.
Wind: Is a chaotic little shit. Throws pigs into the sea and snickers. Is really mad at the two fathers of the rescued kids for not realizing that HE saved their kids. (Yeah, Screw you too!!) Really dislikes how big the Great Sea is (thanks, gamecube) and almost cried when he saved all the Korok Trees just 3 seconds shy of 20 minutes. Really loved the Earth Temple, but found the Wind Temple annoying. Is mildly traumatized by Floormasters. Really hates being bombed all the time, and dislikes it when Boat King keeps talking instead of letting him on. Took him forever to realize the grappling hook was how he was supposed to fish up sunken treasure. Hates the search for the Triforce Charts.
Legend: Has only started his dream, but didn’t even make it to the first dungeon due to the annoyance of a strange blur on the edge of his vision. He awaits the continuation of his Journey via the gameboy port.
Wild: The only Link who has completed his journey (or nearly, he CAN beat Ganon, but he’s too busy exploring for that right now. Ganon can wait—it’s already been 100 years, what’s a few more?).He’s a master fighter, tackles both Lynels and Guardians for shits and giggles, and snipes moblins and bokoblins for fun. Enjoys utilizing his Flurry Rush ability and gliding aimlessly for long hours. Will often jump off hills to glide even just a little bit. ADORES the Champions’ Divine Beasts, though the dungeons themselves were somewhat frustrating. Rudania in particular was hell because it was too simplistic and he kept overthinking things. He wished he could chuck that one tilty Shrine (you know the one—) into Ganon’s gaping maw and watch it dissolve into Malice, but instead contents himself with the fact that he DID conquer it… eventually. Doesn’t really cook much, but brews a TON of elixirs. Loves riding horses (and bears. and gods. And deer) and must chase everything shiny. Mines when bored, and dislikes swimming. his Zora Armor is red like Mipha’s scales and while he has yet to track down the Champions’ Diaries, he knows they exist. Sometimes he gets magical chests that fall from the sky. He also apologizes every time Fi has to rest, and is terrified of using the Champions’ weapons because he doesn’t want to break them. Is REALLY FREAKING GOOD at punting Guardian lasers back at them, and is more scared of the Stalkers at night than anything else (but will still fight them. If he has Guardian weapons or Fi)
@bokettochild
@queenof-literature
Have fun with this!! 😂👏✨
New tag game inspired by @bllaaaaarrgh’s post: how competent is each link based on your competency in the game?
Warriors, Four, Legend, Wind: uhhh. nonexistant?
Time: All in all pretty competent! Is crying in the final dungeon but overall in tip-top competency!
Twilight: Not bad. Very clumsy. Has ptsd from the Goron mines and will start crying at the sight of lava. But overall can manage to stumble his way through to victory.
Sky: Is the greatest among his fellows, being the only one to have actually finished his adventure. Actually pretty good with his fighting moves, but suffers from injuries accrued from his constant face planting while failing to sky-dive.
Wild: Pretty average, but not the best when it comes to fighting. Will flee in terror from guardians and lynels alike. Has a habit of screaming in rage at the shrine indicator.
Hyrule: was in possession of incredible godlike powers of time travel, until he realized that such constant use of these powers was dangerous for the space time continuum and is now trapped in Death Mountain wandering in circles.

Sketch. But then again Sketch most likely had that fear beforehand, so now it’s just worse!
Just the final straw, really. That was about the point were he really stopped caring and put Zant in his metaphorical crosshairs.
In order: Red, Gen, Steam, and the poor unlucky sap getting Golden Freddy is Ocarina.
Hmm
Triforce gets tired, man
Well first of all I had to go and search ‘Hoist Up The Thing’ because I’ve never heard it before. After cackling to myself for a solid thirty seconds after the song ended, I can safely say that Wind is the increasingly exasperated, “That’s not port,” in every chorus of the song, and that by the end of it he’s just Done.
