Bernard Arcand, whose book Anthropology of Pornography is often cited in my series of posts defining porn and exposing its contractions (the series is here with its installments so far), recalled an interesting anecdote. In a legal proceeding on immorality, one of the people in charge said in a funny way to settle the question of definitions: I wouldn't know how to define what pornography is, but I could recognize it if I found it. This is more interesting than it seems. I add a quote from the Spanish writer Camilo José Cela, who when recalling in an interview his time working as a censor for General Franco's dictatorship revealed that his method of detecting what had to be cut from films was whether he had an erection while watching it or not.

En un proceso judicial sobre inmoralidad, uno de los responsables decía de forma divertida para zanjar la cuestión de definiciones: no sabría definir que es pornografía, pero podría reconocerla si la encuentro. Esto es más interesante de lo que parece. De mi cosecha añado cita del escritor español Camilo José Cela, que cuando recordaba en una entrevista sus tiempos trabajando como censor para la dictadura del general Franco revelaba que su método de detectar lo que había que cortar de las películas era si tenía presenciándolo una erección o no.
