Ik this is a stanne hater zone but i need to bitch and i think this is a safe space? certain elizabeth fans who act like she was morally progressive make me so uncomfortable like i get she's your special little blorbo! but they start sounding like hamilton fans idk this might be a me being black thing but i can't stand it

well, i’m white — so i’m not the best person to speak on this, but you’re absolutely right, anon! i really do think this fandom has an issue with acknowledging it’s own racism. i know a few poc (and black specifically) members of fandom who have voiced similar discomfort — and likewise i’ve heard similar from irish people. there was a bit of drama a few years back in fandom over whether or not elizabeth i should be held accountable for slaving voyages and early colonialism… (she should.)

#‘e1 stans sound like hamilton fans’ a fate worse than death i fear #it all goes back to the capitalistic neoliberal form of white feminism that this fandom is predicated on #i will continue to say this!#it goes back to what i’ve said in the past abt the popular tudor history fandom not being interested in history #so much as they are interested in a popular narrative of a white girlboss 🥴#within that is invariably colonialist ideas about history…#i saw a post once that said something like:#‘elizabeth’s legacy is worse than what henry viii’s or mary i’s’#that her contribution to the world was more damaging. i struggle to disagree with it.#i think increasing anti-intellectualism is also an element here ofc.#and that this is a consequence of how capitalistic and sensationalist the tudor period has become #history becomes commodified #people consume content — and those providing the content sell that limited narrative to a captive audience.#markets know to sell that white feminist elizabeth i narrative #popularly there’s no incentive for white women to meaningfully reflect #on more serious historical details that might contradict this idea of a white feminist elizabeth i #and no accessible resources to facilitate that reflection #tudor fandom #this is always a safe space for hatery #i love being the fandom hag #chitchat
