imagine— Theo has bought back all the fake furniture & the painting is back in the museum. he’s even broken up with Kitsey! things are somehow still cool between him & Mrs. Barbour. & he & Hobie are closer than ever. things are still kinda weird with Pippa, but so it goes. oh & Popchyk is doing alright! though he never got totally used to the hustle & bustle of New York, & he forever misses his other dad.

whenever Boris facetimes Theo (Boris insists, so he can see his baby!), Popchyk freaks out with joy just to hear his voice! Theo rolls his eyes, but it’s nice to see the little old dog so animated.

“He misses his Papa!” Boris whines. “Too much food & no play with you! He is fat &—“

“Come here then. Visit him & prove what a great dad you are, you deadbeat.”

“Am not deadbeat!” Boris cries. “Am very much alive &—“

Theo hangs up.

Boris texts: ?????!!!! 🐶💔😭TELL POPCHYK THAT WAS YOU!! HIS PAPA LOVES HIM!!!!!! TELL HIM I COME SOON.

& much to Theo’s surprise, he does.

sooo then Boris convinces Theo to get a place with him in upstate NY “for Popchyk” because it will be quieter & nicer there for him, & doesn’t he deserve that at the end of his life?

Theo ends up agreeing to all Boris’ plans, supposedly all for Popchyk’s benefit, but alsooo how could he resist basically being Boris’ husband & moving to a beautiful house in a quiet, quaint neighborhood? it’s everything he can’t admit he wants, but he can have now, thanks to Popchyk!

the best scene in the goldfinch isn't which was of course i love you or boris and theo's reunion but actually boris and popchik's reunion

Idk if I'm just shouting into the void, but I can't get over the Goldfinch. And I can't get over the parallels between Boris's behavior when he gets attacked by his father vs. as an adult in Amsterdam.

In Vegas, he says afterward

"I provoked him on purpose...so you could get Popchik out of there."

And in Amsterdam, Theo describes Boris throws him a look that means

run for it, Potter, go.

Theo even narrates later

I realized, cold with horror, what Boris had known was going to happen from the moment he saw them: why he'd wanted me to run for it, or at least to try.

In both instances, Boris chooses to protect Theo (he says it's for Popchik, but I think he's covering his true intent) at his own expense. Boris even antagonizes their attackers in Amsterdam, burning them with his cigarette. It's a complete mirror of what he does in Vegas. The only thing that saves him in Amsterdam is that Theo is different. Rather than run, he stays to save Boris.

And afterward, in Vegas and Amsterdam, Theo repeatedly voices concern for Boris's injuries, but both times, he says the same thing.

"is nothing"

Boris's character is shown through his actions much more than his words. Both times, though he denies being hurt, he very obviously is. Both times, he downplays the sacrifice he was prepared to make for Theo. It feels like his own version of avoiding saying I love you by trying to make it obvious with actions instead.

i was with my parents in their car and i saw this man with a cute tiny fluffy dog, the dog was cute so i kept looking.

seconds later my mom just looked at me and said

Just finished Goldfinch and damn the last 60 min is A Whole Lot to think about!

Thoughts???? You should check out the movie too. There are some changes I prefer (tho mostly I stick to book canon)

Remember how we talked about Theo's nickname "puppy" and how he's popchik. That goddamn letter he wrote to Hobie... 😭😭😭 fuckin broke me.

I also think part of the reason this book haunts me so much is how unsatisfying the ending is. Like I think it makes sense. It wouldnt make sense for Theo to suddenly be sober and accepting who he is but idk...makes me sad to think about.

God I wanna re-read it now...it has been about a year since I first read it.

I’ve always been curious cuz I’ve seen it written both ways, but do you write “Popchyk” (which I’ve been seeing a lot more) or “Popchik”? Or just. Popper.
