i’m going to make fiddauthor art with fidds wearing his wedding ring and you are NOT going to like it
big obligatory banner that says “cheating is bad don’t do it i just like stories with relationship drama”
closeted, internally homophobic gay men who are married with kids has to be the trope i’m weakest to. no person involved is escaping the despair brought on by a relationship built on a well intentioned, desperate lie, born out of a desire to be normal and good
he WANTED to love her so fucking badly. he felt no ill will towards her and he loves their son more than words can say. he thought the attraction, the way she felt about him, would come with time. it didn’t. he doesn’t want to hurt her yet was doomed to from the start, and he’s truly, truly sorry. this does not absolve him of anything whatsoever and she has the full right to never want to speak with him again. he lied! he pretended to feel the same when he never once felt anything but platonic affection! he’s been in love with someone else this whole fucking time! and their kid… he’s caught in the middle of it all, too young to understand why his father would hurt his family like this.
and then he disappears and never comes back. imagine you’re 5 and your dad goes to the middle of the woods with his buddy for science shit, all of the sudden your parents are yelling on the phone and signing papers, and then he goes MIA. for years.
imagine your husbands “buddy” was the one he was thinking of all this time, not you, never you. and the first chance he gets to run away from you, he takes, and you should have been suspicious by the rushed frenzy of it all, the phone calls getting shorter and shorter until it fizzles to nothing. he forgot to get you a christmas gift. he hand-made him two. there has to be something wrong with you, it has to be your fault. you wish you married the man he becomes when he’s in his presence.
he folded when you started questioning him directly - he’d been to neurotic to ever be a good liar. you thought he was the one. he thought you were nice.
by the time the divorce is finalized he’s different in a wrong way. confused, angry, forgetful, insane - if the giant homicidal robot pterodactyl you’ve been harassed by is any indication. (he’s had a bad habit of building homicidal robots when he’s mad since they met -engineer things- but it was never directed at her - thankfully it never actually does anything) he’s clearly abusing drugs - you’d feel bad if he hadn’t abandoned you with the burden of explaining why your son can’t see his father anymore.
it’s a rotten bit of your soul, but time heals you. you move on and no longer think of him. trust in your career. find a man who truly loves you with no motives attached. raise your kid to be a good man. and in a fashion not unlike shakespearean dramatic irony, this makes him move to gravity falls to find and take care of his father. you couldn’t care less what hee doing now, but damn it, it’s his father, what is the kid supposed to do? but its futile- he appears to have no remorse, hell, no memory of the incident in the first place. (this isn’t his fault but how are they supposed to know that?) so he grows bitter and cold just like his mother used to be.
imagine that.
all over a mans inability to do anything but live in denial. to force himself to live in a box and pine like a dying man over the right one at the wrong time, destined to crash and burn. to take denial to a new level- a cult, brain damaging radiation, a total ego death - just to take the edge off. take off that damn wedding ring

*scrolling through tumblr and sees immaculate, mouth-watering art*
"Wow!"
*it's of a toxic couple back when they were together/them being bitter exes in present time*
"Oh, these two aren't healthy in any way, shape, or form"
...
*likes it anyway*

We need more Fiddauthor angst that is about their issues, because I keep seeing Fiddauthor angst that's Bill tormenting poor Mcgucket using Ford's body and I don't hate that, I eat it up everytime as long as it's Fiddleauthor (and by extent Fiddleford) contact I'll take everything.
But I think the issues and flaws between their relationship that is actually caused by them should be acknowledged more. Fidds got his anxiety issues but he just wanted to be a good friend/partner to Ford, despite his (rightful) concerns and doubts. So instead of talking to Ford about how he was really feeling he chosed that erasing his memories would be better without realising the brain damage he was causing to himself. And Fords flaw is that he was too prideful. He chosed his own research and eagerness to feel special over Fidds warnings and even insulted him. And then they never talked to eachother again. Can you imagine how much that probably hurt for Fidds? He gave up so much for Ford. His family, his wife, his memories, his sanity. Only to be insulted by him the moment he decided to quit their project because he saw the destruction it would cause to their world. Ouch. And Ford? Ford was too blinded by Bill to see that Fiddleford had actually given him everything he wanted. He wanted for people to not see him as a freak because of his six fingers, he wanted respect from others. And Fiddleford had given him just that: respect and kindness. Fidds didn't saw him as a freak like everyone else (besides Stan but this is about fiddauthor). He was just happy and excited to have a friend. But Ford didn't realise that, because Bill had made him feel special, more than anyone else ever did. He influenced him to believe he was better/smarter than everyone else. He let his pride get the better of him and ruin their relationship.
I need to see more angst of that. More angst of them actually communicating with eachother. Talk about their issues, and heal together.

Book of Bill spoilers part 2 (edited)
Something I haven't seen anyone mention yet: Bill's entire backstory in the 2D dimension is directly inspired by *Edwin Abbott Abbott's Flatland* (almost word for word up until Bill destroys the entire dimension). It made me giggle when I realized, because the outfit Carl Sagan wears in his explanation of Flatland on "Cosmos" is the same outfit that inspired Ford's design.
Tumblr media
Abbott's Flatland was also referenced in Journal 3, when Ford visited a similar 2D dimension to Bill's. He appeared in their world as an irregular shape, which is taboo. (In Carl's explanation, Ford = the three dimensional apple that creates a strange stamp on Flatworld and drives people mad)
I think this appears multiple times to provide
1. An explanation for WHY Bill became crazy. It's specified in Flatland that 2D shapes fully understanding the third dimension is near impossible, the same way we can't fully understand a 4D object unless it manifests into a 3D object (a tesseract's shadow = cube)
2. A parallel to Fiddleford's experience with Bill in the portal. We could use the Flatland explanation to describe what happens to a human when they see a fourth dimensional creature. (Bill is a fourth dimensional creature and the forms we witness in the series are his "apple stamp" or shadow in the third dimension.) Poor Fidds saw something impossible to comprehend
idk how large the intersection between Gravity Falls fans and Carl Sagan fans is, so i figured it wouldn't hurt to post this. I <3 Carl
Edit: Corrected some mistakes with crediting and wording

THE LAST OF US X GRAVITY FALLS AU
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, I saw the whole hospital clip of the HBO show. Then I watched the entire walkthrough of the game. Then I watched it multiple times. Safe to say I became obsessed with this game as well as with Joel and Ellie's father-daughter bond. So of course I had to make a Gravity Falls au. I'm currently planning to draw all characters for this au but kinda stuck with classes rn so that may take a while.
Anyway here are the list of gf characters that would act as tlou people:
Wendy Corduroy as Marlene (it was originally supposed to be pacifica's mom Priscilla but she didn't fit the role so ye)
Sheriff Daryl Blubs as Bill (oop)
Deputy Edwin Durland as Frank( yes I will make these gay officers tragic in this au)
Fiddleford Mcgucket as Henry Burrell (sorry fidds)
Tate Mcgucket as Sam Burrell (poor kid sorry you become a zombie)
Soos Ramirez as Sarah Miller (yep its cruel but hey Stan needs his tragic backstory)
Dipper Pines as Riley Abel (More sibling relationship with Mabel rather than romantic because pin*cest will never happen in this blog no never)
Cathy Crenshaw as Maria Miller(Tommy's wife)
Bill Cipher as David and Kryptos as James

Quarterfinals, Match 3
Tumblr media
Stanford Pines and Fiddleford McGucket (Fiddauthor) from Gravity Falls vs. Moomintroll and Snufkin (Snufmin) from Moominvalley!
Propaganda for Fiddauthor:
very very close guys who do mad science together and also lived together for a little while
1. College roomies. 2. Ford called Fiddleford later on, asked him to cone to Gravity Falls, and they temporarily moved in together (on account of Fidds having a wife and child back in Palo Alto or something).
They Were Roommates. And DnD nerds, unhinged scientists (one of them made a deal with a demon and put a metal plate in their skull to prevent possession from said demon, the other builds homicidal robots and made a memory-erasing cult.), Best Friends, etc. Ford also wrote things like how they talked about their futures while star gazing, "my poor. beleaguered assistant".... stuff like that. TL;DR: roommates, played DnD one-on-one, and Ford talked about Fiddleford a LOT in his journal.
Propaganda for Snufmin:
BASICALLY. The author of the original books was a queer woman and Moomintroll kinda was her self insert. At some point she had a relationship with a man who was always traveling so they had to break up. So she made Snufkin's character, who was inspired by this man, and Snufkin and Moomintroll's relationship was inspired by both of them. But at this point of time you couldn't make queer rep in a book, so it was never canon, only ambiguous. However, the creators of the most recent cartoon, Moominvalley, are clearly aware of this backstory and made them even more ambiguous. Kind of "ambiguous best friends"... And ambiguous best friends is like, the perfect trope for queerplatonic headcanons.

Hyperfixation thoughts:
“Grammar, Stanley.” Was absolutely Ford being a petty bitch at the end of the world.
BUT we also know a poor Jewish boy from New Jersey with a deformity and (presumably) autism and npd PROBABLY had to mask A LOT to fit into academia. Shed a lot of the quirks that marked him as an outsider. Which is why I feel he got along with Fidds and why he and Fidds were wearing suits in the middle of the fucking sticks where they didn’t talk to anyone. It’s Ford’s lab and he wants to be formal and accepted by the elites.
Would post-series Ford pick up some of the quirks he casted aside? Like, does this dude use a bunch of Yiddish now that he’s back with his family? Does the Jersey accent come back? Is he proud of being from the slums now? Does he realize he really DID make it out all those years ago? We know he realizes none of it was worth it without his family based on the BOB site….. what does that look like now?
Does Ford appreciate how informal grammar works? Or how language is a living, breathing reflection of the people who use it??
Do they ever go back to New Jersey? You can never go back to your hometown, so what’s it like now? Do they even recognize it? Do they fit in anymore? Do they have distant family there still???
I need someone better at writing than me to write me something.
