My roman empire: 20th Century Girl
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ / 5
This movie is my literal roman empire . I went through three different emotions throughout the movie: happiness, hatred, depression. (The only reason I'm giving it a 4 stars out of 5 is because of the ending.) Like the beginning is fine. It's so cute and wholesome, just teenage love with the most handsome guy that's 190 cm tall ! Like man if my highschool had someone like Poong Woon-ho, I would flip. Flip and fold . Like until then, it's fine. And then Bora's friend, Yeondu comes back from America and that's where all hell breaks loose. Oh and also, just additional info that u prob didn't know, Bora is purple in Korean and Yeondu is like yellowish green. I thought that was cute as both their names were colors. Anywayss yea so all hell breaks loose after the friend returns because what in the plot twist was that . And tbh if I was Bora, I would not have given up my man just for her happiness. Like Bora is an AMAZING friend if u think about it because she distanced herself from the only boy she liked like GIRL WHAT R U DOING. That gave me a stroke I literally fainted. I'm sorry but I genuinely hated the bsf, yeondu bc she forced bora and woon-ho apart like NOO girl NO. Ok and then comes the most depressing part that made me give a 4 stars out of 5. The freaking train station. The damn train station that appears again in Lovely Runner. ANYWAYS I can't believe that the directors made that the last scene for them to ever meet cus like wdym he's gone now. WDYM. I refuse to believe that the ending actually happened so like yk let's just say they got married and had kids and grew old together !! Also a bit off topic but the filter / vibe in the movie is like blurry / vision-y which makes it SO pretty. Can we all agree that the mountain scene where the two were filming their surroundings and the ocean scene was SO PRETTY ?!? Ok but anyways I really loved the movie and you will too so go watch it now on netflix 🫵

20th Century Girl
Do you think I have forgotten...about you?
"20th Century Girl" is a nostalgic movie set in a time when the internet was just emerging, and pagers were still in use. The story revolves around Na Bo-Ra, her best friend Kim Yeon Doo, and Yeon Doo's crush, Baek Hyun Jin. Despite Yeon Doo having to leave the country for heart surgery right after meeting her crush, Bo Ra steps in to learn everything about Hyun Jin, maintaining their connection. Bo Ra becomes close to Hyun Jin's friend, Poong Woon Ho, leading to a complex web of friendship and love. The plot takes a twist when Yeon Doo returns from surgery and meets Woon Ho, who turns out to be her crush, initially mistaken by Bo-Ra. This sets the stage for a journey of self-discovery and the complexities of friendship and love.
It was disheartening witnessing their conflict over a guy when they were both willing to let him go for the sake of their friendship. It gave me emotional distress. I mean, young love doesn't need to be so tangled, especially when it begins with joy and ease.
The movie's conclusion caught me off guard. Despite numerous obstacles in the 20th century, such as Woon-ho leaving for New Zealand and their failed reconciliation, I hoped the 21st century would bring them together, especially with his pledge to return for university. However, he gradually stopped contacting her, leaving me waiting for his surprise return. But as more years passed without word, I pondered his sudden disappearance. Jumping to 2019, two decades since they met, I felt he had kept her waiting too long for a heartfelt reunion. Surprisingly, there was no reunion—the movie revealed his passing without details. This conclusion made me realize that not every story needs a "happy ending," and that events unfold as they're meant to. Despite the lack of explanation, I found the unresolved ending beautifully poignant.
The movie deeply resonated with me as it mirrored a stage I've experienced—young love and the sacrifices it entails for everyone's well-being. Each scene felt like a heartbreak in the most poignant way, evoking memories of my own youthful romance. It prompted reflection on the amusing and awkward moments from that time and raised the question: does recalling those memories bring joy or heartache?
I encouraged my mom to watch the movie to gather her thoughts on it. She expressed profound affection, saying it struck a chord within her, something she'll treasure deeply. Her reaction prompted me to realize that she connected with the movie because it echoed her own high school love story, evoking memories of friendship, young love, and the sacrifices made for others' happiness, despite ending in personal heartbreak.
As we grow older, there are moments of looking back at youth with nostalgia, recalling innocent times filled with self-discovery. This sentiment resonates deeply with me, as I, too, have experienced and cherished similar reflections from the past.
I'd suggest this movie to everyone. It's a beautiful movie, a simple yet unexpectedly rich story. I decided to watch it on a whim, needing something just to watch out of boredom not knowing 20th Century Girl would take a part of my heart.

"20th Century Girl"
Directed by: Bang Woo-ri
Tumblr media
This movie was released on Netflix last October 21, 2022. The movie was all about a teen girl named Na Bo-ra which is casted by Kim Yoo-jung who helped her lovesick bestfriend named Kim Yeon-du which is casted by Roh Yoon-su. Na Bo-ra was taking down notes for Kim Yeon-du who flew to States for her heart transplant about the man named Baek Hyun-jin. Na Bo-ra was able to befriend Baek Hyun-jin and its bestfriend named Poong Woon-ho. Na Bo-ra fell in love with Poong Woon-ho, everything went smoothly and fine but not until Kim Yeon-du finally came back to Korea after her heart transplant. Na Bo-ra faced a hard decision whether what to choose, friendship or love when she found out that Kim Yeon-du thought that Baek Hyun-jin was Poong Woon-ho, the man whom Na Bo-ra fell in love with.
The movie at the beginning part was giving a "happy ending" vibe that tackled about a childhood love with a mix of comedy but little did we know, it has a surprising yet tragic plot twist. As a viewer, I never expected that the movie would end like that- Na Bo-ra and Poong Woo -ho didn't get the chance to continue the love story they once had after Poong Woon-ho went to New Zealand where his younger brother, Joseph, was. The characters were very effective in delivering their dialogues and as a viewer, I felt their emotions that it seemed like the movie was never an act or scripted at all. As I got curious about the origin of the movie, I once read that according to the director of the movie, 20th Century Girl is not based on true story but the part where Na Bo-ra took down notes for her bestfriend about its crush was all true.
Among the 2022 Korean movies I've watched, 20th century girl is one of the best movies I'll recommend as a "must watch" movie because of how great the casts played their own roles, how the storyline has unpredictable and surprising plot and the overall quality of the movie.
