The Terror at Pontchartrain Beach

Summary: It's Halloween Weekend, 1955, and two seniors from New Orleans, Hortense and Joan, are dressed up in their costumes and heading to Ponchartrain Beach Amusement Park to for a night of fun. Turns out up and coming performer Elvis Presley is going to be on the main stage tonight, and he is making quite a splash with the locals.

~ A Lake Pontchartrain's beach somewhere in Lakeview

The night had been long―too long for his body. He’d spent the last 48 hours working without taking much of a break. He knows it’s bad for his health, but sometimes, he needs to stop thinking about what he lost and focus on what he has and work is the only way for him to do so. He knows Lake Pontchartrain is unofficially Lotus Eaters territory, but his presence has never bothered anyone. He’s just more careful, but it doesn’t stop him. The only territories he avoids belong to the Deathrunners and the Nameless.

He shakes his head to clear his mind before he removes his shoes and socks; rolling up his pants under his knees. Then he removes his blazer, revealing short sleeves buttoned up shirt that expose his tattooed arms―they go from his shoulders to about half of his forearms on both side. He puts his tailored jacket over his arm and holds his shoes carefully as he moves to that the water hits his ankles as he walks. What he doesn’t realize is that his fountain pen drops on the sand soundlessly.

Chapter 2: The Last Virgin in New Orleans

Summary:

Hortense has had a hard night, and now Joan and her new friend Elvis make it harder. So she decides to get away from them, the police, her family, and find anything she can to distract herself from the horrors of the night and her memory finding the body of Martha Gayle, stabbed to death, in one of the back alleys of Pontchartrain Beach.

The trouble is, this Elvis guy won't leave her alone.

If you had asked me some years if I remember Lincoln Beach, I would have said yes and told a story so convincing that I believe it myself. My family celebrated just about anything at the lakefront when I was younger, and it was during those times, I heard the stories of…

Lincoln Beach, New Orleans, LA was located along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain near Little Woods, a portion of land that was little developed in the 1930s. The land where Lincoln Beach was located was deeded to the city by Sam Zemurray in 1938 and purchased within a year by the Orleans Levee Board. The Levee Board first designated this section as a swimming area in the lake for "colored" New Orleanians, then built out additional land in the lake for the amusement park to be built on. The park was similar to the then "whites only" Pontchartrain Beach amusement park, only on a smaller scale. It featured various rides, games, restaurants, a swimming pool in addition to lake swimming, and frequent live music performances.

Leto doesn’t understand why everything feels so light and alright. Like all the fears he has about meeting new people, about being attracted to someone else are just gone. Just one night―he can risk it all for just one night. But sex won’t cut it when he wants to learn everyone about the younger stranger. A stranger that feels anything but it. It feels like an eternity, but it’s been less than 10 minutes. “Of course you would.” A creature like Levi can’t be bound to one place he can imagine. But just tonight, Leto hopes he’ll manage to keep him in his nets. “I like to be taken more than taking.” He says and it’s so cheesy that he blush shamefully, before laughing. “I’m so sorry.” But the smile is full of life, lighting up the already beautiful night.

But the Underboss doesn’t give the vampire any time to rethink his offer―he takes his hand, moving ahead and forcing Levi to turn around to follow as he starts to run. It’s been so long since he’s just ran for the pleasure of it. So long since he last felt carefree. So long since he just felt like a kid. At a time when he had both of his parents and his godfather―when life was just filled with joyous moments. And with that feeling in his heart, Leto’s subconscious makes him run toward a place that he has always loved; the Lake Pontchartrain’s beach in Lakeview.

The sky is clear and the moon bright―lucky for him, it’s not a full moon. He finally stops running as they reach the sand, not many people around at the time. He turns around, catching his breath quickly as he smiles at Levi again. This time, it’s his turn to look up. “It’s really beautiful.” He has yet to let go of Levi’s hand. “This is probably my favourite spot in New Orleans. I used to come here a lot as a kid with my parents, until my father was killed. After that, my godfather took care of me and brought me here often too. And he became my father and this remained a special place.” He doesn’t know what he’s telling all of that to someone he’d just met, but it’s like he knows it’s alright to tell things like that to Levi. “There!” He points with his free hand and starts to jog―pulling the vampire with him―toward a small pier that has seen better days. “I used to collar seashells here.” He looks down as they stand under the pier and spots one, picks it up and offers it to the vampire. “For you.” He’s acting like an over-excited teenager. “I’m sorry, I barely gave you space to talk. Please―tell me more about you Levi.” It shows in his gaze that his question is genuine and that he wants to listen to anything and everything the vampire will be willing to share with him.

Levi was growing weaker by the second, he would do whatever it took to keep the other around him as long as possible. It was refreshing that he didn’t have to pretend, it seemed that Leto was enjoying his company just the way he was. He didn’t know it then, but tonight was simply the beginning of forever between the two. What he also didn’t know was the risk Leto was taking in being with him right now, and perhaps that was a good thing. Had he known, he would’ve begged the other to reconsider taking a chance on him tonight. Levi didn’t think he was worth any risks, though the vampire would have happily taken a risk of his own if it meant spending more time with Leto. Maybe it didn’t matter in the end who knew what, because when two people are meant to cross paths, the universe had a funny way of working itself out sometimes.

Like how the person he was currently holding the hands of would one day become his entire world. His reason for existing, for wanting to continue immortality. His was holding the hands of his soulmate, his best friends, his over half, the person that would finally give him the feeling of being whole. The one who would fill the void he felt, to be his light in the darkness, and to fill that emptiness with happiness. He didn’t know that from the moment their gazes locked it was the beginning of their souls intertwining. One day this man was going to know him better than he had ever known himself in over 135 years, and he was going to love every ounce of him. The good, the ugly, the tame, and the chaotic. He didn’t know just then that now there would be no life without Leto, there would never be an existence, a moment in time, in which Leviathan’s world could exist without the other being in in some form or another. And while that would be his greatest strength, it would become someone else’s greatest weapon against him. But…that was for another time, and place.

Levi smiles, “I am new in town right now, but I’ve been here before. Years back. I come and go as I please.” With pretty much every aspect of his life, lovers especially. However, right now, right now Levi didn’t want to leave. He wanted to stay, to learn more about this person, if that’s what the other would allow. And just as he was thinking about it, Leto asked the question. He nods, brushing his tongue against his bottom lip as a crooked smile appeared on his lips, “I am yours to take, Leto. So, take me.”
