Moth selfie accidentally becomes "Land of the Giants" promo. Or, maybe, I outgrew and captured Mothra? This photo is at least a week old. But, I'm back in the shop tonight.

We've had quite a wild day so far at @smithlibrary! This morning, this beautiful and very wiggly garden snake had to be extracted from our tech services office. And this afternoon, we wound up rescuing this giant caterpillar from the book drop drive-thru! (We think he is going to be a polyphemus moth one day 🐛) Anyway, animal rescue is not something that they teach you in library school, but we're happy to help regardless.

I just found another rare butterfly laying on the grass. It is clearly a female because her antennas are not as bushy as the one from the male.

These females can emit pheromones in the air detected by the male nearly at 10km just so they can mate; which is an extraordinary gift from nature.

This little morning discovery still makes me sad because I know these kind of moths have vestigial mouths and because of it, they cannot eat, and live only for a week. And I'm pretty sure with all this smog floating in the Grande Vallée from wildfires, no male has been able to receive messages from this beautiful female to mate before the end of her life.

These wildfires most stop at once!

Beautiful Extremely Rare Nocturnal Endangered Luna Moth. Also called the American Moon Moth. Apparently If you have seen one of these live Luna Moths, you should consider yourself very lucky.

They are the largest of Moths in North America with a wingspan of 4.5 inches and can exceed 7.

This morning we woke up to an amazing surprise! 6 months ago, late last August, I found a caterpillar on our walk home from school. Luca and Ezra were enamored immediately. Luca naked him Calapillary. When we got him home that night, Calapillary made himself a cocoon. Luca was very excited by the idea that we would get to see him hatch into a moth. I looked him up, and discovered that Calapillary was a Polyphemus moth and that he was supposed to become a moth much earlier in the summer. We weren’t sure if he would hatch, but we waited and waited and nothing happened. After about a month we’d given up hope and so this cocoon just became part of the decor of Luca and Ezra’s bedroom. . This morning, Eva and I were talking in the kitchen when suddenly she let out a yelp of excitement. At first I thought maybe Ezra had gotten into something dangerous. She just pointed into their bedroom, speechless. That’s when I noticed there was an unfamiliar shape in the bug container. It was Calapillary! He had finally hatched into a moth! I have no idea what made him hatch now. It’s still very cold outside, but I guess the conditions were just right in their bedroom. Maybe the white noise machine making cricket sounds all last night helped? Who knows? Either way the kids were very excited to meet the new Calapillary, who Luca has renamed Mothy. He doesn’t have any moth-parts, so he’ll only live about a week. Since it’s still so cold outside, I guess he’ll be spending that week in the butterfly tent. I still can’t believe he was actually still alive in that cocoon all those months. Yesterday I had this mysterious beautiful studio visitor that spent all day here on my sign, nestled up the the bird magnet made by @barnfunk. I think he is a male polyphemus moth (giant silk moth)... but please chime in if you know! He had a wingspan of 6 inches! I was hoping he might stay a few days but this morning he was gone. Look what I found next to my door. So #beautiful and #fragile. Wow! The name of this moth is #PolyphemusMoth or #AntheraeaPolyphemus / #CramerMoth.
