In a like manner it might be fancied that a bird originally a buzzard, had been induced here to undertake the office of the carrion-feeding Polybori of the American continent.

In chapter 3.1.1 of Les Mis, the Christmas fair in Montfermeil has, among other highlights, "one of those horrible Brazilian vultures, a specimen of which our Royal Museum only obtained in 1845 and whose eye is a tricolored cockade. Naturalists call this bird, I believe, Caracara Polyborus; it belongs to the order of the Apicidae and the family of the vultures."
As best as I can tell, this is the crested caracara (Caracara plancus, previously placed in the genus Polyborus). It's native to not only Brazil, but the entirety of South America and most of Central America as well.
And although the colors are out of order, it does indeed have a tricolor!
#les miserables#les mis letters#given what hugo thinks about octopuses#i'm not surprised he got some of the details wrong#it's more closely related to falcons than vultures#though i also don't know what the 1860s taxonomy would've been#tiny modern day dinosaurs

Shearwater — The Great Awakening (Polyborus)
The Great Awakening (2022) by Shearwater
Although it’s been six years since Shearwater’s last album, Jet Plane and Oxbow, Jonathan Meiburg has been busy in the interim. He formed an excellent new band called Loma with Emily Cross (Cross Record) and Dan Duszynski (Any Kind), who released their self-titled debut in 2018, and Don’t Shy Away in 2020. Meiburg also published a non-fiction book entitled A Most Remarkable Creature in 2021, which details his ornithological quest to study a unique bird of prey called the caracara. On the new Shearwater album, The Great Awakening, their ninth by my count, Meiburg brings all of these recent experiences to bear. It’s a lengthy, reflective and beautiful record that mostly steers away from the more rock-oriented sound of Shearwater’s last two releases.
Right from introductory salvo “Highgate,” it’s lovely to hear Meiburg’s voice again, close-miked and gentle, but with a touch of the sardonic in the album’s opening lines: “Here comes your heart attack / Starless and bible black / And here is the endgame.” What might have come across as hopeless instead promises a blank slate, a new beginning; perhaps the great awakening of the album’s title. An almighty peal of distorted guitar splits the song asunder, like thunder on a dark night, and Meiburg’s voice rises in ferocious defiance against the elements. It’s quite the opener.
The lurching, low-slung bass of “No Reason” and “Laguna Seca” draws a throughline from Loma’s “Black Willow,” drummer Josh Halpern hanging behind the beat to create a feeling of the songs dragging their heavy limbs through a swamp. Field recordings from Meiburg’s travels are woven into the stunning piano-based “Aqaba,” and the ghostly, minimal “Milkweed,” which climaxes with the kind of panic-inducing orchestral rush found on The Beatles’ classic “A Day in the Life.”
Co-producer Duszynski brings his formidable drumming prowess to “Empty Orchestra,” which injects a welcome burst of energy at the album’s mid-point. The song succeeds in being anthemic without succumbing to the bombast that dogged Jet Plane and Oxbow cuts like “Pale Kings.” The ride cymbal pattern that kicks off the lengthy “There Goes the Sun” brings to mind Talk Talk’s “After the Flood,” but the track proves to be one of the few moments on this nearly hour-long record where the music outstays its welcome.
The influence of seminal Talk Talk albums Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock is writ large throughout, especially on the gorgeous “Xenarthran,” in which disparate wisps of instrumental texture are delicately woven into an airy musical fabric. Meiburg’s patient, contemplative and painterly exploration of space and repetition, and the subtle, haunting arrangements are undoubtedly indebted to Mark Hollis — and prove shiveringly effective.

The northern crested caracara (Caracara cheriway), also called the northern caracara and crested caracara,[3] is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It was formerly considered conspecific with the southern caracara (C. plancus) and the extinct Guadalupe caracara (C. lutosa) as the "crested caracara". It has also been known as Audubon's caracara. As with its relatives, the northern caracara was formerly placed in the genus Polyborus. Unlike the Falco falcons in the same family, the caracaras are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are rather sluggish and often scavengers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_crested_caracara The southern crested caracara (Caracara plancus), also known as the southern caracara or carancho, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. As presently defined, the southern crested caracara is restricted to central and southern South America. It formerly included the northern crested caracara (C. cheriway) of the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and northern South America, and the extinct Guadalupe caracara (C. lutosa) as subspecies. As its relatives, it was formerly placed in the genus Polyborus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_crested_caracara

At times the Carrancha is noisy, but is not generally so: its cry is loud, very harsh and peculiar, and may be likened to the sound of the Spanish gutteral g, followed by a rough double r r; when uttering this cry it elevates its head higher and higher, till at last, with its beak wide open, the crown almost touches the lower part of the back.
