In honor of English being Jean's third language here are some words I learned from reading TSC!
scrimmage - on-court fight for the ball or a practice game
hazing - like bullying (may be by older students to 'welcome' a new one?)
sprained LCL
floozy - like Jeremy said, there's no good explanation... but the way I laughed when google said it's lafirynda XDDD
scoop neckline - like a v-neck but hotter
contrition 🫠
#also funfact Lisiński is a polish surname that means Fox plus a surname ending#the foxes never left the series lol#all for the game#the sunshine court#tsc#aftg#jean moreau

It's very bizarre that they have the whole scene of Emma (little Victorian ghost girl) asking for the boys' help, and Edwin negotiating with her, just to never mention her again!
I get that it was partly just to establish how they normally do business at their agency, before it all gets disrupted. But she's also the only reason any of us meet Crystal at all, and that anything in the show happens!
Emma is established to be manipulative and tight-fisted, but she's still willing to shell out...something to have them help Crystal, which would indicate that she cares about her. But we never see the two of them reunited, even though I'd imagine the boys wouldn't be able to collect payment until after they've solved her case.
Not to mention!!! Emma KNOWS Crystal! (Even if only a little!) When Crystal's memory is erased, and she's despairing not knowing anything about herself, why doesn't she, OR one of the boys, seek Emma out to ask her about Crystal's background?
AND none of Crystal's reclaimed memories contain any trace of Emma! Given that they both seemed to be "mean girls", they could've gotten up to some fun hijinks together! Did the writers just forget about her?
idk... I get that Emma was just a plot device, but it seems like it would've left far fewer questions open to just have her say, "some freaky psychic is acting crazy and terrorizing me/other ghosts, " rather than "please help my good friend 🥺"
#dead boy detectives#dbda#dead boys live blog#by elise#crystal palace surname von hoverkraft#okay i was slightly incorrect Edwin does make a very small mention of Emma when he's initially bitching about Charles letting Crystal stay#anyway i do like the show but the writing could definitely use polishing in some places#and Emma could have added some fun spice to Crystal's character development!

The replies on this post about Maria Skłodowska-Curie are a perfect example of behavior people have in mind when they talk about usamericans.
You'd think the logical conclusion to being proved wrong would be to say "ok I see, I was wrong, but now I know better" and then move on
But for some reason they will choose to devote twice as much time and energy to DEFEND their RIGHT to be wrong. Amazing
#obviously this particular case started with the French but y'know#also them saying that we're making a big deal out of nothing and who cares anyway every language alters surnames of famous ppl#and at the same time admit that they had no idea that she was polish#like I think this shows that it matters#moje

i know that many polish people had to americanize their surnames when they came to the usa but sooo many times when watching movies i've seen them give characters "polish" surnames that don't even have hints of being an actual polish surname
#i'm not saying they have to use the exact polish spelling and pronunciation#but i want them to at least make the surnames believable#bc i'm watching ice station zebra and some background character is called zabrinczski#and i cannot fucking think of possible source of this surname hhhh#you cannot slap a bunch of z's together with 'ski' at the end and call it a day

I just saw Janusz’s surname and it’s missing a “g” (it should be Bogdanowicz if you’re using existing Polish surnames). (Please ignore this message if it’s rude, I thought it may be a typo!) Also, thank you so so much for making one of your characters Polish and not changing his name (I’m looking at you Teen Wolf!)
It is for sure missing a 'g'!
It's been Anglicised - as in, Bodanowicz is actually found as an Anglicised spelling of Bogdanowicz in Australia, the UK and the USA (along with Bodanowitz).
He's not a Polish person who has freshly moved to Australia and therefore is much more likely to have kept the spelling of his surname. He's someone who had his Polish parents / grandparents come over, at a time when the Anglicisation of surnames was a lot more common (see artists like Jaduiga Bodanowicz).
I'm someone whose legal surname is in the same situation due to my grandparents immigrating over, my legal surname clearly 'foreign' and European but it was also altered very slightly to make it more appealing to people and it was never changed back again! If I go to the Netherlands now, some people would be like 'hey that's not quite right' but it is where I live, because it's legal and it's all I've ever known. My Oma completely changed her first name and was so ashamed of it, I never knew it until a few years before her death. She went by a very 'western' name instead (Coree/Corey).
So yeah, it would for sure be incorrect in Poland, but a lot of foreign names were altered slightly or significantly to make them more 'palatable' when people came to Australia which while not a great practice, I thought would be realistic to Janusz' heritage. There's a whole back-story about it (including why his parents decided to give him a name where they were like 'fuck it, we're not anglicising that anymore'), but basically it was a deliberate choice to more accurately reflect what a lot of foreign immigrants did when they came to Australia some decades ago.
Janusz' relationship to his Polish heritage and how he balances that with being Australian is something that he has some thoughts on in general, since like many Europeans who immigrated over, some worked quite hard to not quite erase their heritage, but simply not teach it to their kids, with the belief 'you're in Australia now.'
Sadly not a typo, just...what scared, displaced and uncertain immigrants did sometimes (and honestly still do sometimes) to try and fit in better in a new home.
#asks and answers#underline the blue#janusz bodanowicz#i would love to say that there's not like quite a few people with the surname bodanowicz around#but there are actually quite a lot on Facebook etc.#and i knew someone with this last name#the Anglicisation of names is like#awful - but also realistic to the experience of many Australians today#like i don't think Janusz can speak Polish beyond what he's learned on Duolingo#because of the experience of so many immigrant kids being locked out of their language#in an attempt to make them assimilate better#it's not good or right#but as that was also my experience as the child of immigrants#i'm writing about it in him dsalkfjdas

Finally getting the bare bones installed! Kirk's got a basic about page (and guidelines) set up, nothing too fancy but I'll try and polish it up this weekend while hunting down some more comics to make icons from. Going Arkham heavy on his portrayal but taking inspiration from Batman: The Animated Series and comics as well (reading as I go along!)
#;; ooc#;; delete later#Feeling happy about it!#It's still a bit... barren but I'll polish it as I go along and flesh out his character#Definitely thinking Swedish origins thanks to his surname#Also included his chronic deafness as a condition#Need to do a little research on that but he's had it for years and he's majorly deaf as an adult so needs implants/hearing aids#If he's not using his serum#He's a lot nicer than Roman when he's not Man-Bat haha
