PART ONE - THE THIN BLUE LINE IS TEARING... there was a time when I was a normal person, living in the bubble of my own little world, surviving life, paying bills, bringing up my child, and working hard. I took the police for granted, they were the annoying headmaster at the back of my mind making me live within rules, i.e. driving within speed limits. I had no knowledge of what was actually going on around me, what the dangers were, and what they were keeping me safe from. For the past decade or so I’ve been working as a civilian within the police (CID Crime Investigator). I’ve now seen behind the curtain, stepped over the blue line, and been shocked at the world behind it. A world where police quietly protect us from; violence, abuse, trafficking, murder, rape, assaults, fraud, gangs, and all manner of injustices that are out there walking among us, 24/7. It's not just in film and TV, what do you think scriptwriters base their storylines on? PART TWO - I am thankful for the brave officers who walk into that dark world at the shout of command, at times single-crewed, not knowing what they’ll see (some images never leave you), whom they’ll meet, how many, what their intentions are, what their mental state is (drugged, drunk, suicidal), if they’re armed, what they’re capable of, and whether they and their colleagues will make it home to their families at the end of that shift. All while being shouted at, spat at, and given constant abuse.  Like the wonderful NHS staff, they worked through COVID, I salute them and all our emergency workers. I think it’s now time we civilians understood what's been happening to the future of our, and our children’s, security. When Theresa May was Home Secretary £50M was taken from the police budget, the aftermath of which is being experienced now, our police service has slowly been run to the ground. The thin blue line is paper thin, it’s tearing. Stations are understaffed, under-resourced, and do not have the tools for the job. Custody blocks have been closed, courts are backlogged, and the criminals are winning. Officers and civilian staff are overworked, suffering from mental health (some suicidal), and leaving in their droves. Courts are failing and communities are not getting the service they need or pay for. For years the privileged government has been asked to help rebuild but to no avail. It’s time that we civvies spoke out, used our voice, and asked them to listen, to do what they're paid for - if they can stop squabbling amongst themselves for a moment... #SteveWhite, chair of the #PoliceFederation, said his 123,000 members, from police constables to inspectors, fear a move towards a more #violent style of #policing as they try to keep law and order with even fewer officers than now. White told #TheGuardian that more cuts would be devastating: “You get a style of policing where the first options are teargas, rubber bullets and water cannon, which are the last options in the #UK.” White said cuts would see the bedrock principle of #British law enforcement, policing by consent, ripped apart. The week ahead sees the federation stage its annual conference, which starts on Tuesday 19 May. The key day will be Wednesday when the home secretary, #TheresaMay, will address rank-and-file officers. Last year May stunned delegates with a speech telling them to reform or be taken over by government, and telling them policing was failing too often. Police leaders have a fine line to walk in opposing cuts. Rank-and-file members are furious at the effects of austerity on their terms and conditions, as well as falling officer numbers nationally. But May and her advisers believe some members of the police force use over-the-top rhetoric in predictions that cuts would lead to #chaos on the streets, and instead believe they should squeeze maximum value out of the public money given. White said police had already endured five years of austerity and were braced for more “swingeing cuts” after the election of a #Conservative government with a majority. White said that since 2010, when the Conservative-led coalition started slashing its funding to police by 20%, the service had been cut by 17,000 officers and 17,000 civilian staff, but had managed to limit the effect on the public. He said the service was now “on its knees”, with some internal projections within policing of a further 20% to 25% of cuts by the end of the next parliament in 2020. This would lead to more than 15,000 officers disappearing off the streets, and only being seen when responding to crime or serious events such as disorder on the streets. #Paramilitary #SpecialForces #Mercenary #SellSword
