disclaimer: yes, I am complaining about cheating in media. Because, yes, writers have the freedom to create what they want but if the morality in creation is free for all forms of media, but no piece of art is exempt from criticism, and that includes criticism on personal moral grounds. I betcha if I said Harry Potter is good, actually, everyone on here would flood my blog telling me I am wrong because of the author's intense prejudice. That being said, I am criticizing cheating in fiction, If you don't like that, don't interact

So often lately I see period dramas where the husband cheats on the wife (ex. Poldark, The Essex Serpent, Queen Charlotte, The Great)...and not only do I despise the cheating trope with every fibre of my being to where I get panic attacks when I consume the media...but specifically with period dramas...

Do these writers not understand the greater implications of a husband cheating on a wife during these periods? More than just the humiliation and heartbreak in the case of a loving, good marriage just like it is today.

In the Western world, probably until certain laws were enacted in the 1900's, if a woman married a man, she was legally his property. She had no legal identity under him. She was financially dependent on him. Any wages she made would automatically go to her husband. Her children were also not legally her children- they belonged to the father. If the husband died, even if the wife was still alive, the children were legally considered orphans.

Women could only rarely gain a divorce from their husbands. In England in the mid-1800's specifically, if a wife divorced a husband she had to prove he had to not only cheat but also be physically abusive, incestuous, or commit bestiality. On the other hand, a husband could divorce a wife just for being unfaithful. Because, kids, there were sexual double standards.

Getting married was often the endgame for a lot of women during that time. Sometimes you couldn't make your own living enough- marriage was a way to secure your entire future financially, with more than enough money to get by. If you were a spinster and middle class, you could get by with a job. But if you are an upper-class lady, the one thing a lady does not do is get a job and work. So upper-class spinsters basically were dependent on their families to get by (ex. Anne Elliott in Persuasion faces this with her own toxic family). As strange as it sounded today, marriage gave them some freedom to go about since a husband could be persuaded sometimes more easily than a father and one had a different home, their servants, etc. A husband was your foundation entirely for being a part of society, and standing up as your own woman.

So if a husband cheated on a wife, that was a threat to take all of that away.

He could give a lot of money that could be used to support his wife and children to the mistress. He could completely abandon said wife for the mistress. And since the wife legally couldn't get a job as he still lived, she would be dependent on any money he would said- and that is IF he sent over any money.

He could take her to court and publicly humiliate her to get a divorce away from her (look up the separation of Charles and Kate Dickens, he would call her mentally ill and say her cooking was bad and that she was having more children than they could keep up with all while having an affair and divorcing her to be with the misteress). And even if the wife was the nicest, more proper, goodest, more rule-abiding never-keeping-a-toe-out-of-line lady in town...as a man, the law was default on his side (look up Caroline Norton's A Letter to the Queen which details exactly that, the poor woman had her earnings as a writer taken by her husband and was denied access to her children from said husband)

So yeah...even if there was "no love" between them (and anytime the wife is portrayed as too boring or too bitchy so He HaS tO cHeAt is brought up is...pretty victim blamey)

So yeah. Period drama writers, if you have the husband have an affair ...just consider the reality of these things and address them, maybe punish the husband for once (*gasp* men facing consequences for their actions?!?!!), and if not, just please find other options and other tropes and devices for once.

The hour was late when Commander Ross Poldark entered the Captain’s ready room unprompted, his features stern and sour – but with a hint of a color to his cheeks brought on by a recent glass of Irish whiskey. Or two.

Jim Hawkins looked up from the chair where he was sitting behind his desk. “What a pleasant surprise,” he said, showing off attentive, blue eyes, and a small dimple on his left cheek.

Ross huffed. These fake pleasantries were beneath him.

The polite smile faded from Hawkins’ lips. He carefully closed the book he had been reading, demonstratively put it aside, and asked in a serious, if not unfriendly, tone, “What is your problem with me, Mr Poldark?” After a small paus, he added. “And do speak freely.”

“You know full well what the problem is,” Ross began, heatedly. “You are too young and inexperienced to hold such a position on a ship as significant as this. Real captaining can’t be learnt in schools and textbooks.” The captain’s raised eyebrow did nothing to dissuade him from continuing to impress his disdain. “You are naive, and your insistence on overindulging in complaisant, so-called ‘diplomacy’, might very well get us killed one day.” 

Hawkings sighed, looking disappointed and even amused of all things. “You mistake politeness for naïvete,” he responded calmly. “And perhaps you don’t know my background as well as you think.”

What was there to know? This was a classic case of a newly graduating officer with zero world experience, not daring to step on anyone’s foot or step one millimeter outside the starfleet’s guidelines, and all-together being either afraid or incapable of making the hard calls. How this innocent-looking, tiny sprig of a man had managed to land this position was beyond Ross’ comprehension; his slight frame looked like it would break from a bout of moderately sized turbulence.

“We should not be pandering to our inferiors,” Ross insisted, hands balling into fists. “If you continue your concept of ‘turning the other cheek’, sooner or later you will turn the wrong kind of cheek – inviting us all to get fucked.”

The coarse language did not seem to offend Hawkins in the slightest. In fact, much to Ross’ annoyance, it rather seemed to amuse him. A hint of a smile was playing on the Captain’s lips before he hid it away. “You paint a very vivid picture, Commander,” he finally commented, seemingly straight-faced. But the sparkle in his eyes betrayed him.

Ross was momentarily taken aback by the unexpected reaction, but then he pulled himself together. Linking his hands behind his back and straightening himself, he elected to stare straight ahead at the opposite wall – just looking at the insufferable boy made his temper flair.

He gritted his teeth. “This is not a joking matter. As Chief Security Officer, it is my duty to keep the ship and its crew safe. But in the end it doesn't matter what I think, only what the enemy does,” he explained, biting off his words. “And sooner or later one of them will see your ‘politeness’ as a weakness that they will take advantage of.”

“I see,” was all the so-called Captain deigned to respond with.

He had had enough. It was completely infuriating how he just sat there calm as clam, completely ignoring all of Ross’ valid criticism! He couldn’t stop himself. ”Perhaps what you need is a demonstration; something to make you realize the seriousness of our situation,” he continued heatedly, all sense of propriety thrown out the airlock. “Perhaps what you need is to be bent over and shown what it’s like to be properly screwed. It might even dislodge that rigid stick up your arse – Sir.”

The silence that followed was compact. And long enough for Ross to realize what he had just said, wondering which part it was that was gonna get him demoted and thrown off the ship. The scraping sound of the chair slowly being pushed back was deafening.

“Mr Poldark,” the Captain began somberly as he rose. “You are greatly overestimating my lack of–,” here, the corner of Hawkins' mouth twitched upwards, “experience. Both in the field and otherwise.”

Ross breathlessly held his tongue as the other man slowly rounded the desk and casually approached him. Yes, definitely a man and not a boy, Ross realized, despite the slight frame. Hawkins didn’t stop until he was close enough that he had to slightly bend his neck to look up at Ross’ flushed face.

The man was standing with his hands at his back, very at ease with himself. His voice was low and sultry when he spoke. “If you need direct proof of my prowess, Commander, all you have to do is ask.” His eyes danced with mirth and confidence.

Ross swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry.Jim’s grin widened invitingly as he took half a step closer – a feline ready to pounce. “But perhaps it is you who could benefit from something stiff up your backside?”

In 2018, he appeared in 3 episodes of Poldark, the historic film Peterloo and had starring roles in Fubar aka Killer Weekend and Ravers. In 2019, he appeared in one episode of Brittania and featured in all six episodes of TV series Don’t Forget the Driver. Danny also does theater productions and short films.

Manchesters' reviews of Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons are in!

And it is truly amazing how much better, and more accurate they are than the nonsense written by London critics.

Lemons wrapped its London run at the Harold Pinter theatre on Saturday, and started its first show at the Manchester Opera House yesterday. Here are some of the reviews I've seen:

If you read any review, read this one. It is by far and away the best, most detailed, and most accurate of all the reviews I've read. It really gives you an understanding of what the play is about, and what it is like to see it.

"With Rourke’s direction, Jenna Coleman and Aiden Turner are able to not only sit comfortable with silence themselves but make an entire audience comfortable with it too and hold that audience in the palm of their hand.  You could hear a pin drop!  Together, Coleman and Turner are utterly charming.  They depict romance and love with an adorable and natural ease, creating a warm fuzzy glow in the theatre.  However, when their relationship is tested, they create a palpable tension and static friction.  As words become limited, their use of body language and nonverbal communication is something to behold, with every intention, every nuance being crystal clear.  Coleman is fierce yet tender and moving.  Turner is charismatic and confident, yet equally vulnerable.  They have both created real, complex, pandora’s box, self-contradicting people, and it is why the audience left feeling like these are people we know.  They play comedy, romance, heartache, and conflict, all within this one act play and it is one heck of a tangy slice they serve up!"  "Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons highlights that when you’re forced to say less, it makes you consider what you say, and how you say it.  It examines how silence, expression, eye contact and body language are powerful tools of communication.  Plus, it has Jenna Coleman and Aiden Turner!  I mean, come on!  What more could you want?!"

hey, just came here to tell you that i'm so so relieved that i was able to find your blog again !! and your jane eyre au fanfic with silco !! honestly, 'bend but not break' was (and still pretty much is) one of my favourite fanfics ever; not aus or silco fanfics, i mean one of THE best fanfics i've ever read. cannot even begin to describe how sad i was when i lost the ao3 link, and when i wasn't able to remember your blog's url.

and it was a shame, because BBNB was just *chef's kiss* 🤌. i literally stayed awake until sunrise reading it the first time, already getting inpatient for the next chapter. and i think it's mainly because you capture silco so so well, and you get 'jane eyre'; and you capture the dreadful air of the novel, and those little acts of tenderness and romance... and your smut it's quite great too. like, i still can't get over The Opera chapter, even after all this time 👀👀

still, now that i did find you, i'm not only gonna read that one, but i'm gonna get started on all your other works !! i know i'm getting repetitive but i just don't know how to express just how great i think your writing is. so for now, i just hope you get to read this !!

I am so very humbled. You have no idea. I'm still learning as a writer, and I am my own worst critic.

I'm sorry I haven't been online to respond to this earlier because I've been really sick with the flu and binge watching Poldark (again).

I've been technically writing fiction since 2015 and it's been a learning curve with each story. For some odd reason, historical eras seem to fit my style in writing. I can do modern but this era I feel like I can sink my teeth into it.

I'm a huge fan of gothic horror/suspense/romance. So, yeah, I guess you can see that in the choices I make.

I must admit I'm not all together happy with the last chapter of BBNB, I might want to change some things in that chapter before moving on (maybe because it might meld into the next chapter better? idk).

Even though I have approximately 5-6 chapters (depending on how big the chapters get, I'm terrible about posting novel-length chapters) left in Bend, it should be an emotional rollercoaster. There are soooo many things I have left to run with before it ends.

As of the lastest chapter, I'm deviating from Jane Eyre a bit, while still holding onto certain plot-points for context but I want to play more with the Regency Arcane/Silco's world.

I do have other ideas for Silco stories I want to write. One will deal with a younger, hot-head SIlco. Another I'm tempted to play with a Roaring 20's Underground.

Then I have a story that I'm developing into an original gothic novel. I have maybe too much on my plate. LOL

It's moments like this when I wish I didn't have to 'work' a regular job to pay the bills because I would literally write all day, every day.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sending me this. It really does brighten my day. That may sound cliche, but it does. I admit I don't have the greatest self-esteem, but I'm working on it.

That someone likes something I've written that much to comment at all and tell me they're re-reading it... my heart is going to explode.

I am working on both Regency Silco stories. When my head doesn't feel like a fog-horn inside of a 100lb bowling ball, I should be in a better space to be creative. It's zapped when you feel exhausted. Working 60hr weeks lately probably hasn't helped my health any.

so according to stills from next week's episode George is gonna remarry ??? do you think the writers will just suddenly gloss over George's grief and act as if he's all better now??

Hi, thanks for the ask! I would like to think that George’s grief won’t be glossed over, but my faith in Debbie’s ability to a) handle storylines consistently, and b) handle George as a character consistently diminished some time around s3. To be honest, I suspect that the issues that George has been struggling with this series will be dismissed as having been “fixed” in the same way that Dwight was never really affected by his PTSD after that one episode. I hope this won’t happen, but I’m keeping my expectations low, so if it turns out not to be the case that those issues are just forgotten about, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

If they are, however, I don’t think it would really make much sense, both from a character and storytelling perspective. George’s grief has clearly affected him deeply, and a couple of conversations with Dwight isn’t really going to be enough to just make that disappear. Not to mention that she wrote an entire episode in which he was essentially tortured by the doctor Cary employed to “cure” him--an experience which, compounded with everything else he was going through, was horrifying enough that he tried to jump off a cliff--and if his grief isn’t something that can be magically fixed, that certainly isn’t either. I would expect anyone, not just George, to be changed in some way by an experience like that, and to have some real, lasting trauma from which they would need to recover, but, in all honesty, I’m not sure if Debbie is interested in properly exploring the ramifications of the plot she herself wrote.

Honestly, I really have no idea what Debbie is even trying to do with George’s overall arc. If she wanted to explore how his mental state had deteriorated in the wake of Elizabeth’s death, why not focus on his recovery over the whole of the series? If she just wants him to be a one dimension villain for her slavery plotline, then why bother drumming up sympathy for him over about half the series only to change direction so abruptly we all get whiplash? Why bother having him horribly abused for a whole episode if she doesn’t acknowledge that it might have had a lasting effect on him? In the end, she tried to do both, but the execution leaves a little to be desired, and so it comes across as stilted and unnatural.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to Debbie trying to use him to facilitate other characters’ storylines. Having him as the villain of the slavery plotline allows the Poldarks and Ned to look better by comparison, whereas his experience with Dr Penrose helps move on Dwight’s storyline about treating mental health (not complaining on that count--though I hate what happened to George in 5x03, their scenes together were pretty good, and quite frankly, I would preferred for there to be more of them over the course of the series). In some ways, I think the (pretty weird) Geoffrey Charles/Cecily/George saga is a result of this as well, in this case to give Geoffrey Charles Drawenna-style angst over the prospect of Cecily marrying his stepfather. I don’t really know how Debbie’s going to write herself out of this whole plot, though don’t think the marriage is actually going to go ahead (I suspect it’ll be stopped at the last possible minute for the sake of drama or something like that), since if she wants to stay true to the later books, George shouldn’t be remarrying until much later, and to someone who isn’t Cecily. I mean, he did seem very unenthusiastic about the match back in 5x04, so it’s possible that he might have a last minute change of heart and call it off, but, to be honest, I feel like the fact that he’s going along with it in the first place is a little strange considering Debbie’s taken such pains to emphasise his love for and grief over Elizabeth in the early part of the series.

Anyway, I’ve rambled enough now so I’d better stop before I go on for paragraphs and paragraphs as if I haven’t done that already ha. I’m prepared to reserve judgement on the whole thing until the series is over--like I said, I might be pleasantly surprised--but if not, at least we’ll always have fic.

As per my last reblog, I would just like to say how much I truly fucking loathe Outlander. It’s a period drama based in the Scottish highlands where none of the actors could be arsed to learn how to pronounce Gaelic properly, despite the Highlands being the historical stronghold of the Gaelic language.

Lmao anyway, my own cultural anger aside, it’s so fucking boring. Oh my god. I had to force myself to watch the first 2 seasons. I really, really wanted to like it, the characters are my peeps, but I just don’t. I hate it. I hate both main characters. Sure, Ross and Demelza make me want to throw things at my tv, but they’ve never made me want to turn my tv off. Also, I don’t want either Ross or Demelza to die at the end of the series, but I wouldn’t give a shit if the two in Outlander did lmaoooo.

Also, I don’t understand how it’s more popular than Poldark for several reasons but what I really don’t understand is how it’s won so many awards when in my humble opinion it’s an overacted melodramatic snoozefest.
