The first episode of the live-action series PokeTsume (or Adventure in my Pocket) will be out in Japan soon, so here's a proper trailer/look at the cast.

PokeTsume (Oct 2023)

A story of a fresh graduate (Nanase Nishino) who moved to Tokyo for her first job, when she received a Pokemon Red game from her mother. It causes her to dive into the world of Pokemon which changes her life and those around her.

SO! I've watched 2 episodes straight of Pack Adventure in your Pocket, or Pokétsume, and here are my Thoughts So Far:

So first of all the OP song and all the BGM are remixes of gen i music and they use gen i sfx regularly and I love that SO much.

The first episode was really spent hammering it into your head that Akagi Madoka is Red. Most obviously, the show loves to intersperse footage of her walking with game footage of Red going to an equivalent or symbolic location, but there's also slightly... SLIGHTLY more subtle details, like how she often wears baseball caps or frequents a cafe called Rouge. And in the intro, she's wearing a ballcap and red jacket with a red background for her name card. She's pretty endearing as a protagonist; she straddles the line between "cheerful go-getter" and "disillusioned young adult" pretty well. I also love how she collur coordinates her hats with her cute outfits

Most of the other characters are pokemon, except for Madoka's rival Midori, who's Green (go figure!) Her arrival was punctuated with footage of the optional Viridian City rival battle and a funky lil remix of the rival encounter theme. So far, she's pretty much just shown up to look good, be a bitch, and leave, and I love her for it. Meanwhile Madoka grits her teeth and tells her coworker that she's an old friend, which is so very Red and Green. Also, Midori's grandpa is literally named Ookido Yukinari, and he narrates the beginning of each episode like Professor Oak in the RGBY intro and the anime

As far as the other ADventure employees, they're all pretty fun characters, but it's really obvious right off that the Charizard guy's the most important of them. I get the sense he might be being set up as Madoka's love interest.

Overall: cute! Definitely aiming for the audience of working 20-30 something adults who grew up playing Pokémon as a kid, definitely trying its damndest to hit the nostalgia buttons, but it's working on me. I'll watch more tomorrow.
