long post of headcanons!

- raihan lowkey is a professional instigator lol leon and sonia finally rekindling their very confusing life long relationship? he’s in sonias ears right after they talk “you know he ALWAYS tells me how impressed he is with your studies…”. him and piers after their first date? “i always knew you couldn’t resist my dragon charm”.

- leaf was born on five island in the sevii islands before moving to pallet around age 6. red, blue and herself started their journeys together at age 11-12. leaf’s starter was squirtle, red receiving bulbasaur and blue with charmander. red and leaf spent a majority of their journey on the road together while blue rushed ahead of them, leaving the two to develop an unbreakable bond that surprises most due to their strikingly opposite demeanours. leaf, much like blue, is extremely extroverted and stubborn. while their similar personalities initially caused a lot of arguing between the two, they found themselves becoming increasingly closer as teenagers when red would spend months travelling solo and at mount silver. as adults, the three own the battle tree in alola and enjoy spending summers there. out of season, red prefers a quiet life of gardening and reading, blue is still gym leader of viridian city and leaf, after growing up in a technology free lifestyle on the sevii islands, developed a love and fascination for computers, now working in the pc system with bill. while leaf believes red and blue to be the most important people in her life, what she misses about her old home the most is the single red headed boy that lived on the island that she frequently spent her days playing with.

- despite knowing ethan and lyra since they were kids, silver never opened up about his life prior to their first interactions until his 18th birthday. the one detail ethan and lyra knew for sure was that he was kantonian due to his very distinct accent that seemingly incorporates a mix of kanto and johto dialects. lyra always playfully teased him about this - saying he sounds similar to champion lance, who sports a extremely similar mixed region accent (a very interesting statement since everyone and their mothers knows about lyras long standing celebrity crush on the dragon champion)

Would love to read all your thoughts on Leon and Raihan's rivalry across all the media

HI there Anon! Ooh this is a good ask! In general I can say I really like Leon and Raihan's rivalry across media but I do wish we got some more attention to it. Starting with the games (SwSh + DLC) I do think that they did a solid job at establish that Raihan and Leon are rivals. I do wish we could've gotten to see more of their rivalry beyond the beginning cutscene but I think at the very least establishing it as a competitive but cordial rivalry was a good step in the right direction. It's one of those things though that makes me yearn for a SwSh prequel so we could see more of their rivalry because at the end of the day, SwSh wasn't focusing on their rivalry (compared to their gen 1 counterparts Red and Blue where the story is indeed based around their rivalry) but rather the player and their various rivalries. Now let's get into Twilight Wings, I think this is where their rivalry really begins to shine. Granted we only see it in the last episode in a small animated battle but I think it did real wonders in establishing that Raihan is actually a genuine challenge for Leon. We see in the 3 on 3 matchup that Raihan actually can knock out a good chunk of Leon's strongest Pokemon (and yes I know it's mentioned in the rare league card but it's nice to have that visual proof for backup). It establishes Raihan as a challenge but also why Leon is as strong as he's claimed to be. And then there's Pokemas which in my opinion the best portrayal of their rivalry. I really like how we get some backstory from Raihan's lodge story about their gym challenge. But more importantly I really like how they managed to in some ways even out their rivalry by having Raihan knock out Leon's Charizard in the Galar Neo Champion Event. Sure ultimately his team loses but this is the first time we see Charizard get knocked out by anyone other than the protagonist (Ash in the anime, and then Victor/Gloria). It's something I really want to see more of in rivalries in Pokemon where it doesn't feels so one-sided which I feel like a lot of Pokemon rivalries end up being. Now for the Pokemon Adventures manga, I can't really say too much about their rivalry there because it just wasn't really touched upon much. I do appreciate Kusaka expanding the relationships among the young adult cast (Leon, Raihan, Nessa, Sonia, and Piers in particular) but given how the SwSh arc was set up there wasn't a lot of time to really get into Raihan and Leon's rivalry. Lastly the Pokemon anime...*sigh*. I have mixed feelings on the anime portrayal of the rivalry. On the one hand I really loved the baking episode with Opal. It was nice to see their rivalry translated into something other than Pokemon battles and that they were both competent at baking. That being said I think their rivalry (and Raihan in particular) was done dirty when it came to the PWC. Their only battle being a 1 on 1 didn't help matters much as a 1 on 1 battle isn't useful for assessing the relative strength of two long-time trainers at their caliber (and this of course is a critique I have of many of the early PWC battles). There should've been at least 3 on 3 like the Twilight Wings episode to show that even though Leon is stronger, Raihan can truly pressure him like no one else (bar Ash). I also personally would've switched the masters ranking so that Ash would've faced Alain (and finally triumphed over him) to get into the masters 8 with Raihan taking Alain's spot. Don't get me wrong I think Alain is very strong and in a revised PWC Masters final (which would've been 16 people if I had any say) he'd still be in it. It's just with this Journeys still being the introduction of Galar, and Raihan being hyped up as a champion level gym leader I think Raihan being among the other league champions would've made a huge statement not only for his character but his rivalry with Leon as well.

looks-wise you can see them in a lot of my drawings .. most prominent ones being raihan's claws and his slit/triangular eyes ^_^ for piers i don't really have That significant changes for him other than piercings and eyebags. hes just there ig

i try to not stray too much from canon for their personalities but given the fact you can't even learn that much about them in the games, i use their pokespe counterparts because they're more fun to work with. when i read that dialogue of them being childhood friends everything went downhill for me i erased like 4 paragraphs because i got embarrassed sorry You can have this chart i whipped up though.. love and peace

IF WE ARE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE MANE 6 THEN I think you're SO right about Hop liking AJ and Leo liking Twilight. I THINK it could go both ways with those two. maybe like. A younger Leon liking Applejack, growing up, and relating to Twilight more and her struggles. the same thing with Hop, I think when he's still young and silly and living in Postwick, he still likes AJ of course. but post-game after he's a professor and learning under Sonia, I think Hop would become a Twilight Sparkle kind of guy much like his brother.

Piers is a Fluttershy fan. I can't tell you why. YES I can.Maybe it's the fanon version of her where she smokes so much weed and does so many drugs because of her anxiety. I think that would catch Piers' attention and he'd be like. Ok.......Awesome. Raihan is a RARITY FAN THROUGH AND THROUGH!!! Prim little horsie that likes fashion. He's ALSO a Rainbowdash fan purely because I think he can relate to "athletic horse that's maybe got just a bit of an ego." They're just opposite sides of Raihan's personality. He is both.

Marnie is a Pinkie Pie fan. Now you're probably like. What the fart. Angel, Marnie would NEVER like PinkieShut up she likes her because Pinkie Pie reminds her of Gloria(pokespe characterization) AND BECAUSE she loves creepypasta. Pinkamena is her all-time favorite.

I caved and ran to read pokespe swsh arc cause I am sooo curious. I caught up and!!! I really wish it was longer!!!? That's what I feel??? Like don't get me wrong it's nice, and I really appreciate bede being expanded and more of a focus (though I miss my hop arc) but I do feel like when we get to a character moment it's very briefly washed away. I adore schilly and sou they are my sillies and I screamed at the raihan piers interactions and piers willingness to almost kill two people that was cool. I feel like there's a lot more potential to crack this arc open into a nice one but it's justtttt missing it. It's a fun read though I get tons of funny faces

ALSO to add to this! While Pokespe is in no way canon this is a panel from the manga that shows Lance and Clair's family tree and the way I (sort of) personally see it.

Lance's mother here is from Viridian, assuming that's where his powers are passed down from. I personally like imagining she's from Galar, specifically, the very old Hammerlocke Gym Leader (much before Raihan's time) and that's the reason why Hammerlocke's uniform is very reminiscent of Lance. It's a way to honor their Gym Leader who sadly, (oh yeah did I mention this), passed on many years ago. Lance is their last remembrance of her.

Random silly Lance headcanon because you asked for fun asks: Everybody in the Blackthorn dragon clan looks like Clair EXCEPT Lance. This is fact, and no one has ever questioned it since he was born. Anyone who's ever visited Blackthorn has been greeted by a sea of fluffy blue-haired, friend-shaped dragon trainers and then The Spiky Red One, and they are expected to take this at face value. (His ass is NOT adopted though, he's just like that)

That's SO crazy because I like thinking the same thing!

My HC reasoning is that his mother, who's not from Blackthorn nor Johto has the red hair genes, while his Blackthorn side of the family has mainly dark blue/black and blue hair (Like Clair).

Basically, he's the Red Gyarados in his predominantly "normal-colored" Gyarados family LOL.

What rare pairs have you fallen into? I tried talking about it to some, but half the text ends up with me explaining why "no this isn't an age gap ship" because the character ages on the wiki for earlier gen are never updated for the time passed until future gen. Try explaining an anime-verse timeline using partial game logic and it's even worse lmao, and then nobody's reading all that.

kbnz… piers and raihan. honestly i don’t think it’s really that rare, it’s probably pier’s most popular ship but when leon/raihan are the second most popular pkmn ship on ao3, i think its on the rare side lol. they have like 10 or less pieces of dialogue together all in post game but it literally fuels me. they’re in my top 3 pkmn ships in general i love them!!! (i’ll take any excuse to talk about them)

piers and sonia! i love opposites attract and while i have them as besties in my au/hc i loved their post game dialogue + moments together… so cute …. i think i’ve seen like 5 pieces of fanart tops

alder and cynthia….? i saw that microsecond of him flirting with her in the anime and when legends very loosely implies (with the help of fan theories) their ancestors possibly knew eachother my brain went … yep!!! idk i definitely think they love yapping about history together and travelling :3

red/blue/leaf!!! another case of in my au i write them all in monogamous relationships and really i see them as soulmates but recently came around to them as a giant ship (the power of fanart + fics)

probably my most controversial one … gamecanon red and yellow from pokespe… controversial for the sake i know mixing gamecanon and spe is borderline sacrilegious but idk i vibe heavy with them. i recently saw my first ever piece of fanart of them (that wasn’t mine LMAO) on twitter and i was literally shook cause while i think the concept isn’t that far out you just never see it? is it even specialshipping at that point lol

Why I like them: I fully expected this guy with his John Cena-esque go getter attitude and aggressively marketable ace to annoy the shit out of me, but the truth is is that hating Leon is like hating a puppy. You just can't. He's just a nice fuckin dude that wants to keep everyone safe even though he's just one man. There's also the fact that he's essentially a grown up ex-protagonist which the game delves into a little with his complicated emotions surrounding losing the title he's had since he was eleven by the end of the game and the fandom's done some FASCINATING psychological deep dives with. 

Why I don’t: I feel like GameFreak failed a bit with show don't tell with him. Some of the ways GameFreak try to make him seem really intelligent and capable are...a little on the nose to say the least. Like for instance him estimating how much Hop has grown during his introduction scene COULD be taken as a hint they don't get to see each other often but nah I really do suspect they wanted the kiddies to be like WOW THIS GUY IS SO SMART HE CAN DO MATH lol. I do kiiiind of suspect the fandom put more effort into analyzing the guy and the kind of havoc being a massive celebrity since the age of 11 can wreak on your personal life than GameFreak ever did but that's very much not a bad thing IMHO. I'm not one of those IF IT'S NOT STRICT CONFIRMED CANON IT'S OF THE DEVIL people (and honestly rather detest them) 

Favorite episode (scene if movie): I...don't think the Anime showcased the better sides of his personality well (he loses the protective streak and just kind of comes off like a self-absorbed manchild that everyone loves because he can defy basic Pokemon battle logic in the same way Ash can. He's a protagonist But Annoying This Time) so I'm not terribly interested in seeing more. 

Favorite season/movie: See above. 

Favorite line: Tbh I don't have one particular standout one immediately coming to mind and I'm feeling too lazy to go through his quotes page rn. His catchphrase IS fun to meme about I will say. 

Favorite outfit: He absolutely kills everything that's not the Sponsorship Cape tbh. The guy has GOOD fashion sense despite the memes, corporate was just holding him back. 

OTP: Raihan/Piers/Leon for reasons I already went into in the Raihan response lol (the vibes between him and Rai are interesting and pretty damn hard to deny but Piers is holding up 90% of my mental health on his bony little shoulders rn and also I wanna see him and Leon interact more) I'd also love he and Sonia to work thier shit out, they are cute as FUCK together in Pokespe 

Brotp: The platonic Raileon enjoyer strikes again. Id also certainly take he and Piers being bros too. Also he and Nemona would be absolutely insufferable together and I'd love to see it someday lol 

Head Canon: One thing that was inspired the anime and a certain infamous wall punching scene is that through no real fault of his own he and Raihan's relationship was actually dangerously close to fraying for a bit. He WANTS to be a good and supportive friend to his favorite person but he's gotten fame and empty adoration pretty much handed to him for long enough that he can't REALLY understand what's going on in Raihan's head, the immense pressure he's putting himself under and the frankly unhealthy behaviors he's starting to develop. It's gonna take the pressure of the championship being gone for Leon to stop being the impossible standard Raihan's harming himself with and start being an uncomplicated source of companionship again. On a brighter note he's a good enough guy that once he becomes Chairman he's gonna prove he deserves that position by taking steps to reverse Rose's power consolidation to make sure no one person can cause that much trouble for the nation of Galar again. He'll prove his worthiness to rule by NOT being a total corporate dictator. 

Unpopular opinion: I've bitched about finding him annoying in the anime enough so instead I'll say I actually don't mind how involved he was in the game plot, it's honestly kind of weird other adults HAVEN'T been like "why are we letting random ten year olds go into very dangerous situations unaccompanied" before if you think about it

A wish: The same as the others, I'd love to see him again IF he's not miserable or acting like an ass.
