Johto gets dressed up for Pokemoon Night

A popular Johtonian holiday, Pokemoon night celebrates community and connections with pokemon and nature. This evening partygoers will dress up as pokemon, and stay up until dawn to dance, play games, and tell traditional stories from Johto's past. But what is the origin of this full moon holiday?

While the exact story changes from person to person, all interpretations tell of a malicious pokemon nicknamed 'The Nightmare Bringer', which most scholars agree is likely Darkrai. The Nightmare Bringer visited a village every first full moon of autumn, leaving one resident permanently trapped in a nightmare or killed while the rest of the town experienced their own vivid nightmares.

One young child noticed that the wild pokemon weren't affected by this visit, and suggested that the population of the village pretend to be pokemon themselves to avoid The Nightmare Bringer. Sure enough, the next time it entered the town there were no humans around, just pokemon that did not go to sleep until the sun rose.

No nightmares or deaths occurred that night, or any Pokemoon night after that as the population donned their disguises. Eventually, The Nightmare Bringer stopped appearing altogether but the night was still celebrated as a way to foster community and an excuse to dress up.

Today Pokemoon night is observed throughout Johto and Kanto, with smaller celebrations being brought abroad. Most cities hold an official Pokemoon event, often including games, free food, and pokemon costume competitions.

Johtonians encourage foreigners to join in on the festivities, don a pair of eevee ears, grab a rage candy bar, and stay safe from The Nightmare Bringer.
