having a REALLY weird art day but heres my trainersona.... probably not a true part of my hypothetical pokemon fangame (since that has gyms based on themes rather than types) but maybe it could make an appearance as a miniboss you can fight multiple times, with a random team selected from a pool of builds. it was originally a ranger but it kept befriending so many pokemon that followed it back to HQ that they told it to just start catching them so now its a shiny hunter on the reserve ranger squad. also its related to elesa from unova

Years ago, in a search for more creature collectors, I ended up reading the Wikipedia pages for several games, including Pokemon Ranger. It's description intrigued me at the time, but I didn't have the console it would be on, so just put it out of my mind for a while. One of my partners has it, so I've recently been playing it, and it really does feel perfect for me specifically.
First of all, I have a strong interest in taking a naturalist approach to fantasy creatures. That's why I enjoy Bugsnax so much- the creatures are beings in an environment with behaviors and preferences. It's also why (New) Pokemon Snap is my favorite pokemon game. Anything that treats it's monsters as part of an ecosystem with natural behaviors, interactions and environmental niche's will resonate with me. Pokemon Ranger does that perfectly- Pokemon always feel native to their habitat, they have styles (avoidant vs. aggressive), their field moves feel natural, and they can't be taken out of their natural environment.
Also, I like the philosophy of the games, especially the lower emphasis on combat. Instead of being a Pokemon Trainer, I'm playing as a Ranger. It feels very emotionally satisfying to be doing tasks such as putting out wildfires or helping townsfolk with lost pets, rather than fighting hikers and fishermen and preschoolers. This isn't a "battling is actually violent and bad" take, I accept the lore of the games. But it is the difference between being a champion dog trainer and being a local park ranger/animal control.
The setting also hits a lot of buttons for me. I have a deep personal connection, which I connect to my faun identity, to Spring as a season. The Fiore region having seasonal towns was an especially nice touch for me.
If there are drawbacks, it would be that the game feels very hand-holdy at times, often teleporting me right to the next quest or not letting me leave the area. And I knew when I started that there would eventually be a point where the gameplay frustration outweighed the pleasure of the setting and plot. For me, that point was hit in the Salamence Fight in the trial of destruction. I was really struggling, and looking up guides seem to indicate this was a notorious level, harder even than things later in the game. So I've stopped there to try the sequel, because ultimately I like the world and premise and action, and didn't want to stop yet, but could get no further in the original game.
I don't consider myself any kind of Pokekin (something I've questioned before). But playing Poekom Ranger has really hit me hard in a "If I lived in the Pokemon World, this is how I would be". I've never vibed with having a trainersona or a gym leadersona. But I could have a rangersona. It's so tantalizingly easy to imagine myself as a ranger, with a Rockruff partner, living in the perpetual temperate springtime of Ringtown, wrangling nearby Chikorita. It would be living the dream.
