THE SILVER BRIDGE COLLAPSE - Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio. On December 15, 1967, the U.S. Route 35 Silver Bridge (built in 1928) lost structural integrity and collapsed into the Ohio River, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. This tragic accident became connected to the local legend (and popular cultural myth) of the cryptid “Mothman,” a mysterious flying being who was allegedly seen by hundreds in the area throughout the year and, seemingly, disappeared after the the bridge disaster. The notion of the Mothman being a “harbinger of doom” stems from this accident. National bridge inspection standards were soon instituted following this tragic event - one of the worst in America’s History. The replacement Silver Memorial Bridge to Ohio was constructed down-river in 1969. This stone monument, at the former bridge site (Point Pleasant), commemorates the sad (and significant) occasion of 50 years ago.
