So after 110 hours, I finally beat Persona 5 Royal. Before going into complete FFVII mode, I wanna lay out all my thoughts.
Blah, blah, blah, spoilers for everything under the cut.
To start off, I loved Royal. The gameplay was so much fun and it felt like such a natural evolution from vanilla P5. Probably my favorite change was what wad done with Baton Pass. Trying to pass to your entire party was very fun and very satisfying, especially if Joker got the Ă4 or even Ă3 and got to abuse a possibly charged Hassou Tobi lategame. It was pretty broken, but I don't mind things being broken once you go to the effort of figuring things out. Speaking of broken thingsâ
Showtime attacks are super cool. I didn't know what to think of them at first because of how stupidly strong they are, but after I got to some harder boss fights where doing about 1k damage per attack would only get rid of about a small fraction of the shadow's health, I wasn't complaining.
(Also, I never actually got to see Joker and Violet's showtime. Oops.)
The fact that the damage scaled like that was really good, especially once you get into the third semester where party members have severe and colossal damage moves and even healer Morgana can do 150 damage per basic attack without buffs on an enemy without debuffs. The enemies' damage output remained kind of sad though, but uh....you can't win 'em all ;;
To finish showtime talk, Joker and Crow's showtime was heccin' great. I never skipped it. It was Batman in my animu JRPG so it was 10/10. It also did way more damage than most of my party members' showtime attacks so ey. It finished off that Yoshitsune request boss too with around 2.4k damage so I'm obligated to like it. On that note, how is showtime damage calculated? Do certain showtimes do more damage, or does it just depend on the offensive stats of the party members using it?
Technical damage was beefed up too, and I probably should have tried to take advantage of it more than I did but I never figured out how to make technical damage reliably knock an enemy down. I know that there was a way to do it but I never figured it out. Yes, yes, I know it was because I skipped tutorials but everything else was so busted, I never felt the need to go back and read said tutorials. I did read that book about technical damage though in-game, but it just added more technical combinations.
Onto other changes though, it could have been because I was playing on hard, but status ailments became about 10 times more useful. ...Actually, no, it was definitely because I was playing on hard, but even so, I felt like more bosses were weak to them when compared to P5. They went back to being mostly immune to them, especially in the new semester, but during and before October or so, status ailments became invaluable. It could have been because I sucked that much, but my party members, and even sometimes Joker, would get left with double or even single digit HP by near everything, even if I debuffed and buffed. Queen got regulated to a forget bot, but man it carried me through some boss fights. ... i.e., Kaneshiro's fight. Well, that and Mona's confuse.
I liked the Will Seeds too. They were a fun way to kind of change up the palaces and for me to hunt down. Even though yeah, they are pretty broken (especially with the accessory you get from the 2nd palace being able to get rid of elemental weaknesses for whoever has it equipped, not to mention the ability to give charge or concentrate to another party member), I still can't say I used them over my SP adhesives most of the time. I used the one that got rid of elemental weaknesses on Crow, but that was just because I could only use him and Joker at the time and did not want enemies to get another move on him to get another chance to hit either of them.
The changes to Mementos were amazing. Like the rest of them, they were pretty busted, but still. Amazing. I feel like I'm in the minority with this, but I didn't mind Mementos. In fact, I kind of liked going through the grind of going through it. Although...tbf, I kind of liked Tartarus too. Its 264 floors were a bit much, but I liked being able to turn off my brain, put on a podcast or YouTube video in the background for me to listen to then go through Tartarus in one or two in-game nights.
Back to Mementos, collecting stamps and flowers for Jose was fun, and being able to change the cognition for Mementos was busted. Since you can get EXP from auto-killing, you get over-leveled very fast. It doesn't help that you have to backtrack floors for stamps since they randomly generate, so you get even more money, experience, and items. On the bright side though, no, I didn't need to wander around singing "I've Been Working on the Railroad" with Mona and Skull for an hour and a half trying to find the materials for the Eternal Lockpick (which was renamed in Royal to Permapick ... I guess???)
Because of the changes you can make to boost item, money, and EXP gains, Mementos became the prime grinding area. Even more than the card shuffle thing in P3. Since you got so much EXP from ramming shadows even without leveling up EXP gain. I put all my stamps into getting more items and money until I couldn't anymore and I had near max every single crafting item, and never had to worry about the cost of anything ever. Combined with the money gains from killing shadows, you can also pick up sellable treasure from the item cubes in Mementos and it can end up selling for well over a million yen. So getting to max didn't even require Joker abusing the confuse status ailment or abusing the shadows with "You can do better than that."
I didn't mind the Mementos music, even when I was playing the game without something else playing for me to listen to, but now that Mementos does have new music, yeah, I realize now how much better it is. I wouldn't listen to it alone like I would Rivers in the Desert or anything, but it was a nice change. I listened to one of the songs before the game had its western release and didn't like it all that much, but actually playing the game while hearing it made me actually like it.
I got to level 99 though before the game was over. It made it so Joker and Crow were able to tag-team the Reaper then kill it in 3 turns. I had thought that trophy would have been a lot harder to get lol. It was pretty weird seeing the Reaper in such clear lighting though due to the new Mementos area though, I have to say.
Onto the bosses though...
I loved the changes to the bosses (except the 5th one but that's just because I hate everything about the 5th palace, even if Royal did make it about a million times more bearable).
Kameshida having cognitive Shiho and Mishima as helpers for the boss fight was such a good change, and made him about that much more hateable.
Madarame's boss fight in vanilla P5 was the hardest boss in the game for me, even on normal mode, but it was made so much easier in P5R. Madarame didn't bring back his painting form, but instead brought back elemental versions of himself specifically so the player can abuse Baton Pass. Baton Pass combos are extremely satisfying to pull off, so I enjoyed it immensely. Honestly, having that as the second boss in the game was so much of a better decision than what was in P5. That, or I'm still salty about all the deaths I had from fighting him the first time.
Kaneshiro was definitely harder, and I was a little stuck when he called his cronies out to guard him. Mona and Queen using confuse and forget while Skull and Joker attacked Kaneshiro made it a lot more bearable though. I also kept using spotlights on Joker so the enemies would attack him. He had Shiki Ouji equipped and they only ever did physical moves when my status effects missed, so I was never at risk for losing the fight. ... And then of course Skull and Queen finished it off with a showtime attack after Mona got yeeted.
Sphinx mom was a lot easier. I didn't know that the right dialogue choices made it so Oracle would guard you until someone told me, so I was sitting there surprised at how much easier it was lol. I did get stuck at the end though because it didn't look like I was damaging it. I thought Oracle needed to bring back the crossbow so I just kept buffing and healing. It took about 10 minutes for me to get bored and start attacking it again and it turned out I could attack it, but it was just that sphinx mom's HP wasn't visually moving before eventually going down. Joker still used Shiki Ouji which had learned an immunity to wind so. Easy victory (ignoring the part where I'm a dumbass).
I switched to easy mode for Okumura. I just did not care at all. I hate his palace, I hate the music, and the enemies could range from being easier to kill than the enemies in the first palace to being a pain in the ass, so I wanted to have it be over. If I didn't have an unreasonable hatred for the 5th palace though, I probably would have liked the change. It was challenging without being complete BS, at least much more challenging than how it was originally in P5. Having the enemies run off though did get pretty annoying when I was trying to beat it legit but I was just so done at that point, it was more on me than the game lol.
Part of the reason why I was so eager to get through Okumura's palace though was to get to Sae's palace. Because I love Sae's palace, and just in general, the entire month of November. It has amazing story bits, still the height of P5's story if you ask me, a great palace, and Whims of Fate is one of my favorite tracks from P5's OST. Sae's boss was even changed to when she spins the wheel, whatever element it goes to, she uses that element and her resistances would change. I loved that, and it was extremely fun to take what you more or less should have learned about enemies' attacks and their correlating weaknesses and use them for a boss fight. So much better than the original where you don't need strategy at all other than "hit her hard lol."
Shido's boss fight was changed to be super climactic. They made it easier for the sake of Joker being able to confront the dude that got him a criminal record and directly ruining his life, and I can't complain. It felt amazing to 1v1 him. The game fixed the possibility of being screwed by it by having him attack in a certain order like the twins do in their special fight, so that was nice at least.
Yaldabaoth's boss fight was the same. Still easy enough, as long as you're careful. Or...not careful but extremely lucky. I wasn't able to finish it off while it was charging up its almighty attack, but my entire party ended up dodging it so it didn't even matter lmao. Now that I think about it, it very easily could have been because of that one Will Seed accessory that makes you dodge attacks but... I don't care. I was still super lucky I didn't get wiped and be forced to start the fight over starting from the Holy Grail.
The new boss... Uhm... It was taking way too long so I ended up cheesing it with Haru's third persona's new move that basically makes you invincible for a turn halfway through the fight. ^^; Noir was a Vault Guardian bot, Queen just healed and took advantage of one of the tentscles' nuclear weaknesses to Baton Pass to Crow when she could, and then Joker and Crow did all the work. Crow's third tier persona's almighty move kicked ass and you know what else kicked ass? Hassou Tobi abuse. The other 2 phases weren't even really fights, so at least that kept it from dragging too much, despite all the phases it had.
When Joker and the boss had that punch-out fight though, I lost my shit. I was laughing so hard I started to cry and my back was hurting. I don't even remember why I thought it was so funny, but I was laughing my ass off. I couldn't even press X to get Joker to punch because I was laughing so hard. Right before it happened, I joked to my sister that a tutorial would pop up and suddenly the gameplay will have the controls from that P4 fighting game and you have to learn that in order to have one last showdown. And then I got the prompt to punch. Then Joker punched. And I started laughing.
11/10 would punch Adam Kadmon man again
On the topic of the new stuff though...
Kasumi/Sumire/Violet was pretty fun to use but badly, badly overshadowed by both Joker and Crow, at least during boss fights. She offered to join the party before Shido's palace and she really should have joined then. Maybe she would just be absent for the Mementos dungeon & Yaldabaoth/Holy Grail boss fights, but she should have been there for Shido's palace. I liked her wanted gimmick of being the crit'er, but when you get her, Mona's third tier persona learns an AOE Lucky Punch, Joker already has high crit, and I would always baton pass to Crow because of his severe almighty AOE Ă3. Plus, the way I built my Joker with practically exclusively two personas, Yoshitsune and Kuguya Picaro, he was already the phys and light attacker except with the addition of being able to have an auto-concentrate at the start of every fight (I have no idea whyâit's something with Yoshitsune but idk what it is), the charge skill, Yoshitsune's nature of tripling the effect of charge, and the additional electric damage. She should have been a party member before the new semester. Obviously this isn't the case for everyone, but for me personally, I didn't often find use for her, especially since she can't do colossal or even severe magic damage. She is a very good physical party member, but again, Joker already covers that better than any other party member can, including Skull.
Crow was a great party member though. I used him in every request and boss fight after I got him. I was a little salty he couldn't switch back and forth from Loki and Robin Hood but I suppose if he did, he'd make Violet even more obsolete lol. I liked Loki while playing P3, so I'm glad I was able to use that persona again. He had Debilitate which was amazing. Queen learns Checkmate when getting to the third tier persona, which is an AOE version of it, but honestly, whenever I was fighting a boss that I thought needed it at that point in the game, I didn't need it to be multi-hitting. Plus, it costed about 90 SP and no way I was using that over her healing, defense buffs, and nuclear damage.
But anyway, back to Crow, I loved using him. He basically turned into my almighty damage dealer, even with his somewhat weaker magic, at least compared to his strength stat, but considering the final boss fight, it was extremely helpful. It did take up a lot of SP, but I had 5 Somas, a ton of SP restoratives, and had basically asked Kawakami to make me either curry or coffee every single night I was able to, so I pretty much had an infinite supply of it.
It helped that P5R made Akechi a much more likable character too. I liked him all right in P5, but didn't find him all that sympathetic, and thought that the characters treating him so sympathetically was extremely jarring considering all the horrible shit he did (which includes making orphans of both Haru and Futaba). That still kind of holds true, but since you can actually build a social link with him outside of the story, you can see more of his character and it improved him in leaps and bounds. Not to mention that his 8th confidant rank was....something else ^^; having a section of the new story too with just Joker and Akechi, (and kind of Sumire too, but mostly just those two) was awesome. I loved seeing them team up to punch Adam Kadmon man in the face. Plus, having more time with him in the Phantom Thieves without pretense had him going "I am surrounded by idiots" basically the whole time he was there. LikeâI even felt disappointed that Akechi was actually dead and he didn't survive. That's a huge improvement over from me wishing one of the dialogue options was "fuck you lmao" during his death scene at the end of Shido's palace when he asked the Phantom Thieves to promise him to change Shido's heart.
For Sumire though, she had a good character arc. Like her gameplay though, she was badly overshadowed by both Akechi and Maruki. Even still, I liked her character arc and everything, and her social link. Even if I ended up liking Kasumi more in the end anyway rip
That's kind of all I have to say about her, oof. She was good, but other elements took attention away from her pretty badly.
Maruki though... Maruki was amazing. He was a fantastic antagonist because I got to punch him in the face, his palace was amazing, I loved the music, the different sections were cool, and I even liked the color maze bridge puzzle thing. I definitely wouldn't like it so much if I ever replayed it, especially if I try to get that final Will Seed, which wasn't hard, but did take kind of a while, but I don't think I will be so it's not a problem.
He had such good motivations, and the fact that he didn't ever actually hurt anyone other than when he punched Joker in the face made him really sympathetic and redeemable to me. At the end of the day, all he actually wanted to do was make people happy and not have to suffer, and was willing to destroy himself in order to achieve it. But just like with every belief, it went too far and he took away people's free will and ability to pick for themselves. The kind of moral question about the entire thing was very interesting, and I kind of wish it was more further addressed. There should have been Sojiro or some other character that was perfectly happy in Maruki's alternate reality so they could challenge the Phantom Thieves in a way Maruki wasn't able to. Still, what was done was really good and I liked it a lot.
...
Even all that said, I have no idea why the hell Joker could not use Satanael. There was such a perfect opportunity to use it once Maruki evolved his persona to Adam Kadmon, a giant persona. Hell, it was still small when compared to Satanael. It's after beating Yaldabaoth so Joker should have access to it. It would have been epic to be able to use a giant Satanael in a normal-ish boss fight. I'm sure there are some explanations as to why, but the game never mentions it or even acknowledges Satanael so it doesn't count and I'm still bitter. The writers forgot that Joker has a persona literally as big as a cognitive god and that kind of broke some immersion for me. Immersion completely went out the window once Joker and Maruki started punching each other but STILL. Satanael's not that great a persona, but having it show up in the story again would have been so awesome to use a persona about as big as Shibuya more than once.
Hardly comparable to my beef about Satanael, but I wish that while the party members were acting as Phantom Thieves, or at least while they're in the metaverse, the names on their text boxes would change to their Phantom Thief names. There's no reason why they didn't, especially since the characters exclusively use their Phantom Thief names to call each other anyway. It's not a huge deal or anything, but I would have liked it.
I loved Royal, and totally think it's better than P5 vanilla. Its new semester kind of takes away from the superb ending of the vanilla game, but the new stuff still makes up for it. Don't get me wrong, you can still get the original ending from the vanilla game in Royal, at least I'm pretty sure you can, but it involves you missing out on all the new content, including Violet as a party member and getting Crow back, plus Joker's showtimes so it's not worth it imo
I wasn't actually looking forward to the game when it was announced, or even planning on getting it, but I had the Phantom Thieves' edition pre-ordered for me as a Christmas present so I wasn't going to...not play it lol. I'm extremely glad I got it though, even if I otherwise wouldn't have, and now that I have finished it, I'm very happy with the game. The gameplay's improved by leaps and bounds, and the new content was all amazing.
... And I got to punch Maruki in the face.
I did end up getting the platinum trophy for Royal too, so despite the Phantom Thieves den thing, I don't see myself going back to it, at least any time soon. It was an amazing experience, but I can set my sights back to FFVII now lol.
...Although, I did hear you can fight the twins and Lavenza so uhhh maybe i won't be shelfing it so soonâ

hc; og dante 12
In honor of @dwellsinmeâ who inspired me with her HC to post mine, because Iâve had it but havenât gotten around to actually posting about it.
Dante - my Dante - is very much ADHD.Â
Itâs kind of a tossup whether his nature as a hybrid has anything to do with it (see: PJO series), but he is definitely, definitely ADHD and has been since he was a kid. Unfortunately, in the late 70s-early 80s, neurodivergence wasnât as big or talked about a concept, so no one really had any idea, and Danteâs so detached from the normal human life at this point itâs probably never come up and never will. He functions....as well as one would expect with that on top of cPTSD and depression, but, yknow, he manages. So itâs never been a real, true problem. Drove his parents and teachers crazy as a little, and definitely drives people crazy now, but...thatâs just how Dante is.
Iâm gonna go into more detail under a cut just because long post incoming:
To start Iâm just gonna drop a list of symptoms here, so you can kinda see what Iâm getting at: bolding is mine, and is the symptoms Dante visibly explicitly shows and expresses (for the record, he definitely has combined type, which has symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactive)---
Inattentive type:
Be easily distracted, miss details, forget things, and frequently switch from one activity to another
Have difficulty maintaining focus on one task
Become bored with a task after only a few minutes, unless doing something they find enjoyable
Have difficulty focusing attention on organizing or completing a task
Have trouble completing or turning in homework assignments, often losing things (e.g., pencils, toys, assignments) needed to complete tasks or activities
Appear not to be listening when spoken to
Daydream, become easily confused, and move slowly
Have difficulty processing information as quickly and accurately as others
Struggle to follow instructions
Have trouble understanding details; overlooks details
Hyperactive type:
Fidget or squirm a great deal
Talk nonstop
Dash around, touching or playing with anything and everything in sight
Have trouble sitting still during dinner, school, and while doing homework
Be constantly in motion
Have difficulty performing quiet tasks or activities
Be impatient
Blurt out inappropriate comments, show their emotions without restraint, and act without regard for consequences
Have difficulty waiting for things they want or waiting their turn in games
Often interrupt conversations or others' activities
Okay, so maybe he leans a lot heavier into hyperactive type, but, I mean. Watch him doing stuff, especially in 3 and 4 --- heâs definitely very easily distracted, doesnât seem to listen a lot, and focus is only kept when heâs really interested in something, otherwise he super ignores it. And details? Ha! What are those, he just jumps in and does things.
As for the hyperactive symptoms, I donât think I need to point out many specific instances, itâs...we all see it. Heâs constantly running his mouth, constantly in motion, constantly moving, playing with things, bouncing on his feet, fidgeting, fighting, moving a lot as he fights...I mean look at him playing with every single new toy he gets immediately, and especially look at him with Cerberus. Heâs loud, heâs present, heâs very impatient --- we see that a lot in 3 re: puzzles and locks --- and honestly heâs very good at interrupting people. Not to mention that thing about saying inappropriate things, and being unable to restrain emotions or actions? Definitely Dante, demonstrably so.
Other symptoms Dante definitely has --- and this is speaking as me, an ADHD person, who sees a lot of my bullshit in Dante --- are:
MOTIVATION ISSUES (donât @ me Vergil): Look at this guy, he canât or wonât do anything that doesnât click into his interests (and even then!!) unless he gets pushed or bullied or bribed into it. He needs to be given a significant and heavy reason to get up and do shit, otherwise heâll just sit around or blow it off and claim pickiness. And sure, he is picky --- because specific criteria on What Will Interest Him is another ADHD thing!! --- but man, even then, you can see in the anime he has to be pushed out the door to get shit done sometimes. This is clearly contributing to his broke situation. And when heâs Depressed itâs worse, look at the state of his office in 5!!
REJECTION SENSITIVE DYSPHORIA: Now this one isnât quite as obvious, because heâs REALLY GOOD at pretending heâs fine, but he really does not cope well with being yelled at/rejection/being pushed away by people, especially people he likes. Thatâs a mood. This was worse by far when he was a kid, and is part of why heâs such a pushover and can easily be bullied into doing things for people he likes or people he wants to like him. He doesnât want to be rejected or criticized, so time to do what they want me to! No problem, no argument!
SLEEP PROBLEMS: Either he is like LOOK MA NO SLEEP I CAN DO THIS ALL WEEK or heâs sleeping constantly and looking like Rip Van fucking Winkle. Now this does overlap with the depression, but ADHD internal clocks are borked to hell and back, too, so his sleep schedule and how much/little he sleeps is just. What even. How.Â
TIME PROBLEMS: Either something is Now or it is Not Now and if it is Not Now it is not worth caring about or worrying about.
IMPULSE CONTROL: As mentioned above, but with the added problem of âwhat is delayed gratification I donât know herâ, and needing rewards for what heâs doing Now Please Thanks.
DECISION MAKING: When confronted with difficult decisions, either you a) freeze because AAHHHH TOO MUCH or b) just Do Something because panic without thinking. Also what the FUCK is a plan, there are no plans, plans donât exist.
BOREDOM IS EVIL: No being bored, ever, oh god, nope, fuck that cannot be bored boredom is the devil and causes BAD BAD THINGS. Must always be doing things, needs entertainment, needs stimulation or will quickly devolve into a lump on the couch. If thing is boring, will NOT do it, nope, fuck that.
CHILDLIKE BEHAVIOR: Like whew. I mean. Local 42yo man acts like a 10yo boy pretending to be an 80s action hero like in the movies, constantly, as if he thinks that mimicking that is how Adults Are. And just, generally acting like an enormous child.
WEIRD KID: Just...generally coming off as weird or different or Outside The Norm, not good with normal human social cues and responses to things, acts weird and like an outcast and doesnât seem to quite fit in with normal people.
FIXATIONS: Pizza pizza pizza NEVER GET BORED OF PIZZA I COULD EAT PIZZA EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE also sundaes.Â
MUSIC...GOOD: This is more subjective, but Danteâs thing with music strikes me as a thing mostly because I am that person who NEEDS TO BE LISTENING TO MUSIC ALL THE TIME HOLY SHIT, I CANNOT STAND IF THERE IS NO BACKGROUND NOISE TO MY LIFE. I get so antsy I want to jump off a cliff when thereâs no background noise/music in the car and I Need music on to do anything; but at the same time I canât listen to podcasts or videos because music I just tune out and itâs There, Good, Wonderful, but if itâs something to concentrate on with Words To Understand, it is BAD and it needs Full Focus or I Donât Hear SHIT. So, yeah, that too.
NON SEQUITURS EVERYWHERE: You know that THING where topic A comes up and in your head you jump ahead five things in a way only you understand, and then you speak up and bring up topic F out of nowhere because YOU got to it in your head but everyone else is like what the fuck, so you kinda shut up or laugh it off? Yeah. Also that other feel when youâre still on topic B but the rest of the group went on to topic C or D and youâre internally screaming because NO I STILL HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO SAY GET BACK HERE.
WHAT THE FUCK IS VOLUME CONTROL THIS IS MY NORMAL SPEAKING VOICE IâM NOT SHOUTING????: Self explanatory.
BAD AT HEARING THINGS: Needs VERY specific instructions, but also things need repeating a lot because heâs quick to accidentally tune stuff out.
READING: Trouble reading LONG blocks of text. Magazines Good, short articles Good.
Local Man Laughs At Own Jokes, WHAT THEYâRE FUNNY
MALADAPTIVE DAYDREAMING: He did this more as a kid, but it still applies; local child looks like heâs just kind of vibrating quietly but otherwise paying attention? NOPE heâs having an epic adventure in his head and is not listening to a word. Vergil will tell him later if itâs important.
THE LEG BOUNCE: Speaking of, he CANNOT SIT STILL. Heâs at the MINIMUM rocking in his seat or bouncing his foot or tapping his fingers, sometimes as chords to a guitar but other times just taptaptap.
Stopping What Is Stopping, or alternatively, HOW TO START EVEN IDK.
Getting/being increasingly SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE but just sitting there with a smile while internally going AAAAAAAAAAAAA in increasing volume, because you have no idea how to disengage.
Things not immediately in view or immediately important Cease To Exist Entirely.
Related, visual exhaustion aka I HAVE LIVED WITH THIS MESS SO LONG THAT THE MESS IS BACKGROUND NOISE AND DOES NOT EXIST TO ME, I NO LONGER SEE IT, IT IS SCENERY.
Is the only member of this family who can drink caffeine, ADHD cancels the effect out.
Actually Pretty Goddamn Smart, but the disconnect of not having any education after 5th grade and that GOOD GOOD RSD thanks to bitchy clients kicked in and he internalized that heâs dumb now oops, might as well not try. See Also That Good Good RSD RE: bitchy dates, guess heâs just A Terrible Date, whoops, gonna just Not do that anymore. Basically if enough people give him shit about a thing, guess heâs just NOT gonna do that thing anymore!! Yep!!!
Bad at doing things The Proper Way, procedures and rules and bureaucracy are BORING GOTTA GET STUFF DONE NOW MY WAY. Never showed his work in math ever.Â
Actually really smart, but got in trouble a lot for lack of visibly paying attention, being unable to sit still in class, and not following instructions. He could do the work and do it right, with or without listening to the lecture, but because he did it on his own terms and by his own rules, even if he got the right answer, he got in trouble. RSD convinced him later in life he was an idiot, but he still is really good at out of the box thinking and figuring shit out with limited information.
Gets Frustrated, Stops Doing Thing (or IMPULSIVITY ACTIVATE FORM OF DOING STUPID SHIT TO GET THING DONE)
Bad habit of WORRY when understimulated, also tendency towards insecurity, this is made WORSE x100 by his PTSD. Not to mention a bit of chronic low self esteem because of most of the above.
Low self esteem feeds into really bad self-awareness; he really doesnât quite understand or process the effects he has on people, for good or ill.
ADDICTIVE!! BEHAVIOR!!! (see: The Booze)
Stopping this here because a) you get my point by now and b) IâM going full ADHD on fixating on this post so Iâm cutting myself off here. Anyway, yeah. Thereâs this.

Steven Universe Podcast: Volume 2, Episode 3: Peridot
In the new season of the Steven Universe Podcast launched January 25, 2018, episode 3, released February 8, 2018, is about Peridot! The official description:
Why does Peridot call everyone a "clod?" Find out on this episode of the Steven Universe Podcast as creator Rebecca Sugar and former Executive Producer Ian Jones-Quartey return to discuss Peridot! Discover what inspired her design and personality traits, and how Rebecca's real life experiences shaped Peridot's development and storyline. Plus, Shelby Rabara, the voice of Peridot, and storyboard artist Amber Cragg join to share their favorite Peridot moments and episodes, and speculate on how Peridot is spending her free time away from the Gems! And Peridot herself answers some fan questions about best pets, earth fashion, and the Crystal Temps!
This is very long because the podcasts are getting long, and I donât want to skimp on the detail but I also donât want to overwhelm anyone with too much text. Therefore, I will open with bulleted highlights and include a more detailed narrative under the read-more.
Highlights:
Shelby Rabara thinks Peridot letting Steven and Amethyst help her in the episode âBack to the Kindergartenâ was a real turning point for her as an expression of trust.
Amber Cragg thinks Peridot is a fantastic âicebreakerâ character who is functioning these days as a Crystal Gems mascot.
Peridotâs free time on the weekends, according to Amber, would probably be occupied playing video games like Farmville and trying to make vlogs but failing to edit properly. Shelby thinks she does random art installations.
Peridotâs âclodâ catch phrases originated with Ian Jones-Quartey doing an alien impression in the writersâ room, combined with an interpretation of science bros being condescending about concepts like evolution when they could have easily been more gentle and welcoming.Â
âMarble Madnessâ combined story elements of discovering the Gemsâ pasts with the Gems themselves learning something new about the present.
Rebecca feels that Peridotâs evolution from being a Homeworld flunky to discovering what happens when the system does NOT work for someone is a very important aspect of her character.
Peridot truly believed Homeworldâs philosophy was good for everyone and was not shy about being cruel to those who defied it; Rebecca related this to her experience being a Jewish kid getting shamed for her assumed beliefs by people who honestly thought they were doing her a favor.
Do Gems emerge from the ground with their indoctrination to Homeworld already embedded, or is it taught to them through propaganda? Some of both.
Shelby Rabara, in character as Peridot, suggests the Crystal Tempsâ next adventure should involve baking an ube roll with Lars; that sheâd like to learn eating so she can make noises; that sheâd like to make vinyl pants that can have music embedded in them;Â and that dogs are the Best Earth Animal.
The detailed summary, including Shelby and Amber discussing Peridot's evolution, Rebecca and Ian discussing Peridotâs origin, and fan questions answered in character . . .
Read it all below!
McKenzie opens by asking storyboard artist Amber Cragg and Peridot's voice actor Shelby Rabara to discuss the episodes "Raising the Barn" and "Back to the Kindergarten." Shelby feels very in suspense when she watches new episodes because it's been so long between when she recorded and when she gets to see it. She loves when Peridot is so depressed lying in the bathroom, with that awful face Paul Villeco drew on her, and how she wants to bring her music to the kindergarten.
Shelby points out that Peridot lets her friends Amethyst and Steven cheer her up, and says it's an act of trust, which is a bit of a turning point for her. Even though Peridot ends up having an outburst and unloading, it's important to know that hope can sometimes come in the form of other people inspiring it in you.
Amber thinks an important aspect is Peridot's energy; she has a ton of it, and she can end up investing it in the wrong place. She was so careful with Lapis that she never wanted to say anything to rock the boat, and Lapis didn't talk back much, so neither really communicated, and it became a disaster of misunderstanding. But sometimes even if you invest energy into what ends up being a wasted effort, it's okay. You have to know when to move on. Amber mentions loving the scene that Katie drew looking at the sunflowers and riding in the train.
McKenzie clarifies that sometimes the issue is it being the wrong person you invest your time and effort into, and sometimes it's the wrong time. You can't fixate too much on ONE thing that has to be perfect or it's all over, or you could end up with nothing. She brings up Peridot's changing love for the Earth and its inhabitants, and asks what they think about that. Shelby thinks Peridot's love has developed partly because of how others there have treated her. Peridot's no longer just a "space Dorito"; she has empathy now. Amber says the Crystal Gems helped her find her roots, and now whether she likes it or not, Earth is home.
McKenzie leads into discussing Peridot's relationships and sense of self. Does Peridot put Amethyst down as defective as a way of increasing her own sense of self-worth? Amber says Peridot first noticed how all the Gems on Earth ignore the rules she's lived her life by forever, and how she's incensed by this at first, only to find she can develop her own personality through ignoring what she was told to be as well. Shelby runs through some interpretations of Peridot's perceptions of the other Gems, seeing Pearl as beneath her, Amethyst as cool despite her flaws, and Garnet as requiring compartmentalization. Shelby brings up Peridot's willingness to let the others show her who they are, and highlights the scene with Peridot being willing to try dancing with Garnet. (Her interpretation is that Peridot's response is to feel dirty and resolve never to try again.)Â
Still, the Crystal Gems being full of surprises parallels her experience with Earth itself. Peridot herself got to be a complete ham, take herself in whatever direction she wanted and be encouraged by the others. No one will ever stifle her attempts to grow. We can take the message home that we can change even if we're past childhood or adolescence; we can reinvent ourselves and still access support.
McKenzie asks what the other Gems may have learned from Peridot, and Amber says they may have been inspired to see someone new coming into the fold as someone who needed their guidance and help. Amber thinks Peridot almost functions as a mascot--as a source of energy and morale. Everyone loves her, and she's a great "icebreaker" character, inspiring the others to be less blocked in and cautious.
And for her last question to them, McKenzie brings up how Lamar and Rebecca suggested Garnet and Greg play tennis on the weekends; in that light, what do Amber and Shelby think Peridot does? Amber thinks she argues with people on the Internet and is a pro gamer on Farmville (handle: ClodFarmer3000). She probably also tries to make vlogs but can't edit. Maybe she's taking a class in Adobe After Effects. Shelby thinks she does random art installations. Maybe blending in with a tree, not blinking. Or trying to be a mannequin in a clothing store. Or eating french fries and messing with people using her metal powers. She wouldn't let anyone in during her art creation process.
Ian and Rebecca talk origins and concepts:
Peridot was conceived pretty early on. Ian used to bust out with an alien impression in the writers' room, with generic not-understanding-humans statements, and he really wanted to put a similar alien in the show.Â
The origin of Peridot's favorite word "clod" began with Rebecca and Ian watching the Cosmos remake, which sort of makes you fall in love with science--but then there's another side of it, with people who get mad at religion and are angry with those who don't understand evolution. Ian would do a voice of a "frustrated liberal": "But the Earth was created in seven days!" "No it wasn't, you CLOD." "Evolution is real, CLOD!" They point out that evolution is such a beautiful concept, but some of its proponents want to win you to their side by being mean about it. They believe more in being gentle.
They connected this with Peridot eventually, first starting with Elle Michalka wanting to include a Gem named Peridot combined with Rebecca's inkling that she wanted to handle Steven getting cyberbullied on the show. That didn't exactly come to fruition, but the idea of the person doing it--harassing someone and threatening someone from far away--became Peridot. This worked well with their desire to include discovery of the Gems' pasts and mix that with them learning something new about the present. Rebecca loved the episode "Marble Madness" because they'd written everything referenced in that episode to all be tied in together, dependent on information that had been revealed carefully in previous episodes.
Rebecca enjoyed bringing Peridot in as an example of a Gem who really toes the line and buys Homeworld propaganda; she relates it to her experience growing up Jewish and having other kids tell her they know she's categorically wrong about all of reality based on what box they believed she belonged in. The kids were never shy about telling her what punishment awaited people who don't pick the right religion, and honestly believed they're helping her out by saying these things; Peridot is similar, having never met a Gem for whom the order of the Diamonds was not beneficial, and she is not worried about whether the Crystal Gems' feelings will be hurt if she says so.Â
Rebecca says Peridot may seem conceited, but she isn't; she knows she's a grunt, a maintenance worker, and is only proud because she knows her place. She believes the others she's meeting are just as not-special as she is, but then she comes to find out there are Gems who were failed by the system, and that changes her outlook. Always before, she thought the Homeworld philosophy really was the best for everyone, but when she finds out it isn't, she also realizes she herself is outside the system. You have to change your thinking when you learn the way things are is bad for some people.
McKenzie then asks about Gem indoctrination; do they pop out of the ground with these beliefs intact, or is it drilled into them? Ian acknowledges this is a big question about the nature of Gems, and they agree it's some of both. Peridot, as a maintenance worker, didn't think about questioning the system because she was just too busy working within it, going to a bunch of different places and learning about them, and also unknowingly absorbing revised history created to edit out what made Homeworld look unsuccessful or imperfect.
Peridot answers questions:
Peridot perks up at the mention of questions sent through Twitter and demonstrates recognition of the medium, and claims she has only taken over the CN Twitter when she's had PERMISSION.
McKenzie: I've heard rumors that you forcibly took over Cartoon Network's social media channels?
Peridot: I wouldn't call it forcibly. I basically did it because I felt like it, but who needs permission these days? I'm Peridot, hello.
McKenzie: That's fair. You are the #1 cartoon character according to that post.
Peridot: Did you see Shelby Rabara congratulated me? I got to talk to SHELBY RABARA. Oh my god. I don't think she knew that I self-proclaimed that I was the #1 cartoon character.
McKenzie: Would you ever consider leading another adventure as the Crystal Temps?
Peridot: I love being the Crystal Temps. I mean, everybody knows that I am The Garnet, the best one. I'm not as good as THE Garnet, but I think Lapis and Connie and myself, I think we would be really really great at baking cakes, specifically ube cakes with Lars.
McKenzie: Interesting! So would Pumpkin accompany you on that one, or would Lars take the place of Pearl?
Peridot: Oh no, Pumpkin definitely would be by my side, who's gonna lick up the extra ube cake when it--I don't wash floors, that's what Pearls do.
McKenzie: Speaking of food, if you could eat anything, what would you want to try first? Cookie Cats, Fry Bits, or something else?
Peridot: I would definitely try fry bits, because there's something about the oil bubbling really violently that makes it really really neat to watch. And apparently when I watch Steven eat the fry bits, he makes this loud noise, so I'm interested in how many loud noises I can make all at the same time.
McKenzie: What is objectively the best Earth pet? There's dogs, cats, hamsters, are you familiar with those?
Peridot: What is the difference between a hamster and--cats?
McKenzie: Cats are larger and they would probably eat a hamster.
Peridot: Oh my god, they eat a hamster? Cats eat hamsters?
McKenzie: They eat mice, which are related to hamsters I'm pretty sure.
Peridot: I ate a Cookie Cat. Was I eating a real cat?
McKenzie: That is a separate thing.
Peridot: Are dogs loyal?
McKenzie: They are. That is their main feature.
Peridot: Okay. Well, Pumpkin is super loyal to me, so if Pumpkin's anything like an Earth dog, I would have to say my final answer would be the best Earth pet is a dog, if it's remotely anywhere near Pumpkin.
McKenzie: What is a piece of Earth fashion that you've always wanted to try on?
Peridot: Is there something called vinyl on Earth? I would like to try on some vinyl pants. Very shiny. I don't know if they're easy to walk in, but something about the vinyl, the scratchy sound it makes. Don't Earth people put music on vinyl? Or am I getting that mixed up with the round thing?
McKenzie: Yeah, they're both called vinyl. They're not on the pants. There's no music in the pants.
Peridot: There should be music in the pants.
McKenzie: Maybe that should be the next step.
Peridot: Is that something that I can contribute to Earth? Making vinyl music pants that can play music while you walk?
McKenzie: I think that that's definitely something you should look into.
Peridot: Peridot, Peridot, Peridot, Peridot is going to own vinyl music pants!
McKenzie: I look forward to getting a pair.
Peridot: Me too. Me too. Me too McKenzie.
McKenzie: What is your favorite part about being a farmer?
Peridot: It is just so amazing to have my hands in the dirt. I love the smell of dirt, I love those white little rock thingies that supposedly help with water drainage. I really enjoy that something like soil has striations in it, just like rock. You have to put the bottom layer with rocks and you have to put some mulch on top, and then on top of that more dirt, and more rocks on top. So there is definitely a way to create soil that has good drainage, has all the yummy stuff for all these flowers and fruits and vegetables to grow in. So I really do believe being a farmer is something that is just ingrained in me.
McKenzie: You take it seriously.
Peridot: I take it very seriously. I am mulching every other day McKenzie. I am getting bags of mulch. Pumpkin likes to eat the mulch, and that's a problem.
McKenzie: If you had a podcast, what would you make yours about?
Peridot: This is a great question. I'm gonna need a moment. Now, what we're doing right now, a podcast, where people listen to us in our podcast, would I be able to have guests come on my podcast?
McKenzie: You can have guests on the podcast.
Peridot: I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers one time. Steven was watching it, so I got to watch it as well. And other than Camp Pining Hearts, that's still my number one show. Mr. Rogers has all these people come on the show and talk about how they make things, like mozzarella cheese. One time this man came on the show and showed how they made mozzarella cheese, and stretched it with their hands and put it in the water after molding it into little balls. I would really like to have maybe the inventor of yellow Post-It sticky pads. I would just wanna know people's thought processes? Like, what makes that glue on the top of the Post-It note? How does a microphone work? Who invented the button? I don't have any buttons on my clothes, obviously, but Steven one time wore a polo shirt with a button. And I was fixated with this little tiny round thing with four holes. I would like to know who made that button. Who are the great minds behind Earthling things?
McKenzie: Buttons have probably been around for a while. I don't know that the person who made buttons is still with us, if you know what I'm getting at.
Peridot: Oh that's a shame.
McKenzie: But I think that the mozzarella cheese thing sounds great!
Peridot: Where do people go?
McKenzie: Um....
Peridot: Is that for the next podcast?
McKenzie: Yeah we'll talk about that next time.
Peridot: Okay.
An episode about Pearl is next week!

hey! first of all: congratulations on your art, i just found your blog and it's already one of my favourites, oh my god, everything is just stunning! second: i'm sorry if someone asked this before, but i didn't find it in your ask tags; you said you are mostly self-taught, and i wondered: where did you start? do you have any advice for someone who is just beginning to teach themselves how to draw? thanks ^^
I started the wrong way, which is why is took me so long to improve. I would draw without direction, a few times a year, and had convinced myself that I didnât need the basics, that my âintuitionâ (ahem) and âtalentâ (AHEM) were all I needed to improve over time.Â
I only started improving once I realised that the first was inconsistent, and the second was nonexistent.
From my experience, learning to draw is done in two ways: through theory and through practice. The two go hand in hand, and ignoring either one slows improvement.Â
Theory is easy to disregard, but doing so is harmful in the long term. Behind every masterpiece is knowledge, not magic. This knowledge comes through studying the fundamentals: form, light, perspective, proportion and composition, extending to anatomy, colour and movement. Itâs learning to understand what youâre drawing, and how to communicate it, without even picking up a pencil.
Practice is exactly what you think it is: drawing, in all forms. Whether youâre doing studies, or sketches, or creating finished pieces, itâs applying those fundamentals in order to create⌠Sometimes itâs finding those fundamentals through your mistakes. As much as I like to stress the technical side of drawing, intuition has a part to play too, and can lead you to learning, whether you realise it or not.
For the record, you donât need fundamentals to draw. And you donât need to draw to understand fundamentals. But only by combining the two will you acquire the tools needed to properly communicate whatever drawing is in your head.
As for smaller pieces of adviceâŚ
Be patient and consistent. You can learn so many wonderful things by listening to an art talk once a day, or spending fifteen minutes every morning sketching. You canât learn everything at once, nor do you need to. Just make sure that youâre feeding your skills a little bit each day.Â
Even small pieces of information can drastically change your art. Simple things, like learning to use a cool light when using a warm shadow, what rim light is, that there are three joints in the finger, the rule of thirds ⌠Take, what, a minute each to learn? I mean, the day I spent 20 minutes watching a video on colour theory, changed my art forever. Those minutes all add up, and are all small victories.
Whatâs also really helped me, and which is often overlooked, is indulging the philosophy behind art. Iâve watched just as many tutorials on proportion and anatomy, as Iâve listened to podcasts on inspiration and artist health. Thinking about art and moulding your mindset to suit whatever it is youâre working towards is crucial to being a happy artist.
Feed off of creative media: other artistsâ work, books, film, video games, music⌠Iâve always believed that art has its own energy to be used and shared. Allow yourself to find it in other peopleâs creations and to give some back whenever you can.
Lastly, donât be afraid to just draw. Draw as much as you can, even if itâs only a little, and no matter how bad you think it is. Itâs all mileage, so it all has value.
(Iâve left some resources under the cut, that Iâve referred to in the past and continue to use. Long story short, the internet is your best friend.)
Good luck with everything! I wish you all the best âĽ
Most of what Iâve learned has indeed come from the internet (no surprise there). Art books are wonderful, but expensive -and with the internet at your fingertips, Iâd argue that you donât even need them.Â
There are a few Youtube channels which are absolute goldmines for any budding artists (links included below).Â
Sycra would be my top pick, as he covers a lot of the fundamentals and is a real joy to listen to. To start, I would recommend his videos on Fundamentals, Art Advice for beginners, Iterative Drawing and Artistâs Block.
There are a few other channels I love too.
Istebrak has some great content for digital painters, although much of what she teaches can be applied to other forms of drawing. Iâd recommend her videos on Line Art, âWhy Your Drawings Suckâ and Masterpieces. Her channel is set up in a way that she teaches different things as she goes, through a class-like system, and every video can teach you something new.Â
Iâll also add the channels of Ahmed Aldoori, Marc Brunet and Proko to the list.

RADLEY âMOUTHâ WALSH. college sophomore; nineteen. israel broussard. OPEN.
and, as randy meeks once said:
âThere's always some stupid bullshit reason to kill your girlfriend. That's the beauty of it all! Simplicity! Besides, if it gets too complicated, you lose your target audience.â
BEFORE THE PARTY;
No one knew movies better than Radley Walsh. That was just a fact. He lived and breathed films, his references pulled from nearly every genre imaginable. But what was his favorite movies? That would be horror films. From Halloween to Happy Death Day, he couldnât get enough of the genre that made Carpenter, Craven and Romero household names. There was no greater thrill than being on the edge of your seat as you watch someone try to outmaneuver some killer. His love for horror had come from an early age, thanks to a neglectful babysitter who let him stay up a late enough to catch an airing of âThe Shiningâ on AMC. From that moment on, he was hooked. While children his age would walk into the local BlockBuster for their pick of the Disney movie of the week, not Radley Walsh. He was the kid with a stack of Friday, the 13th films under his arm much to the chagrin of his younger brother, Miles.
His move for films lead for this need to create his own. It wasnât like he didnât already have the guidebook. So he cracked open his piggy bank, bought the cheapest camera he could and from then on, directing had been his passion. In fact, he had gotten into Rosewood Academy on a scholarship due to one of his films. His shaky found footage horror film set on Mars was probably met with several raised eyebrows but they clearly couldnât deny that he had raw talent. The way Radley saw it, they were investing on greatness because he would bring the world itâs next âPsychoâ or âScreamâ. But not before he tackled a horror that everyone had to face on face first. Adolescence. He would capture the highs and often lows of his teenage years for the entertainment of strangers on the internet. âHall Passâ had, of course gone viral and much of that success was due to the dicks that lived in Rosewood.Â
Unlike his older brother, Braxton â Radley wasnât practically well liked around town. He didnât walk into rooms and everyone stop in awe, no. When he walked into rooms, people groaned in annoyance. He was very much the town spaz and he was proud of it. If being a spaz was being passionate about the things that he enjoyed, then he was the biggest spaz around. But when they found themselves hunted by some maniac in a mask, theyâll be the ones regretting having ignored his sacred rules to surviving a chase scene. You pair his spaziness with the fact that he was recording the lives of most of Rosewood for the internet to see, you could probably tell why it was that people werenât fond of him. But that didnât apply to everyone, not at all.Â
Due to the sensation that was âHall Passâ, heâd gotten himself a bit of a cult following. He wouldnât say that he was king of the weirdos, that title probably belonged to Jamie Geary for his dope podcast or October Addams for just being weird but he also wouldnât say that he wasnât up there alongside them? He gave those with interests that differed from what the usual football games or dances and balls of the week something new. They could always turn to his videos for his commentary on all of the stupid shit going on in their lives. Sometimes that was all someone needed to get them through the hellhole that was their hometown.
Despite his new found coolness with the anti cool kids, there was one person who still thought of him as a massive dork. His friend? Serena Stein. He didnât quite know what they were, because heâd assume they were friends but Serena would just trash him at whatever opportunity she got. But let anyone else attempt to do that, she would literally have their head on a spike if she could. It was odd, to say the least but he didnât have a problem with odd. He enjoyed oddness, itâs where he thrived. Where he didnât? Girls. It was evident in his relationships, or lack thereof with the opposite sex. Either, he was entirely off and a girl simply wasnât into him as was the case with his friend Scout Prescott or in Serenaâs case, he just didnât know what her opinion of him was. Was she into him? Was she not? Was this all in his head? Romance to Radley was truly an M. Night Shyamalan film. Well one of his worse ones, at least because The Sixth Sense? Legendary.
So Serena and himself stuck to what they were good at. Making fun of one another. Itâd been that way since they met that fateful day in detention. You could say it was mutual dislike at first sight, dislike that had kept them together past plenty but he feared that their days were probably numbered.Â
Radley was a Walsh. To many that meant nothing, his family was nothing special around Rosewood. They didnât build a new wing for the Academy nor did they raise the funds to save some Falconâs nest in the townâs park. They were just your average family and average appeared to have no place in Rosewood anymore. Why? Because SoWood was coming to Rosewood. SoWood being the gentrification of the other side of the tracks, the working class of Rosewood. It appeared that the affluent side of Rosewood was growing sick of sharing their spaces and since they couldnât Purge them out of their neighborhood, they would resort to raise the price of living. Â
It was a horror movie, but this time itâd come to life. One by one, his neighbors were getting knocked off by this prevalent force that was unrelenting. Until they were the last ones standing, the literal Last House on the Left. But unlike all of those kick ass final girls in those last acts, he wasnât sure that the Walshâs would be able to out run this killer. They had tried their hardest to stay afloat but even with their combined efforts, things seemed dire for them.Â
Never once did Radley Walsh expect himself to mourn at the thought of being ousted from Rosewood. But Radley did see the positives in the Walshâs current situation. He could do whatever he wanted, he would soon be gone.  So if Rosewood wanted to free themselves of the Walshâs, he was going to give them a swan song they wonât soon forget.Â
DURING THE PARTY;
What a night.Â
That was the only way that he could describe the evening heâd just had. Only in Rosewood could someone go home, expecting to have a quiet night in with a Halloween marathon and of course, his siblings when he suddenly found himself thrown into some game put together by the townâs recluse. A game that if his friends and himself passed would give him a map to find treasure.Â
He could not make this up even if he wanted too. He watched on amazement of what his life had just become. The entire evening was like one of those great coming of age movies from the 80â˛s but if itâd come to the year 2017 and had a lot more stakes involved. This wasnât walking down some train tracks in search of a dead body nor was it hiding from alien from the government. No, this was fighting for cash. Cash that the Walshâs desperately needed.
And in the last act, the win came from the most unlikely of sources. The asshole that was trying to kick them out of their home. A twist he definitely didnât see coming. Heâd left One Eyed Willyâs home inspired, ready to put what happened that evening down on paper. This would make for an amazing movie one day.
As he stepped out of the home, his phone began to vibrate in his pocket. He picked it up without second thought, it was probably his mother wanting to know what he was up too. He was the âproblematicâ child after all. But it wasnât his mother, but someone with an obvious voice changing app asking him what his favorite scary movie was.
How original.
alternate faceclaims and prompts.

Seaweed, DMCA & Transformers
Professor and DJ are back to talk about billion-year-old seaweed found in China. This seaweed is older than the combined ages of all our listeners, but doesn't complain when you say "OK Boomer". It also has no thoughts on how you should live your life. Not many thoughts on anything, really, it's extinct. Professor summarises the development of life to DJ, but since DJ is a robot, he just doesn't get it.
Activision are trying some legal tactics to close some leaks while ignoring their own incompetence revealing the new Warzone game mode to the world without the efforts of a leaker. Are they just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic: Modern Zombies Ops 8?
This week it's DJ's turn to rant about a missing voice actor. #NOTMYOPTIMUS. A new Transformers series without Michael Bay is in the works from the same people who made the recent Godzilla anime trilogy. Who joins the ranks of the NA wall of wasted cast?
Of course, the Nerds talk about games and have some remembrances for some big names this week, Katherine Johnson and Kazuhisa Hashimoto.
Stay healthy, and we'll be back next week.

Katherine Johnson, an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. During her 35-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist." Johnson's work included calculating trajectories, launch windows and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the ApolloLunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson as a lead character in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. In 2019, Johnson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Johnson died at a retirement home in Newport News, at age 101. Hashimoto is best known for inventing the â â â â â â â â B A hack found in multiple video games that has become a geek touchstone in the gaming community. The cheat code gives you different perks, depending on the game. Hashimoto had inadvertently created it while bringing the arcade version of Gradius to the NES in 1986. Hashimoto knew the arcade version of the game was hard and he would likely not finish it, so he added a sequence of button presses that he could easily remember that gave the ship he controlled in the game the full range of power-ups so that he could easily complete the game for in-house testing purposes. He had intended to remove the programming code for that sequence before the game was shipped, but the game had shipped with the code included. Since then, the Konami code is not only used across other video games from other developers and publishers in similar manners, but as Easter eggs in other forms of media. His death reported by both Konami and by Hashimoto's friend Yuji Takenouchi , a composer and video game sound designer, who tweeted that the code creator died.

After four attempts, Bill Hatfield has become the oldest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world. The 81-year-old completed his eight-month journey on Saturday morning, sailing into The Spit on the Gold Coast in his 38-foot yacht L'Eau Commotion. The former fisherman from Bundaberg said he'd been dreaming of this achievement since he was seven years old. Mr Hatfield said he lived on strict rations while at sea. "For fresh water I had a desalinator that pumps through a membrane, and my daily diet was a third of a tin of beans, a tin of tuna, 100 grams of rice and flour and oats, and 150 grams of milk powder." The achievement is all the more impressive considering he sailed west, battling against the prevailing winds and currents.

Hughes, a self-styled daredevil, flat-Earth theorist and limousine-jumping stuntman, died Saturday when his crudely built contraption propelled him on a column of steam, spiraled through the air and cratered into the sagebrush. The rocketâs green parachute tore away moments after takeoff, sending the crowd of 50 or so people into a panic. In March 2018, Mr Hughes propelled himself almost 600m into the air before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert. After professing his belief in a flat Earth later that year, Hughes gained support within the flat-Earth community. His post-flat-Earth fundraising campaign made its $7,875 goal. He had said he intended to make multiple rocket journeys, culminating in a flight to outer space, where he believed he would be able to take a picture of the entire Earth as a flat disc. He died in Barstow, California at the age of 64.

5 Highly Actionable Steps to Make REAL Progress Towards Your Investing Goals
BiggerPockets.comis an amazing learning resource for real estate investors. Thats why most of us are here. But like all great resources on the internet, it comes with a big challenge. There is so much great information that it can become overwhelming. This article is about simplifying your learning experience, getting more clear and confident, and making real progress towards your investing goals. Im going to give you 5 specific strategies that you can use alone or in combination. Lets get started. 5 Steps to Make REAL Progress Towards Your Investing Goals1. Answer the question: Why are you here? Have you ever watched that awesome TED talk Start With Why? Everything great starts with why. Awesome companies. World changing movements. Inspiring leaders. Your real estate investing career is no different. Your why gives you perspective on the what and the how of real estate. Exploring why also helps you focus. It helps you simplify the information you take in because you will be attracted to some information and ignore other information. So, why are you here? Why do you read articles, listen to podcasts, and interact on the Forums at BP? Do you hope to buy your first rental property? Do you hope to start a business fixing and flipping houses?Do you want to be a deal finder as a wholesaler or an agent?Or do you not know exactly why youre here? Are you still trying to figure it out? Any of those answers is reasonable. But take some time to explore your own motivations before you dig into the next set of articles or podcasts. Focus on the short-term, like your why in the next 6-12 months. Related: Stop Dreaming & Start Doing: How to Turn Big Real Estate Goals Into Actionable Steps If you have trouble with this, try asking the opposite question. What are you NOT here for? Choosing what to exclude may be just as useful as choosing what to focus on. 2. Figure out your main study topics (exclude the rest). Once you get a little more clarity on your why youll be able to focus more on specific topics taught here on BiggerPockets.com. For example, lets say your why or objective is to buy your first rental property. Here are the topics that I would recommend you study: Getting started fixing and flipping, wholesaling, becoming an agent, owning notes, or investing commercially each has its own unique (but similar) core topics. In another article, I wrote about The 7 Must-Read Real Estate Books For Beginning Investors, and I called these topics the 101 classes of your real estate self education. Unlike a real university, YOU decide the teachers and the curriculum for your 101 classes. So choose carefully! This is one of the main reasons for information overload. Without a why and without an idea of what topics you should focus on, you tend to drift about from one eye-catching headline to another. Trust me, there are plenty of talented authors and knowledgeable experts who are more than happy for you to read their stuff. And most of it is pretty good. BUT it doesnt matter how interesting or good it is. What matters is does it move you forward toward your objective? So, I recommend actually writing down an education plan, just like you would for any other important project. Pick the most important topics and use them to choose what you learn and what you ignore. If you are so new or overwhelmed that you dont know the most important topics or even the questions to ask, do one of the following: Leave a comment at the bottom of this article sharing your objective (your why), and I will be happy to do my best to help you explore the topics you should focus on.Post a question in the Forums, either in the New Member Introduction Area or in the specific forum that matches your why or objective (like rental properties, wholesaling, flipping, etc.). BP is known for the knowledgeable people who are willing to help. Related: 5 Daily Habits to Help You Steadily Reach Your Entrepreneurial Goals 3. Use BiggerPockets tools to help you focus. Now that youre more clear on why youre here and now that you have a list of topics to study, use technology as your friend to help you focus. Here are some of the best BP tools (feel free to comment below if I left some out): BP Search: If you havent used it before, the BP search box is here:
You can search for any of the topics youve chosen in step #2. The more specific you get, the better. Below is an example of the search results you would get if one of yourtopics was house hacking duplex. There are 957 forum posts and 5 blog posts related to just this one topic!
You can also click on filter results in order to narrow your results by most recent, by author, or by other criteria. This is a great way to find forum topics, blog posts, and podcasts that are relevant to you. Subscribe to Forums The forums are probably the richest resource on BP because you can find discussions on just about any topic. But theyre also HUGE and cover more than you need to focus on. So use the subscribe to forum tool. This allows you to just get notices on your BP Dashboard from the forums that are relevant to your education needs. Subscribing to the BiggerPockets Forums is simple. Visit the Forums Categories Page.Click on a forum that you want to follow.Click on the subscribe to forum box (like picture below).
4. Now every time you check into BP, you can view your Subscribed Forum tab on the main forum page to get a list of all conversations and topics youre interested in.
Keyword Alerts This is a very handy tool. You can choose words that you want to follow anywhere on the BiggerPockets.com Forums and Marketplace. Here is a keyword video tutorial (my favoritepart is Brandon Turner and his cat), and here is a written, step-by-step guide. To set up your keyword alerts, go here. People use these alerts for finding deals in their market and connecting with other members. But its also very useful for learning about specific topics. Go back to your topic list, figure out the most urgent ones to learn, and add them to your keyword alerts. Now youll be notified anytime a conversation occurs about that topic in the Forums. Its nice to jump on topics quickly because then you can ask questions or offer your own experience to the topic. These conversations are a great way to learn. 4. Go deep with the right experts (ignore the rest). Now you know why youre on BP and what you want to study, and youve used the BP tools to focus your information intake. But its still possible to focus your learning even more. Of all the blog authors and forum experts on BP, some of them will resonate with you more than others. Maybe its because they have a similar story to yours. Or maybe you just think theyre funny (its hard not to laugh reading a Ben Leybovich article). Whatever the reason, find a few people you respect on BP who cover your topics, and go deep with their content. Read all of their blog articles, new and old. Read all of their forum posts. Ask them questions in the comments and forum posts. Use the follow tool to keep up with them on BP. Part of learning is studying specific information. But another part of learning is just absorbing successful peoples approach to business and life. The more you observe what they say and do, the more youll pick up. Famous personal development teacher Jim Rohn once said: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. The community of BP is great because you can choose to spend time with whomever you want, and this can average up your real estate game in the process. I also like to find out who the experts I respect study. What authors do they like? What books do they read? What courses have they taken? For example, I love reading everything about Warren Buffett I can get my hands on. But who did he learn from? How did he improve himself to get where he is today? One of his biggest influences was Benjamin Graham. As a result, I have read and enjoyed Grahams book The Intelligent Investor. 5. Schedule offline learning time. As much as I love the internet for its wealth of free information and the ability to connect with people from all over the world, it does have its downsides. For me personally, the downside is just the amount of distractions and diversions any online reading can bring. One minute youre reading about rental leases, and the next moment youre on ESPN.com reading about the Clemson Tigers chance at a football national championship. What?! By the way, my Clemson Tigers do have a good chance this year! [Editors note: Go Tar Heels!] But back to our REAL topic. I like to take my learning offline from time to time. I do this in a few ways: Turn off alerts on my cell phoneRead printed books(I know, thats old school)Print articles (even MORE old school)Attend classes or networking events in person Maybe Im the only one, but I still learn best in a quiet room, in a comfortable chair, with my penand a book or printed article. Not only do you learn this way, but your mind also has space to make creative connections between ideas. Using your brain to THINK is just as important in learning as absorbing information. Sometimes this time to think gets lost in our manic obsession to absorb more information. So take time offline to get quiet, read, journal, and just absorb all of the information youve been learning. Educate Yourself in Motion I hope the 5 strategies Ive shared will be helpful for you. Feel free to take what works for you, and discard the rest. But no matter what, I hope youll combine all of the information youre learning on BiggerPockets.com and other places with a healthy dose of hustle. You have to get in motion. You have to apply what you learn, even if you fail and fall flat on your face. Once you get in motion, youll have more context and challenges that will take your education even deeper. This is where the real learning happens. Best of luck to you with your learning and with your real estate investing! We are republishing this article to help out our newer readers.
How do you keep up with all of the real estate information you learn? Have you used any of the 5 strategies Ive suggested? Do you have anything different to suggest? Id love to hear from you in the comments below. https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2015/12/17/actionable-steps-reach-investing-goals/

9 Steps to Creating a Magnetic Blog
Itâs not surprising that you decided to dedicate yourself to work in the world of web. Perhaps youâve seen lots of websites that get an enormous amount of traffic every single day. The owners of these web resources become popular, they earn solid money, and they are happy with the life.
You might think a kind of âI have a great idea/service/product to spread around the globe sitting in a comfortable officeâ business idea. Yes, you think in a right direction. The internet is a wonderful place to start your business. However, it is not as easy as it seems.
While you could be a skillful businessman outside the internet, it doesnât mean you can get credit in the digital world. Here you will have to face a bunch of new rules; new personal findings and, of course, barriers you will have to overcome. Here you will have to become a professional internet marketer.
Letâs presume youâve already launched a website. You believe it will generate some traffic. Unfortunately, the only thing you can see â your website brings you zero results: you donât have any traffic, you donât get new customers, your brand gets no visibility and, moreover, you spend all your time in vain.
Itâs a kind of disaster, isnât it?
Let me present you 9 steps to creating a magnetic blog that will attract dozens of visitors and bring you money.
 1. Know your niche and your audience
Yeah, a statement âknow your niche and your audienceâ might sound weird for you as youâve just entered upon the path of internet marketing but it is not as strange as you think. I am sure you know what âa chain reactionâ means. Right â it is a sequence of reactions where a reactive product or by-product causes additional reactions to take place. The same happens to your online activity. You just get in touch with your target audience, introduce them your product, and, afterwards, this audience will share it via all possible social media accounts (of course, if your product worth it). Why is it a chain reaction? Because you have to do a single âstovepipingâ and your service users will do the rest instead of you.
Nevertheless, I havenât given you any idea on how to find your target audience. Well, first things first. Determine your niche. It is easy to do because you, as a businessman, already know what kind of product/service youâre going to offer. Letâs take, for example, musical instruments. You are the one who has just released a new guitar brand and, of course, you want to get customers online.
Finally, youâve determined your niche and it is time to investigate where to find potential clients for your awesome guitars. What Google says:
As you can see, Google reveals you TOP 10 websites that sell guitars and other musical equipment. These websites are the source of your customers you could gain.
Once youâve found the places where your target audience âdwellsâ, it is time to know better your competitors.
 2. Know your competitors â they can teach you a lot.
Believe or not but your competitors can give you a lot of things. As Iâve showed you above â it is not too hard to find out who your competitors are via Google. BUT in this very case you should ask Google about blogs that are dedicated to music instruments:
Please pay attention to an inquiry youâre using during the search. I didnât want to do an in-depth keyword research, I just put the first that came to my mind âmusic instruments blogâ and Google suggested me a few solid blogs. I want to underline an adjective âsolidâ because Iâve checked the DR of each blog and Organic Traffic they get via Ahrefs Site Explorer:
69K of traffic â it is really impressive. And do you know what do these numbers mean? It means this blog is the place where you could find a way lot of potential clients for your own music brand.
Why do I say âcompetitors can teach you a lotâ? Because, thanks to discovering your competitorsâ blogs, you have a great opportunity to see what they offer to their target audience:
What type of content they post?
Do they add video tutorials to the blog or not?
Do they pay attention to spreading the information via social media?
I donât say that you should do all the same as your competitors do. But, please, take into account that these websites established themselves as the leaders being a part of TOP 10 Google results. Thus you can get lots of useful information spying these web resources.
 3. Take care of your brand visibility
Despite the fact that your service is awesome as hell, you wonât scale up your customer database massively without the right brand visibility. Yeah, sometimes it is easier to say than to do. And the very first step you should do is to tell about yourself.
I am not familiar with psychological aspects of our society but the practice shows: if people donât know your story, your background, they wonât be interested in the service youâre willing to sell them.
Why is it so important? Just because I believe everyone wants to trust to someone he or she already knows. No, it is not about personal relationships. It is about your âtransparencyâ as a businessman. Here are a few suggestions you should follow branding yourself:
Donât be shy about sharing your life story. Tell us about yourself, as if you were talking to a friend.
Point out how your product or service can help your users to solve their problems
Share your story via social media accounts.
When you talk about your service, you should never be arrogant. Remember, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar
 4. Create a social media presenceÂ
I could combine this tip with the one above because a social media presence is a part of your brand visibility. However, I decided to talk about it in detail. I bet you wonât argue with me that creating accounts throughout such social media resources as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest is not a hard task. Yes, it will take some of your time but doing a good job these social media accounts will help you spread the information about your brandâs activity.
Itâs a very slippery slope when marketers tend to self-promote instead of engaging more and more users to get familiar with the service itself. If you want to see that your social media efforts arenât in vain, you should do the following:
Refresh the information on your social media accounts daily.
Never ignore comments people post.
Always reply to usersâ questions.
Share the information related to your niche but donât be persistent with self-promotion.
Use various methods of catching usersâ eye: post videos, images, infographics. Make sure your content is interesting.
Use Twitter as a great place to find new connections and take a part in various conversations.
Use Instagram as the platform for posting innovations in terms of your service. Donât forget to be closer to your users by posting some shots from your daily routine.
 5. Be a guest contributor
Guest posting is an excellent way to get credibility for yourself as a marketer and, of course, to make your brand popular.Â
If you want to get visibility for your own blog, you should âfan a sparkâ on other blogs as the writer.
What will it give you?
Firstly, you will get credit as a writer and as a professional marketer. Moreover, you will increase traffic to your site earning backlinks.
Another one cool thing that guest posting allows you to do is create business relationships with influential people from your niche. My personal experience is a great example of this. When I started writing my first articles I had neither followers on Twitter, nor business contacts on LinkedIn. Likely, my guest contributions on marketing blogs with DR starts from 40-63 helped me get useful business connections (no more, no less):
Yeah, the situation with followers on Twitter is not impressive. Nevertheless, for me (who has recently started writing guest posts) it is a good result. Likely, my contacts on LinkedIn are far better in contrast to Twitter:
340 business contacts â not bad result for a person in this industry for only a year (I started guest posting 4 months ago though).
Guest posting has only benefits for you and your blog. The only drawback you might face is absence of time. Fortunately, you will be able to overcome this âtroubleâ improving your writing skills.
 6. Content is king â donât forget about it!
Do you remember this statement âMaster of information, master of situation?â Any kind of information is like a weapon you can use for your own benefit. But why does every marketer on the web know a rock-solid truth âcontent is king?â Simply because content gives users answers to their questions.
Once I stumbled upon an interesting survey the Content Marketing Institute created. It states that 80% of businessmen prefer to get  general information about some brand via reading a few articles, compared to an ad. And, 78% of consumers believe that those companies that provide high-quality content build better business relationships with them. However, 58% still think that those companies that produce video content are more trustworthy.
Truth be told, it doesnât matter what kind of content you are going to present your audience. There are lots of blogs that win the game providing their users only with articles. There are blogs that like to mix their content up â they produce articles, videos, and even, launch podcasts.
By the way, if you want to get some new valuable insights on content marketing, you should check out what the founder of the Content Marketing Institute Joe Pulizzi says.
 7. Optimize your blog
Every marketer who runs a blog optimizes it in a proper way. SEO is an integral part of internet marketing. You wonât get any traffic without an optimized website. I wonât provide you with a detailed SEO course over here (there are lots of guides in the internet) but I just want you to understand the basic aspect of it.
I could say for a lark âeverything revolves around contentâ but I am sure it is more like an unquestionable fact rather than joke! Content is KING! Thus, never neglect of creating only high-quality and unique material.
Talking about written content, you should always focus on using right keywords that will help your content get ranked well in Google. It goes without saying that using only âtext typeâ content makes your blog very boring. Thus, donât forget to add images, videos, infographics, etc., on your blog. These visual additions will make your blog interesting and desirable to visit. Nevertheless, even though you will have to take care of adding an optimized description, alt tags, and, as Iâve already mentioned, related keywords. Without all these SEO âpreparationsâ your blog will be invisible for Google first page.
Please, donât neglect SEO!
 8. Mobile accessibility is important as well
Wow, I thought this tip is self-evident just because you might be read this post using your mobile device.
Taking things more seriously, mobile optimization of a website is vitally important. Especially in the age of tech progress. Let me introduce you just a few reasons why you must have a mobile optimized website:
User experience. Firstly, mobile users want to get the information (or to purchase a product) very fast. If your website is inconvenient for mobile users, you lose out on thousands of potential customers. Additionally, mobile optimized websites lead to positive feedbacks from users.
Traffic. I donât know a single person who doesnât use a mobile phone for surfing the web. Maybe you do? Well, you got a clue that mobile users are a great source of traffic for your website.
Bounce rate. If your web resource isnât mobile optimized, your bounce rate is going to be very high. If you want to reduce it, a mobile optimization is a must-do.
Brand engagement. Did you know that users who have been satisfied with your websiteâs mobile experience will likely return to your site on desktop afterwards? Yes, it is true. Thus, your brand engagement increases its popularity. However, just imagine if your visitors are not satisfied with a mobile version of your website, whatâs next? Right, they will choose your competitors instead of you.
 9. Outreach
Itâs good when your content finds its recognition by itself â when people can easily stumble upon it from Google. It means youâre a genius of SEO and marketing. However, what if your content still doesnât get as much recognition as you think it deserves?
You should present your material manually to the audience. And this very process is called outreach. The primary goal of outreach is not just promoting your content (and service as well) but building new business relationships with influential people from your niche.
I want to present you a short step-by-step plan on how to do outreach via email correctly:
Identify your targets
Find oneâs personal email address (you can use these tools findthat.email, Voilanorbert)
Prepare personalized email template with a âkillerâ subject line
Donât be afraid of sending a follow-up email
Be persistent in reaching out
I want to convince you that doing outreach in a proper way (and on a regular basis) will give you the results you need â traffic, brand visibility, and personal growth as a professional marketer.
SIDENOTE: if you want to know a bit detailed on how to do blogger outreach, you should check out this marvelous guide.
  Conclusion
Creating a magnetic blog is not a simple process, it takes lots of time, patience, and strength. Doing it on your own without additional knowledge might slow your efforts down. Likely, things canât be all that bad on your side!
Following these 9 basic yet powerful steps you will be able to run a successful blog that will bring you lots of benefits.
Now, since you have already been armed with my helpful tips, itâs time to start crafting your web resource. Perhaps, I âll be delightfully surprised when Iâll come across your blog in a few months reading some outstanding content.
If you have anything to add, please, feel free to share your insights in a comment section.
P.S donât forget to share it via social media
