Opening Sequence Rough Assembly

having filmed over the weekend of the 9th/10th April, editing has begun apace. this is a rough assembly of the opening scene, the characters arriving at the warehouse. a mixture of shots taken on the Black Magic Pocket4k, and a DJI Phantom for a couple of the shots. quite pleased with how the sequence flows, though I think I can tighten up a few of the shots to make sure that the continuity of movement is preserved and makes the most sense. the title will appear in the sky during the opening 10 seconds of stillness before the characters appear.

Hey, thank you for your question! For most of my filmed work in recent years, I worked with the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K EF. The lens, I most often use on it is an old Carl Zeiss Planar 1,4/50mm. There are some downsides to this camera: the internal battery is abysmally bad (basically useless) and the sensor is pretty noisy and only goes up to ISO800. It also can’t shoot anything above 30fps. There are two HUGE benefits to this camera though, when it comes to filming CRT screens: the sensor is configured to scan as global shutter, which means it scans all the pixels of the image at the same time, compared to scanning line-by-line (rolling shutter) as most CMOS cameras these days do (even some extremely expensive cinema cameras). The other benefit is, that the camera can scan at a 360° degree shutter mode, which means the sensor is scanning for very close to 1/25th of a second when filming 25fps (for 50Hz, 75Hz, 100 Hz screens), or 1/30rd when filming 30fps. The BMPC4k will also experience a huge price drop, now as the new Pocket4K hit the market, which is cheap, smaller, has better low-light capabilities, exchangeable batteries etc. (but no global shutter).

Another alternative would be to get one of the last few CCD cameras which could film HD (actually usually HDV2 1080i which is 1440*1080 with PAR stretched to 1920*1080 for playback) like the Sony HVR-Z1U, as all CCD video cameras like these usually had global shutter.

In my experience it is very hard to film a CRT screen at this level of quality with a rolling-shutter camera (most DSLRs, phones etc) even if properly synced. There are some tricks though. What I often did was film at 12,5 fps with a third party firmware like magic lantern, and played back the signal on the screen with half the frame rate and later played it back at double the speed. This way the rolling shutter is open for multiple cycles of the CRT beam which helps even things out. This GIF was filmed that way back in the day (AUG 2015), using a EOS 550D with Magic Lantern:

For post-production I go though the usual steps as most video productions. Happily the BMPC4k records in different quality levels of ProRes (RAW is overkill for my editing setup), so you can directly start working in an intermediate format. I usually film in ProRes422 or ProRes422(HQ). Sometimes I film in 4K, even when delivering in HD so I can denoise at the sensor’s native resolution and then interpolate down to 1080p. For denoising I use NEAT (at a temporal filter radius of 2 to 5), which in most cases gives me much better results than anything else I tested. For color I mostly work with AE CS6′ internal stuff, and very rarely go through the rather time consuming DaVinci Resolve workflow. I also sometimes make use of Filmconvert Pro to stylize my color in a film stock way, after basic color grading. I rarely use grain though, as bit rates of most online platforms still simply can’t handle the detail properly and you end up with additional compression artifacts instead of grain.

When working with my phone, I use apps like Filmic Pro, Pro HDR X, Camera+ etc. There are also some other cameras I use from time to time. I try to build up a wide variety of different cameras for different applications and aesthetics. Sadly missing in this image, is my favorite snapshot camera, a glitchy noname USB stick camera my father bought maybe 10 years ago in Shanghai. These Are the World’s First T/1.0 Cinema Lenses For a Range of Cameras

ZY Optics has annoucned four new ultra-fast Mitakon Speedmaster T/1.0 cinema lenses for filmmakers, covering a variety of focal lengths and lens mount compatibility encompassing Micro Four Thirds, Super 35, and Full-Frame.

The China-based lens manufacturer ZY Optics, which released its first Speedmaster lens in 2014, has announced four different T/1.0 cinema lenses that it claims are the world’s first at that speed: 17mm and 25mm in Micro Four Thirds mount only, 35mm in Canon RF, Fujifilm X, Sony E, and also Micro Four Thirds mount, and finally a 50mm lens in Canon EF and Arri PL mount. The lenses are designed to be compact and lightweight while still affordable and, of course, very fast.

All four focal lengths cover a variety of filmmaking needs and are designed for different cameras. For example, the company claims that the 17mm, 25mm, and 35mm, which all come with a Micro Four Thirds mount, are a fast and compact option for Panasonic GH5, Z-Cam E2, and Pocket4K. The 35mm has a Super35 image circle, while the 50mm lens is designed for full-frame EF/PL cinema cameras, which as ZY Optics claims, makes it the world’s fastest PL-mount cinema lens covering Arri Alexa LF and Red Monstro large-format sensors.

Visually, all four lenses sport a uniform black design and the 17mm weighs 1.32 pounds (597 grams), the 25m, the lightest lens in the line-up, weighs 1.18 pounds (535 grams), the 35mm weighs 1.36 pounds (615 grams), and the larger 50mm weighs significantly more at 3.97 pounds (1800 grams).

The fast T/1.0 aperture combined with a close minimum focusing distance and built-in nine-blade circular aperture mechanism produces what the company claims to be visually pleasing round and refined bokeh when used wide-open. All lenses in the line, with the exception of the 50mm, have a unified front diameter and gear position for easier handling. The external size of the lens remains constant due to the internal focus design and also allows accurate manual focus point control using its precise scale markings, even at a shallow depth of field.

In consecutive order, the following examples were shot using 17mm, 25mm, and 35mm lenses:

  On the other hand, the 50mm lens, with the example footage below, has a larger form factor due to its full-frame coverage and longer flange design. This lens has been constructed to match with professional large-format cinema cameras with PL/EF lens mount.

The new series of lenses are designed to suppress focus breathing to a minimum. This side effect can occur to both zoom and prime lenses when adjusting the focusing distance of a lens which can produce changes in the angle of view and magnification. The fast T/1.0 aperture also is clearly designed to support shooting in low-light scenarios.

The company claims that these lenses also deliver well-defined color contrast and sharpness of the images in comparison to lenses with similar specifications and within a similar price range. All four lenses aim to give natural colors with a hint of vintage toning and produce consistent color throughout different focal lengths.

The 17mm, 25mm, and 35mm, starting from $449 individually or as a $1,199 Micro Four Thirds lens combo set, are readily available on ZY Optics website, while the 50mm is expected to ship in late June. ZY Optics reveals that the company is working on adding more focal lengths to this line-up and more details will be released soon.
