Getting back to my indie-filmmaker roots today at The 253 Film Summit, which is awesome and inspiring. I'm officially here in my capacity as a member of the Tacoma creative community and as an educator, but I'm also here being reminded that movies were my first love. --- Great things are afoot in Washington, but it's still the same-old-same-old when it comes to representation of POC behind the scenes. This room is almost 50% POC artists and filmmakers, but guess who's doing all the presenting? And asking all the questions about how to get their projects funded? I don't even have to tell you. And I don't have to tell you that equity in representation, access and power in the arts is essential. --- #pocwriters #pocartists #pocfilmmakers #pocscreenwriters #pocart #washingtonfilm #pnwarts #tacomaarts #253film #representationmatters #timesup #equityinthearts #tacomacreates #tacomacreatives @wafilmworks @thegrandcinema @thetwcc (at University of Washington Tacoma) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxVZ8V5hVvL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1anp9s5w0u6is

Bobby Yan is one of the best directors i know, so it's ALWAYS a treat to have his films in MECCAcon IFF. This year, he will have a film that he directed, THE ADULTERER, as well as his own film w/ an all Asian cast (his first) THE INTERVIEW, which is visual GOLD. Super appreciative of all the submissions we've been receiving this year!! Another filmmaker we're excited to have this year is Sanicole Young whose film, Training Wheels Short Film is an official selection this year, and has been getting heavy attention in the film fest streets. Be on the lookout for that in promo to come. We're also super excited to add Shawn Antoine II to the family, alongside our cousin Korstiaan Vandiver!! Their film, Showtime Film, is absolutely outstanding, and such power filled storytelling in a very new and unique way. Another filmmaker we are bringing back is Jumai Yusuf, who is now tapping into horror with her new film, LUCID! Soooo many submissions, so little time, family. These are only a few! 6th annual MECCAcon Detroit #MECCAconDSA2019 at Detroit School of Arts, aka 6 floors of greatness, is underway in full... you comin'? tables/panels/presentations/performances/volunteering: [email protected]/ 3134510297 film: FilmFreeway.com/MECCAconIFF #indiefilm 💚#meccaconiff #indiefilmfest #blackfilm #pocfilmmakers #directher #arraynow #ava #avaduvernay #filmmakers #independentfilm #internationalfilmfestival #bobbyyan #sanicole #showtimefilm #marzfilm (at Detroit School of Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtzucWGBMY2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wykx030j5c0x

PRODUCER | DIRECTOR | EDITOR
2017 | Coalition of Communities of Color • Bridges
The Coalition of Communities of Color came to me wanting to spotlight their Bridges Program initiative. They wanted something that would be emotionally engaging but still inform viewers of its six, culturally specific, leadership academies. I chose to lean on more personal narratives in the style of mini-docs, rather than depending on stats and infographics to prove the success of their programs.
I made a series of seven videos, a trailer, some animated logos, and a small toolkit for their site branding. The seventh “about” video explains the collective power of the CCC's Bridges Program initiative, conceptually unifying the video series. The video showcased is the trailer, for the full series visit this link.

This year at sfzinefest we talked to Artists of Color about making zines and kicking a**. Here’s what they have to say about diversity, expression and finding a voice.

"Accordingly, the Orient is related to 'its eccentricity, it's silent indifference, its feminine penetrability'..." As I continue my research into representations of Eastern women, I notice that our modern day media industry continues the riffs first created by white supremacists during the colonialist era. This is why we need to boycott shows like Marco Polo and create stories about bold and fearless Eastern women to subvert the dominant stereotype.

Stills from my short film 老家 lǎojiā
native place / place of origin / home state or region This film explores the Chinese idiom “Lao Jia”, roughly meaning one’s homeplace or motherland. This phrase is a nostalgic reference to a past which no longer exists. As a fast growing nation, China experiences frightening amounts of development in rural and urban areas. Lao Jia’s become a thing of the past: a space and place only accessible through memory.
