It is so crazy how time after time, any doubt that I've had about my career, or life path, any question I've had about where I am or what I'm doing has been completely dissolved just by being at my school. Day after day being there is a testament to me that I am in the right place, doing the right things and making the right decisions. I don't think I can ever explain how grateful I am for where I am and the people I have in my life.

I'm awake at 3 AM with indigestion and thinking about school

I'm seeing a lot of people starting to burn out. What's really sad is when people who haven't even left core (the first 1.5-2 months of classroom instruction) yet are already trying to find loopholes in their contracts to drop out and get their money back. And frankly, I hope they do. See, I joined cosmetology school, not because I felt it was my only career option as a gay man or because I'm not intellectually qualified for anything else, but because it's an industry that I've wanted to be a part of for YEARS. I love every day that I get to go to school because it means I'm being handed the keys to my kingdom. I'm being given the knowledge I need to succeed in this field. Sure, some days are rough, and I'd be lying if I said there weren't days I thought I'd just quit. But when I encounter these days, I talk to someone who is going to lift me up, tell me what an amazing job I'm doing, and give me the motivation and support to keep on going. What I'm seeing a lot of, however, is students who are fed up with the politics of the school, or the fact that most of the sinks are broken, or that we don't always have the exact hair color we need, banding together and, instead of trying to organize and make changes, they bitch about things they can't control and cast major shade and side eye at their fellow students and to the learning leaders. To those students, I will say what my father said to me: "shape up, or ship out." I'm sorry you're unhappy. I'm sorry you feel like you've made the wrong decision. I'm sorry you feel like you know everything now that you've done a few colors, some cuts, a facial or a wax or two... But don't try to ruin it for, and bring down, those of us who are still learning, still having fun.
