Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a grand temple to Hindu god Ram in the flashpoint city of Ayodhya.
He said it heralded "a new era" for India - the temple replaces a 16th-Century mosque torn down by Hindu mobs in 1992, sparking riots in which nearly 2,000 people died.
Top film stars and cricketers were among guests at the event in Ayodhya.
But some Hindu seers and most of the opposition boycotted it, saying Mr Modi was using it for political gain.
General elections are due in India in the next few months and Mr Modi's political rivals say the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be seeking votes in the temple's name in a country where 80% of the population is Hindu.
Critics have also accused the government of exploiting a religious celebration in a country which - according to its constitution - is secular. For Muslims, India's biggest minority, the event evoked fear and painful memories, members of the community in Ayodhya told the BBC in the run-up to Monday's ceremony.
Televised live, it showed Mr Modi performing religious rituals inside the temple's sanctum along with priests and Mohan Bhagwat, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) - the ideological fountainhead of Hindu nationalist parties.
The complex history of India's Ayodhya holy site
Transforming a flashpoint holy city into the ‘Hindu Vatican’
"Today's date will go down in history," Mr Modi said after the event. "After years of struggle and countless sacrifices, Lord Ram has arrived [home]. I want to congratulate every citizen of the country on this historic occasion."
The temple has been constructed at a cost of $217m (£170m), funded from private donations. Only the ground floor was opened - the rest is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The construction work is part of a revamp for the city, estimated to cost more than $3bn.
The building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya fulfils a decades-long Hindu nationalist pledge. Many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was built by Muslim invaders on the ruins of a temple where the Hindu god was born.
The movement to build the temple helped propel the BJP into political prominence in the 1990s.
There was a festive atmosphere as tens of thousands of chanting Hindu devotees waved flags and beat drums - military helicopters showered flower petals on the temple. Saffron flags with pictures of Lord Ram line streets in the city festooned with marigolds, as do banners with the faces of Mr Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Some of India's biggest celebrities, including Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, attended.

In many other northern cities Hindus lit lamps, and saffron flags carrying images of Ram are fluttering on rooftops, including in several parts of Delhi. Cinemas screened the event, and big screens relayed pictures from Ayodhya to town squares and residential neighbourhoods.
The ceremony, called Pran Pratishtha, which loosely translates from Sanskrit into "establishment of life force", lasted about an hour. Hindus believe that chanting mantras and performing rituals around a fire will infuse sacred life in an idol or a photograph of a deity.
Several domestic TV stations built huge sets by the side of the river Saryu, a tributary of the Ganges, just behind the temple, and provided wall-to-wall coverage of the event, some proclaiming the moment of consecration as the start of "Ram Rajya" (Lord Ram's rule) in India.
Hindus celebrated the inauguration in other countries too. Massive billboards of Lord Ram graced Times Square in New York, where a group of devotees braved the freezing weather to gather in the middle of the night.
Temples all across the United Kingdom - where Indians are one of the largest diaspora groups - marked the event. Colourful posters had been shared inviting devotees to honour the occasion and celebrations involved flowers, sweets and music. There were also some celebrations in Muslim-majority Dubai - where Indians are a significant population - but from Indian news reports these appeared more muted than elsewhere.
In 2019, the Supreme Court gave the disputed land to Hindus after a protracted legal battle followed the mosque's demolition. Muslims were given a plot outside the city for a mosque but have yet to build one.
One member of the community the BBC spoke to in Ayodhya ahead of Monday's inauguration agreed that Hindus have the right to build the temple after the Supreme Court gave them the site.
"We did not accept that decision happily, but what can we do," he said. Another man said he was happy Hindus are building the temple - "but we are also sad because it was built after destroying a mosque".
The new three-storey temple - made with pink sandstone and anchored by black granite - stretches across 7.2 acres in a 70-acre complex. A 51-inch (4.25-ft) statue of the deity, specially commissioned for the temple, was unveiled last week. The idol has been placed on a marble pedestal in the sanctum sanctorum.
Thousands of police were deployed for Monday's event, despite Mr Modi having appealed to pilgrims not to turn up and to watch the ceremony on television. In many states a full or half day holiday was called, with schools and colleges closed and stock markets shut.
The build-up to a demolition that shook India
The man who helped Lord Ram win the Ayodhya case
But a sour note was struck with some top religious seers saying that as the temple was not yet complete, it was against Hinduism to perform the rituals there, and many opposition leaders deciding to stay away.
Some opposition-ruled states also announced their own plans for the day - West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she would pray at the iconic temple to goddess Kali in Kolkata and then lead an all-faith rally. The eastern state of Odisha (Orissa) unveiled huge plans to bring pilgrims to the Jagannath temple in Puri, one of the holiest sites for Hindus.
Authorities say they expect more than 150,000 visitors per day once the temple in Ayodhya is fully ready.
To accommodate this expected rush, new hotels are being built and existing ones spruced up as part of a major makeover and in recent weeks, a new airport and railway station have opened.
Officials say they are building a "world-class city where people come as pilgrims and tourists", but many local people have told the BBC that their homes, shops and "structures of religious nature" have been either completely or partially demolished to expand roads and set up other facilities.

"Global South"-PM Modi.
Collective title for colonised nations.
How charmingly clever.
So I'm watching Viceland Radio Hate 24hrs after finishing Billy Summer the 2020 novel by Stephen King, another assassin premise where the lone wolf titular character is part of an organised hit that turns sour. Head's up, I sped read through this work.
Next up program, WWE legends. *Spoilers*
Stop reading here if you intend to read the novel.
The story is really 3 parts. The first story is Billy getting set up to kill Joel, a bad man already incarcerated and probably facing the death penalty for multiple murders and sexual assault. The hero, and he is in character, has a double identity or rather treble identity so he can shooter in repository style while await in an office block for the target to appear outside the opposing courthouse, while Billy does this he also becomes Dalton, writer and friendly neighbourhood good fellow. He rents the office by day and lives in the burb's by night. He trusts no one, every interaction he's working the angles. This is a job afterall all.
Second part sees, young gang raped woman, Alice dumped outside Billy's hidey hole where he's gone lamb after the job goes south. Turns out media mogul very bad man, pedophile infanticide filthy rich WWE old creep, wanted Joel shot down on news time TV for shits and giggles.
Billy's writing a book throughout the story that reflects the pacing and story arch of the story. The love for writing comes through as more than passion but also as a vehicle for escapism and means to bring fantasy to life through self serving narrative, expression. You can do so and become anything in the literary world of creative writing, hello God. Trump is mentioned early on, because topical. Tweeter's will be on board with what's going down.
I was disappointed to find I'd been strung along to the penultimate climax of King imaginatively killing a Trump like figurehead. That distaste runs deep, yeah, but doesn't mean the reader wants to pay for the privilege.
Alices victimhood, the repeat mention of her raping and the garishness of the account and reiterations made me uncomfortable. I had to skim that stuff. Yuck.
Overall the story felt contrived and the pacing was off. The first part of the book, King intro. Alt version of 11/22/1963 from the writer perspective. Second part, gross. Billy and Alice grow into one really. Third part, well, I'd already checked out after grater ass happened.
“Sometimes stories cry out to be told in such loud voices that you write them just to shut them up.” — Stephen King

PM Modi inaugurates new projects, lays foundation stone for new ISRO launch complex in TN
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated projects and laid the foundation stones for new initiatives, totally worth over Rs 17,000 crore and castigated the UPA regime for not 'bothering' about Tamil Nadu's progress.
Laying the foundation stones and inaugurating projects, Modi said the state is writing a 'new chapter of progress,' and due to the Centre's efforts, modern connectivity in Tamil Nadu is 'on a new high.'
In a veiled reference to the ruling DMK, he alleged that though newspapers and TV channels wanted to highlight Centre's such efforts "the regime here won't allow them to do so,"
"But we won't desist from development work," Modi asserted.
Flagging off India's first indigenous green hydrogen waterway vessel in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi, he said increasing connectivity due to the consistent efforts of the Central Government has enhanced 'ease of living' in Tamil Nadu. |The new projects are an important part of the roadmap for a developed India.
"Whatever I am saying belongs neither to any political ideology nor to my own ideology, it only belongs to development."
Apparently targeting the DMK-Congress and pointing to a slew of development projects launched, he said: "I need to tell a truth to people of Tamil Nadu and the rest of the nation. Truth is bitter but it needs to be told...All these projects I have brought, they were demands of locals for decades."
In an indirect reference to the DMK, he said the Tamil Nadu's ruling party shared power at the Centre during the UPA regime.
However, they were not 'bothered about your progress.'
All the development initiatives have been delivered by the 'sevak,' he said in a reference to himself.
The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a new launch complex of ISRO at Kulasekarapattinam near here, which is worth about Rs 986 crore and the facility is set to accomodate 24 launches per year.
The new complex includes 35 facilities, and features mobile launch structure (MLS) with checkout computers marking a significant stride in enhancing space exploration capabilities.

Huge Turnout of Devotees at Ayodhya Ram Temple Following 'Pran Pratishtha'
The highly anticipated opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has drawn massive crowds a day after the grand consecration ceremony, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by numerous political figures and celebrities.
Prior to the temple’s public opening, a surge of devotees gathered at the site, with crowds assembling as early as 3 am. The gates will be accessible to the public from 7 am to 11:30 am and again from 2 pm to 7 pm.
The ‘pran pratishtha’ rituals unfolded yesterday, featuring PM Modi paying homage to the Ram Lalla idol. Distinguished guests, including Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, graced the ceremony with their presence.
Expressing his sentiments on Twitter, Prime Minister Modi stated, “The extraordinary moment of the consecration of Shri Ram Lalla’s life in Ayodhya Dham is going to leave everyone emotional. It is my great pleasure to be a part of this divine programme. Jai Siya Ram!”
Post the rituals, PM Modi addressed a gathering of approximately 8,000 individuals, comprising seers, Ram Janmabhoomi movement affiliates, and figures from various fields. The Prime Minister also visited Kuber Tila and engaged with workers contributing to the temple’s construction.
While the ceremony was broadcast nationwide, senior BJP leaders like JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah opted for live streaming. However, Opposition leaders chose to abstain from the event, leading to political disagreements between the BJP and the Opposition.
Several BJP-governed states declared the day a holiday, encouraging people to witness the ceremony on TV and partake in local temple festivities. Ayodhya’s atmosphere was further heightened by a devotional “Mangal Dhwani,” featuring 50 traditional musical instruments from across the country.
The construction of the Ram Temple concluded a protracted legal battle, culminating in the Supreme Court’s verdict in November 2019 in favor of the temple. Prime Minister Modi, in a national address, heralded the consecration of Ram Lalla’s idol as the dawn of a new era.
Addressing the nation, PM Modi remarked, “I have come before you as you witness the divine consciousness in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum. There’s so much to say, but there’s a lump in my throat. After unprecedented patience, innumerable sacrifices, and penance, our Lord Ram has arrived. I congratulate the country on this occasion.”
PM Modi called for unity, emphasizing that the temple signifies not just triumph but also humility, underscoring India’s maturity in resolving historical disputes. He urged critics to reconsider their perspectives, highlighting that Ram symbolizes energy, not fire, and is a solution, not a dispute.
“The construction of this temple of Ram Lalla is also a symbol of the Indian society’s peace, patience, and mutual harmony. We can see this has not given birth to a fire, but an energy,” he affirmed in a powerful and emotional post-consecration speech, invoking the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam,’ stating that Ram defines the world as a family.

PM Narendra Modi's Response To Student's Heartfelt Letter Goes Viral
In the letter, the student, Aarush Srivatsa, wrote to PM Modi on the same day of his mother's death, requesting him to accept his heartfelt condolences.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's heartwarming response to a condolence letter on his late mother Hiraben is going viral on social media. The letter, written by a class 2 student from Bangalore, was shared by Bhartiya Janta Party's (BJP) Khushbu Sundar on Twitter on Wednesday.
"This is the quality of a true Statesman! Hon'ble PM @narendramodi ji responds to the condolence letter of a class 2 student. These are life-changing gestures that will steer the life of this young one in the right direction," Ms Sundar wrote in the caption of her post.
PM Modi's mother passed away at the age of 99 on December 30 last year.
In the letter, the student, Aarush Srivatsa, wrote to the Prime Minister on the same day, requesting him to accept his heartfelt condolences. "I felt very sad to see on TV that your beloved mother Smt Heera Ben aged 100 years passed away today. Please accept my heartfelt condolences," he wrote. "I pray for her soul to rest at the notable feet of almighty god," the student added.
Responding to the letter on January 25, PM Modi said, "My gratitude for your heartfelt condolences on the passing away of my mother.
Mother's demise is an irreplaceable loss and its pain is beyond words. I thank you for including me in your thoughts and prayers. Such gestures provide me with the strength and courage to bear this loss. I once again thank you for the heartfelt condolences."
Since being shared, Mr Sundar's post has accumulated more than one million views and over 17,000 likes. In the comment section, internet users praised PM Modi's response to the student.
"This is so heartwarming. This child may be too young to understand this gesture right now, but it definitely will remain his most prized possession, forever," wrote one user. "It's truly inspiring to see leaders take the time to connect with young minds and make a positive impact on their lives," said another.
A third user commented, "Beyond roles, responsibilities, power structure, positions, age and stage, is simple pure human connect, that goes from one heart to another.
"Such a sweet gesture from the young boy! And of course, from Modiji as well. Kudos to the parents as well to encourage such a gesture!" added fourth.

“We have had three wars with India, and they have only brought more misery, poverty, and unemployment to the people.” Pakistan Prime Minister
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan wants to live in peace with India and asked for “serious and sincere talks” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on “burning issues like Kashmir”.
Sharif was in an interview with Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV where he stated that Pakistan has learned its lesson after getting defeated by India in three wars and now the country wants to live in peace with its neighbor.
“My message to the Indian leadership and Prime Minister Modi is that let’s sit down at the table and have serious and sincere talks to resolve our burning points like Kashmir. It is up to us to live peacefully and make progress or quarrel with each other and waste time and resources,” Shehbaz Sharif said.
“We have had three wars with India, and they have only brought more misery, poverty, and unemployment to the people. We have learned our lesson, and we want to live in peace with India, provided we can resolve our genuine problems,” he added.
“India is our neighbor country, we are neighbors. Let’s be very blunt, even if we are not neighbors by choice, we are there forever and it is up to us for us to live peacefully and progress or quarrel with each other and waste time and resources. That is up to us,” the Pakistan PM said.
He raised the Kashmir issue and said “Pakistan wants peace but what is happening in Kashmir should be stopped.”
Stating that both India and Pakistan have engineers, doctors, and skilled laborers, Sharif insisted that these assets must be used wisely. “We want to utilize these assets for prosperity and to bring peace to the region so that both nations can grow,” Sharif said.
“Pakistan does not want to waste resources on bombs and ammunition. We are nuclear powers, armed to the teeth, and if God forbid, a war breaks out, who will live to tell what happened?” he added.
