Pokemon Card of the Day #2886: Gligar (Neo Genesis)
Gligar saw a surprising amount of play in its day, being built somewhat like some of the earliest Pokemon. It was a free retreating Pokemon that only took Colorless Energy, being good with Double Colorless Energy in theory. Once the game moved to Rocket-On, Double Colorless Energy was gone, and Gligar still saw some use despite this. The stats probably had a good bit to do with that, even if its best was on so many other Pokemon.
60 HP was just below what the old standard of 70 was. 60 was still workable especially once PlusPower rotated out, as quite a few attacks landed around 50 at the time. The Grass Weakness was a real pain against Crobat and Erika's Victreebel, Pokemon used to help with the quite dominant Feraligatr. The Fighting Resistance was a bit less useful but had some use against Donphan and completely blocked Tyrogue. Gligar could also retreat for free, letting it work as a pivot if needed. Pivots were very easy to find at the time, which made it a bit less useful. Still very nice, though.
Poison Sting was 10 damage and a flip for Poison for a Fighting Energy. This wasn't really the reason people used Gligar, but Poison could shut off some Pokemon Powers so it was okay in a deck with that type of Energy in a pinch.
Slash was just a straightforward 20 damage for 2 Colorless Energy. This had some use in Base-Neo to hit Weakness, as a Double Colorless Energy let you do 40 to a Jigglypuff or the like. It was less useful in Rocket-On and Neo-On since there were fewer good targets (Fighting Weakness was somewhat rare) and it needed 2 attachments instead of 1.
Gligar was used a surprising amount even in Rocket-On, probably for being a pivot that resisted Tyrogue's attacks. Tyrogue was pretty popular in some areas, so the play made sense in that context even though the wider game wasn't the most kind to it. In the context of the format the way it's played now, Gligar probably isn't worth it outside of a silly Base-Neo play where you really expect the opponent to load up on Weaknesses to it, like taking out an Aipom or Erika's Jigglypuff. Pivots on their own, of course, were as easy to come by as using a Cleffa, and Gligar added just a tiny bit more to make it slightly useful.

3-time TCG World Champion Jason Klaczynski has a fantastic site that examines Pokémon TCG metas from 1999 to 2016. He has very recently included a section on the Game Boy Color game, so naturally I had to share it. It mentions some minute details that I was not aware of -- such as the initiator of a Link Battle always winning the coin toss, along with PlusPower boosting Peal of Thunder -- but it's relevant either way.

For Christmas, I wish my Plus Queens would not put themselves down, especially to or in front of others. Don't say things like.. " I'll never find a man cause I'm a Big Girl." or " I will never find anything to fit me because I'm a Big Girl." You are speaking that garbage into your life. You have to stop. I know sometimes its hard... but don't speak those words ever again. Speak good things over yourself. We teach people how to treat us by the way we treat ourselves. Merry Christmas Queen. You are @fullfiguredfierce OWN THAT SHIT!!! .. #isaidwhatisaid #PlusEmpowermentWeek #livingmypluslife #pluspower #lanebryant #torrid #ashleystewart #styleandcurve (at Huntsville, Alabama) https://www.instagram.com/p/BryHJI-g621/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bcsjx002q26

Pokemon Card of the Day #2729: Rocket’s Mewtwo (Gym Challenge)
While quite a few cards have had 3 (or even 4, in one case) attacks, Rocket’s Mewtwo was the first. This looked rather strange on the first try, and they had to make the art smaller to fit it all in. As for how the card itself worked, there was a flip-based attack that could be useful when it worked, a rather poor middle attack, and a pretty strong final attack that needed a lot of Energy. The options and the HP on a Basic Pokemon had some people thinking this would be quite good. Some of that was just the novelty of having 3 attacks, but there were clearly some things to work with here.
70 HP was that number where so many good Basic Pokemon sat in 1999 and 2000, being high enough to force Wigglytuff to use a PlusPower and even being able to take 2 Slashes from Scyther without a use of the same thing. It was slightly less useful by Gym Challenge with Rocket’s Zapdos being around, but it wasn’t like it was bad. The bad came in the form of a Psychic Weakness, which let the Promo Mewtwo get a KO. Dark Gengar and potentially even Espeon was worth noting in Rocket-On as well. The Retreat Cost here was 2, which was unsurprising. Having something like a Warp Point or Scoop Up could be nice, especially in Base-Gym where Energy was precious.
The first move here was based on luck, but had some potential to be a big deal. The cost of Juxtapose was a Psychic Energy, and there was a coin flip. The flip had to be heads for anything to happen. If it was, you switched the number of damage counters on Rocket’s Mewtwo with those on the Defending Pokemon, even if a Pokemon would be Knocked Out. There was potential to heal a bunch and do damage here, but a tails usually meant doing nothing right before Rocket’s Mewtwo fell. This was more of a desperation move against any deck with offense than anything. Against stall, on the other hand, you sometimes got a couple of tries at it. It was also very silly against Mr. Mime if it worked, though that came with the risk of being taken out by Meditate if it failed.
Hypnoblast wasn’t great. 20 damage and Sleep for 2 Psychic Energy wasn’t keeping up well.
Psyburn was hard to get going, as 3 Psychic and a Colorless Energy was going to take a while in any format and would be almost impossible to make work in Base-Gym or Base-Neo with Energy Removal around. 60 damage was pretty good, being able to take anything that didn’t resist it down in 2 hits. Sadly, a lot of Colorless-types did resist it, and the best chance to make this work was in the Rocket-On format where the bad match-ups and Energy Removal cards weren’t as big of an issue.
Rocket’s Mewtwo was more of an interesting card than a good one. Having three attacks was a new thing to the game, which was what got most of the interest. Juxtapose was very good when it worked but awful when it didn’t, and Psyburn was hard to get going. When given enough time, Rocket’s Mewtwo was still pretty good. It didn’t tend to hold up well against the best decks of any format it was in, which made it more of a collector’s item than something you wanted to play. It wasn’t like the game lacked a good Mewtwo card to play with already.

Trainer Types
Categorizing Trainer Cards into six basic types can help you think like a master
By Kate “Pokémon Lady” Johnson. Originally published in Pojo’s Unofficial Pokémon (Vol. 1, No. 8, June 2000)
As you’ve probably read before, Trainers can make or break a deck. But with all the Trainers to choose from, it can be hard to pick the right ones for your deck. So, let’s examine the different types of Trainers and explain which decks they belong in.
Healing Trainers
Healing Trainers are pretty straightforward: use them to remove damage from your Pokémon or to cure status effects. Trainers of this type should definitely be included in stall or Damage Swap decks. Remember that your opponent will have a harder time winning if your Pokémon can’t be Knocked Out.
Full Heal, Scoop Up, Potion, Super Potion, Pokémon Center, Devolution Spray, Mr. Fuji, Potion Energy
Disruption Trainers
Disruption Trainers cause your opponents trouble by removing needed Energy or by forcing them to discard key Trainers of their own. They can also be used to score easy KOs by forcing out weak monsters from the Bench. Disruption Trainers should be included in any Energy Denial deck or any deck in which you’re just trying to be ornery.
Energy Removal, Super Energy Removal, Lass, Impostor Professor Oak, Pokémon Flute, Gust of Wind, Rocket’s Sneak Attack, Goop Gas Attack
Manipulation Trainers
Deck-manipulation Trainers do just what their name implies -- manipulate cards in your hand, deck, or Prizes. This type of Trainer allows you to draw cards, search your deck, or retrieve cards from your Discard Pile. Pokémon-manipulation Trainers allow you to trade Pokémon in your hand for Pokémon in your deck or to retrieve Pokémon from your Discard Pile.
Manipulation Trainers should be included in decks of every type. I recommend at least two Bills, Professor Oaks, or Gamblers in any deck. You can also include Pokémon Trader, Item Finder, and Computer Search in many decks. Choosing the right manipulation Trainers can quicken the deck speed, supply the Energy needed to Rain Dance, or find Bench Pokémon for Wigglytuff’s Do the Wave.
Computer Search, Bill, Professor Oak, Pokédex, Maintenance, Gambler, Pokémon Trader, Recycle, Poké Ball, The Boss’ Way, Challenge!, Nightly Garbage Run, Here Comes Team Rocket!
Defensive & Offensive Trainers
Defensive and offensive Trainers are very different. Defensive Trainers protect your Pokémon from attacks, while offensive Trainers increase the amount of damage you can inflict during your turn. Defensive Trainers are often found in stall or Damage Swap decks, while Offensive Trainers are often found in Haymakers, Potpourri, and speed decks.
Use defensive Trainers like Potion and Super Potion to heal your damaged Pokémon and prevent them from being Knocked Out. Gambler can be used to prevent yourself from “decking out”, and Clefairy Doll can act as a one-turn wall in times of need.
Offensive Trainers, like PlusPower, are often used to give your Pokémon that added boost they need to Knock Out an opponent.
Defensive: Clefairy Doll, Defender, Potion, Super Potion, Gambler
Offensive: PlusPower, Gust of Wind, Pokémon Flute, Digger, Impostor Oak’s Revenge, Sleep!
Energy Trainers
The final type of Trainer Card deals with Energy. Energy Trainers either remove, retrieve, or act in the place of Energy Cards. They should be included in any deck in which the goal is to remove your opponent’s Energy or in decks with low Energy counts. Energy Retrievals and Searches are great for decks that burn though Energy, like mono-Fire decks.
Energy Retrieval, Energy Removal, Super Energy Removal, Energy Search, Potion Energy, Rainbow Energy
Using Trainer Cards to strengthen a deck’s theme or strategy will help you become a world-class Pokémon Trainer. Use the above guidelines to improve your favorite deck, and, as always, don’t be afraid to experiment.

I just love a good intense TCG match :D
Especially if I end up winning! >:D
#don't mind me having a moment#Putting my opponent in a situation where I win if I knock out even one more pokemon only for#him to deck out first was beautiful (all of those stalling moves didn't help though ahaha)#(though I still regret sacrificing Arcanine (twice!) when I could have just used a PlusPower OTL)#and then sweeping Ronald with Hitmonchan. Priceless! >:D#The TCG gba game is probably one of the more frustrating pokemon games#but when you finally have a good deck it's so fun! ^^#But...how am I supposed to rearrange my deck to get Eevee and Jolteon in there when I like my current setup so much ;_;
