Transforming your bathroom into a luxurious retreat doesn't have to be daunting, especially with the timeless elegance of black marble. The deep, rich tones of black marble not only exude sophistication but also create a striking contrast that can elevate any space. In this blog post, we will explore the allure of a black marble bathroom, highlighting how this dramatic feature can infuse modern elegance into your home.
Black Marble Bathroom
The black marble bathroom is a stunning choice for those looking to create a sophisticated and luxurious space. This bold design element can transform an ordinary bathroom into an exquisite sanctuary. The rich tones and unique veining of black marble bring an air of elegance and style that is both timeless and contemporary.
When incorporating black marble into your bathroom, consider options such as black marble countertops, vanity tops, and even accent walls. The contrast against lighter colors can create a striking and dramatic effect, making your space feel more expansive and well-defined.
One of the key benefits of a black marble bathroom is its versatility. It pairs beautifully with a variety of materials, such as brushed gold or chrome fixtures, and complements different color palettes, from soft whites to vibrant jewel tones. This adaptability allows homeowners to personalize their space while maintaining a cohesive look.
There are various finishes available for black marble, each offering a unique aesthetic. A polished finish provides a sleek, glossy surface that reflects light beautifully, while a honed finish delivers a more understated, matte look that can soften the overall appearance of the bathroom.
Lighting plays a crucial role in showcasing the beauty of a black marble bathroom. Consider installing ambient lighting to highlight the natural veins and texture of the black marble. Additionally, task lighting around mirrors can enhance visibility and add warmth to the space.
To add depth and interest, incorporate other design elements that create contrast and texture. For example, pairing black marble with wooden accents can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Textiles such as plush towels and bath mats in lighter shades can also soften the overall look.
With its rich aesthetic and timeless appeal, a black marble bathroom is more than just a design choice; it’s an opportunity to create a luxurious retreat in your home. Whether you’re planning a complete renovation or simply looking to refresh your existing space, integrating black marble can elevate your bathroom to new heights.
Modern Marble Bathroom
When it comes to designing a modern marble bathroom, the emphasis is on clean lines, minimalistic features, and the striking appeal of marble. This luxurious stone, often associated with opulence, can elevate your bathroom space into a sanctuary of relaxation.
One of the defining characteristics of a modern marble bathroom is the color palette. While many opt for classic whites and creams, darker shades like black or gray marble create a bold statement. Black marble, with its rich depth and unique veining, can transform traditional notions of bathroom design, making it a chic and contemporary choice.
A key feature in a modern marble bathroom is the seamless integration of marble into various elements, from countertops to flooring. Large format tiles have become increasingly popular, creating a sense of space and continuity. Pairing these tiles with elegant fixtures and understated accessories enhances the overall aesthetic without detracting from the beauty of the marble.
Vanities in a modern marble bathroom often showcase the stone’s natural patterns, turning functional furniture into a visual centerpiece. Choosing sleek hardware and soft-close drawers can maintain a streamlined look, while integrated lighting adds warmth and sophistication.
For those seeking to add a touch of personality, consider incorporating wood elements or contrasting materials like glass. These choices balance the heaviness of marble with lightness, making the bathroom feel both inviting and serene.
Incorporating plants or greenery can breathe life into the cool, polished surfaces of a modern marble bathroom. Strategic placement of greenery not only adds color but also promotes a calming environment.
Lastly, don’t forget about the practicality of maintaining your modern marble bathroom. While marble is undeniably glamorous, it requires regular sealing and care to keep it in pristine condition. Choosing the right products for cleaning and maintenance will ensure your marble retains its beauty for years to come.
Bathroom Marble Design
When it comes to creating a luxurious and sophisticated space, bathroom marble design stands out as an exceptional choice. Marble is known for its timeless beauty, variety, and ability to elevate the overall aesthetic of any bathroom. In this section, we will explore some key elements and ideas related to bathroom marble design.
Choosing the Right Marble
One of the first steps in bathroom marble design is selecting the right type of marble. From classic white Carrara to striking black marquina, the options are abundant. Each type of marble comes with its unique veining and color variations, allowing you to match the marble to your personal style. Consider how different marbles will interact with your bathroom's lighting and the overall color scheme to create the desired atmosphere.
Incorporating Patterns
Another exciting aspect of bathroom marble design is the ability to incorporate patterns. Marble can be cut and laid out in various patterns like herringbone, checkerboard, or even geometric shapes. These designs can add depth and interest to your bathroom, making it feel more dynamic and stylish.
Combining with Other Materials
To enhance your bathroom marble design, consider combining marble with other materials. Pairing marble with warm woods, sleek metals, or even vibrant tiles can create an intriguing contrast and elevate the space further. This combination can help to soften the look of marble, making it feel more inviting and less formal.
Accent Features
Incorporating marble accent features like vanity tops, shower surrounds, or even marble sinks can transform a standard bathroom into a luxurious retreat. These elements become focal points in the design, drawing attention and admiration. For a truly unique touch, consider custom marble pieces that reflect your style.
Maintenance and Care
While the beauty of marble is undeniable, it's important to consider its maintenance. Proper care, including regular sealing and careful cleaning, will keep your bathroom marble design looking pristine. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the stone, and always use coasters or mats to prevent stains and scratches.
In summary, bathroom marble design offers a wealth of possibilities to create a stunning and elegant space. With the right choices and careful planning, you can achieve a bathroom that embodies luxury and style.

Iris Barrel Apfel, Decorator and Fashion Stylist
(August 29, 1921 – March 1, 2024)
Ms. Apfel was one of the most vivacious personalities in the worlds of fashion, textiles, and interior design, she has cultivated a personal style that is both witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic.
Her originality was typically revealed in her mixing of high and low fashions—Dior haute couture with flea market finds, nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments with Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers.
With remarkable panache and discernment, she combines colors, textures, and patterns without regard to period, provenance, and, ultimately, aesthetic conventions. Paradoxically, her richly layered combinations—even at their most extreme and baroque—project a boldly graphic modernity.
Iris Barrel was born on Aug. 29, 1921, in Astoria, Queens, the only child of Samuel Barrel, who owned a glass and mirror business, and his Russian-born wife, Sadye, who owned a fashion boutique.
She studied art history at New York University, then qualified to teach and did so briefly in Wisconsin before fleeing back to New York to work on Women's Wear Daily, and for interior designer Elinor Johnson, decorating apartments for resale and honing her talent for sourcing rare items before opening her own design firm. She was also an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman.
As a distinguished collector and authority on antique fabrics, Iris Apfel has consulted on numerous restoration projects that include work at the White House that spanned nine presidencies from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.
Along with her husband, Carl, she founded Old World Weavers, an international textile manufacturing company and ran it until they retired in 1992. The Apfels specialized in the reproduction of fabrics from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and traveled to Europe twice a year in search of textiles they could not source in the United States.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute assembled 82 ensembles and 300 accessories from her personal collection in 2005 in a show about her called “Rara Avis”.
Almost overnight, Ms. Apfel became an international celebrity of pop fashion.
Ms. Apfel was seen in a television commercial for the French car DS 3, became the face of the Australian fashion brand Blue Illusion, and began a collaboration with the start-up WiseWear. A year later, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in her image. Last year, she appeared in a beauty campaign for makeup with Ciaté London.
Six years after the Met show she started her fashion line "Rara Avis" with the Home Shopping Network.
She was cover girl of Dazed and Confused, among many other publications, window display artist at Bergdorf Goodman, designer and design consultant, then signed to IMG in 2019 as a model at age 97.
Ms. Iris Apfel became a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin in its Division of Textiles and Apparel, teaching about imagination, craft and tangible pleasures in a world of images.
In 2018, she published “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon,” an autobiographical collection of musings, anecdotes and observations on life and style.
Ms. Apfel’s apartments in New York and Palm Beach were full of furnishings and tchotchkes that might have come from a Luis Buñuel film: porcelain cats, plush toys, statuary, ornate vases, gilt mirrors, fake fruit, stuffed parrots, paintings by Velázquez and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a mannequin on an ostrich.
The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach, Florida, is designing a building that will house a dedicated gallery of Ms. Apfel's clothes, accessories, and furnishings.
Ms. Apfel’s work had a universal quality, It’s was a trend.

Broken Dishes
I enjoyed the rambling post about personal quilt history and I saw another pattern in my meanderings yesterday that I wanted to connect back through history, albeit more briefly (in theory.
Tumblr media
The Postcards from Sweden quilt is currently hugely popular (and free!) Designer Kelly Liddle was inspired by a simple postcard found in an IKEA store. The pattern is essentially the classic quilt block called broken dishes, which is made up of our friends the half square triangle. The Postcards from Sweden abandons more traditional use of light and dark contrasts in favor of bright fabrics which have a lot of visual interest but little contrast.*
Tumblr media
The maker of this Broken Dishes quilt made with silk fabrics around 1920 uses fabrics with a similar tone across the center of the quilt and it has deep plush quilting that almost succeeds as disguising the classic HST. The maker likely began in the center of the quilt, and added blocks around the sides later on, perhaps due to miscalculating the size of the finished piece. The final result is opulent and I would LOVE to run my hands over the contrasting texture of the silk and the quilting lines.
Tumblr media
This cotton version of the same block incorporates more contrast, but using dark where other quilters might use the light. Made around 1930 it feels very modern with its deep black border and vibrant hues.
Tumblr media
This undated broken dishes quilt has the same wide border, but a cooler color pallete combined with a larger block size makes for a more soothing experience for the viewer.
*One way to look at contrast in quilts or in other textile arts is to convert an image to black and white.

Step inside this enchanting tiny home and feel the warmth of a space that radiates comfort and personal expression. The rustic wooden walls enclose a sanctuary filled with vibrant, tribal textiles, each detail telling a story of craftsmanship and connection to the earth. Plush pillows and layered patterns draw you into the built-in daybed, where you can curl up with a good book as soft light filters through the forest outside. With its open yet intimate design, this tiny retreat proves that even the smallest spaces can be filled with big style and soul. Every corner whispers of a life lived in harmony with nature, where simplicity meets artistry in the most inviting of ways.

Side Character Fluff #03
[for @silvergiftingweek, Day 1: Beginnings]
Annatar wasn't known for his collaborations. His clothing line, Tol-Ainö, stood alone, masterful and beautiful. Accessories? Wearing his name, you rarely needed any. That wasn't to say Annatar never collaborated on a project. Sometimes, on rare occasions, he had an idea for something that required another artist.
“Annatar,” his personal assistant said, sticking their head into his drafting room. “He's here.”
Annatar looked up from his patterns. His assistant looked at him through thin glasses. They were willow tall and thin, an uninspired mix of elf and human, the kind of person who could model for one of those sleek, modern summer-wear lines. They did, in fact, until Annatar snatched them up, keenly sensing  they were more than just a pretty body. He was right, of course, but being pretty didn't hurt.
“Good,” he said, straightening up. “Take him to my office.”
His office was tastefully comfortable. None of this modern minimalism nonsense. He waited a few minutes before following. He liked to see how other artists responded to his office. A litmus test, of sorts.
He stopped by his assistant's desk, picking up the packet of draft papers filled with thoughts.
“I put on a pot for tea,” his assistant said.
Annatar nodded and entered the office.
Mannequins lined the room, displaying some of his favorite mockups and runway ideas. The walls were artfully covered with sketches of gowns and suits and outfits that had no practical purpose beyond pushing textiles to an extreme. Instead of a desk and armchairs for entertaining guests and patrons, tasseled pillows sat on the plush rug, inviting guests to sit or recline while imagining with him. He had eyes for none of that.
To the left of the room, inspecting the paper thin corset on a mannequin, stood an elf.
He was facing away from the door and Annatar had a clear view of two lines of sleek black braids. Painted wood and metal beads accented the long hair. His attire was nothing impressive but they fit the person: a jeweler from a small town who wasn't quite used to being known by the larger world, comfortable in his clothes and unembarrassed by his waistline.
“Hello, Celebrimbor,” Annatar said.
Celebrimbor turned around, an easy smile on his soft face. “Hello, you must be Annatar.”
Annatar's smile was more reserved. Celebrimbor was… an interesting elf.
If there’s one thing he liked, it’s interesting things.
