Finally: it's my Gigantamax Alcremie cake!

This is my most-requested Pokemon bake, and we finally did it as part of our St. Jude PLAY LIVE fundraiser on Twitch on my birthday last month!

Towering over 17" tall, this is my first tiered cake, first ganache drip, first cake pop/fondant character, first time using cookie cutters on buttercream, all completely home-made!

Alcremie is one of my new favourite Pokemon, and I was so stoked to get to do this, if also crazy intimidated. The GMax Alcremie plushie was a great reference (they wound up basically the same height), and loved the 7 little Alcremie A La Mode plush keychains for decor!

Made of:

2 tiers of rainbow sprinkles cake

2 tiers of Momofuku birthday cake

Momofuku "birthday cake crumbs" between every cake layer

Buttercream frosting

Dozens of meringue kisses

Buttercream hearts, stars, etc

Ganache drip on the top and bottom tiers

Alcremie made of cake pop/truffle covered in ganache and fondant with fondant details

Purple fondant ribbon

Seriously that’s all the fondant

Lots of milkshake straws supporting all the weight

Louis is up to his elbows in frosting. He’s got a mix of buttercream, fondant and ganache causing a mess everywhere. The door to his shop bangs open, spilling in brilliant sunshine from outside. Louis glances up from his workstation to see who’s capable of ripping a door off its hinges. If that breaks, he’ll be paying it off for months.

The friendly jingle alerts him of his new customer. He squints against the sunlight and can make out the silhouette of his sister, Lottie.

“Where’s the cake, wanker?” she asks by way of a greeting. Louis brushes some idle fringe off his forehead and smears chocolate ganache in the process.

“Lovely to see you too. Don’t have time for your silly Galentine’s Day cake, love. I’ve got three wedding cakes to finish for people actually in relationships. You know, people not like you and your girlfriends,” Louis says, filling a piping bag with vanilla buttercream frosting. The bride was very clear to him that she wanted vanilla frosting on the outside, with a chocolate ganache only on the top layer. He’s going to be working hours to get it to lay right.

“Wouldn’t be so bloody single if you had any decent friends to set me up with,” Lottie says, dipping a finger into the buttercream sitting in the bowl. Louis whacks her hand away.

“Did mum raise you in a barn, separate from the rest of us and I’ve just blocked it out? Now I’m going to have to make this again. Get out,” Louis says, already in motion to whip up more frosting. In the meantime, he’s going to wash his hands and try not to murder his sister. Lottie leaves in a huff, trailing perfume in her wake.

“Mate, do we have more cupcake liners? We’ve been out for a few days and I’ve had to make do with doilies I nicked from my nan,” Zayn, Louis’ business partner, drawls from the back of the shop. His head pops out from behind the backroom. Zayn’s usual impeccably-coiffed hair is covered in flour but he grins easily at Louis anyway.

“Just keep doing the doilies for the time being, yeah?” Louis shouts over the running water as he washes off every bit of frosting from his body. “Once I finish up these wedding cakes, we should be able to float by for a bit longer.” The rest of the day at Crumble Shop, aptly named by Zayn and Louis’ mutual friend Niall over a drunken night of pizza two years ago, passes too quickly for Louis’ liking. He only has the one wedding cake finished by the time they start to close up shop. Zayn shrugs his coat on as he makes a beeline for the door. Louis is sitting propped up on the front counter of the shop, reading through receipts and invoices from the day’s meager business.

“You need a break, man. That wedding cake you finished looks sick. Put the receipts down and leave at a normal time like normal people do,” Zayn says as he zips up his navy puffer jacket.

“Not all of us have boyfriends to get to, Z. I’ll finish closing up. See you tomorrow, alright? We need to get the Stefano wedding cake finished before the groom’s mum comes in again,” Louis says, flipping to the Stefano invoice from a few months back. The groom’s mum was a nightmare, interjecting her opinions about every bit of the cake before the couple had a chance to say anything.

Louis won’t let that happen with his own wedding cake. The idea of forever still feels like some shiny, out-of-reach fantasy for him, but he dreams all the same. Four tiers filled with delicate almond sponge. Raspberry buttercream layers in between the tiers, then covered in a whipped white frosting. He wants fresh raspberries dotting the cake, and some nice scalloped lace adorning the whole thing in bright, white icing.

Zayn flees the shop, leaving Louis alone to his own devices. He glances out the window to the storefronts across the street. Everyone’s decorated for Valentine’s except Crumble Shop. Every year, Niall tries to convince them to let him do something to the windows. Ever since his girlfriend dragged him to one of those ‘get sloshed and do some shit paintings’ thing, he fancies himself an expert artist.

“You two need some holiday cheer, badly. At Christmas, just let me do like a painted tree. Valentine’s we can just do some simple hearts, nothing excessive,” Niall had pleaded the last time they all went out to the pub. Louis never wants to decorate, though. He’s a bit of a Grinch in that regard.

“The cakes and cookies can speak for themselves, Nialler. People know what month it is. They don’t need us plastering the window in your shitty art to remind them,” Louis had told him, ducking out of the way from Niall’s well-timed punch to his bicep. Louis flicks the front lights off, stuffing all the receipts and invoices into a few file folders. They aren’t the best at organization, him and Zayn. In the back of the shop, Louis collapses onto a green velvet couch and grabs his laptop.

This couch has been through four years of pastry school, plus two moves between him and Zayn. It’s worn and comfortable. Louis settles down into the plush cushions and finally lets his body relax. The scent of sugar and butterscotch wafts through the air while he checks his bank account. He frowns at the numbers, deciding to switch to his email instead.

“Junk, bill, another bill, a message from Aunt Dotty, bill, junk, and….this,” Louis says, opening just the one email out of all the others he’s got. He usually auto-deletes most things, even the bills. Out of sight, out of mind. But this email’s got a subject line too intriguing to pass up. He opens it without a thought and begins to read.

Louis lifts an eyebrow. He stretches out on the couch to peek his head out round the front of the shop. Snow is beginning to fall. January in London can be so dreary. He has no idea why he got this email, or what it means, or why there are only a few letters capitalized. But he’s restless and exhausted. So he thinks about what to say back, and then he responds.

Media Tasting at Kumoya x Sesame Street

Kumoya is known to successfully transform itself into various themed pop-up cafe and has already collaborated with some of the world’s most iconic brand such as Cinnamoroll, Miffy, Care Bears, tokidoki, Mr Men Little Miss, My Little Pony, Pusheen and Snoopy.

For this last quarter of the year, Kumoya will be joining in the fun with Sesame Street to celebrate its 50th anniversary! Get ready to experience childhood once again as you step into the brightly lit cafe, decorated with vibrant colours of Sesame Street characters such as Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch! It was definitely a bonus to have L sized character plushies seated beside you as you dine!

Let’s check out the menu of kawaii food designs curated by Shirley Wong with over 5 years of experience in this field of arts. 

From their drinks selection, the most popular choice seems to be the Cookie Monster Cookies’ Shot with Match Milk. This cute little set comes with the edible cookie cup which your could drink your match milk from. Not forgetting the cute 5 inch cookie monster keychain plush which you could take home!

If you are a fan of matcha like me, another option would be Oscar’s the Grouch Matcha Caramel Frappe. Milky with thick creamy frappe and signature fondant eyebrows!

For the mains, I had one which shouts ‘KAWAII’ the most! It was the ABCD and E for

Elmo Japanese seafood curry rice. What a lengthy name… The Elmo face is made up of fluffy tomato infused rice, served with Japanese curry and accompanied by breaded ebi, breaded calamari and tempura salmon. 

Another catchy looking dish would be the ‘Oscar’s teriyaki chicken katsu burger is the one!’ with its chicken katsu dipped in teriyaki sauce and green matcha mantou, fresh garden salad within the bin itself. Not forgetting everyone’s favourite crispy curly fries!

With a series of fried appetisers from its menu, I had the Karaage Chicken with Shoyu Glaze served in a pretty customised characters box. Each piece was rather moist and pairs well with the sweet savoury shoyu dip.

Last but not least, I have been waiting for the desserts as the colours were all so vibrant, picking up the mood for diners. 

A for Abby Cadabby’s Magical Rainbow Pancakes arrived with stacks of colourful buttermilk pancakes served with fresh-churned Hokkaido soft serve. Beautifully garnished with edible sprinkles, colourful meringue kisses, handmade cookie, fresh cream with strawberries and fluffy cotton candy! The magical sparkler that lit up by the staff was irresistibly cute as well!!

Being a Matcha fan as usual, the Oscar is very grouchy matcha caramel parfait was inevitably my choice as well. The parfait was served with double-swirl Hokkaido matcha soft serve, matcha soufflé cake, azuki, Japanese dango, matcha crumble, fresh cream with strawberries and a handmade cute Oscar the Grouch butter cookie. 

If you would like caffeine, go ahead to grab their Cookie Monster’s OM NOM NOM iced latte brewed with mild Japanese coffee bean and definitely not too sweet.

It was a delightful experience as other customers including myself took plenty of photos with the food and the cute plushies! Who could resist not snapping photos of such KAWAII-ness???

Sesame Street x Kumoya will only be available from Thursday, 26 September 2019 to Sunday, 29 December 2019.
