yo i really wanna post another chapter of the gini au i started AGES ago but i don’t wanna intersect with the hsmtmts fandom lol idk i just... i haven’t though about that show in a while and the only reason i wanna continue it is bc social media au’s are really fun to write and despite having like no plan for the plot i liked it but idk

I could write a whole essay on that sentence alone. I made a post similar to that sentence last week about how disheartening it is that JATP, DOAFP, and now this have all gotten canceled one right after the other. I don't understand why the industry thinks that no one wants to watch shows about tweens and younger teens. When these shows DO get made, who the show is made for can sometimes be confusing. If you take a Disney Channel sitcom that takes place in high school, you are going to notice that high school students aren't actually watching them, middle school kids are (I did watch these in high school but I was in the minority) High school kids are watching shows like Euphoria and Riverdale, shows that sexualize the teen experience into something that is honestly unrecognizable to most people. What is worse is that shows like Riverdale and Euphoria are most beloved by adults... why are adults so obsessed with watching sexy 30 year old teens have sex??? It's WEIRD. But something like DOAFP is perfect for middle school students because it tells an honest portrayal of what it is like in middle school. I also watched DOAFP and I'm...not... middle school aged. There are people who will watch these shows but you have to give them a chance. Market them correctly!! Actually tell people about them!! Don't rely on algorithms!!! Also these shows can be edgy and appropriate at the same time. Honestly I was VERY surprised with how much Doogie Kamealoha got away with in its first season. When a character said the word "bitchy" I nearly FAINTED. This was DISNEY PLUS. But it proves that your shows for teens can be realistic but not sexualized if they really want to be!!! We can't keep making shows that are just clean clean clean or dirty dirty dirty. This post got away from me but I think I made my point.

DOAFP Season 2 (It was chill!)

It’s here! After what was definitely too long a wait, Season 2 finally came and it did not disappoint at all. Thoughts below!

I gotta say the humor felt like it ratcheted up this season. After the constant barrage of jokes from the Miami play situation, I realized that the show had a very Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt/Tina Fey-ish style of humor, at least sometimes. 

The supporting characters were all great. Claude was funny and I liked the way he handled the play situation with Elena. Melissa’s heel turn to being a nice girl was a welcome change, and hooray to them lifting up black girls in STEM. Sasha and Jessica felt like their characters were more downplayed but it wasn’t too bad, they could’ve been Ziggy. Danny had a much stronger screen presence and I wasn’t mad at that at all, dude’s funny.

The only recurring character I could’ve done without was the one played by that woman but it’s only because she gives me the heebie jeebies.

On the whole I liked the story they were telling with Elena and Gabi. Elena’s growing up, she’s in the awkward teenager phase, so her relationship with her mother is growing and changing. *But* watching 8 episodes back-to-back, and later the other two, the pattern of “Elena does something dickish and then later makes up for it” and/or “Gabi/Sam feels insecure about this aspect of their relationship/family and then later they make up” was very....wearing.

The show makes up for it because it’s so darn heartwarming, but still, in that regard watching the show week to week wouldn’t have been a problem.

Bobby, on the other hand, had a much more linear story arc and it should probably come as no surprise that I enjoyed his arc the most. Watching him become just a little bit less panic-y and a little more confident in who he was, in no small part because of his family and friends supporting him...that’s the kind of stuff I am soooooo happy kids of today can see. And also adults, there were gems in these episodes that we all could’ve learned from.

Now for the messy part, which is these ships. The easy one is Elena/Emilio. I figured they were gonna be a thing from minute one but then the show kept that off the radar till practically the very end so here’s to them ig. Oh, and Joey Feldstein sucks, but we knew that already.

Imma just go right out and say it: I’d rather ship Bobby/CJ. Bobby has grown a lot, and I think a lot of that was because of him building up the comfort to put himself out there to CJ, and also a lot of that was because Liam put their friendship on the back burner for Jada. No shade.

And Liam is a good *friend*. But now that Bobby’s in a relationship with someone that he genuinely likes, and who genuinely likes him, I don’t see the immediate need to burn that for someone that he’s spent months atp trying to appreciate as just a friend and nothing more (or so he thinks).

But the show threw a Cartero curveball at the end there, and that was another good scene. Danny decides he’s just gonna tell ALL of Bobby’s business, and the truth is written all over Bobby’s face. And Liam knows. And in that moment Bobby knows Liam knows. Matter of fact, a lot of Bobby’s scenes had some damn good subtext. 

So the million dollar question: Assuming Liam now knows that Bobby liked him, how does he feel about that information? He did seem a little jealous earlier. I would say....I’m not too pressed about that answer, because to be honest I’m very scared about this show’s survival chances and the show ended with Bobby being where I’d prefer he be. 

I enjoyed this season more than the first, which I’m happy about because it seems that everything sophomore slumps these days. But in case Disney drags their feet with this renewal, I would have those petitions for Paramount Plus on the ready. That is the service to direct your energy towards, CBS production and all. OR maybe Disney actually won’t play games and we can see Elena’s first political office/Cartero messiness/GabiSam proposals/DaniCamilla weddings/ElenaEmilio.

1. Favorite episode: Stand Tall. This one is from last month - day seven of jatp week. I just had a lot of fun editing it, and I think it turned out nice!

2. It’s a whole...process. I drew this doafp comic a few months after season 1 as a way to appreciate Bobby’s gay storyline, and the process it took for him to figure that part of himself out. Not only am I really proud of the line art (particularly the first and second panels), but I think the use of the rainbow line - which I included to guide our eyes through the composition - was a nice touch. This is still one of my favorite fanarts I’ve done!

3. Nightime tennis court confession. This one is another Bobby/cartero comic, which I made for doafp appreciation week. I wanted to draw this moment for a long time, but I was always a little hesitant because I didn’t really know what it would look like? Plus, I have very little experience coloring dimly lit scenes. So this comic definitely took a while to get the colors right, and while it’s nowhere near perfect, I’m still really proud of this one - especially because it got me out of my comfort zone!

4. HSMTMTS lyric headers. I made this all the way back in January, which feels like forever ago. I designed each one in such a way that it either related to the lyrics themselves or the general vibe I got from the song. I really like what I did with the last two: I crossed out the word “old” and put stairs beside the word “new” to illustrate Nini’s first steps into her next venture. And for the last one, I illustrated dots and a heart ( . . . heart . . .) to illustrate Ricky and Nini’s love being brief and “just for a moment” in time, before they leave the stage and everything's back to normal. I had a lot of fun just thinking in terms of simple graphics, typography, and color.

5. Katara. This drawing is from my main blog, but I wanted to include it because I’m so proud of it. This was the first drawing I made on my new laptop, which meant that I couldn’t use the drawing program I normally used. Also I had to visualize how her character would look realistically (like, not as a cartoon) so that was a fun challenge. Her cheeks turned out redder than I expected haha, but I still really like this one :)

ok i wanted to make this a fic but i truly don’t know how to start writing it so this is how i imagine cartero becomes canon for doafp week day 2

mid season 3 camilla and danielle’s wedding

bobby was supposed to bring CJ as his date but CJ ended up not being able to make it for some reason

bobby was like damn and he remembered that camilla had said he could invite all his friends but he didn’t because he felt like it’d be awkward so he only invited cj but now that he can’t go he needs another plus one bc seating charts whatever

he decides to invite liam as he’s a little afraid nanny and ziggy may not be the best wedding attendees

liam is like ok i can make that work

the ceremony is beautiful obviously camilla was not about to have a dull wedding

the party is a lot of fun too, he and liam kind of just chat until liam ends up pulling bobby onto the dance floor and he’s a little embarrassed and flustered at first but then they’re having a good time

and then a slow song comes on

liam: may i have this dance?

bobby: oh, i’m, i don’t really know how to dance

liam: that’s ok, i don’t either. but i’ve seen enough movies it’s just like a bunch of swaying

bobby: haha yeah i’m idk

liam: come on, just one dance

bobby thinks about it a second and then a smiles slips his face and he accepts the hand liam had reached out to him

and it’s a little awkward for a minute but then liam starts up a conversation again

liam: i can’t believe camilla didn’t make you guys learn how to dance for her wedding

bobby: oh i think there was a dance lesson but i didn’t go

liam: why not? didn’t you expect to dance

bobby shrugs: i don’t know. guess i didn’t think about it too much.

liam: well, i actually lied. my grandma taught me and my brothers how to slow dance when we were kids. i could teach you now if you want?

bobby: yeah, why not.

so then liam is teaching bobby how ti dance and they’re having a good ole time

here’s the kicker

cj shows up. whatever reason he had to not be able to go changed and he managed to get into the afterparty

bad news tho, he sees bobby and liam dancing. and he really didn’t think much of it until he really saw the look on bobby’s face.

he just turns around and leaves

the next day or a few days later or something cj asks bobby to hangout and bobby is like yeah !

bobby meets up with cj and immediately notices something is off and is like what’s up?

cj: yk how i wasn’t able to make it to the wedding?

bobby nods

cj: well the thing changed and i made it to the after party. danielle came to see me at the front and let me into the party, she said one more wasn’t gonna hurt anything. anyways, i walked in and saw you and liam dancing

bobby: oh

cj: i mean, i didn’t really care, it’s a wedding people dance. but. the look on your face while you were dancing with him. (cj pauses as he thinks back to it).

bobby: no it’s not like that, i don’t even think of liam like that anym-

(bobby catches himself before he finishes the word but cj already knows. he’s had a feeling for a while probably a bunch of built up subtext from prior s3 episodes)

cj: listen, i like you a lot but i’m leaving for college soon and honestly, i just don’t think you’ve ever gotten over him. i just don’t think we were meant to work out bobby.

(in my head he says something ab liam liking him too i just don’t know where it fits here)

bobby is sad and whatever but to sum up they end on good terms maybe a goodbye kiss just for gay rights yk

anyways upset bobby can’t sleep so he goes for a walk and finds liam at the tennis courts

they do the whole what are you doing here dance thing and they say their excuses and bobby tells him that he and cj broke up

liam: oh. man that sucks, i’m sorry.

bobby: it’s chill i guess. i had a feeling it’d happen at some point. usually the sophomore and the senior aren’t meant to be.

liam: you’re still allowed to be upset tho.

bobby: i know. the crazy thing is he said he thinks…. he thinks i like you.

liam: …oh

bobby: yeah. crazier than that he thinks you like me. i tried to tell him we’re just friends but—

liam: i do.

bobby stops and looks at him: what.

liam: I do, like you.

bobby: …oh. since when?

liam: end of freshman year? maybe? but you had just gotten with cj so. i tried to get over it but. (liam shrugs)

bobby doesn’t really know what to do with himself. he does notice that the overhead lights from the tennis court are creating a halo effect around liam. he notices that they’re standing kind of far apart. he notices he’s feeling a lot of things, he just can’t pinpoint what it is. joy? sadness? fear?

liam: sorry, i shouldn’t have said anything, you just got out of a relationship— pretend i didn’t say anything—

bobby: liam?

liam: yeah?

bobby: can i kiss you.

liam: i- like right now?

(bobby nods)

liam: um. yeah, yeah you can, yes.

and then bobby is kissing his middle school crush and at first it’s quick and uncertain and confusing. but the second they stop and look into each other’s eyes, another kiss begins, much more comfortable and now an answer to a question they’ve both been dying to know for a very long time.

and there’s probably some more drama but that’s as far as i got. thank u happy doafp week
