Hey guys I’ve been meaning to do this for a while because over my little Tumblr hiatus I played a ton of different games and one of the most phenomenal I tried out was definitely this one, an indie game called Heart Fragment!!! It’s being released in “books”, with books 1 and 2 already being released and books 3 and the finale being in progress. You can get it on itch.io and Steam (I linked the itch.io page above) and there’s a guide on Steam for all endings, good and bad. And the developer has their own Tumblr where you can check out development, ask questions and all that jazz at @heartfragment

The main reason I wanna give this game some spotlight is because I don’t think it gets the love it deserves and if you play and see all the work the developer and the rest of the people who contributed to the game put it, I think you’ll agree.

The link will give you a general idea of what the story is about and I think it’s a game best enjoyed with as few spoilers as possible but let me try to explain. You play as Xani, a teen who’s trying to live their life after the tragic loss of their mother as a child, when their life takes a sudden swerve thanks to chance encounters and the reveal that there’s something far more to what their mother was doing that Xani was unaware of. And that Xani themself may not be just a regular teenager.

Despite the fantastical sounding premise, and there are several fantasy-eqsue moments depending on the route you play, the main focus of the game is Xani growing and the relationships they form with the people around them following an especially traumatic early game incident, with focus placed on the character whose route is being played. But make sure to keep your eyes peeled because there are several mysteries as to what is truly going on which will be fully answered by the final book. I found it fun trying to keep track of everything and craft my own theories! You’ll definitely be scratching your head at points and don’t worry, for each route there are some questions left unanswered on purpose. It’s a ton of fun!!!

It’s a visual novel style game, and for the record you don’t HAVE to form a romantic relationship with the character of the route you’re on. Everyone has romantic and platonic endings (with one having only platonic endings with Xani thanks to the background between the the two). There are tons of choices to be had throughout the game that affect Xani’s tone, the endings you’re on, and so on and so forth. It’s honestly a ton of fun trying to figure things out without a guide but I personally needed one for sure to get the endings I wanted. Speaking of endings, Book 1 stars the routes for Kay and Clive. Kay has two romantic, two platonic, and four bad endings. Clive has two romantic, two platonic, and six bad endings. Book 2 stars the routes for Shannon and Lana. Shannon has two romantic, two platonic, and technically 5 bad endings. Lana has one familial good ending with several variations based on your relationship with some of the other characters and one bad ending.

You may have noticed I’m not talking about any of the characters but that’s because I’d start gushing if I did and that would inevitably lead to me accidentally spoiling something and I really do feel this is a game best played without being spoiled as to what’s going on! Just know that by the end I ADORED all four of the characters whose routes have been released with all their good sides and flaws, Xani is incredibly enjoyable as a protagonist and watching their growth is great, and there are a ton a interesting side characters to be met, and I am very interested in certain characters who will not get their time in the sun until the later books are released.

The game features some beautiful artwork, really enjoyable music, and partial voice acting by a cast of phenomenal VAs. It really is a treat!

Now the last thing I need to get into. WARNINGS. This game does have horror related elements in there. As someone who has a VERY low threshold for handling horror stuff I think it’s manageable, and there’s nothing like screamers or the like. But there are some unsettling elements. I will try to list what I can but it may be better to shoot the developer an ask to clarify. So this game has depictions of or talks about: depression, paranoia, unhealthy/abusive relationships, death/murder, questioning of one’s memories and/or their reality (by Xani and sometimes by other characters), sudden images (no screamers and the images in question aren’t graphic but may be accompanied by a sudden musical cue), screen shaking, sudden autoscrolling text, a few unsettling images. I think that’s all the main stuff but like I said I may have forgotten to write down something, so it’s best to double check!

So yeah, I hope my post does help this game at least a little more love! I’ve played it since the demo was released and it’s just been a blast the whole time. I’m eagerly awaiting the release of book 3 and the finale!

Dear mun, this probably should be a munday question but I am too impatient to wait: What do you think about the fact that probably in every iteration of Sona she is basically always the curviest woman around? Like does it affect you in your way you think about her? Or does it annoy you that sometimes it reduces her to "musician with a big ass and a massive rack" or anything along those lines? Or is it an absolute nonfactor? Maybe something you even additionally like about her?

// Well I mean, since it’s a question ABOUT Sona then it’s fine XD Munday would imply it’s about me! But hm. I’m of several minds about this sort of question.

When I started RPing as Sona, it was a very spontaneous decision I made several years ago in a roleplay chatroom that happened to have a League of Legends channel. Before then I’d never played a pre-established character. The idea seemed weird to me that people would even want or think they could RP as a character someone else had made and written out. It felt presumptuous. But being in a bad place in my life at the time and desperate to try anything new and find any kind of happiness, I made a new account and picked my main in LoL to play as: which at the time was Sona. I loved her play style in the game and I was pretty exclusively playing as her.

So initially I enjoyed Sona’s character for a lot of reasons that had nothing to do with how she looked. If anything, her look was kind of a problem. She’s basically a copy of Miku Hatsune. Even her whole thing about being mute as opposed to being a Vocaloid that sings and her theme of music is pretty obvious.

And beyond that, the whole blue-haired pigtail thing? A bit hard to take seriously!

When it comes to Sona’s figure as well, there’s totally a difference between fanon and canon. The community over the years would have to believe she’s s t a c k e d. While her chest certainly isn’t small, I would like to point out that Janna’s model actually has her chest jiggle. (Fun fact: Sona and Janna both have the same VA) Though it’s also hard to deny even glancing at, say, Muse Sona’s insane cleavage on her model. Like, woof. Those puppies are packed in there. As for her other curves, I don’t think we need to go into detail about DJ Sona and the massive booty.

But the models in-game have a variety of reasons why they’re designed the way they are. They have to be made with visibility, recognition, silhouette, and camera angle taken into account. There’s a rhyme and reason for most decisions why models look the way they do, and lately they’ve gotten a lot better and more detailed as well. Sona’s a bit mid-level by now I guess? She’s ‘newer’ than some still old champs since her VU, but graphical progress is moving very quickly in League.

I say this because there’s also the official art and splash arts to take into account. In most of Sona’s splash art I’d say she’s curvy, but not outrageously so. And she’s certainly not as thick as I tend to draw her.

On that subject: I’m a plus sized person myself. When I draw females I tend to go a little overboard on the waist and hips because that’s the kind of figure I have myself. ‘Plus size’ isn’t just one particular ‘look’ either; people gain weight in a variety of ways, and plus size can also just come down to being a very tall or broad person as well. In reality, I very much doubt Sona would qualify as plus size. She’s small and slim. While I would like it if she were a little softer and rounder, perhaps, it doesn’t make me like her any more or less as a character.

TL;DR while I do think a lot about Sona’s appearance (probably due to being an artist and drawing her a lot), it doesn’t actually effect my perception of her that much. The argument could be made that if she looked different would I have been drawn to her as much, but I honestly couldn’t say. I was drawn to her play style initially, SO...

I will say, however, that just because I’m an “enlightened” individual or whatever the fuck when it comes to how Sona looks, it’s worth noting how painfully obvious it is that many fan artists... aren’t. Especially those who draw porn. I very VERY rarely look up fanart for Sona because all too often, for SOME reason, she’s relegated to some very questionable acts. I somehow suspect it has as much to do with her being mute as it does with her body shape, but that’s just my theory. Sona being mute is likely one of the most key deciding factors in how and why people portray her the way they do aside from her boy shape, tbh. Without a voice she lacks personality on a surface level. From there it’s easy to just treat her like an object. Or even “ship” her based on her disability, which is.... yeah.

As a final thought, and from a realistic and artistic perspective, I don’t think people really realize how different people can look in different clothes. Sona’s skins tend to have her in close-fitting clothes on top and more wide gowns on the bottom (except for DJ, which leads to the whole headcanon for me that she’s hiding it all under that skirt). But if you put her in a sports bra and some baggy clothes? Suddenly she’d look a LOT different. What you wear and how you wear it can make all the difference in presentation. Makeup as well is like that.

WABAS2017 in Vélez-Blanco 

From November 4 to 6 2017, a group of writers and bloggers from around Spain gathered for WABAS2017 in Vélez-Blanco. For two days they enjoyed presentations and each other’s company at the group’s sixth annual retreat. Previous retreats have been held in Valencia, Malaga, Granada, Antequera and Valladolid.

WABAS (Writers And Bloggers About Spain) began life as a small but proactive Facebook Group. Its members all had one thing in common – they all produced written content about Spain in one form or another. Since that date, the scope of the Group has expanded and now included people that are based in Spain but may not perhaps write about it. However, the focus remains the same – to actively support each other, providing a trusted and honest place where we can help each other in business and personally. I have been a proud member of WABAS for four years now and have made some amazing friends and business contacts, many of whom I have met offline too.

The retreats began in 2013 and consist of some classroom time with various members contributing workshops and presentations, amply packaged in between some serious social time! This year was to be no exception, with the gathering kicking off on the Friday evening with drinks and tapas at a couple of the town’s hostelries.

Alan and I had volunteered to host this year’s retreat in Vélez-Blanco, the gorgeous little mountaintop town that we call home.

For me personally, it was the first time I’d attended a WABAS event (although Alan had been before), and I was extremely excited about meeting up with this people that had become close to my heart and so supportive during the last few years. After the success of this one, we have promised that either Alan, I, or both of us will be at every event in the future. Alcala de Henares (just outside Madrid) has been suggested as a potential location for WABAS2018.

We gathered in the Plenary room at the Town Hall at 9am the following morning, eager to get started.

A whole range of topics was discussed – everything from “Be more Dog” to “Productivity Apps and Hacks” plus “The Attention Economy” and “The Power of the Network.” We had presentations and we had group interaction. Unfortunately (due to technical breakdowns and a lunch taking way longer than we expected) a couple of members were unable to present – our heartfelt thanks got to Diana Berryman and Alicia Shelley who kindly volunteered to save their slots for another time. We listened, we talked, we laughed, we debated. Oh and we swatted lots of flies too!

What was really apparent was the wide range of skills across the Group. We also enjoyed a tour of the town (courtesy of Dietmar), taking in the castle, the Moorish quarter, the Water Museum and other areas of interest. This took place on the Sunday, and afterwards a few staunch remainers (and yes, I do mean it in “that” sense of the word too) met up for lunch and a few more drinkies.

To say that I was exhausted after it all is an understatement. After recent illness, I am no longer the “Elle than can bolt ten glasses of wine and a dozen shots of sambuca,” but it was good to see that one or two were able to lift the mantle on my behalf.

Both Emdal and Formann are best known as members of Lower. Emdal has lately pivoted his time around Marching Church, a band comprised of some of Copenhagen's finest, whilst Formann has been working under the guise of Yen Towers, releasing his debut 12" on Posh Isolation in early 2016 (PI 175EP). "Trespassing on intimate territory," says Emdal of their new recording, "[Performance] cuts a transparent path for everyone to come walking. The album is ultimately a joint effort to process past as well as present experiences within father son relations. In order to make things tangible, scenes are drawn from memory and merged in a shared fictional collage." Performance thrillingly presents Emdal and Formann in a new cryptically lush aspect. There is a sense that one is watching a slide show - familiarity motions like the tide in the form of acoustic instrumentation, and porous synthesized terrains are crossed with a feeling, not a map, nor a memory. As one watches, the creeping ambience comes to be less an invasive sensation and more of a gravitational pull through time itself. It's as effortless as it is disorientating, like being stalked by a relic. Propellants ascend in to the foreground from all directions. Rhythmic NO2 afterglow comes in waves in reverse. Japanese legend, Keiji Haino, meets two of Belgium's most active and valued musicians, keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin (Lilly Joel) and drummer Teun Verbruggen (Othin Spake). The Miracles Of Only One Thing is a deep and intense testimony of this meeting. Keiji Haino, without any doubt one of the most important musicians from the Japanese underground scene, is at his best, Teun Verbruggen and Jozef Dumoulin did a three-week tour in Japan in September of 2015, playing concerts as a duet, but also solo and with local musicians. One of those musicians was hero Keiji Haino, whose work has spanned rock, free improvisation, noise, percussion, psychedelic music, minimalism and drones. Besides his legendary bands Fushitsusha and Lost Aaraaff, he has worked with artists and bands like Boris, The Melvins, Jim O'Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Peter Brötzmann and Steve Noble. As for Dumoulin and Verbruggen, they are both known for their always refreshing and groundbreaking work that breaks the barriers between free improvisation, electro, jazz and more. Jozef Dumoulin is part of the duo Lilly Joel appearing recently on Sub Rosa with What Lies in the Sea (SR 416CD, 2015). The three teamed up for a studio recording and a recorded live-show. Out of all the material, they distilled an album that reflects both the excitement of the new bond as well as the deep and vast sonic landscapes that their joined forces laid bare. On the one hand, there's Cheveu, the French three-member band, whose soundtrack has never ceased to question music codes by exceeding various genres and pushing back their limits. On the other hand, you have Group Doueh, a Sahrawi band from the Sahara desert (Dakhla). Their music spans across many styles and hammers tradition with unprecedented finds. In between both their remote musical universes dwells a sound clash. It embodies the meeting between two arts of living music day by day, two ways of transmitting, of enchanting the world or refusing to do so, of exploring the repertoire as well as tradition and creation, two visions of the collective - the list of reasons why these guys should have probably never met or could have failed to get along is quite extensive. This piece was recorded in two weeks in Dakhla in January 2016. The mere project seemed like a surreal challenge, something that was almost impossible to achieve and for which time was going to hold major importance. It brought about a telluric big bang, an atomic creation, a story of primitive energies setting the record straight in the whole world. The music on Transparent is genuinely unsettling and disturbing, with a more primal Industrial feel than the Coil album which followed; Scatology (1984). Donadio, to Diagonal; a no pretenses rave set built minimal and raw for hard worked 'floors. The label's Cleveland, Ohio ambassador has cut out any sentimentality and gone straight for the rave jugular with no concession to ascetic consistency, knocking up one of his fiercest examples of brutalist funk in the process. It's Prostitutes' third and most substantial release for Diagonal, a swaggering and unzipped affirmation of the styles on 2013's Shatter And Lose and Ecstasy, Crashing Beats And Fantasy from 2015 (DIAG 015EP), and clearly catches the label's close ally in the mood for getting wasted. Prostitutes' Dance Tracksz are schooled with the sort of street knowledge and bluntness that perhaps comes from life as a techno-punk in a blue collar industrial city such as Cleveland, OH: the bullish, PCP-style hardcore bookends of "Ah Yeah" and "War Goes On" say their piece in no uncertain terms, whilst "Bottle Smashing" spits pure industrial street funk and "Prey" deals in riot-inciting jungle-techno. Even the album's sole moment of sentimentality, "I Luv U Bruv" - a gesture of affection for his label boss, Powell - is delivered with an acrid lash of electro-techno, but at least you know he means it. In a sound world spoilt for choice, Prostitutes' refusal of shiny tricks is admirable and almost subversive in the face of hands-in-the-air breakdowns, but there's something about the way he wrenches out every last drop of rusty, jacking funk from his machines that leaves no doubt about Dance Tracksz effect at close quarters. It features Steve Reich's Drumming performed by acclaimed Brooklyn based quartet, Sō Percussion, and includes a 3+ minute version of Clapping Music, performed by Steve Reich and Sō Percussion. Drumming was premiered in 1971 at the Museum of Modern Art. It was the first large-scale piece that Reich wrote and is considered one of the first minimalist masterpieces. 45 years on, it continues to be a fascinating piece of work that keeps listeners intrigued and impressed.
