Lucidus Characters Redesign/WIPS

Originally much skinnier. Arguably he's still a little on the slimmer side, but i mean the guy used to be really skinny back when i was using bad anatomy.

Skin is now darker. Originally he was on the lighter side, but while testing out colors, the darker colors just ended up sitting next to each other really nicely.

Hair is longer. Originally it was cut short; why? Idk; could have been bullying or a hate crime or his dad being a racist prick or an emotional meltdown, I have no idea, I never got that far. Ultimately, in the end, my brain leaned more towards his Native Choctaw roots and it felt wrong to let it be cut short. Plus, after playing around with it, his thick mane just looks nicer.

Hair is now dark brown. Originally he had jet black hair with blue streaks. But next to Cadence and Jacob, who also had black hair, it wasn't very distinct from them. I mAY give him streaks again at some point? But this works as a general default for now.

Has a purple/brown/yellow/blue color palette. Originally it was blue and white, but that left him indistinct from Jacob, and especially considering they're dating/best friends (depending on the AU) they just blended together too much. So although only the purple is seen here right this second, I envision gold/yellow and shades of blue being used later down the road.

d i m p l e s. He didn't originally have them, but I felt compelled, and they oddly worked for him. (Especially once I figured out how to do it properly.

He used to have a kind of skaterboy/grunge look to him; now that's generally restricted for performances, and his casual clothes are a lot more down-to-earth.

Jacob Rosario

Boy beefed up. I mean it, even ignoring my inability to draw male anatomy, the guy was meant to be a LOT skinnier than he is now. #CertifiedTwink. Ultimately, because what he does outside of his schooling is very physically taxing, and his naturally low body temperature making a lack of muscle/fat content dangerous, I decided it only made sense for him to have built up a little bit of muscle. He's still a little on the lean/athletic side, but his shoulders and chest are much broader.

HEY LOOK I FIGURED OUT HOW TO GIVE HIM A MASCULINE JAWLINE. HE DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL ANYMORE. I WIN.

Hair is a little looser. Admittedly this was mostly the result of his original hairstyle looking too close to Yun Li's from People are Weird, and I had to do something else to give them a visual distinction. It also gives him something of a visual parallel to Cadence (who I'll show off when i have a sketch I'm satisfied with).

His clothing style overall used to be universally business/casual, since he was originally inspired by Akechi from Persona. But ultimately, considering the shift to him dating someone a lot more laidback, I decided to leave his business clothing to school/the court room, and letting his casual clothes be a little more athletic, stylish and comfortable. It's not uncommon to see him in turtlenecks or those shirts with the light necks and no sleeves--I FORGET WHAT THEY'RE CALLED BUT YOU KNOW THE KIND.

bored rn so here's highlights from my concept art folder

i can't tell if ciel is majorly different but this is definitely beta colors for nila; ig she was more purplish and light colored, and originally SHE would be the one with dual colored hair

sage color tests! i think sage itself is a very greenish-gray color so sage's color scheme reflected that. i know this should be a mix of me and my buddy (purpleheartemoji) playing around with colors

oriole! it was my buddy (purpleheartemoji) who designed him first i think, and funnily enough he wouldve been a blonde lmao. i didnt wanna rely on a brown/orange color scheme TOO much bc the pyrrhics are all meant to have a little gray in their color scheme; granted, i redesigned him again later but the vibes were There

alpine i wanted to definitely be a boy since i didnt wanna imply that pink souls were only female, but i also didnt want him to just look like a male rose. i dont think he went through MAJOR design changes since i knew exactly what kind of vibe i wanted to go for, but it's hilarious to see how many color palettes i used to make him

aureolin! once again having the gray + yellow color scheme, though it seemed to definitely take us a bit to figure out how to do it lol. i'm pretty sure my buddy (purpleheartemoji) also designed him too, but it took both of us to figure out colors

amethyst! i'm very attached to her arc 2 outfit but was constantly blanking out with arc 3 designs. i think i'm happy with the end result (right side of the image) when using her arc 2 outfit as a basis

catching up to the present, here's tarum! there's def a few more outfit tests i did in pen + paper, but the file here was meant to be about his color palette

it was very difficult to find a solid definition of "indigo", but i managed to find two that i felt were pretty pleasing! the top palettes are desaturated from the original pic, oop. also, i was debating on tarum's skin tone since he's based off of nox rainbowflare from ETSS, who has albinism but lives in an area that worships the sun. my friend (yellowheartemoji) suggested a darker skin tone since it let their cool colored outfit pop out better :]

i asked for color opinions in a discord server i'm in for tarum, but since colors are subjective i tried to help by putting the cool spectrum (plus violae...?) into one file. i introduced them as "blue, indigo, cool purple, warm purple", and they suggested warming up violae's palette to be a little more distinct from amethyst :o

here's a test on tarum's weapon! very simplistic to draw in ms paint but i wanted a full reference anyway

Part of the difficulties I have with just design in general being “okay how can I make this character mine and not accidentally or unintentionally look like someone else’s” but it’s just a forever spiral of ‘everything has been done more or less.’ It’s gunna look like something to someone at some point. Nothing can be done other than just having your own style and differences/nuances to go “ya that’s mine.” Plus just always nice to see people coming together with similar ideas and talking to one another and gushing over similar interests. But as far as design I try to picture them by face first then down. From how do they smile to their personality or vibe I want to portray. From there it’s about body then potential abilities/skills/career whathaveyou then build up a mini background then expand. Sometimes a world is created around them or they are just another addition to something I’ve already made. Sometimes I get a head of myself and think of too many things at once and I need to do better at writing them down rather than keeping it in my head and eventually losing it. XD the hazards of memory.

It would have to be Vivienne. I love vivienne. She’s that nice brain rot I can fall back on and indulge in different alternate universes while main bigger main stories and hers are taking a back burner. It’s just nice to have a very freestyle and adaptive character to bounce around with.

My most difficult character to draw or write would maybe have to be Alraeon. He’s got a vocab list and the brains that I don’t have and imagined him having.

Art or talking to friends to splurge ideas with or listen and also media usually to like movies or games usually help light a fire in me to do stuff.

Dr. Lancet, he is a doctor that runs his own clinic in the lower ends of the city with affordable services for those in need and living in poverty. I created him maybe two or three years ago. He was actually an adopt and his design was a bit different. He has a glass like faceplate and slightly different structure and color placement but still same palette.

6. Lancet usually goes thru difficult decisions as a medic/nurse and doctor all in one from how to save a person’s life from human to alien to running his own business and even having interpersonal relations with some unsavory patients that test his patience too. He’s got his own baggage and sins but he is rather blunt with a soft heart at least even if he tries to hide it under a reserved mask. Hard to express without a face but words and hand gestures do get his points across. But he will face difficult things unflinchingly and just soldier through them like a chore.

7. Either his face or his legs. He sounds like a horse coming down some hallways with the way his feet are shaped. Lol

8. I want him perceived as not only as a caring individual who does good work but someone who has some demons that he can’t face alone. For all the help he does he tries to mask a lot of his pain and self hatred. He’s not a very sharing guy.

Well 8 kind of answered that but I would say his lack of openness and maybe a bit of a control freak about his business and the way some operations are done since he was programmed to do things a certain way. He is capable of learning a new method by research or on the fly from someone too. He may argue with the latter throughout on effectiveness but if it works it works then it’s just added to his options list.
