PLS I HATE THE MARAUDERS FANDOM I NEED TO HEAR ABOHT THE MISOGYNY IN IT 😭

I was about six when I became a Harry Potter fan. I have watched the films countless times, and did several re-reads of the books. I have engaged with the fandom in online spaces, on and off, for over 10 years now. I have seen the fandom in many different phases and I will say this - the fandom has always been incredibly misogynistic and paid the female characters dust. But it's insane how, as the years went by, we managed to regress even further rather than to make any progress and be better. 

The first point is the overall lack of attention the female characters receive. I am aware that the four main characters in the era are men. So, Sirius, Remus and James (I am excluding Peter from this because no one really gives a fuck) will inevitably get more attention and more content compared to everyone else and so will any ship involving them. However, there is no excuse for male characters who were barely mentioned and irrelevant to be getting more attention than characters like Lily, who is arguably more important to the series than someone like James. Furthermore, the fandom loves to pick up names from the books and flesh them out, give them lore and presence and that’s wonderful, I love that, I do that. But why is Evan Rosier, a known Death Eater, more popular in the fandom now than women like Marlene and Dorcas, who we know were incredibly capable witches that fought against Voldemort? If you don’t think this has anything to do with misogyny, I don’t know what to tell you.

Second point has to do with the overall treatment of women and wlw ships. I am so tired of seeing headcanons and fanfics where the women are treated like absolute shit to further mlm ships. Why are you writing Mary being SA-ed and having it covered up by Regulus? Why are you writing Remus and Sirius using Mary as an object? Why are you writing about James cheating on his pregnant wife with his little Death Eater ex-boyfriend during a war where people like her are being persecuted? And most importantly, WHY IS A GIGANTIC PORTION OF THE FANDOM GLORIFYING THIS SHIT AND COMING OUT OF READING THESE FICS AVID SHIPPERS OF THESE COUPLES? Stop using the female character to add a little bit of drama in your mlm fics and then throw them to the side when that’s resolved. 

And now about the wlw ships. Let me just say, I am a bisexual woman, who loves men and women just the same. A lot of your wlw ships are nothing more than smoke screens to 1) get women out of the way of your mlm ships or/and 2) try to keep a facade of caring about the girls and about anything other than mlm ships. Because you don’t talk about them, you don’t engage with content about them, you don’t create content for them. Especially with Lily, the only times many of you talk about lesbian Lily is always relating to your favourite mlm ships that conveniently involves her husband. It’s bullshit. It’s cynicism and I can’t stand it. 

So many people in this fandom sit on their little bubble, exclusively talking about men, with no interest whatsoever for the women but refuse to think about why that is. Why is it that I have absolutely no interest in any female characters?

It's misogyny because, unlike what some people think, misogyny is not shouting out from the rooftops that you hate women. It's the little things that we all have rooted inside us that makes us look and treat women a certain way without often realising we are doing something problematic.

i feel like i have a lot of opinions that are popular opinions, and fuck terfs, but nonetheless:

regulus black would have been the perfect example of a brave slytherin that albus was named after

arthur, hagrid, or remus could have served as other father figures instead of albus; tell me hagrid would not burst into tears upon hearing his child was named after him? also, arthur, for both ginny and harry!

i read the occasional drarry fic but it has to be very, very well-written; or, at least, it has to have the understanding that draco has to go through some sort of redemption, either through atoning for his own actions, or an au in which he already has—some fics make him the next-gen spy, a bit like snape

uh, draco and dudley are perfect foils, and people would simp after dudley if he was as “conventionally attractive” as tom felton

dudley had more of a canon redemption arc than draco did

fatphobia is rampant in the series—villains are the vast majority of fat rep, and even good fat characters like molly or hagrid still have faults (hagrid is “big and dumb,” a bit like dudley tbh, and molly is kind of just? a Mother? like that’s her defining character trait. nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom if that’s what you want, of course, it’s just that molly didn’t have much of a personality outside of her children until the later books.)

misogyny too—molly was so mean to hermione in the fourth book and fleur in the sixth, ginny was mean to fleur too, hermione gives off “not like other girls” energy especially concerning lavender and pavarti

albus probably considered that sirius was innocent but decided to leave him in azkaban, even though he didn’t know for sure; albus probably also laid out the traps for the stone with eleven-year-olds in mind, just in case harry wanted to try and prove himself; albus was behind a lot of the machinations, and at the very least he left a child to be abused for years on end

unpopular opinion

I don’t see his behaviours toward snape like a lot of the fandom does. Like while it’s bad, I think they’re literally playing out the larger wizarding war within the context of the school. If you’re about to graduate into a war, where there’s perceived to be clear divides between the “good guys” & “bad guys” it makes sense you’d think it’s morally justifiable to be like, hexing the ‘bad guys’ between classes. It’s weird the fandom is like “yes, killing death eaters once you’re 18″ “no, being mean to death eaters in school when you’re 17″.(bc, some of those kids including snape were legitimately about to leave school and become death eaters and were open about it). IM JUST SAYING, the circumstances within which they were at school make the situation more complex then ‘yeah he bullied him’. Also, this may be semi popular/unpopular probably depends on which circles of the fandom you run in.

okay okay I have this really great idea for a stony fic and I rlly want to write it!! but im not sure if people would read it? I wanna write an identity porn fic where no one knows that tony is iron man but everyone knows steeb is cap. bc steve is a cinnamon roll he volunteers with a construction crew after battles to fix the damages. Steve and Tony hate each other btw. (hmmm. tony “hates” steve ofc. rlly hates him. sometimes he looks pics of steve in really tight tops up and projects them onto his shower wall. but no one needs to know that.) Well, Tony makes the construction crew come to his mansion (stark tower? idk her) and steve is LIVID how dARE the billionaire use VOLUNTEERS to rebuild his stupid mansion??? (tony didn’t mean to! he messed up some paper work bc pepper was busy in california and accidentally sent his paid-for construction crew to the battle damages and the volunteers [who always end up “winning the lottery” or “finding a brand new car parked in their drive way with mountain bikes for the kids and a playstation loaded into the back” btw. except steve bc hes a dick.] ... anyway, tony made a mistake, but he can’t very well fix it bc technically it IS battle damages and he needs to be the Arsehole Billionaire so people continue to Hate him so he can be iron man in peace bc he has some issues and thinks he only has worth when he’s in the suit and doesn’t realise that his strategy of making the public hate tony stark is a form of harming himself fjfjfjfjfjfh. so,,, he just sits there and watches steve fix his mansion. well, they start talking and blah blah tony helps oh no! tony is a nice person! oh no! steve really likes how tony looks when theres dust in his hair! oh no!! steve is falling for him!!!
