â itâs the end of the world. youâre craving a human connection, and discover that the winter soldier has a more open heart than people give him credit for.
pairing: bucky barnes x female reader warnings: no real warnings - mentions of a panic attack and some harsh language. disclaimer: i donât own marvel or bucky. the plot is mine. please donât post my work on any other sites (including ao3) without my permission! reblogs are fine and welcomed! authorâs note: this is my first time writing anything marvel-related. pls be gentle!
Horns are blaring on the streets as bumper to bumper traffic struggles to get out of Manhattan.
Whatâs the point, you think bitterly, your mind an endless loop of panic and resignation. The world is ending. Another alien attack, and no sign of help in sight. People were buzzing about seeing Captain America on the subway, but what the hell would he have been doing down there?
You press your phone to your ear one more time, trying to get through to your parents. Itâs hopeless, you know, but you canât help but try. The line goes dead. You sigh, feeling tears build up behind your eyes.
Suddenly, a hand grabs your shoulder, and you bite back a scream, whirling around, ready to throw a punch.
âWait!â
Itâsâ youâre starting to think the world already ended, because itâs The Winter Soldier standing in front of you, blue eyes blazing with urgency andâ you donât know what else. Panic, you guess.
âWait, sorry, I didnât mean to startle you.â
A disbelieving laugh bubbles out of you, âStartle me?!â
âYou need to get inside. Anywhere. Find shelter.â
âWhat the fuck are you doing down here?â You ask, gesturing around you. âThe world is ending and youâreâ trying to make sure people are inside when they go up in flames?â
âYou need to get off the street.â He says quietly, meeting your eyes. âThis isnât the end. But it could be if you donât find somewhere safe.â
âBucky!â A voice shouts and you both look up, seeing a man with sandy blonde hair perched on the roof of the building in front of you. âTimeâs up. Gotta move.â
âWe have these comms for a reason,â Bucky mutters to himself. âCome on,â he says, dragging you by your elbow into the empty bank building. Thereâs a few people inside, huddled in a corner, and they look up with wide eyes before scattering at the sight of Bucky Barnes. He rolls his eyes.
âWhatâs the difference between being in here or out there?â You ask, ripping your arm from his grasp. âWeâre all going to die anyway.â
His eyes narrow a tiny bit. âYouâre not going to die.â
âThis is worse than last time,â you point out. This battle has been going on for nearly a week, the invasion having started even before that. âYou and your friends canât stop it.â
âYouâre panicking.â He points out, cocking an eyebrow. He looks around you, out into the street, like heâs looking for someone.
âNo shit!â You laugh, almost hysterically. âHow is this happening. Iâmâ oh god, I donât want to die.â You feel your breath start to speed up, but you canât calm down. âI donât want to die, but I canât do anything about it, and Iâm not even going to die at home with my family! Iâm going to die here in some credit union with The Winter fucking Soldierââ
Bucky is saying something to you, but in your blind panic, you donât hear any of it.
You also donât see the look of determination that crosses his face, or the deep breath he takes right before he leans in and kisses you, hard.
To say youâre shocked is an understatement. You freeze against him, your breath feeling bottled up inside your throat, but his touch softens just a fraction, and itâs like warmth starts seeping into your veins. You practically melt against him, your shaky breath leaving you on a soft sigh, and a shiver runs up your spine at the feeling of his hand gently pressing against the small of your back.
You feel as if you were meant to be kissing Bucky Barnes for all of eternity.
He makes a soft noise, something like surprise tinged with satisfaction, and it makes you want to cling to him and never let go.
The floor shakes under your feet, quite literally, and the two of you break apart with a start. He runs a hand through his hair, looking at you sheepishly, though his steel blue eyes are laser-focused on you.
âYou were freaking out.â He says with a shrug, and you canât help it - you laugh. A loud laugh that has you gripping your sides.
He smiles at you, but just for a half second before his fingers go to the comms device in his ear again, his face smoothing back into seriousness. âSorry. I have to go. I-- I shouldnât have done that.â
Youâre still a little speechless, so you just shrug. â... âm not really complaining.â
He grins. âYouâre going to be fine. Itâs all going to be fine. Youâll see.â
âDonât you have to go save the world, or something?â
He takes a few steps backwards, eyes still on you. âFind somewhere safe. Donât come out until someone comes to get you.â
âNo one knows Iâm here!â
âI do,â he replies with a wink, and then heâs gone, back out onto the nearly empty street.
âWhat the fuck.â You say to yourself, but you end up doing what he says. The bank of the bank near the vault seems safe enough, you think, and despite the panic wanting to rise up in you again, you think of Bucky Barnes smile and the way he touched you, and you try to stay calm.
.
.
.
Youâre in there for almost an entire day, you think. Youâre feeling panicky again, ready to just give up and go outside to see whatâs happened and accept your fate, but thereâs the sound of footsteps nearby that stop you.
You never thought about it before, but you think hiding out in a bank was probably the stupidest idea. If anyone else survived, where else would they go to try to loot?
â... down here, if she actually listened to me, instead of--â a familiar voice says, and when you hear him, relief shoots through your veins.
You come out of your hiding spot, hands on your hips. âWho tells someone to hide in a bank when the world is ending? You just-- and I listened to you, even though this is the dumbest place--â
âThatâs her.â Bucky says, cutting you off, the grin on his face nearly a mile wide.
âI like her.â The man next to him says, coming forward to shake your hand. âSam Wilson,â he says, and you just stare at him until Bucky gets your attention.
âTold you youâd be fine,â
âNowâs really not the time to be smug--â
âActually, I think itâs the perfect time--â
âWhile you two keep flirting, Iâm going to goâŚ. Somewhere else.â Sam says, and you blush, avoiding looking at Bucky at all, because heâs just-- youâre remembering how badly you panicked the last time you saw him, and you didnât have time to be embarrassed because you thought the world was going to end.
But now--
He takes a step closer, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. âYou lived,â he says.
You barely restrain yourself from rolling your eyes. âSo did you.â
âYou know, I never got your name.â
âWhy did you come back for me?â You ask, ignoring his non-question.
He blinks. âI told you I would.â
âWhat-- what happened out there?â You ask, your brain going rapid-fire. âOh, god. I need to call my parents. I donât--â
âYouâre freaking out again.â He says, and when you look up, heâs even closer than you remember, those blue eyes pinning you in place. His hand is hovering next to your waist like he wants to touch you, but isnât sure if heâs allowed.
The world almost ended. Youâre feeling a little bold. âGuess you better shut me up,â you say flippantly, and he laughs. You decide itâs quickly becoming your favorite sound.
When he kisses you this time, itâs not a thing born out of desperation and panic. Itâs slow and sweet, like heâs savoring the feeling of his lips pressed to yours and his body pressed up against yours, and all the little sounds heâs able to draw out of you.
âThanks,â you whisper when you break away to get some air.
âAnytime, really.â He says, sounding cocky, and you decide that just wonât do.
You plant a kiss on him to rival the one he laid on you, and feel gratified when you feel his metal hand sink into your hair to tug slightly, a groan escaping his lips as they part against yours.
âAhem,â a voice clearing breaks the two of you apart with a start, and youâre glad heâs still partially holding you up, because getting caught making out by Captain America normally would make you melt into the floor until you disappeared entirely. âSorry to interrupt,â he says, his voice tinged with amusement, âBut weâve got a lot of debriefing to do. Cell service is out, mostly,â he says, looking at you, âBut weâve got the jet and we can drop you somewhere if you need to check in on anyone.â
He smiles and then heads back out the way he came, leaving you groaning in embarrassment against Buckyâs shoulder.
âYour parents,â he murmurs, and you nod in agreement.
âYeah.â After a few seconds, you smile at him. âY/N. My name, since you asked for it.â
He beams at you. âBucky. James. Whatever you want to call me, honestly.â
You blush again. âGod, there were aliens here, and youâre still-- incorrigible.â
He shrugs. âComes with the job description. Iâm used to it.â He takes a step back from you. âI gotta go. And so do you.â
You frown.
âBut--â he continues, âLet me know when youâre back in the city.â
âHow am I supposed to do that?â You ask, and he grins.
âBig tower. Itâs got an âAâ on it. You can find me there.â
You snort, rolling your eyes. âYouâre awful cocky, you know. What makes you so sure Iâm going to look you up when I get back?â
âBecause I stopped you from having a panic attack in the middle of an alien invasion. I figure that at least guarantees me a pizza date.â
The team drops you off at your parentsâ place. Theyâre fine. The world is-- mostly fine. Struggling to deal with the aftermath, but the people you love are okay, and you know you will be too.
You canât really stop thinking about a certain blue-eyed super soldier, and so when you finally come back to New York, after the trains are running again, and after things are sort of back to normal, you show up at the famous Avengers Tower, wringing your hands together with nerves.
A ding from a nearby elevator makes you look up, and the smile on his face wipes out all your previous worries.
âI was starting to think youâd forgotten about me,â he says as he gets closer, his strides sure as he walks towards you, âAnd I didnât want to assume anything, but I thought despite the circumstances, we really hit it off, but--â
You cut him off by meeting him halfway, taking his face in your hands and pressing your lips to his. The sigh he lets out is music to your ears, and his arms go around your waist instantly, pulling you as close as you can get.
âYou were freaking out,â you whisper afterwards, and his laugh rings out around you, settling into your bones.

It was a normal unordinary day at Beacon Hills High School. That sentence alone sounded weird to you. Normal wasnât something that you experienced often, so you were enjoying it.
The bell rang alerting you that your final class of the week was officially over. You wasted no time to pull your bag off the ground and rush out of the classroom. You scanned the hallway for the familiar strawberry blonde hair of your best friend. Making your way to the stairs, you tried to get a better vantage point to see over all the others.Â
Lydia was over by her locker. She seemed pinned to it by none other than Tommy Scott, a senior known for being a bit of a player. He was a grade A asshole, the human kind.Â
You pushed through the crowd of teenagers to get to your best friend before Tommy can do anything to massively stupid. Every step you made almost felt like a step backwards as you were meet with resistance from every push. Eventually you did make it through the massive crowd of teens trying to get out the building.Â
Tommy had Lydia almost trapped against her locker. He held onto the door of her locker with one hand and leaned against the wall of lockers on the other side of the girl. Lydia looked at him pained as if she was trying her best to hold her tongue. She was probably trying to hold back a quick-witted insult.
You caught her eye when you got out of the crowd of people and approached the two teens. You were able to make your way to them in a matter of seconds. Tommy was still completely unaware of your presence. He continued to talk to Lydia about some party this weekend at his place.Â
âLydia, you ready to go?â you said interrupting the Tommy. He practically screamed as he jumped at the sound of your voice. A small smile emerged from beneath the disgust on Lydiaâs face which brought a small smirk to your face. Now that Tommy wasnât blocking Lydia off you went to stand by her side as she pulled you into a hug.Â
âY/N, what a pleasure to see you,â Tommy hissed like the snake that he was. He shot daggers at you for interrupting, but that just made stand taller. Your goal for coming over was to get Lydia, but pissing off Tommy was definitely a bonus.Â
âWish I could say the same, Tommy,â you said raising your voice up an octave. You even gave  Tommy a small smirk.Â
âTommy was just telling me about a party heâs hosting tonight,â Lydia said also using a higher pitched voice. âYou should tell Y/N. She loves parties. Right, Y/N?â
âYes, of course,â you said with still high tone. âTell me about this party, Tommy.â Tommy just pursed his lips at you. Lydia reacted by wrapping her arm around you. Tommy let out a deep frustrated sigh and brought his hand to rub his face.Â
âI was just inviting Lydia here to a small party Iâm hosting tonight,â Tommy said. His shoulders were slouched and his words dragged as he talked. âIt starts at 9, my place. There will be a keg, but Iâm trying to keep it sorta small for now.â âWe will be there,â Lydia said looking to you for approval. You just gave her a sly smile in return as well as a nod.Â
âYes, we will,â you said looking back at Tommy. He pursed his lips at the two of you as head nodded.
âOkay, see you there,â he said turning and walking away. As soon as he disappeared into the thinning crowd, you turned to Lydia. You took Tommyâs place leaning against the lockers. Lydia turned to her locker to take some books out of her bag and shove them in as well as take some books out of her locker and shove them into her bag.Â
âTommy?â you said raising your eyebrows. She just rolled her eyes at you and kept moving books around. âDid he approach you or did you approach him? Do you like him now? Are you just trying to get laid? Whatâs going on Lydia?â
âNothing is going on,â Lydia said. âDo you want to go to this party or do you want to dip out and stay at my place?â
The idea of staying in with Lydia was so appealing to you. You couldnât help but want to be alone with her. She was your best friend, but she was your crush too. For that reason, you knew better than to agree to just spending time with just her.Â
The last time you had one of your just you two nights, you two had gotten massively drunk and confessed to her. You were lucky that she didnât remember anything in the morning.Â
âLetâs go to the party,â you said with an encouraging smile. âIf itâs a flop, we can just go back to your place.â
âSounds good,â She said. âIâll pick you up at 9:30?â âPerfect,â you said as you turned in the direction of your locker needing to drop some books off there. You waved to her as she headed toward the door.
You were nursing a red solo cup with bland warm beer. You werenât actually drinking it, but rather holding to make sure no one tried to give you something else. Lydia was off talking to some of her other friends as you sat with Scott and Stiles. You were sitting to the left of Scott as Stiles sat next to him on the arm of the couch.
You felt the couch dip beside you. You turned to look to see a drunk Tommy sitting next to you.  He had this shit eating grin on his face as he starred dazed ahead.Â
âDo you need something?â you asked. You were slightly amused at his demeanor.Â
âLydia is so gorgeous, ya know that?â tommy said rolling his head to look at you before rolling it back to where he was looking before. You turned to see his gaze was on a smiling Lydia on the dance floor.Â
âYeah, she is,â you said looking at her.Â
âYou are so lucky to have such a banging best friend, you know that right?â Tommy said beside you. He let out a bit of a laugh. You looked at him disapprovingly.Â
âYouâre such a pig,â you rolled your eyes at him. âYouâve been trying to get her to sleep with you for the past two months. You know thatâs never gonna happen right?â
Tommy looked shocked for a moment. You let out a stifle of laughter at the expression on his face and shook your head to return to looking at Lydia.Â
You caught her gaze, and she smiled and waved to you. You gave her a half smile before waving back to her. The smell of alcohol overwhelmed your senses. You turned to the source of the smell to see Tommyâs face really close to yours.Â
You jerked back out of disgust and shock. Your face distorted as you scrunch your nose up and furrowed your eyebrows. He lurched forward connecting his lips with yours. Your mouth was filled with the disgusting taste of beer as Tommyâs rough lips pressed against yours. Â
You yanked away from him. Tommy just leaned back laughing.Â
âWhat the hell Tommy?â you practically screamed at him. You stood up from your spot on the couch catching the attention of the two teen boys that were sitting beside you. Â They stared at you confused.Â
Tommy stood up too moving towards you. He placed his lips on yours again. You stepped backwards quickly. You raised your hand to slap him, but you couldnât bring yourself to slap him.
âWhatâs your deal Y/L/N?â Tommy said as he held his cheek in his hand. âGirls just fall all over themselves to get my attention. Here I am, offering myself to you, and you jump away from me? I give you an out to all the jokes that you like girls. I give you a chance to prove them wrong.â
âI didnât really want you to kiss me now did I?â you screamed back at him. Scott and Stiles stood behind you protectively.Â
âNow you have these lackeys backing you up, huh?â Tommy said coming at you.
He was really close to you now. It made you uncomfortable with him looming over you.Â
âTommy back off,â Lydiaâs voice rang out from beside you. The two of you whipped around to see the strawberry blonde starring Tommy down. She had left her other friends on the dance floor probably after seeing the first kiss the he planted on your lips.
âWhat is to you, Lydia?â he asked looking her up and down. âYou interested now or are you just here to defend your little girlfriend here? Thatâs what she is isnât she or is it just a one-way street? She likes you, but you donât like her. Am I right?â
âLeave her out of this,â Lydia demanded. She stood tall and held her head up high. Tommy approached her. Out of the corner of your eye you saw Scott and Stiles backed off slightly both being a bit afraid of Lydia.Â
âWhat are you going to do about it?â He said. Then he turned to back to you. He approached you and ran his fingers lightly up your arm. âShe is all talk and no bite, arenât you?â
You flinched away from him. Thatâs was the last straw for Lydia. She placed a hand on Tommyâs chest and pushed him away from you.Â
âDonât you dare touch her. If I ever see you anywhere near her, youâll have to deal with me!â Lydia said.Â
You gently took her hand in yours. She looked back at you to see the pleading look you wore on your face. She shook her head at him.Â
âYouâre not worth it,â she said before turning back to you. âletâs get out of here, okay?â
You just nodded as she pulled you outside to get in her car.
Neither of you spoke the way back to Lydiaâs house. The drive was completely silent as you waited for her to speak first.Â
When you finally pulled into her driveway, you realized that you were probably going to have to speak first. She turned off the car as you tried to gather your thoughts. The headlights turned off after a moment of the two of you just sitting there. You heard the click of Lydiaâs seatbelt followed by the shuffle of Lydia turning in her seat. You leaned your head back against the headrest and turned to look at her.Â
âLydia,â you started as she spoke too.
âListenâŚâ She said. You both stopped and waited for the other to speak. You let out a stifle of laughter as you watched her do the same.Â
âYou first,â you said gesturing for her to continue. She let a deep sigh as she looked at you.
âWhy did you have us go tonight Y/N?â Lydia said. A frown crept up onto her face. You werenât sure what to say. You took a deep breath and let it out slowly. No longer wanting to face her you turned to look out the windshield.Â
âLydia, IâŚâ you trailed off as you looked at the strawberry blonde. What were you going to say?
If you were to tell her the truth, your relationship with her as you know would be over. How could you tell her that you didnât want to be alone with her? If you made it out to be what it was then your feelings would be revealed, but if you didnât you would come off as not wanting to be around her. You were sure that if you were to lie to her she would sniff you out right away.Â
âWhat Tommy said back thereâŚâ she said slowly. Her words eloquently flowed out of her mouth. âIs it true? Do you like me?â
You were in deep now. You only saw one option at this point. You were going to have to lie to your best friend which is something youâve never done with Lydia. Sure, you avoided telling her your feelings, but youâve never straight up lied to her before.Â
âYes, I do,â the words slipped past your lips before you could stop them. Now what were you supposed to do.Â
Lydia let out a deep breath beside you. You couldnât bear to look at her as you looked down at your fingers in your lap. The car was silent again. The only sound that could be heard was your breathing. It was eerily quiet.Â
The silence was broken by the Lydiaâs car door opening. You followed suit by unbuckling your seat belt and getting out of the car. The silence between you continued as you went up to her front door.Â
She searched through her bag looking for her house key. You watched desperate to point out that they were still in her hand, but terrified of the reaction that you might get from her. You werenât even sure if she wanted you to follow her this far.Â
âWhere are my damn keys,â Lydia mumbled as her frantic searched continued as she continued to dig around in her back not saying another word. She shoulders were pulled to her ears practically as her movements became more and more stiff.Â
âLydia,â you voice was a quiet as a mouse, but it caught her attention enough for her gaze to snap up to yours. âTheyâre in your hand still.â
She let out a deep breath and closed her eyes. Her shoulder visibly released the growing tension. She reached up to rub her head as she opened her eyes. She looked at you for a second as if she wanted to say something before shaking her head and looking away.Â
Lydia moved to unlock the door. You were unsure of what to do as you watched her struggle to move the key into the slot to unlock the door. You placed your hand over hers and steady it helping her guide the key into the slot.Â
âLydia, do you want me to go?â you said. Your voice came out strangled and desperate. You were fighting back tears that you didnât even realize you were holding back.Â
Lydia got the door open and she glanced back at you as she stepped across the threshold of her home. The tears were budding at the corner of your eyes as she looked back at you.Â
âStay here, Iâll be right back,â She said with a confidence she hadnât had since you were still at the party. She stood taller as she walked away leaving you standing outside the open door.Â
Part of you screamed inside run away. Run home and hope that this whole night was a dream, but there was another part of you. One that said stay and trust Lydia on this one. So thatâs what you did.Â
You stood in the doorway looking into the house you had been so many times before. The house of your best friend. The house of the girl you loved. The girl you had just told you loved.Â
Now that Lydia was gone, the tears started to flow like a small drizzle down your cheeks. You were able to keep your breathing even as you wiped the salt water off your cheeks. You watched into her house waiting for her return. The longer she was gone the more you felt like you should turn around and leave.Â
Sure, enough she came back no more than ten minutes later. She said nothing as she reached you, but rather she took your hand in hers lacing her fingers with yours. Lydia pulled you into the house behind her. She closed the door once you two had gotten all the way into her house.Â
The majority of the lights were off, but you could see a small glow coming from her room. That was the direction she was leading you. You followed her silently. The tears hand stopped coming, but the remnants of them were still on your cheeks.Â
Reaching her bedroom door, she pushed it open revealing blankets and pillows set up on her floor almost like a nest and tons of candles were lite and placed all over to illuminate the room.Â
As you looked around the room, you could only think of how beautiful it was. You didnât really know what all of this was.Â
âLydia, what is this?â you said unsure. You turned to look at the strawberry blonde teen who was looking at you a way youâd never seen her look at you before. Â
âI need you to listen and not talk for a bit,â She said taking in a deep breath as if working up the courage to speak. âIâve been in love with you my entire life. When we were little, I didnât really understand what my feelings for you were. When we started high school, I was with Jackson for two years thinking that I was in love with him. It wasnât until he and I broke that I realized that there was no way that I could be in love with him because I was in love with you. I didnât know what to do about that, so I tried to get over you by getting with other guys, but nothing worked.Â
âThen one night you told me you loved me, but the next morning I was sure that you had forgotten, so I didnât bring it up. I decided that I would just tell you how I felt instead. Then you would have to confess to me when you remembered. Iâve been trying to get you alone for the past two months, but every weekend you always opt for parties and raves and keggers. It couldnât seem to get you to come to my house without you being completely wasted.Â
âBut then tonight happened. When I saw Tommy kiss you, I was so pissed off. I was ready to scream, but that would not have gone over well. You pushed him away and then you started fighting with him. I just had to step in, and everything was such a rush, I didnât even think about was happening I just did. In the car, I was hoping you would deny Tommyâs allegations, so I could know without having to confess to you and ruin our relationship, but you didnât. I didnât know what to say. I was so overwhelmed with my own emotions that I just shut down, but I canât keep quiet anymore. I love you Y/N.â
You listened to her whole rant without saying a world. You couldnât believe what you had just heard from her. There were no words in your head just one single thought. Kiss her.
You put your hand against her cheek and leaned forward. She met you halfway pressing her lips against yours.
There were no words for what you felt. Fireworks and butterflies had nothing on Lydiaâs kiss. Her lips against yours was a magic that you had only read about but never thought actually existed. It left you completely breathless as you pulled away.Â
She grinned a large smile as her eyes fluttered open meeting yours. You let out a little giggle as you let a smile spread over your face. She leaned in again to press another kiss to your lips. This time when she pulled away to lead you to the nest like structure on her bed.Â
The two of you laid down together just pressing sweet kiss to each otherâs lips and cheeks. You laid there together just enjoying each other for what felt like forever. Before you finally sat up and looked around.
âYou did all this for me?â you asked. Lydia sat up behind you and wrapped her arms around you. She placed a small kiss to the back of your neck before placing her head on your shoulder.Â
âAnything for you,â Lydia said. A warm smile stretched over your face as you turned around in her arms. You placed another sweet kiss to her lips.Â
You had to admit there was something to thank Tommy for tonight. You now had Lydia. That was more than anything.Â
