Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) on the Lynn Valley Trail, a few weeks ago. These are the most common woodland Salamanders of the Great Lakes region. Despite their tiny, weak-looking limbs they occasionally climb into trees and shrubs to forage, which usually happens during rainy nights. Their diet is made up of many small invertebrates, usually those found within leaf litter or under logs. They are surprisingly fast when exposed, as I found out while trying to take good pictures of them. Unlike most amphibians which require a body of water in which to reproduce, the Red-backed Salamander lays eggs in an underground chamber or within a rotting log or stump. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #easternredbackedsalamander #redbackedsalamander #plethodon #plethodoncinereus #amphibiansofontario #salamander #salamandersofinstagram #ontariowildlifephotography #lynnvalleytrail #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #norfolkcountyontario #simcoeontario #cwfphotoclub #canadiananimals #salamanderphotography #herpsofig (at Lynn Valley Walking Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHFbxDSghL9/?igshid=1kwgm1zrndt8q

These three species are not unusual to find in the woods around the Museum, but we don’t usually find all three under one log! From top to bottom they are the a Red Eft, the juvenile form of the Eastern Newt (#notopthalmusviridescens), the Eastern Red-backed Salamander(#plethodoncinereus), and the Northern Two-lined Salamander (#Euryceabislineata). #VermontWildlife #VermontAmphibians #Explore #OptOutside #HuntingtonVT #VTAtlasofLife (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfYztlTuUZo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Female and Male Eastern Redbacked Salamander. (Plethodon cinereus)
PARS record #124070
I thought this might be a helpful reference. 😊 When put side by side you can see the obvious difference in their head shapes.
