Maybe it's just fuelled by bias, but I never interpreted L as a virgin or completely inept when it comes to physical affection. i mean i agree with the idea that he's not the most experienced, but idk i always held the notion that he would view sex, arousal, etc as [within the context of not having a partner] just an bodily inconvenience that could be ignored until it couldn't, or even just a way of stress relief that he'd either take care of himself, or resort to a one night stand (under a different alias, in an impersonal setting and most likely never contact them again).

i think in terms of physically affection he'd understand it phonetically - for lack of a better word; like when children are learning to talk, and instead of understanding the right pronunciation and meaning of words, they just know what it sounds like and know roughly how to use the word. L understands what affection looks like, he knows usually when it's expected and how to mimic and adapt to his partner's wants, etc. but he doesn't understand fully (either from his childhood, or his analytical nature) that physical affection is just a common thing that happens for the sake of it, and instead thinks it happens because x and happens in the context of y. if that makes any sense what so ever.

idk. this isn't a slight against you btw, i like the way you write him and i think you're the best person to dump interpretations of him if thats ok.

I agree with aspects of this but I’m still going to argue because it’s fun to do that. Obviously this is a perfectly valid way of interpreting the text but what’s the point of sharing opposing viewpoints if not to discuss and contrast them?

I’m going to mark his whole thing with Misa as one of my biggest points for L being somewhat into sex. We see him enjoying her hypersexual ads, he responds to her kiss on the cheek like someone who understands and is somewhat comfortable with physical contact and when he’s confronted about the obvious ickiness that is his restraining Misa he does seem genuinely off-put when Misa calls him a perv, which means he at the very least seems to understand how it could be construed that way. I agree with your point to an extent that in practical terms all things sexual would become something like a chore but I think that would just be the way that a lot of things would get if your mind is singularly focused on a task for extended periods. He just does not have a lot of time to take time to enjoy that sort of thing the same way he does not have time to enjoy eating a proper meal without working.

I agree with the general physical affection thing to an extent— that he would be naturally inclined to make it a bit more clinical and follow more linear reasoning— but I don’t imagine that a person whose job it is to watch and understand people would not also put together that physical affection is just a social need that people typically have. To not be able to understand that much— that touching someone can and is a mean in it of itself— seems like a huge oversight on his part if that is the case. And, again, he does respond positively to physical affection, so I don’t think he’s necessarily unfamiliar with it; even going beyond the cheek kiss, he has no issue holding hands with Light and Misa in their circle thing, and doesn’t react negatively or as if he’s startled when Aizawa grabs his shoulder during the whole Sakura TV incident. This leads me to believe that he has enough practical experience with being physically touched to not be weirded out by it or not know how to respond to it, which is why I’ve always hinted at the idea that his childhood did have a lot of normal person on person interaction in it to explain this discrepancy.

I'm curious about your take on Vincent from Young Royals

Okay! I didn’t think I had thoughts but then I did.

First impression: “Hmm, that kid’s haircut looks like he’d be in an early 00s boy band. But specifically a C-tier boy band. He’d be the guy who shares a first name with one of the much more popular members and therefore always gets referred to as Firstname Lastname to distinguish himself from the more popular one.” That thought, but in fewer words.

Impression now: Vincent does a lot of work as a foil to other characters and I appreciate the way he creates contrast. He’s horrible and gross in a teenage boy way, but there’s almost a familiarity in his particular brand of grossness. Like you have August being unpleasant and complicated and that can be a lot to take in emotionally, so sometimes it’s a relief when the scene cuts over to Vincent being unpleasant in a far less complicated way. Now that I’ve said that Lisa’s going to probably hit me over the head with surprise Vincent character development in season 3. I AM TEMPTING FATE I KNOW.

Favorite moment: I don’t know if this is a specific moment so much as me building on the point I said above, but I find it humorous how Vincent takes his season 2 leadership roles way too seriously. Like calm down, Vincent. (He reminds me a bit of this kid Jeff who used to bully me in gym classes, who used to get mad at me for not being athletic enough and messing up whatever game we were playing. Somehow we were always on the same team. I think one day I just yelled at him “I’m better at math than you, Jeff! PE isn’t everything!” before throwing a wiffle ball at him half-heartedly and walking away.)

Idea for a story: I would like to see someone do a series of vignettes (like a five things style, maybe?) starting in Vincent, August, and Nils’s first year when they’re all sharing a triple room together and think they’re all gonna be best friends who rule the school one day. And then over the course of all the vignettes they realize that due to the emotional repression that’s been socialized into them as upper class men, they’ve never had a real conversation and they don’t really know one another at all. I feel like that’s the kind of depressing gender-influenced character study I’d find pretty interesting.

Unpopular opinion: Are there popular opinions about Vincent I could disagree with? I realize this is a gap in my fandom knowledge.

Favorite relationship: I admit I find it kind of amusing that Vincent just straight up hates Walter for no reason.

Favorite headcanon: Okay this is my one singular softer Vincent headcanon, inspired by the fact that my friend @whambamglambam once asked “why does Vincent have a necklace that looks like a kindergartener made it?” So my thought was, Vincent was initially the youngest of three siblings, enough that he was probably an accident, and his two older siblings are already out of university and such when Vincent started Hillerska. But then Vincent’s parents got divorced and his dad married a much younger woman (like a stereotypical rich guy on his second marriage situation, it was a whole awkward family drama) and now Vincent has a stepsister who’s four or five and she made him the necklace. Vincent is capable of being a jerk to pretty much anyone and everyone except his small adorable stepsister and basically he would fucking murder someone to protect her. I just thought you all should know that.

-Deku is literally the kindest soul ever and it makes me want to cry. He’d give you his umbrella if you ever forgot yours, he’d literally carry you to first aid if you ever injure yourself- this man will legitimately do everything for you

-He’s incredibly observant. If he catches you looking at a pretty ring then he’ll literally show up at your door days later with that very same ring in his hands

-I have this one headcanon of him drawing you all the time as an excuse to “observe you and your quirk” but it’s really just because he wants to admire the way you shine underneath the sun- and that’s how he came up with the name Sunshine for you

-Deku has a heart of gold oh my god, this guy cares so much about you it’s unreal. Imagine trying to hide the fact that you’ve been crying while on a phone call- mission failed because he heard your shaky voice and now he’s on your doorstep with your favourite hoodie of his and your favourite snacks

-His memory is insanely good, like it’s freaky how good it is. Like you mentioned to him ONCE that you liked a certain drink and now he pulls up to your dates with that drink all the time (not like I’d complain if Deku brought me my favourite drink)

-Just like Bakugou, Deku is incredibly smart and he literally always comes up with a solution. You could literally vent to him about a problem you’re having at work and he’s come up with at least 73 solutions within 6 hours

-He’s determined and hardworking. Again, he’s just like Bakugou in the sense that he’ll put his blood, sweat and tears into whatever he’s doing- no matter if it’s a serious high stake mission or something like planning your weekly date. The second he puts his mind to something, he makes sure to give it his all.

-Izuku is your own personal cheerleader, this dude will hype you up no matter what. Training after work? he’s cheering for you. You completed a really difficult task? you better believe he’s gonna pat you on the back for it.

-He’s very protective of you. Remember when the LOV attacked the training camp and he rushed to find Kota? yeah he’s 10x more protective of you.

-And it’s not because he thinks you’re weak and can’t defend yourself, it’s because he genuinely worries about you all the time and just wants to make sure your always safe

-He’s an inspirational person, he makes you hella motivated to do even the most boring chores around the house

-Deku isn’t afraid to show his emotions. Unlike Bakugou, he’s often seen showing his emotions. Deku said “toxic masculinity who?”. He definitely gives 0 fucks if someone sees him crying/upset because I feel like Pro-Hero Deku would stop the stupid mindset of “Hero’s can’t show their genuine emotions”

-Izuku is the type of person to analyze all his losses, figure out what he did wrong and then learn from it to make sure he doesn’t make the same mistake again. He’s the complete opposite of Bakugou who gets bitter over his losses due to his superiority complex.

-He’s so good at comforting you that it’s unbelievable. Deku gives the warmest hugs that make you feel so safe- you literally cannot change my mind about this

-You know those hugs where the other person lightly rubs your back and lightly sways side to side with you? Yeah those are the hugs that Deku gives (he’d definitely give you a sweet little kiss on the forehead/cheek)

“Sunshine come here, let me hold you while you let out all your frustrations. I’ve got you, nothing can hurt you while you’re here with me”

-Can you tell I want some comforting Izuku hugs? He wouldn’t let go of you until he put a smile back on your face and GAHH oh my god I need Izuku hugs

-Izuku is such an over thinker, this guy worries about EVERYTHING under the sun. Your eyes didnt crinkle when you smiled? he’ll think you’re upset with him. You gave him a side hug rather than a normal hug? he’ll think he did something wrong.

-He’s self aware that he overthinks things but he just can’t seem to stop his thoughts. No matter how many times you reassure him that you aren’t upset with him, he’s subconsciously thinking about how to make it up to you

-He constantly pushes himself past his limits. You guys saw how many times he’s broken his bones. Deku may be intelligent but when it comes to his own self he can be completely hopeless

-The amount of times you’ve scolded him while you clean up his scrapes and cuts is insane. He just sits on the toilet lid and bites his lip nervously while you wave your finger angrily at him

“Sunshine please, I said I was sorry and that it won’t happen again!”

“Zuku you and I both know that’s a damn lie, I’ve had to patch you up 3 times this week! When are you going to start being more considerate of your limits?”

-I’m sorry but I picture him being so nervous to initiate anything with you. This guy would be so fidgety just by THINKING about holding your hand

-And deep down he knows he’s being ridiculous because come on, you’re his S/O and he’s been dating you for years now- why does he still get shaken up just by holding your hand?

-This isn’t necessarily a toxic trait, more like a bad habit. Whenever Izuku gets stressed he’ll train himself to the brink of exhaustion just so he can try to focus on something other than how stressed he is

-Again, not a toxic trait but a bad one...Deku puts everyone else before himself. Which isn’t a bad thing if it’s done in a healthy amount, but Izuku goes to the extreme. I feel like he’d neglect his own needs just to satisfy everyone else and you’d have to intervene before it gets worse

“Sunshine I said I was fine, you don’t need to worry about me! Your Zuku is perfectly energized and ready to go”

“Zuku don’t lie to me, you know I can read you like a book. You’re coming with me and I’m putting you to bed”

-I hate to say it but this guy hates confrontation so much that sometimes he’ll suffer in silence for MONTHS before he even hints at being upset with something

-I honestly think your biggest argument with him would be about his lack of communication in terms of him not being completely honest about how he feels and he just breaks down-

-Like he has a really bad breakdown because he’s been bottling everything up for so long because he hates the idea of fighting with you.

-And now he’s sobbing because he’s so frustrated that he doesn’t know what else to do

-Anyways, the two of you just silently comfort each other until you’ve both calmed down enough to talk properly. This is the night Izuku finally starts opening up to you rather than bottling up every negative emotion he feels

-I honestly think his love language is a mixture of giving you gifts and words of praise

-He’s a little shy when it comes to showing you how he feels through affection, so giving you gifts and his praise get his point across

-He’s totally the type to send you cute messages throughout the day, send cute selfies when he misses you, or he just sends you a random bouquet of flowers because he saw them and thought of you

-Also the type of guy to have photos of the two of you displayed around his office. His most prized one being the photo of your first mission together

-Just warning you now that if you ever mention that your suit ripped or a certain item isn’t functioning properly then he’ll literally buy 10 replacements- each one better than the last

Thank you, anon, you’re so sweet 🥰🥰, and I am so so so so sorry that it took me this long to answer this ask. Honestly, I didn't know what to say. I'm at a complete loss. I could make a stab at tv shows because there are some that just everybody has seen or at least heard of (and I was limited to Netflix), and we had Elite as a starting point. With movies...there are just so many choices. That, and I was talking to my nephew who's 19 a few months ago (yes, nephew, sometimes life is like that), and he and I had not seen ANY of the same movies. We couldn't find a single movie in common that wasn't like an old everybody in the family watches it together kind of film. Since he's their age and a guy, it makes me feel so unqualified to answer this. (Granted, he's super into sports, which is not something I hc for either Sander or Robbe, so maybe...)

With that in mind, I AM going to give this a try, but basically we're looking at movies that I'd expect anyone to have seen or heard of...kind of like the family classics concept.

Okay, of course one of the first things Robbe insists on is showing Sander Romeo+Juliet because it’s his favorite. Sander teases him about Leonardo DiCaprio relentlessly, especially the fact that he spends the whole movie soaking wet. He elbows him and winks, saying, “Now I know why this is your favorite movie.” “Shut up,” Robbe answers, blushing and shoving him back. “He’s also a really good actor.” Reluctantly, Sander agrees, and he pulls Robbe into his chest and nibbles on his earring as they keep watching the movie. Overall, he likes it, especially Mercutio, who’s “fucking amazing.”

This sets them off on a Leo movie fest, and they watch a whole slew of his movies in a row. When they get to Titanic, neither of them can keep a straight face when Leo shouts, “I’m king of the world,” and Sander grabs Robbe, pulls him off the bed, and drags him to the living room, laughing hysterically, where he proceeds to stand him up on the couch and imitate the whole scene. He steps up behind him and spreads Robbe’s arms wide, giggling while humming My Heart Will Go On in his ear and rocking them side to side. Robbe’s so shocked he lets it go on for much longer than he normally would, at least fifteen seconds. So of course Robbe’s mom peeks in from the kitchen and catches his eye, and he crumples in embarrassment. They land in a heap on the couch with Robbe poking him and tickling him, growling, “Oh my God, you’re such a dork, and my mom saw that. Ahhhhhh!”  And Sander just laughs bc he’s so proud of himself for embarrassing Robbe this spectacularly. After a minute he sits on Sander’s chest and pretends to pout, telling him he’s in “time out.”  They eventually finish the movie...but not that day.

They end up watching The Princess Bride because Sander can’t believe he’s never seen it. “How Robbe? How can you not know about this movie? It’s a classic!” So Sander invites him over and makes him a big bowl of popcorn and forces him to watch it on the bigger screen in the family room. “Trust me, it’s an experience.” He then spends the whole movie mouthing along with the lines while staring at Robbe and enjoying his reactions to everything. At first Robbe’s like the little kid in the movie, “Are you kidding me? What is this?” Then the princess gets kidnapped and his eyebrows wrinkle thoughtfully. By the time Inigo is fighting the man in black, he turns to Sander and says, “This isn’t serious. I’m not supposed to take this seriously, right? Is this a fucking comedy?”  Sander just gives him an indulgent smile, kisses his temple, and tells him to keep watching. He spends the rest of the movie with his mouth hanging slightly open in shock, occasionally giggling, and Sander just can’t stop staring at him. When it’s over, he turns to Sander and says, “That was---It was--” “Epic,” Sander supplies. “Ridiculous,” Robbe finishes. “That’s the point, cutie, but did you like it?” With the widest grin on his face, Robbe says, “Yes, can we watch it again, so I can laugh this time? Oh, and Westley is hot.”  “Welcome to my gay awakening, baby.” 

Because they are alive, they are not immune to Marvel, so, though they watch most of them out of order, they end up seeing all the movies together at some point, including the new series. They both think Tony Stark is an asshole, and they immediately fall in love with Captain America (because honestly who wouldn’t, and they have eyes...that is America’s ass and all, who are they to disagree). Sander is an immediate Loki fan. “C’mon, Robbe, he’s smart, lanky, and has long, flowing hair. He was basically made for me,” he says, brushing Robbe’s hair off of his face, as Robbe blushes. “And honestly, his whole trickster thing. I love that we never know what he’s thinking.” Robbe, on the other hand, can’t decide. He’s thinks Hawkeye is hilarious, and he’s kind of in love with Ant Man (bc Paul Rudd is cute and funny), though if he’s honest with himself it’s probably Black Widow because she’s a total badass. It’s not their favorite thing to watch, but what else were they supposed to do during the pandemic? 

Then Robbe introduces Sander to Pulp Fiction, and they get on a whole Tarantino kick, which leads them to watch a whole bunch of Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson movies, which leads them to watch Jurassic Park, which leads them down a whole Spielberg rabbit hole. They can’t help loving and laughing at Jaws, and while neither of them wants to admit it, they love the Indiana Jones movies.  The last movie they watched was Hook, and Sander can’t believe he’d never seen it before.  Robbe agrees, saying, “Ru-fi-ooooooo.”

No. Fixating on fictional characters and making a lot of posts and art and headcanons about them is the farthest thing from creepy.

But if I am allowed to be frank the fact that you are scared of the mere appearance of shipping two characters is probably the bigger thing to be worried about here. That's... Not a healthy way to approach this kind of thing generally. I don't know you so I really can't judge much outside of your post, but if it was just a matter of you finding the ship icky (as many do) you'd have no reason to think anything about yourself was icky cause your not.

I'll be blunt and say that I'm afraid this whole pro/anti shipper fandom mindset that's emerged in recent years is likely the cause behind why you might feel that way. I'm not saying it IS but I've met more than a few people in fandom who used to be either hardlined anti-ship or anti-anti and all of them agree the whole thing was mentally and emotionally exhausting and turned things they were supposed to enjoy miserable. Running their blogs was suddenly less a hobby and more a constant chore to assure strangers they were the "right" kind of fan. They only liked "good" and "correct" things to a pre-approved degree out of fear of appearing like an anti or a pro shipper or whatever. All this to say that if you like/enjoy the submas twins, to any degree, it's the right amount for yourself.

No no, I totally get what you mean. I sorta touched on this in the previous ask, but I suspect I maybe have ocd, so I overthink a lot of things. If there’s even a slight indication that I’m doing something weird, my brain will try and convince me it is. Like even sending a smiling emoji to someone I know to be 17, my brain will be like “ugh disgusting, you’re gr**ming them” when I’m actually I’m literally just mirroring the emojis they send to me.

There’s a thing called POCD which I’m pretty sure I have, but I don’t rly say that much on my account cuz I know a lot of people blur the line between “I have intrusive thoughts about X” and “I enjoy thoughts about X”. I don’t enjoy my thoughts at all and they put a huge damper on my relationships. When the thoughts are bad, I will avoiding talking to younger people at any cost. If they text me, I spend ages trying to word my message in a way that doesn’t seem suspicious. People who I’d otherwise be friendly with (eg my brother) I will just be very bland with, like I’ll talk to them like I’m not close to them because I don’t want to be perceived as a creep when I’m not.

Obviously I’m not self dxing here but I definitely have a lot of rather strong ocd traits, as well as neurodivergent traits (hence the whole hyperfixation thing…if I’m allowed to say that without beint dxed?).

Even though he’s such a minor character, so much of what he see from him in his ep is so compelling, mainly, that strong desire to act and make a difference, but external circumstances and internal fear preventing it.

Haru’s father (Tyro) is someone he admires greatly, and we learn that he fought with everything he had against the Fire Nation soldiers, even when he was outnumbered. That direct action and pure determination and resilience is exactly what Haru wants to emulate, but doing so would put him and his mother in danger, and, seemingly, the rest of his village have resigned themselves to their situation. ( Haru expresses his anger at the rest of the village for being “cowards” and not showing any resistance).Haru would’ve been around twelve when his village was occupied, so he’s lost his father, his earthbending teacher, but retained the values Tyro demonstrated: ( “ Son, when you grow up/ Would you be the savior of the broken/ The beaten and the damned?") that resistance, the will to fight and protect others, is what he’s left with.

HOWEVER. Haru has this complicated relationship with his mother where she clearly loves him and wants to keep him safe more than anything, but in doing so smothers him and outright condemns his bending despite it being such an integral part of his identity. (which *cough* can be read as a metaphor for queerness, particularly relating to parents of colour wanting to protect their kids but end up hurting them). Of course this only leads to him practicing behind her back, and there’s a clear tension where she snaps at him when he calls the soldiers thugs, telling him not to talk like that. ( Sometimes I get the feelin'/ She's watchin' over me/And other times I feel like I should go)

So in order to survive, Haru’s forced to supress all this anger he feels at the state of what his home has become, and watch everyone around him surrender themselves: there’s no strength in community anymore, and maybe, there never was, seeing as how easily that old mf betrayed him after Haru saved his life. (A world that sends you reelin'/ From decimated dreams/Your misery and hate will kill us all). So this leads to him feeling disenchanted, discouraged, and pretty hopeless about his situation. But then, of course he meets best girl Katara and she understands his trauma, has that same righteous anger, and is so full of hope. She’s able to remind him what he stands for and inspires him to take that leap, even when his own father was beaten down and discouraged, making him rediscover his own strength and hope. (Do or die, you'll never make me/ Because the world will never take my heart)

And I do joke about Haru is just some guy because. Well, he is. But that makes him even more compelling because you get insight into the life an ‘ordinary’ person, not a main character, not a chosen one, someone who isn’t gonna save the world but still someone who’s gonna do his damn best to make a difference where he can. ( I'm just a man, I'm not a hero/Just a boy, who had to sing this song/I'm just a man, I'm not a hero)

I absolutely go bonkers thinking about Haru and both his parents but this is already too long so I won’t go into more detail </3  But I adore Katara and Haru as friends so much!! They both have a lot in common what with having a disconnect with their bending, and both have that same anger against injustice! It doesn’t seem like Haru had many friends in his village after its occupation, and Katara didn’t have anyone around her age other than Sokka, so I think they deserve to be friends <3 They can practice bending together and Katara can braid Haru’s hair (one day).

Also Teo and The Duke! I think it’s sweet how they were a little group at the WAT, and it warms my heart to think of lonely, only child Haru basically getting two younger brothers. Ah I have two for this. The first is Awake My Soul, by Mumford and Sons - it's like standing in a samp field after rain and a stiff breeze, or looking out ontoa beach in the early autumn morning. Grey, but pensive. It just feels befitting of the colours and sounds I associate with the Cap's vibe.

The second is I and Love and You, by the Avett Brothers. Clearly the running theme I have for Cap songs is quiet melancholy, because that's what I'm pulling out for you today. I don't just spend my time getting dour over him, I promise. Anyway, I think it's just the concept of clinging to the few things left in your control for me - and letting yourself have a hair out of place. For Cap, not the song - I'll let that one mostly speak for itself.

Standouts lately have been Fanny and Humphrey. I love love love the Mr Cheese bit, and that apparently leaving Cap alone with Humphrey's head for too long has him rescinding the braincell immediately. I love when Cap gets to be silly, amazing stuff.

And the reserved companionship that is Cap and Fanny is really just lovely. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Speculating about sexuality

It’s time to get a little controversial on this blog. Or at least talk about a controversial subject. I’ve recently seen some fandom discourse about this subject from multiple sources. A lot of people have the opinion that discussing a celebrity’s sexuality is a bad thing, something you shouldn’t do. I strongly disagree.

Full disclosure, I’m a Larrie. I’m a 1D fan who believes Harry and Louis are a couple. I’m also a 5SOS fan. Now I know many 5SOS fans seem to be wary of Larries in particular. I know some people have taken it too far sometimes. But also, it’s hard to compare Larry/1D to 5SOS in many ways, because Larry and 1D themselves have done a lot of things to encourage fans looking into things they normally might not. It feels to me as if 5SOS fans saw the things that happened in the 1D fandom, turned around and decided to do the exact opposite. This is a good thing in some ways, but it also leaves no room for critical thinking.

Now back to 5SOS. I’ve had a few conversations about this topic and what it comes down to is this. 5SOS are famous, they live a life that’s (partially) being seen by the public and the media. Now this will sound cold, but it’s a fact: 5SOS are a product. When we interact with them on social media, we interact with a product. In the end they want to keep selling their music to us. In order to do so, engaging with fans is part of their job. It doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy it, it doesn’t mean they’re not genuine. If you work in a supermarket part of your job may be stocking shelves. You have to do it because it’s your job, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it as well.

Part of the product that is 5SOS is their relationships. We see their girlfriends plastered over their social media, they mention them in interviews, etc. That’s not something they HAVE to do generally speaking. If we are to assume that (for argument’s sake) all 3 current 5SOS relationships are genuine, then they don’t have to show us their girlfriends if they don’t want to. This means they either choose to do so, because that’s what they want, or these girlfriends are being presented to us for a reason (PR, bearding, etc.). Which of these it is, is for you to decide. Both options make them become part of the product. We are allowed to question that product, since we are the ones consuming it. If the person in question has made comments that can be regarded as them hinting at not being straight they open the door even further. You cannot tell someone to come over and then slam the door in their face because they get too close.

If 5SOS want to they can keep their relationships private. Their social media profiles are not the same as ours. They are a representation of the product they are. A representation of their image. That’s why celebrities often have private profiles as well, where they can share private things that they don’t want to share with the public.

The 5SOS girlfriends themselves are a product as well. They all have careers that involve being in the public eye, they are just as well selling us a version of themselves. 2 public people dating does not mean we automatically HAVE to see that they are dating. Celebrities can keep things a secret or low-key if they want to. In fact, I’d dare to argue they have more tools to do so than you and I.  

You can look at it like this, if I’m buying a laptop I’m doing research online, I’ll check out reviews. I’ll ask questions at the store. I question the product before I buy it. That’s not that different from what we do as fans. Before we buy their music we question if this is a product we want to buy. Most of the time that’s an unconscious decision we make. Sometimes a product can becomes unsatisfactory after a while and we choose to move on from it. I know it sounds cold, but it’s not that different with celebrities. If 5SOS keep showing me their public girlfriends on their public social media, I get to question that. If I come to the conclusion that I think that what they are telling me is false. I get to discuss that. Being a fan does not equal always taking things at face value.

There’s also a double standard in this fandom. Some people are more than willing to yell about how problematic and toxic the girlfriends are in their opinion. Which means they are allowed to poke into (what they think is) a real relationship between 2 people. When Luke says Teeth is about Sierra, they question his words and don’t hesitate to say their relationship is toxic. But when it comes to sexuality suddenly that’s a no go. I am absolutely not a fan of the way some of the way girlfriends behave. As long as this happens in a fandom environment I am also fine with talking about that. But if you disapprove of one thing and then do something similar, maybe it’s time you start practicing what you preach or leave people to have their own opinions.

This doesn’t mean you should tell the guys directly that you think their relationship is not real or that you think they are not straight. You don’t harass their friends, their crew, and their family about this. Discussing a celebrity’s sexuality/relationship should stay limited to fandom spaces. With social media it’s a lot easier for celebrities to see what we say about them. Therefor I always suggest being mindful of what you say (they may be a product, but they are still people). Personally it’s why I enjoy Tumblr, because most celebrities don’t go on here and (most of the time) we can safely discuss things that are more difficult to discuss in a place like Twitter. I will say, just because we are questioning a product, it doesn’t mean we get to be rude in the process. You generally don’t go to the store and start yelling at the salesperson if you don’t agree with what they tell you.

People seem to think it’s disrespectful to say someone is gay. Why? Is there anything wrong with being gay? Absolutely not. We live in a society that’s very heteronormative, being straight is seen as the “default” sexuality. It should not be. If you’re going to argue that it’s disrespectful to say someone is gay, then please also don’t assume they are straight. You can have personal thoughts, sure. I have personal thoughts on the specific sexuality of the guys in 5SOS as well. But I keep in mind that my personal thoughts aren’t a fact. I could be wrong. So unless someone has specifically stated their sexuality it’s best to not assume anything and keep an open mind.

Then finally I want to briefly touch on a topic that goes hand in hand with what I’ve talked about: shipping. Some people have a problem with shipping when it comes to real people. For some people shipping is just enjoying the idea of 2 people together even if you think they aren’t. While other people truly believe in that relationship. There’s nothing wrong with any of that as long as it doesn’t become invasive. It all comes back to what I’ve said before. We are consuming a product. The relationships between the 5SOS guys are a huge part of that product. The chemistry between them is part of why we love them. I’m not saying they are pretending to like each other. I fully believe their chemistry is genuine, but it does help sell the product. It also means that sometimes the guys/their team plays into that chemistry to sell the product.

They guys should not have a problem with fans shipping them together, because it’s not up to them to decide that. They sell us their relationships, so we get to form opinions about that. If we stay in our own fandom space and do not become invasive by showing them or people around them fandom content (fics, headcanons, manips, etc.). Then they should not come into our spaces and invade stuff we enjoy in that space. I get super uncomfortable whenever I see celebrities reading fanfiction or being read fanfiction. Fanfiction about them is not for them. It’s made for fans to enjoy and they should stay away from that. I want to encourage you to go and read this answer* about shipping real people. Because sometimes other people’s words say it better than my own words ever could.

The reason I wrote this post is because we need to stop making people who think critically about the things they are being told, feel guilty about what they do.

So I posted this yesterday, and apparently Tumblr doesn't let you caption conversations on reblog, didn't know that. So I’m now awkwardly blogging a screenshot of my original post.... Anyway, this has been a strange post for me. I seem to have found the only way to get the normally very positive and inclusive GO fandom to send me hateful messages - by pointing out that as a nonbinary person, I've never had any positive representation in media, and having that in Crowley and Aziraphale is incredibly important to me. I have been sent angry and insulting messages because of this post. From GOOD OMENS fans of all people!

Look, if someone wants to headcanon them as gay males, that's their business. But a lot of fans seem to think the entire world needs to agree with that headcanon. So let me elaborate on my original point and why respecting nonbinary representation in GO is so important.

I look female, but I'm not. I've been told my whole life that if I look female, I am female, and suffered from dysphoria-induced depression for decades as a result. I only overcame that depression as a result of watching Good Omens and realizing it doesn't matter how you look on the outside, what matters is who you are on the inside. And I'm not female.

Aziraphale basically presents as male pretty much all the time. Crowley does not. He explicitly presents as female as the nanny, and also at Golgotha. In some other scenes he seems totally neutral or fluid, having masculine features but neutral or feminine mannerisms/personality. And in some scenes he presents as fully male. This is genderfluidity and it's beautiful. By saying "I think he looks male and therefore he's male", you're erasing that identity, and that's something that happens to nonbinary people every day. It's hurtful. It's harmful. Don't do it.

By saying "they look male and therefore they are male" you're also implying that every nonbinary person who doesn't look perfectly androgynous isn't really nonbinary. People often can't help how they look, or are nonbinary but don't mind appearing gendered. This type of labeling is incredibly hurtful to nonbinary people.

Representation is critical. Gay representation in the media is important! It doesn't happen as often as it should. But it NEVER happens for nonbinary people. We NEED this. We have NOTHING else. Why would anyone insist on taking that away from us?

I've seen comments that if they're both nonbinary, that means they are the same gender, and therefore the word "gay" applies. I disagree. Some nonbinary people call themselves gay, but most do not. Queer is a more common (and inclusive) word (and I wouldn't object to people calling them queer at all). In any case, they are not always the same gender. "Nonbinary" is a very broad term and the expression of that category of gender is unique to each person. Aziraphale stays quite neutral while Crowley moves around along a masculine/feminine spectrum.

Good Omens is all about love and about being who you are above all else. If you want to think of them in your own head as gay men, that's totally fine. But if you try to force that headcanon on other people, you're trying to take something away from others who need representation at least as badly, if not more. I'd much prefer we all respect each other's interpretations of the show and be the positive, loving, caring, diverse, accepting community I know we can be.

If you want to headcanon them as gay, you go right ahead. I wouldn’t try to take that away from anyone who gets something positive out of that idea. But please, stop insisting that your headcanon is more valid than the explicit canon in the text which is confirmed by the author, that they do not have biological sex or gender, and let us nonbinary folks have our very first positive piece of major media representation in history. That representation changed my life, and the lives of many others. We can all see what we want in this beautiful story, and no one needs to force their preferred interpretation on anyone else. 

Let’s be the positive, diverse, inclusive, loving, welcoming fandom I know we can be.
