Mommy issues Armin Arlert? Hmmm.

As it is, his abandonment issues stem from his parents leaving him behind, I think. Since we don't know anything about them, it's hard to say what kind of parents they were, other than the obvious uh, lack of consideration for him on their part when they left on the hot air balloon. He seems a happy kid in the one or two official illustrations we have of him with his parents tho.

But now, for your hc, let's say they are alive. His parents being inventors, are often too preoccupied with their own stuff. They don't spend much time with him, always busy with ideas, blueprints, oil and grease. Armin then copes with this lack of attention by burying his nose in books - they take him to faraway lands on little adventures and discoveries. At the end of the day he's telling his parents all the new things he learned but after a "that's my boy" or "you're so smart, dear" they're busy once again, lost in their own world.

Armin grows up pining to be "seen" and validated by his parents. His mother, especially, because he really looks up to her. The severe lack of attention given to him during his childhood makes even the smallest compliment and proud smile from her a huge deal. He craves it. He's dying for it. All he wants is to make her happy.

In his adult years, this desire turns unhealthy. He's doing everything for his mother; caring for her, making sure she's comfortable, never missing a birthday or an important date, going out of his way to be the perfect son she'd be so proud of. But that distance between them established in his early years is too thick a wall to get past, and it's a struggle to break through it. No matter what he does, his mother is just never warm enough.

(Conversely his mother could love him too much and spoil him rotten in which case... Nothing will ever compare to his mother's love)

maybe even some epilogue chapters for all of the choices. like for the first two it’s y/n getting spooned/spooning the other as they talk about what would’ve happened i’d they didn’t escape (bc y/n was smart and made the one who got caught walk in front) and the remaining sibling doesn’t know that y/n still works for the gov’t.. for the third one maybe y/n moves in w them and they’re all poly now? dunno. still thinking. and for the last choice maybe y/n felt guilty and went to visit them in prison to confess but they’re both extremely pissed
