Part 1:
A few months had passed since MC had brought their unique menagerie of pets home. The once-empty backyard now bustled with life, filled with the sounds of barking, meowing, and the occasional whinny from Lucifer's new horse trailer.
On a pleasant afternoon, MC sat on the porch with their friend, surrounded by a sea of photographs. They were in the process of creating a scrapbook to document their adventures with their new animal family.
"Look at this one!" MC exclaimed, holding up a picture of Mammon chasing his tail. "Isn't he adorable?"
Their friend laughed, sorting through another pile of photos. "They're all so photogenic. It's like they know when you're taking a picture."
As they continued working, MC's friend glanced towards Lucifer's trailer. Their eyes widened in surprise as they noticed something unusual.
"Hey, MC," they said, pointing towards the trailer. "Is Lucifer... talking to someone in there?"
MC looked up, following their friend's gaze. Through the trailer's window, they could see Lucifer's dark form, his head bent as if in conversation. Beside him was a smaller figure – a young, red cat that seemed about the age of the colt in cat years.
"Oh, that's Diavolo," MC said casually, returning to their scrapbooking. "He's Lucifer's friend."
Their friend blinked in confusion. "Diavolo? I don't remember you mentioning him before. When did you get another cat?"
MC paused, realizing they hadn't explained about Diavolo before. "Well, it's kind of a funny story. I didn't really 'get' him. One day, not long after we brought everyone home, Diavolo just showed up at our house. It was like he and Lucifer already knew each other."
"That's... strange," their friend said, eyebrows raised. "And your parents were okay with another pet?"
MC shrugged, a slight smile playing on their lips. "Diavolo isn't really our pet. He comes and goes as he pleases. But he and Lucifer are close, so he visits often. Sometimes I think they're having very serious conversations, but maybe that's just my imagination."
Their friend looked back at the trailer, where Lucifer and Diavolo seemed deep in discussion. "I've never seen animals act quite like that before. It's almost as if..."
They trailed off, shaking their head as if dismissing a silly thought. MC, however, had a knowing glint in their eye, as if they were privy to a secret that no one else could quite grasp.
"Sometimes," MC said softly, "I think there's more to them than meets the eye. But that's what makes them special, don't you think?"
Diavolo's ears perked up as he overheard MC and their friend talking about how he and Lucifer met. He turned to Lucifer, his eyes gleaming with nostalgia.
"Say, Lucifer, do you remember when we first met?" Diavolo asked, his tail swishing gently.
Lucifer rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of fondness in his expression. "As if I could ever forget. Why do you bring it up?"
"Oh, just feeling a bit nostalgic, I suppose," Diavolo replied, settling down comfortably. "Hearing MC talk about it made me want to reminisce. Come on, think back with me."
Diavolo's mind drifted to that fateful night. "I was walking back to my hideout near the town college when shooting stars began to fall. It was such a spectacular sight that I couldn't resist going to the park for a better view. That's when I saw you at the top of the hill."
Lucifer snorted softly, the memory flooding back. "Ah yes, and then I galloped down that muddy hill. My former owner had dressed me in those ridiculously expensive accessories, and I was terribly uncomfortable. The mud certainly didn't help matters."
Diavolo chuckled. "Oh, I remember that! You were quite a sight, all muddy and annoyed. You even complained about the soil quality!"
"This wouldn't have happened if you guys improved the soil quality," Lucifer muttered, mimicking his past self.
"I was laughing so hard, I didn't even hear you," Diavolo admitted, his eyes twinkling with mirth.
"You certainly made an impression," Lucifer continued. "I was taken aback when you asked if I was lost. I brushed you off, of course."
Lucifer's tone softened. "I apologize for that. Even though I was indeed lost, I felt I couldn't trust a stray like you. Asking for help seemed beneath me at the time."
Diavolo nodded understandingly. "I remember how you tried to test me, attempting to provoke me into anger. But no matter what you did, it never worked."
"Yes, that was quite confusing," Lucifer admitted. "I couldn't understand why you remained so... cheerful."
Diavolo's whiskers twitched in a cat-like smile. "I was just really happy about making a new friend, even if you didn't see it that way at first."
Lucifer shook his mane slightly, a gesture almost like a human's nod. "And that's how you ended up leading me to your hideout."
Part 2:
The memory unfolded like a vivid scene before Lucifer and Diavolo's eyes...
Lucifer stepped cautiously into Diavolo's hideout, his hooves clopping on the makeshift floor. The space was surprisingly cozy for a stray's dwelling, with various scavenged items creating a homey atmosphere.
"Welcome to my humble abode!" Diavolo announced cheerfully, his tail held high.
From a shadowy corner, a small bat descended, landing gracefully on a nearby perch. This was Barbatos, Diavolo's loyal companion.
Barbatos's keen eyes immediately noticed Lucifer's mud-caked accessories. "Those look quite uncomfortable," he observed. "Perhaps I could assist in cleaning them?"
Before Lucifer could respond, Diavolo nodded enthusiastically. "Excellent idea, Barbatos!"
"Now wait just a moment—" Lucifer began, but Barbatos was already deftly removing the muddy items with surprising skill for a bat.
Diavolo circled Lucifer, admiring his natural appearance. "You look much more comfortable without all that finery."
Lucifer tossed his mane, conflicted. While he did feel more at ease without the accessories, he wasn't about to admit it. "I feel exposed," he sniffed, attempting to sound insulted. "This is highly improper."
But Diavolo's friendly demeanor remained unshaken. "I understand it might feel strange, but please tolerate it for a little while. It won't take long to clean your things."
Lucifer's temper flared at Diavolo's unwavering pleasantness. "I demand you return my belongings at once!" he neighed indignantly.
Diavolo's expression turned thoughtful. "Consider this, Lucifer. Wouldn't it be better to return to your owner looking your absolute best? Clean and polished accessories would surely make a better impression than muddy ones."
Lucifer paused, his ears twitching as he processed Diavolo's words. As much as he hated to admit it, the red cat had a point. With a heavy sigh, he relented. "Fine. But," he added, turning to Barbatos, "don't you dare damage them further. They're worth more than this entire... hideout."
Barbatos bowed his head slightly. "I assure you, they will be handled with the utmost care. You have my word."
As Barbatos fluttered away with the accessories, Lucifer couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Annoyance at his current situation, yes, but also a grudging curiosity about these strange animals who had welcomed him so readily.
Little did he know, this encounter would be the beginning of a friendship that would change his life forever.
Part 3:
The scene continued to unfold in their shared memory...
Diavolo, his tail swishing with excitement, finally had the chance to properly introduce himself to Lucifer. "I'm Diavolo, and as you can see, we're near the town college. It's a fantastic location - we can actually listen in on the lessons!"
Lucifer snorted derisively. "Laughable. What could strays, or any animals for that matter, possibly need to learn from a human institution?"
Despite Lucifer's disdainful tone, Diavolo's friendly demeanor never wavered. He continued explaining the benefits of their location, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. Lucifer, for his part, kept interjecting with insults and skeptical remarks, but they seemed to roll off Diavolo like water off a duck's back.
As they talked, Barbatos returned, somehow managing to balance a tray of drinks and cake slices he'd procured from the college cafeteria. Lucifer eyed the offerings suspiciously, determined to find fault. But as he reluctantly sampled the food, he had to admit - if only to himself - that it was surprisingly good.
Diavolo watched Lucifer with barely contained joy, clearly thrilled to be spending time with him. This only served to increase Lucifer's confusion and irritation.
"Why exactly have you brought me here?" Lucifer asked brusquely, his patience wearing thin.
Diavolo's expression turned serious, though his eyes still sparkled with warmth. "I brought you here because I have a dream, Lucifer. A dream of a world where animals - strays and pets alike - and humans can truly understand each other and come together in harmony."
Lucifer's ears perked up in surprise. He found himself pondering Diavolo's words. 'If such a thing were possible, why hasn't anyone back home ever considered it?' he thought. A seed of doubt crept into his mind. 'Is Diavolo trying to deceive me? But to what end?'
Before Lucifer could voice any of these thoughts, Barbatos fluttered down beside them. "It's time," he announced cryptically.
Lucifer's brow furrowed. "Time for what, exactly?"
Diavolo stood, stretching in a very cat-like manner. "You'll see," he said with a mysterious smile. "Come with us, Lucifer. I promise, you won't regret it."
As they prepared to leave the hideout, Lucifer found himself torn between his ingrained skepticism and a growing curiosity. Despite his best efforts to remain aloof, he couldn't deny that Diavolo's passion was infectious. Whatever was about to happen, Lucifer realized he was, against all odds, looking forward to it.
Part 4:
Lucifer found himself in the college courtyard, surrounded by a diverse group of stray animals. Initially hesitant, he was surprised to find that the strays didn't judge him for his pedigree or former lifestyle. As he engaged in conversation, he grudgingly admitted to Barbatos, "This... isn't entirely unpleasant."
From the corner of his eye, Lucifer noticed Diavolo talking to a young stray dog, barely three years old. He watched, intrigued, as Diavolo gently directed the pup towards a nearby animal shelter. The care and consideration in Diavolo's actions didn't go unnoticed.
The next day, Diavolo accompanied Lucifer on his journey home. To the cat's surprise, Lucifer offered a compliment. "What you did last night... it was admirable."
Diavolo's eyes widened, but he quickly recovered, his tail swishing happily. As they walked, they discussed Diavolo's dream further. Though Lucifer still expressed skepticism, there was a newfound respect in his tone.
As they traveled, Lucifer began to recognize landmarks, but something felt off. "Have you been leading me a different way this entire time?" he asked, realization dawning.
Diavolo simply smiled mysteriously in response.
When they finally reached Lucifer's home, the horse turned to the cat. "I suppose... it wouldn't be terrible if we were to meet again," he said, trying to sound nonchalant.
Back in the present, Diavolo's eyes gleamed with the memory. "I still remember it as if it were yesterday," he mused. "You had such a beautiful spirit, Lucifer, even if you tried to hide it."
Lucifer snorted softly, a mix of embarrassment and fondness in his expression. His attention suddenly shifted as he caught sight of something outside the trailer. "Speaking of spirit," he said dryly, "I believe I need to show some of that to Mammon. He seems to have buried my brush again."
Indeed, outside the trailer, Mammon was cornered, his tail between his legs as he faced Lucifer's stern gaze.
"Come on!" He yelled annoyed despite his fear. "How many times do I got to tell you it was an accident?!"
Despite the dog's pleas and complaints, it was clear he was in for a lecture.
Diavolo chuckled, watching the scene unfold. "Some things never change, do they?" he said, his tone affectionate.
Lucifer sighed, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. "No, they certainly don't. But perhaps that's not entirely a bad thing."
After story Aka the chat the came with the card:
Comfort from the oldest brother:
As Diavolo made his exit, Mammon saw his chance and bolted towards the house. MC, who had been chasing after a stray photo carried by the wind, didn't see the dog coming. In a moment of chaos, MC tripped over Mammon, sending them both tumbling. The photo and the carefully crafted scrapbook landed in a nearby mud puddle with a disappointing splat.
Lucifer, witnessing the commotion, trotted over quickly. He gently nudged MC with his nose, helping them to their feet. MC patted Lucifer's neck gratefully, then looked forlornly at the mud-soaked scrapbook and photo.
"Thanks, Lucifer," MC said, sighing playfully but with a hint of genuine disappointment. "Looks like we'll have to print out new photos and start all over."
Sensing MC's distress, Lucifer guided them towards his trailer. Once inside, he positioned himself so MC could lean against his warm flank. The comfort of Lucifer's presence seemed to soothe MC's frustration, and they spent a few quiet moments together, MC's hand absently stroking Lucifer's mane.
After a while, MC's spirits lifted. They stood up, determination replacing disappointment. "Alright, time to find Mammon. He's definitely earned himself a bath before we start on the new scrapbook."
As if summoned by the word "bath," Mammon appeared, trying to slink past unnoticed. MC quickly scooped him up, ignoring his squirming and protests. "Come on, you muddy pup. Bath time!"
Mammon's whines and MC's gentle laughter faded as they headed towards the house. Lucifer watched them go, an amused gleam in his eye. As he turned back to the trailer, something caught his attention - the photo MC had been chasing.
Lucifer leaned down, examining the mud-splattered image. Despite the dirt, he could clearly make out the picture: it was of MC and himself, taken not long after MC had adopted them all. MC's arm was draped over his neck, both looking happy and content.
A warm feeling spread through Lucifer's chest as he gazed at the photo. His lips curled into what could only be described as a smile - an expression rarely seen on the usually stern horse.
In that moment, watching MC head to the house with a struggling Mammon, and looking at this cherished photo, Lucifer felt a deep sense of belonging. This odd, chaotic, loving family was his home now, and despite all his initial resistance, he wouldn't have it any other way.

Lyle and Eric's friend Anerae Brown aka X-Raided
NY post article x
Brown, in contrast, characterized Lyle and Erik as mentors who encouraged him to change his life by taking more than a dozen prison classes and programs, including anger management and Narcotics Anonymous courses.
Brown first met Lyle in late 2000 at Mule Creek, where they quickly bonded over their shared notoriety despite vastly different backgrounds.
Brown was a Crip from Sacramento. Known in the yard as X-Raided, the rapper released his first album at 15 and still had a “foot in gang-banging,” a lifestyle far from the affluence of Beverly Hills in which Menendez had lived, he said.
“He’s a very charismatic, magnetic person,” Brown told The Post. “We just became people who could rely on each other.”
The connection was first forged on a prison football field, where other inmates doled out cheap shots to Lyle, including elbowing him in a “petty” way, prompting Brown to stand up for him.
The pair also connected over media scrutiny. Brown continued to release music from prison, attracting interest from reporters and even MTV.
Lyle soon urged Brown to renounce his violent past. That helped spark a seismic shift, with the rapper embarking on a decades-long quest to transform his life.
“Lyle was the guy who started teaching me the value of utilizing my popularity to my advantage in a way where I can be influential for positive things,” said Brown, whose latest album is available Friday. “He was the first person to say, ‘Hey man, I think you should sign up for these classes, there’s another way to do your time.'”
In 2008, Brown was transferred to Pleasant Valley State Prison where Erik Menendez was waiting to greet him, after a letter from Lyle.
“It said, essentially, ‘I love X-Raided, he’s my little brother and take care of him how you would take care of me,'” Brown recalled.
Brown praised Erik as a “calm, put-together” soul who picked up right where Lyle left off. “He was a positive influence on me, and somebody that I looked up to,” said Brown, who left the Crips.
“I became Project Menendez and they really did everything they could do to make sure I didn’t spend the rest of my life in that environment,” Brown said.
In 2018, he was paroled after years of tutelage and guidance from both brothers. Erik even wrote a letter of support for the rapper, he said.
via Robert Rand's blog:
"Brown remains in touch with both of the Menendez brothers whom he considers close friends. Anerae has told me that his contact with Erik and Lyle was an integral part of his personal development to turn his life away from violence and gang banging which he now describes as “parasitic”.
Brown, left, aka rapper X-Raided, considers Lyle Menendez a mentor. The two were photographed inside the Echo Yard in 2018, when local paper The San Diego Tribune profiled it and featured Lyle.

On this blog I'm going to post some things about Pathologic, Silent Hill, Arcaea, Deltarune, FNaF, JoJo Golden Wind (mainly about Doppio and Diavolo), other fandoms and topics I'm interested in, and some more random things.
• Some things you should know:
I !DON'T! believe Diavolo and Doppio is about DID, so my art about them doesn't refer to plurality in any way. Please, think twice when you're about to like or reblog my art of them, I highly recommend you to read my theory about them first [theory]. Also, I don't ship them;

My art can contain some non-English text. I usually put translation myself, but if I forget to do it - feel free to ask about it;
My English is not perfect, as it's not my first language, so there may be some mistakes!

Day 14 - 23 April Santo Domingo de Calzada to Belorado 21.7 km and 356m
Yesterday evening we joined Carol who has lived in America for 20 years but hails from Stafford prior to that. We had a meal in the hotel she was staying at El Molino Florin. It was a mill before being a hotel and is an ancient building. For a smart hotel I did think the cost would be higher but no - three courses including a beautiful white Rioja for 18€! My only gripe was that the rabbit stew I had was extremely bony. On our way back to our hotel we passed amazing Paradour hotel - the bar seems to be set in cloisters. Amazing place.
Left early for day 14 walk - think we were out by 7.30 to start the walk. We did a very short detour to Granon away from the very busy N120 Highway. Lovely village…even lovelier cafe! Other than that highlight it was a trudge trudge trudge day. The path ran very close to the motorway.
You see the shell signs everywhere. Our favourite was in a church along the way. We passed some very old villages - Viloria de la Rioja, Vilamayor del Rio (very pretty) and a beautiful albergue in Castildelagado.
There seems to be a huge amount of road building works going on. Carrie suggested it might be to divert the motorway away from some of the ancient villages.
For days we have been walking towards a hill (mountain? we are high up) we have named the nipple. Today we finally passed it. We both wondered if it was a hillfort at the top but on passing at close quarters I doubt it.
At Vilamayor del Rio we got to a cafe and were desperate for a pick me up of coffee and cake. Weirdly there was a ‘dance floor’ laid out in the cafe with a pole! This is Jenny who ‘striked a pose’.
I did tell her she should use the photo as her profile. We did meet up with her again the following day in Atapuerca - in the only bar in the village.
My face is suffering from the sun (a few days ago), the wind today, pollen, salt and God knows so I covered as much as I could. It made Carrie laugh anyway. And yes it did calm my face down.
One of the amazing churches on route - so many you get lost in them. This is Iglesia Santa Maria Belgrado.
Our Albergue in Belgrado was fabulous. We had a 6 bed dorm with its OWN BATHROOM. Unheard of! The Albergue also had a heated pool but as neither of us had brought cozies and because it was stupid cold we didn’t bother. We actually went to a bar to warm up. Carrie was upset at seeing a dog badly tethered to a post. His lead was too short and the dog looked malnourished. His owner had obviously been drinking in the bar for a while. Carrie took some bread out to him - almost took her fingers off - he was obviously hungry. It wasn’t pleasant seeing it.
The Albergue was one of the nicest we have stayed at other than the cold. It had so many facilities. And the food was really good. We made more friends in our dorm. Our Camino family is growing!
And yes I am a day late posting… especially as we have again rejigged our timetable. Tomorrow we head for Atapuerca…over 18 miles so our backpacks will be transported. Carrie sorted that out and booked us an apartment 😄😄 in Burgos while I fired a few WhatsApp’s etc to try and get accommodation. Its getting more difficult so in Burgos we will have to book the rest of the trip.
Some of the amazing wall art along the way.

Of Blood and Sparks - XIX
Karina Alexandre of Fontaine lost her position, her family, and her Archon's favor. A dead Electro Vision is her mark of guilt. A reminder to never fail again. Faith shattered, and suspicious of the Fatui, she eventually makes her way to Liyue, where she encounters a certain funeral parlor consultant. Little does she know it's only the beginning. Original character centric; eventual Zhongli/OC. Posted originally at @chevalier-of-fontaine. ArchiveOfOurOwn || FF.net || Karina's profile
Her haze of grief was momentarily shattered when she heard the tell-tale sounds of armor clanking along with the pounding of feet as a small squad of Millilith passed by.
She needed to get off the streets. Out of the way.
Work seemed like the most obvious choice. Not that there was one, she supposed, if she refused to go back to her residence.
Even if Jun Lei wouldn’t ask questions, Karina wasn’t certain her hands could hold a pen steady, let alone a needle. Business would be slow today in the face of the deity’s demise. Keeping busy would be more of an arduous task.
Her blood longed for elemental release, to feel the stinging crackle of static at her fingertips. She always felt better after practice, after sparring; it was less of a high and more of a stunning clarity, a connection between her and the ley lines that wove beneath her feet.
Adrenaline would have to do instead.
__________________
She kept her eyes averted from the mannequin and the hanging silk. If she didn’t look at it, she couldn’t imagine how it would fall across broad shoulders, how it would move with familiar gestures she didn’t want to think about.
Karina swallowed, untangling herself from the dress and its layers. She took comfort in the feeling of trousers against her legs, solid boots on her feet, and the weight of her sword at her waist. The pin stayed in her hair. Touching it felt wrong.
She almost took her old blade out of habit but Summit Shaper held an oddly comforting warmth in its handle when she unwrapped it again.
It was no substitute for her element.
No substitute for the one who gave it to her.
What was one more concession?
__________________
Karina’s feet carried her back through Liyue Harbor and up the hill towards the northeast of their own accord. The sun was still high in the sky and the breeze was faint but refreshing. By all accounts, a pleasant day for the Rite, under any other circumstance.
She kept her eyes ahead of her and ignored the Statue of the Seven and the passersby who were making an offering at its base. They’d already heard. Maybe already seen the descent of the limp adepti from the crest of the hill before the Harbor.
At least Fontaine’s old Archon hadn’t died publicly. That came with its own issues, of course. But those involved had the sense to be decent about it.
Fury welled up inside her and Karina kicked a stone, sending it flying right towards a cluster of hilichurls off the main path. It bonked one of them on the head and caught the horde’s attention. Lovely. Not exactly what she’d been hoping for but it would do for now.
She didn’t really care how long it took to reach her destination, such as it was, or what stood in her way. Hilichurls and slimes and Treasure Hoarders were nothing. Summit Shaper was perfect and, while it took time to get the hang of where in the blade the balance was, felt like an extension of her arm, falling exactly where she asked it to. A beautifully crafted sword.
A promise.
Broken.
She let out a yell as the last of her opponents fell, sweat dripping from her brow. Instead of turning east, towards the ruins she last visited, Karina’s eyes landed on a rough outline of crumbled walls high above the lake to the west. Without much more than a twist of her stomach at the thought of her sparring session at the ruins, she headed towards higher ground, stopping only to wipe the sweat from her face and take a sip of water.
When she reached the top and discovered the area was quiet, she sheathed Summit Shaper, her hand never leaving the handle.
Below, on the other side of the cliff, blue water sparkled, home to another set of ruins. Jade pools from calcium deposits stacked atop one another, leading to a facade built out of the face of the looming mountain. Trees of burnt orange and golden ochre dotted the landscape, vibrant against the azure of the small lake.
Her chest tightened. She would have loved to hear the history of this section of the Plains. Of what was hidden beneath the blue seal at the center, what used to be…
The agony that she was so familiar with came washing back like a tide and her knees met the ground, her legs refusing to support her any longer, her mouth open in a silent scream. She hadn’t wanted to feel this ever again. Her lungs were desperate for air but refused to fill all the way; her vision swam from both tears and the sharp jump in blood pressure. Thoughts were little more than fleeting notions.
If she held anything left resembling faith, she would assume she was cursed.
Everything she touched, everything, everyone she ever loved…
Gone, gone, gone…
What was the point…
Trembling fingers reached up and tugged at the locks of hair that came undone, just hard enough to pull her back. Her entire frame shook as she inhaled slowly and listened to the quiet song of the nearby birds and frogs. The stone beneath her was cool and she tried to focus on the warmth from the sun as she let go of her hair and wiped her face with her sleeve, trying not to leave black streaks from the mascara she’d bothered with earlier.
“You know,” said a voice. “I would have thought someone from Fontaine was used to an Archon’s death.”

Infused with high-quality cannabis extracts, Hidden Hills Rainbow Belts offer a fun, flavorful, and potent experience.

Perfect Dosing and Long-Lasting Effects
Edibles like Hidden Hills Rainbow Belts offer a different experience than smoking or vaping. However, once they kick in, the effects tend to last much longer and provide a more relaxing, body-focused high.
Hidden Hills Rainbow Belts are designed for controlled dosing, making it easier for users to find the right amount for their needs. Each gummy contains a measured dose of THC, allowing you to gradually increase or decrease your intake depending on your tolerance and desired effect. This makes them a great choice for both beginners and experienced cannabis users.
While the effects may take a bit longer to kick in (usually 30 minutes to 2 hours), the high is typically more potent and long-lasting than other consumption methods. The effects can range from a relaxing body buzz to a deeply euphoric, creative high, depending on the specific strain used in the product.
Discreet and Delicious
Like other cannabis edibles, Hidden Hills Rainbow Belts offer a discreet method of consumption. Whether you’re at a party, hanging out with friends, or simply relaxing at home, you can enjoy these tasty treats without drawing attention. BBA 🦤 2024
An RMR love story
It would be great to be able to say that the Boulder Badass (BBA) was a masterly demonstration of all that I’d learned about trail running since becoming a part of the Rocky Mountain Runners ten years ago. I’d like to be able to say that it was my best 100-mile event, one in which all the collective wisdom I’d absorbed over my years in RMR was executed and displayed to great glory for myself, and as a fitting appreciation for all my RMR trail-running mentors.
Alas, it was not that.
It was, instead, a deeply flawed performance that showcased my lack of talent more than anything else, but in so doing, also showcased my strengths, if only by comparison. One thing it did was demonstrate the amazing power of having RMR support along the way, coaxing and cajoling someone with my limitations all the way to the finish. Perhaps in that way it was a more appropriate way to tip my hat to the event and to the RMRs — without the collective support I would not have done it. My finish was a triumph of the community.
The 2024 Badass started for me a whole year ago only because the Committee for Bad Ideas decided in its obscure but infinite wisdom to ruin my year by giving me the Handshake of Destiny. Because of the obscurity of the committee and its deliberations, I can never say for sure what (if anything) I had done to deserve being singled out in this unfortunate way. I’ll share with you my guess, though.
Earlier in 2023 I’d tried to run the Cascade Crest 100 which, if I’d finished, would have been my third completed 100-miler against three DNFs. The race was going very well through almost the first half and I was starting to hope that I’d finally put together a 100-mile performance that I could genuinely be proud of. But then it quickly went pear-shaped after I accepted a cold beer from a pleasant guy at a road crossing running a bandit aid-station he called ‘the beer aid station.’ I should have known better. In retrospect it’s obvious from the entirety of Christian theology that Lucifer always appears like a pleasant guy offering you a cold beer at mile 40 of a long race. I’m not a Christian but I know enough to know that. Nevertheless, I drank the beer, and promptly went straight to Hell. Puking, not eating, not running. Had to sit immobile in the next real aid station for hours, then walk slowly along to the midway point of the course at the Hyak aid station. By that time I was so angry that I had fallen from somewhere in the middle of the pack to clearly at the back (again), that I called it quits. I was not in the mood for another 100 just chasing cutoffs. It was my fourth 100-mile DNF to two finishes. Infuriating. I was so angry!
On the long drive back home I made two decisions. One was to avoid indulging my self-pity and anger by helping other people at their 100s. Two was to indulge my self-pity and anger by running through the night by myself in Boulder to provoke a little suffering and to prove to myself that I was still capable of it.
This little indulgence ended up on Strava titled ‘My first Gold Hill’ because it was the first time I’d run to Gold Hill. I also included Anemone, Sanitas, the Hogback, and the Skyline minus Flagstaff. In 24 hours by myself I ran about 60 miles, which was enough to get some attention on Strava and make me somewhat less angry.
My first Gold Hill
I also helped at other races. I paced Andy at Wasatch which was intrinsically fulfilling, especially because Andy had a bad knee and after 60 miles of running was content not to drop me on the course. And then I helped at the 2023 Badass, crewing the first overnight to Rattlesnake Gulch and then pacing the Skyline on the second night. These efforts to help other people did relieve my self-pity and rekindle my love for trail running, but they probably raised my profile too much with the Committee for Bad Ideas. The end result was the Handshake of Destiny and my year ruined by knowing I was running the BBA in 2024.
Ready, steady, go!
When the fartblaster (failed to) sound and we ran off into the night, I was feeling reasonably good. I was thankful for the dry weather which made everything about a million times easier, even if the night was cold. My companions Levi, LeRoy, Letrisha, Lestephen, and Lemack all seemed to be in good spirits. We made our way down to Marshall Mesa without being crushed by the two spirited horses we saw on the lower big bluestem trail, and then slowly around the Dirty Biz loop to the Greenbelt Plateau aid station.
RMR aid stations the first night be like...
By that time we were all starting to feel like we’d been running for a while. Stephen was getting a little cold, which is usually my role, but I was wearing an ungodly amount of clothing and, surprisingly, still felt ok. Trisha had been the pacesetter most often around the Mesa, but we were all pretty much together. This continued until the Fowler descent when I was slowed a bit by some GI difficulties and everyone except Stephen ran ahead a bit. We appreciated the gifts from the BBA elves just before turning left into Eldorado Canyon and the Rattlesnake aid.
At Rattlesnake, I immediately headed for the bathroom which was a good idea. When I came back I found out that Stephen was wrestling mightily with staying warm. He had gone inside the his van for a warm-up and then Stephanie gave us the bad news that he was dropping. Only later I found out that he’d passed out briefly in the warm van and although it was a benign thing in retrospect, at the time I think it was right to call it.
We were now a group of five and there were still a few hours left until the sun came up. Thanks to Middle Kyle, Mario, and Ryan all warning me at various times that the first night was nothing to mess around with, my mental state was still fabulous since I had never had any expectations that this first night would be easy. Trisha was maintaining most of the pacesetting up and then down the Eldorado trail into Walker. When we crossed the South Boulder Creek around mile 31 and started climbing up the infamous Walker staircase, Levi and Trisha moved ahead and me, LeRoy, and Mack stayed roughly together until the Gross Dam road where everyone in the group moved ahead and I was a bit slower up the final climb to the first ‘fun’ aid station at the Walker parking lot.
Here was where the major theme of the rest of my run was revealed — an inability/unwillingness to eat enough. All my apologies to everyone who had to deal with this, whether by futilely cajoling me to eat at aid stations, walking far too slowly with me on pacing duties, or hanging around the SoBo aid station for a heroically long time. I could drink Coke and ginger beer and sip broth, but solid food was absolutely not going down very well at all. I managed to eat a pierogi and some hash browns while saying good morning to Kai dog, but for the amount of exertion I was doing, this calorie intake was nowhere near enough.
When we left Walker everyone was generally pretty happy since a group of wonderful pacers had joined us for the jog along the Meyer’s Homestead trail, the bushwhack down to the aqueduct, and the life-preserving car avoidance down Magnolia Road. My lack of calories was slowing me down and I got into Mags a bit later than the leaders but not too far back. There I had some amazing foot work from Chantal and Eli fixed a blister (sorry Chantal!) while I got rid of my overnight clothing and into my daytime gear of shorts and t-shirt. I got to see Stephen again who was looking fully recovered from his overnight hypothermia experiences, and his dog Eva who was, of course, also looking fabulous. She’s a good-looking dog!
Betasso!
The next segment from Magnolia through Betasso and over to Lion’s Lair trailhead was mostly notable for Victor’s reading to me his write up of President Joe Biden, which concluded his amazing project of describing the highlights and significance of every US president on Strava. It’s a fascinating history education, and as a fellow political junkie I really loved it. That segment was also notable for being one of the few times I would actually be moving well until the finish. The thermodynamics of no fuel consumption just doesn’t allow a lot of energy output no matter how much you wish it were otherwise. This was obvious on the climb up Poorman where I lost a ton of time to the rest of the group and despite running in the mix with them most of the way from Magnolia, ended up arriving several minutes after everyone else at Lion’s Lair.
To be honest I don’t remember a whole lot about Lion’s Lair. I’m not beating myself up about this; I’m surprised with all the sleep deprivation that I remember anything about this event at all. I think Trisha let me use a little diclofenac cream for my knees/quads (thank you Trisha) and I had some orange slices. Mentally I was still in a good place. Just not eating enough.
Time for the climb up Sanitas and then over to the dreaded and hated hogback ridge trail. I say ‘hated’ not because everyone hates it, but because everyone who did the BBA in 2022 probably hates it because of the truly nasty wind that day. As someone who paced that section, I will cop to hating it. Leaving Lion’s Lair, I was alongside Matt Shaw who I hadn’t seen since very briefly at the 20-mile aid station earlier this season at the Bear 100. It was good to catch up with him up to the top of Sanitas. Trisha and Levi had already gone over the top, but me and Mack and LeRoy got our hero picture taken on the summit and then started the descent down the east face.
I'm calling this Sanitas Plus
This started my lowest emotional period of the Badass. About five seconds was all it took for everyone else to — Poof! — disappear ahead of me down the descent. I didn’t think I was moving that badly, but the difference in our descent pace was extraordinary. I did not catch a single glimpse of any other runner or pacer for the entirety of that segment, even though I looked for them often and had great sightlines far ahead on the trail. Matt became my first Angel Pacer of the event on this section, sticking with me all the way into Foothills despite my slow pace. I appreciated this immensely, as I started to have all kinds of horrible fears about how everyone would be at Coot Lake by the time I finally got to Foothills. I was pretty sure I would be solemnly informed at Foothills that I couldn’t continue, and that I would be the first Dodo to be officially cut off. Even just writing about this makes me depressed. It was definitely my low point.
Crossing under the road through the tunnel and seeing the cavorting dinosaurs was a relief, which was reinforced when I saw the other dodos still there at Foothills. Of course this was a fabulous aid station with everyone looking just as suave as usual, just wearing different kinds of clothes. It was my turn to get the scalp treatment from Silke and Flan give me a ginger beer and Chantal loosened my right hip, and these things made everything much better. I put on some nighttime (again?!) clothes and set out with the rest of the dodos for Coot Lake. My low period was over, and I wouldn’t have any more emotional problems for the rest of the event.
Foothills to Coot was highlighted by watching Andy hold various gates open for us, and then cavort back up to the front of the group. He did this several times and it was very entertaining. I managed to run most of this segment, with Maggie and Maddie closest to me doing pacing duties. Arrival at Coot was in the dark, which I was vaguely aware was slightly behind the schedule of some previous BBAs, but I did not care. Eli did hero work forcing me to eat several more bites of pizza than I would have otherwise, and I talked with Stephanie for a few minutes. Time to set out on the next segment, one of two that I did not know (the other one being Walker to Magnolia).
Fortunately I had Jefferson with me, and intermittently Yiran and Eric, who made sure I didn’t get lost in the goofy residential neighborhoods of Gunbarrel. I say goofy, because my strongest memory of that section was that although there were several beautiful homes in there, the neighborhood was too-frequently marred by the most architecturally amateurish home designs I’ve seen in years. Like knock-off Disneylands where you’d expect to find a Cybertruck in the garage because it was owned and occupied by someone in the ninth grade who wouldn’t outgrow their love of Green Day until they turned 62.
Let’s just say that I was happy to arrive at Cottonwood where I once again failed to eat enough but didn’t spend too much time. I got out of there paced by Genn (= walking) and we walked all the way to the Boulder Creek Path and then close enough to Eben G. that when I felt bad enough to get on my hands and knees alongside the trail to fight off the nausea I was suffering from, Genn had to worry briefly about a few downtown Boulder methamphetamine users nearby. This city is full of urban wonders. But they didn’t do anything, and the next lurking person we encountered along the trail was fortunately not a methamphetamine user but instead was our friend Jefferson. We had arrived at Eben G. Fine Park.
Here is where I saw the other dodos for the last time until the pub on Monday, since although we all had problems of some sort, my problem was that I couldn’t move very fast because of lack of calorie intake. Did this bother me? No it did not. Mentally I had recovered at Foothills and wasn’t having any emotional problems. Which was nice, because my one physical problem was plenty! It was starting to get cold AF again, so I put on excessive amounts of clothing and dropped two new chemical hand warmers into my mittens and set out with Raphael and Sam to do Flagstaff. Before we left I looked at Sam who’d said he’d be pacing me. He was wearing shorts and a light shirt and I remember asking him whether or not he was going to be warm enough, since I doubted we’d be running any of this next section. “Sure, I’ll be warm” he said. And then I said “I doubt it, but you’re an adult so you can make your own decision.” Sometimes you just have to let it go and worry about yourself. 🙃
RMR aid stations during the second night be like...
Folks, I hope it does not surprise you that we walked every step of the way up Flagstaff, down Tenderfoot, up Chapman, and down Gregory into the next aid station. There was no running. Sam and Raphael were so amazing. To walk that slowly with me in the middle of the night is something I’m very grateful for. It takes a highly talented athletic mindset to do that. Genn did it from Cottonwood to Eben G. Fine. Luke and Ben did it from Gregory to SoBo, and then Maddie joined us down Shadow to the finish. I’m still in awe of how none of them were made psychotic by the pace. But they weren’t. Role models, every one of them.
One of the benefits of walking slowly down Gregory is that I had a few seconds to contemplate the bloody hands, and then a few seconds to contemplate the black cat, before I walked into the aid station. The effect of being physically exhausted, massively sleep-deprived, undernourished, hearing that goofy music (flight of the bumblebees?), while seeing everyone lined up in two rows, silent, with expressionless masks, not moving, was simply fabulous. Apparently Mack was the only other dodo that thought this. Lmao. Or rather, lmfao. I truly love you all. I only wish I could have been there to see Levi and Trisha’s reactions.
Fabulous!
I got into Gregory with about 31 hours elapsed, and it would take me… many more hours to do the relatively few remaining miles along the skyline to the finish. One of the juicy parts of the Badass is that so much of the vert comes at the very end. I had thought last fall that my impromptu 60-mile solo run would be the slowest time I would ever log climbing up Bear Peak. I was wrong. And poor Luke and Ben got to climb it slowly with me, which they did without complaining once. I’m still amazed. I have enormous respect for these angel pacers. Pacing can be a very hard thing. You can either suffer by being made to walk long hours with a nearly immobile ‘runner,’ and at the other end, you can be dropped like a sack of potatoes like I’m vaguely aware happened to Doug trying to pace the Skyline Superman, LeRoy. Either way, pacing is a tough, tough job. Pour one out for all the pacers.
You know who else has a tough job? People who work the SoBo aid station at the BBA. Especially during a year that I’m running. I heard afterward that they were up there for twelve hours. I could not tell that from their enthusiasm and good cheer when I came through. The first person I saw (other than Ryan going up the trail with reinforcements) was Adler, coming down Bear with a big pack. He lied and told me that Shadow Canyon was ‘a baby.’ Sure, Adler. Maybe for someone who did what I still consider one of the most amazing athletic things I’ve ever seen when he descended the Sanitas east face and goat trail in the 2022 Badass. Ask him about it sometime. He probably doesn’t remember. Because to him it was probably no big deal. Then I saw Silke and Ryan at the top of bear and the rest of the crew in the saddle. After hitting SoBo with Ben and Luke, I finally got to have the whisky shot I’d been looking forward to since Maggie told me on the way to Coot Lake that she’d be bringing whiskey to SoBo. I had pancakes with syrup and berries. I had hot spiced cider. I didn’t have enough of either of these, but they were delicious. I was mercilessly bullied into having some Tailwind recovery mix. Because these bullies know more than me about trail running. I really needed it. I love them all.
I'm keeping these friends
I was able to move pretty well down Shadow with Maddie, Luke, and Ben, and avoided the infamous Colleen Detour at the bottom. We were joined by The Eric Lee on lower North Shanahan. The walk to the finish wasn’t as annoying as I though it would be, and I arrived just minutes before the cold rain started. I am blessed. As soon as I sat down, every one of my large joints turned to cement. It was kind of cute. And Heidi was there to drive me home.
In the aftermath of this performance I’ve finally learned that I won’t ever have a ‘good’ 100-mile race unless I learn to eat much more. Although I’m pretty sure it was the beer that turned my stomach at Cascade Crest, I can’t point to any particular thing that kept me from eating during the BBA. Maybe it’s just my flawed physiology that makes eating and running mutually exclusive, but I’m not ready to accept that yet. More 100s are in my future because I’m curious whether or not I can solve this problem. Mack and Yiran have given me the targets to shoot for.
The other thing to take away from this is that if I can finish the BBA by 4pm on Sunday while not eating anything, you can do the BBA (or something like it) too. I will let you decide if ‘you’ means ‘you’ but trust me, it probably does. Go into it with the right mindset and let the amazing RMR community (or whatever community you're blessed enough to be a part of) help you solve the problems, and you’ll get it done. You will never experience a better support system for running 100 miles (or the equivalent in your own life), so you should take advantage of it.
Finally, my love for this event is enormous and the Strava shape of the route is burned into me forever. Thank you to every single one of you who helped me any any way, directly or indirectly. I look forward to repaying the favor no matter the weather or time of day. And that means you!

Exploring Thekkady’s Tea Plantations: A Guide to Tours, Tastings, and Scenic Beauty
Famous for its beautiful tea plantations, wildlife, and dense forests, Thekkady is tucked away in Kerala's Western Ghats. Thekkady's tea estates are a must-see for tourists looking for a mix of natural beauty and cultural depth. An idyllic setting for a day spent discovering the history of Kerala's well-known brew is created by the region's undulating hills, pleasant weather, and rich green scenery.
The Charm of Thekkady’s Tea Plantations
Picture yourself strolling among tea bushes in infinite rows, mist rising from the nearby hills. The scent of fresh tea leaves fills the crisp air, and the peaceful ambiance offers a respite from the bustle of the metropolis. In addition to being stunning, Kerala's tea plantations at Thekkady are a monument to the state's long history of agriculture and the expertise of its farmers.
The majority of the tea plantations in Thekkady are remnants of the British colonial period, when they planted tea gardens throughout Kerala's highlands. Some of India's best teas, from powerful blacks to delicate greens, are being produced on these grounds. Taking a tour of these farms provides an insight into the intriguing process of growing and making tea.
What to Expect on a Tea Plantation Tour
In Thekkady, a lot of tea estates provide guided tours where guests may learn about the various steps involved in making tea, from picking the leaves to drying and fermenting them. You will be able to observe the labor of love and attention to detail that goes into each cup of tea. A visit to the plant where the leaves are prepared and packaged is even included in some trips.
You will also get to taste a variety of teas, each with its own distinct flavor profile, during the trip. Tasting freshly brewed tea from the source is an experience in and of itself, whether you enjoy a robust cup of black tea or a lighter, more delicate green tea.
The tea estates make a wonderful backdrop for photographers. Picture-perfect moments are created by the contrast between the foggy hills and azure skies and the emerald-green tea bushes.
