What memory would your OC rather just forget?

Aside from the previous answer, there are probably plenty of memories of Nedvyllanna that he could do without, which do not serve him any good, or were generally unpleasant in the way he was treated by her.

Certain memories, like the memories of his Blooding or even being whipped by Nedvyllanna, while unpleasant, he would not be tempted to forget. Having scars upon himself and not knowing where they came from would do more harm than good.

How does your OC behave when enraged?

Lots of yelling. If Orgoll taught him one thing, it is that one does not need to be correct to win an argument; being loud and angry enough to shut the other person down works well enough.

When mired in the moment, he yells, and he insults, and he shoves, and in extreme circumstances he may physically attack.

But though he is easily made irritable and raising his voice and yelling is not uncommon from him, true rage is rare.

How did he come to love a Werelion who's an Agent of Mara and a healer at the Temple of Mara? If I'm completely 100% honest, when Sinbadaen asked Dalamus for permission to court him, Dalamus initially said "yes" because he was desperate for companionship after his divorce. And perhaps Sinbadaen was desperate in his own way, having thought he had found his Mara-Given Partner in another, but it was not to be. But they chose committment, and the love bloomed later.

They were wary of one another at first! Vampire. Werebeast. To each other, they're one of the few things that could be a threat. Sinbadaen was more gracious about it than Dalamus, tending not to jump to conclusions despite his beast blood reacting. Dalamus, while normally fond of jumping to conclusions as a twisted form of self-preservation, was given very little reason to be aggressive or hostile thanks to Sinbadaen's calm demeanor.

They first began getting to know each other while Dalamus was married to E'hla. Specifically, while Dalamus' marriage was rocky with E'hla. He would go to the temple when at rock-bottom and would pray to Mara despite believing she had no reason or desire to help him. He and Sinbadaen spoke many times on this topic as Dalamus attempted to work through his feelings and issues and make his marriage work. Sinbadaen got to see and talk to Dalamus at some of his most vulnerable moments over the years, and therefore know him just as well, if not moreso, than even some other friends or family.

So Sinbadaen saw what was underneath the prickly mask of Grump that Dalamus so often wears, and he starts understanding why Dalamus is that way. And in that time, Dalamus had learned of Sinbadaen's own struggles with his beast blood. Rather than repelling each other, their struggles as "monsters" brought them together. They knew what it was like to be persecuted for it, especially when their "slip-ups" can have deadly consequences, and were able to offer support to one another.

They both grew up with terrible family situations full of abuse. They know what it feels like. They know what it does to a person, and how it can affect a person. They responded to it in different ways--Sinbadaen becoming withdrawn, subdued, and putting others before himself, sometimes to a fault--protecting himself by remaining unobtrusive but helpful. Dalamus became quick to anger and lash out, selfish and aggressive--protecting himself by hurting others before they could hurt him, also to a fault; sometimes innocent well-meaning people get hurt.

In being extremes, when they come together they can offer other perspectives and bring each other closer to a healthier median. From Sinbadaen, Dalamus has learned how to slow down and think about others' perspectives, to have some empathy, and to be more considerate with words. From Sinbadaen, he gets thoughtful patience and clear explanations without making him feel infantilised, offering grace and gentle correction when Dalamus makes mistakes, rather than punishment.

And Dalamus, in turn, tries to help Sinbadaen have more confidence in himself, to put himself first sometimes. He teaches Sinbadaen that selfishness is good sometimes, that taking care of himself before others is not a crime. Dalamus also hopes to help Sinbadaen love himself physically with intimacy.

And they both assure the other that they're worthy of love, despite their past actions. They both encourage each other to speak their feelings rather than keeping it holed inside.

If Sin is the daytime, Dal is the nighttime. If Sin is the warmth of sunlight, Dal is cool rain. If Sin is a cleric, Dal is a dark knight.

The fact that they're so different and yet simultaneously very similar and compliment each other is what makes me love them so much 💖

I see you post a lot of John Seed, and I don't know anything bout the game and am curious: what makes you love him so? 🤔

Basically, he’s a pretty blue-eyed bastard hell-bent on murdering my sweet innocent, and precious rookie deputy. His brother runs a cult in rural Montana and has predicted the end of the world. John is his “baptist,” responsible for conversion and the naming of the sins, which he then tattoos onto people, only to flay them off once repentance is reached. 

John’s just very suave and murderous, with a vengeful streak and a flair for the dramatic. He is totally NOT supposed to be someone a well-adjusted human should be interested in. But he is quite fun to write, and he’s turning out to be my first foray into enemies to lovers.

10. Is your OC sentimental or pragmatic? Do they keep mementos or only what they need to survive? Have they always been this way or did something happen to make them change?

Largely pragmatic, focusing on needs and survival, but he is not above having Nice Things for the sake of having Nice Things. All the better to brag about. But he is rarely emotionally attached to anything in the way someone might be attached to a childhood toy or a picture of family members. He does get a little extra pissed if something happens to his jewelry, because he made most of those, so that is not just money lost but also time and effort.

This is largely caused by the Lolthite tendency to avoid emotional attachment. Which is why, now that he is outside of the Lolthite environment and will not be discouraged from attachment, he will slowly become more sentimental once he allows those attachments to form. Things like gifts start to have a meaning other than being a debt to repay.

12. Is your OC cynical or optimistic? Who or what shaped their outlook on life?

Oh, cynical, of course! Being raised in a cult of Lolth does that to you. It was safer to assume everyone was out to get you than it was to give the benefit of the doubt, for both your property's sake and your life's. To believe otherwise is foolish at best, and dangerous at worst.

This is a difficult mindset to change due to the risks it would have invited in his previous environment. He will never become a full-on optimist, but he can learn to entertain the bright side rather than assuming the worst.

SO, seeing this post always makes me wanna dive into the conversation I had with my friend Leafy least year when she showed me this post, about venous VS arterial blood and the nature of a vampire’s bite. I actually have the convo saved as a Google doc on the off-chance I made it into some kind of “proper” headcanon, but for now I’ll just paste our rambling here.

Please Note: Any time I talk about vampires as a general subject is me talking about how I write and understand my own vampires, not a statement on how I think all vampires should be written.

Me: Idk how much people in TES know about physiology, except for maybe healers, but I think since Vampires have to live off blood, they might be able to taste the difference! ALSO, Now that I'm thinking about it, there's probably anticoagulants in a vampire's saliva to keep the blood from trying to clot either way (kinda like vampire bat bites and blood-drinking insect bites). Which is good for the vampire, but uh, bad for the person being bit. You know how if someone botches your blood draw with a needle, you can get a pretty gnarly bruise?? Now imagine that but with various numbers of TEETH xD They're not precise, and will never be as precise as a needle no matter how careful they are, so the damage is.. a lot worse than what's usually portrayed in fiction probably. Mostly for simplicity's sake at the end of the day tbh Bc like, okay, someone has sharp teeth. But they still have to get those teeth into skin, and deep enough to pierce a vein or artery. Depending on where you're bit and how long the fangs are... I mean it's going to hurt either way. It hurts to get bit by anything. Human(oid) teeth are HUGE. Imagine sharpening a pencil to a point and then having 2-4 of those being shoved into you at once hjkhjkdfg And that's assuming they're so sharp. Imagine trying to shove unsharpened pencils into your arm to reach blood, oh god. The amount of trust I thought was needed to allow a vampire friend to bite, really just skyrocketed tbh. Can't judge anyone who doesn't want to be bitten and bruised xD

Me: I'm just saying you're gonna have to REALLY apply pressure to minimize bruising from a vampire bite. And it's possible that vein/artery preference is also determined by how much damage a vampire wants to do, too! A vampire that doesn't care whether someone lives or dies will probably go for like, an artery in the neck like the carotid. You get a good rush of blood but the person is going to get light headed really quickly and possibly bleed out from those holes punched in their neck. A more civilized vampire might go for veins elsewhere on the body because while it's slow and not as nourishing, it's not AS dangerous to the "donor" haha. And of course there are healers and healing potions in TES, which helps. Alchemists probably don't think twice about people asking for cure disease or healing potions. But if you're going to a healer every week because of a bruising vampire bite, they might judge a little xD

Me: Which is funny bc a lot of fiction tries to spin vampire bites as something sensual and now all I'm thinking is how much it hurts to even get play-bit too hard by a pet, let alone skin punctured by another human or human adjacent jkhdkfjhg

What I left out, though implied, was how arteries are almost ALWAYS deeper than veins, because they’re incredibly important and the body wants to prevent harm to them. Veins, on the other hand, are more often superficial. Which is probably why the neck is often a target, because compared to the rest of the body, there’s much less fat and muscle to get through to get to an artery.

That said, the throat also holds other extremely important and delicate structures. Damage the trachea/windpipe, and the person potentially suffocates or drowns in their own blood. Damage the esophagus, and you potentially permanently alter the way someone has to eat, if not kill them outright because the esophagus is made up of non-redundant tissue that does not have the ability to regenerate on its own. At least in the case of modern humans, surgery is always required. The spine, being bone, is at much less risk of being damaged by the teeth. But the spinal cord could be damaged or broken by any panicked thrashing or movements.

Let’s just say, a vampire going for a carotid artery is not interested in the longevity of its meal, nor the safety of its meal provider. A vampire going for an artery anywhere is not worried about the pain it’s going to cause. That’s not even getting into how nasty human saliva is already (HIGH rate of infection even among modern humans. now imagine humans without the same advancements in oral care and less processed diets), let alone if the vampirism infection is present in the saliva.

A vampire going after venous blood, however, is going to have to drink blood more often, and/or more of it per sitting. In venous blood, all the nutrients (minerals, glucose, oxygen, etc) a vampire needs (because its own body does not produce them, or if it does, it is in very limited supply) have already been mostly used up by the living person/animal’s body. It’s also more acidic, so probably tastes worse if you’re a creature built for tasting nuances in blood. But maybe some like the acidity, like some humans like the bitterness of black coffee?

A vampire who claims to only drink human blood is either extremely careful and restrained, has a willing “donor”, has found some way to preserve blood (which btw is extremely difficult) or buy it from somewhere that does (ie a modern vampire buying from a blood bank), found an alternate to blood (as of yet impossible even with modern technology), or probably has more than a few murders under their belt.

Human blood is often preferred because the balance of nutrients it contains is, of course, similar to what the vampire’s body would have needed in life. Not to mention, biting humans doesn’t usually involve having to pull hair out of your mouth for the next hour.

The advantage of animal blood, though, is:

Animal hunting is less likely to be noticed and/or will be assumed to be an attack from a different animal. No one is going to go to the authorities because of a dead wild animal. A dead person, though, would be noticed and examined closely.

Non-human animals are numerous and of extremely varying sizes and types. Variety is the spice of life and all that

Many animals reproduce much faster than humans and have more offspring than humans. It’s not so much a tragedy to an animal family when a member gets picked off as much as it is Just Nature

The prey is not as intelligent as humans, potentially making them easier to hunt

Technically not illegal. It’s hunting for food in the same way human hunters do. You can hunt to kill! You can have that arterial blood if you can get to it. Treat yoself!

Some animals have MUCH more blood than humans. Horses, for example, have 8 times more blood (~40 Liters) than the average human (~5 Liters), and can lose almost 2 entire humans worth of blood (~10 Liters) and still survive! This is, of course, far more than a human-sized vampire will ever need/be able to consume in a single sitting. So if you’re a vampire who owns horses? You’re set for years! (although, by nature, all blood draws would be venous unless your vampire has the necessary medical and veterinary experience)

All this to say that there are pros and cons to either arterial or venous blood. To each vamp their own!
