A Guide to Starting the Best Preschool Franchise
Are you passionate about education and eager to make a lasting impact on young minds? Starting a preschool franchise could be the perfect way to channel your enthusiasm into a rewarding business opportunity. But with numerous options available, how do you choose the best preschool franchise to invest in? In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the essential steps and considerations to help you kickstart your journey towards owning the best preschool franchise.
1. Research and Due Diligence
Before diving into the world of preschool franchising, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and due diligence. Start by identifying your goals, values, and vision for the preschool you wish to establish. Consider factors such as educational philosophy, curriculum preferences, target demographics, and geographical location.
Next, research various preschool franchise options available in the market. Look for franchises with a proven track record of success, a strong brand reputation, comprehensive support systems, and a curriculum that aligns with your educational philosophy. Take the time to read franchise disclosure documents, speak with current franchisees, and attend discovery days or webinars hosted by franchisors to gather firsthand insights.
2. Evaluate Franchise Opportunities
Once you've narrowed down your options, carefully evaluate each franchise opportunity based on key criteria such as:
Brand Reputation: Choose a franchise with a well-established brand reputation and a history of success in the preschool industry. Look for franchises that are recognized and respected by parents, educators, and industry professionals.
Training and Support: Assess the training and support provided by the franchisor to franchisees. Look for comprehensive training programs, ongoing support systems, and resources to help you navigate all aspects of preschool operations, including curriculum implementation, staff training, marketing, and business management.
Financial Considerations: Consider the initial investment required to start the franchise, including franchise fees, startup costs, and ongoing royalties or fees. Evaluate the potential return on investment (ROI) based on financial projections provided by the franchisor and feedback from current franchisees.
Curriculum and Educational Approach: Examine the franchise's curriculum, educational approach, and pedagogical philosophy to ensure alignment with your vision for early childhood education. Look for franchises that prioritize holistic child development, play-based learning, and individualized instruction.
3. Secure Financing
Starting a preschool franchise requires a significant initial investment, including franchise fees, lease or purchase of a suitable facility, equipment, staffing, marketing, and operational expenses. Explore various financing options, such as personal savings, bank loans, Small Business Administration (SBA) loans, or investment partnerships, to secure the necessary funds.
Work with financial advisors or lenders to develop a comprehensive business plan and financial projections that demonstrate the viability and profitability of your preschool franchise venture. Ensure that you have adequate funding to cover both startup costs and ongoing expenses until the preschool becomes profitable.
4. Site Selection and Setup
Choosing the right location for your preschool franchise is crucial for its success. Consider factors such as population density, demographic profile, competition, accessibility, safety, and zoning regulations when selecting a site. Look for locations with high demand for quality early childhood education and sufficient space for indoor and outdoor play areas.
Once you've identified a suitable location, work closely with the franchisor to design and set up your preschool facility. Ensure that the layout promotes a safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment for young children. Consider factors such as classroom layout, safety features, age-appropriate furniture and equipment, and outdoor play spaces.
5. Recruit and Train Staff
Hiring qualified and passionate staff is essential for delivering high-quality early childhood education. Collaborate with the franchisor to recruit experienced teachers, caregivers, and administrative personnel who share your commitment to excellence. Conduct thorough background checks, interviews, and reference checks to ensure that you hire the best candidates for each role.
Provide comprehensive training to your staff on the franchise's curriculum, educational approach, teaching methodologies, child development principles, and classroom management techniques. Encourage ongoing professional development and continuing education to support your staff in delivering the best possible learning experiences for children.
6. Implement Curriculum and Educational Programs
Implementing a high-quality curriculum and educational programs is key to the success of your preschool franchise. Work closely with the franchisor to implement the franchise's curriculum effectively, incorporating age-appropriate activities, lesson plans, learning materials, and assessments. Ensure that the curriculum promotes holistic child development, fosters curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and social-emotional skills.
Regularly assess and evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and educational programs, soliciting feedback from staff, parents, and children. Make adjustments and improvements as needed to meet the evolving needs and interests of children and families.
7. Marketing and Enrollment
Effective marketing is essential for attracting enrolments and building awareness of your preschool franchise in the community. Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that utilizes a mix of online and offline channels, including social media, website, local advertising, community events, open houses, and word-of-mouth referrals.
Highlight the unique features and benefits of your preschool franchise, including its educational philosophy, curriculum, facilities, staff qualifications, and commitment to excellence. Showcase testimonials from satisfied parents, success stories, and achievements to build credibility and trust with prospective families.
Offer incentives such as early bird discounts, sibling discounts, referral bonuses, or scholarships to incentivize enrolments and attract families to your preschool franchise. Develop relationships with local businesses, community organizations, pediatricians, and other influencers to expand your reach and network within the community.
8. Grand Opening and Beyond
Celebrate the grand opening of your preschool franchise with a memorable event that showcases your facilities, introduces staff, and engages with prospective families. Organize guided tours, demonstrations, activities, and refreshments to create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere for visitors.
Continue to engage with families and the community beyond the grand opening by hosting ongoing events, workshops, and activities that promote family involvement and community engagement. Build relationships with local schools, childcare providers, and community organizations to foster collaboration and partnerships.
Regularly assess and evaluate the performance of your preschool franchise, soliciting feedback from stakeholders and implementing improvements as needed to ensure ongoing success and growth. Stay abreast of industry trends, educational research, and best practices to remain at the forefront of early childhood education.
By following these steps and considerations, you can embark on a rewarding journey towards starting the best preschool franchise and making a positive impact on the lives of young children and families in your community. India and Independence- Part 1
Tomorrow, 15th of August, is when India celebrates her 77th Independence day and I'd like to rant on everything that should be brought in spotlight. Here we go:
Religion and its role in today's India: I expect we all know what's the current state of religion is in India. It has became no more than a political tool to gain votes. Nothing more. People kill, torture, rape, exploit in the name of religion. The united front this country once presented in the face of the colonisers has long been collapsed. People of different faith find themselves questioning their safety and rights in our country. Have we all forgotten? That in the struggle of independence, we didn't see eachother as hindu, muslims or Sikh, we were just Indians. That during the Jallian wala bagh shootings, the Britishers didn't discriminate between Hindus and muslims, they open fired at all. So why today we point fingers at eachother? Why does extremist parties still thrive in this country who spread religious hatred and entice communal violence? They put on a facade that 'blah blah religion is under threat' and naively everyone agrees. The higher ups plays with the religious beliefs so that they can remain in that position of power. We must remind ourselves this independence day that as long as we foster religious hate, we are never going to develop.
Deep rooted patriarchy and it's cruel effects on the women of this country: Oh I can never run out of words when speaking on this topic. Whether you're a man who has been told since childhood that "boys don't cry" or a woman who has experienced all the atrocities committed by people around you just because you're a woman. We all have experienced the toxic effects of Patriarchy in our daily lives. The mindset that men are superior, more logical, more capable, owner of the house, women are emotional, weak, should stay at home, lower their voices while talking to men, each and every one of this point mixes the poison of Patriarchy deeper into the rivers of this country. It is so deeply engraved that people don't even bat an eyelash when a husband treats his wife like shit. Domestic abuse is common in India. Violence against women is justified. "Husbands have a right to beat their wives", I heard this from the mouth of my own grandmother 2 days ago. This country got independence 77 years ago, but women don't have any in this country. From the second we step out of their homes, men eye us lecherously, we step into our workplace, the manager gives us a creepy smile, we go to schools and colleges, the principal teaches us "don't dress provocatively." Where are the morals? Rape has became so common that we don't understand how horrific it is. And how do the rapists get punished? Bilkis bano's rapists were bailed out and were felicitated with garlands and bouquets as if they did some great thing for the country. THEY GANG RAPED HER. Nirbhaya's case (Delhi 2012), changed nothing! The convicts were hanged yes, but what did the government do to lessen the chances of another nirbhaya? What did they do to protect the women of our country? Nothing. Prajjwal Revanna, a renowned politician, whose rally our honourable pm😍 himself attended, had raped women and had recorded sex tapes of him doing the act. What was the action taken against him? Nothing. The recent news that cut deeply through the medical community, The kolkata doctor's horrific rape and brutal murder. She had completed her 36 HOUR shift and had dinner with her juniors at 2 am. Then went to rest in the seminar hall. What are they doing to bring justice? Nothing, just false assurances. All this country does is sits back and wait for another Bilkis bano, another nirbhaya, another female doctor. When is this going to change?
I wanted to delve even deeper into the issues but the post is getting too long. So, wait for part 2 ig?

Meaning of Name: Joyous, Cheerful, Happy .
Nicknames: Harsh (By friends, parents) , Dork (By Tanya)
Pronouns: He/Him (cis guy)
Sexuality: Biromantic and Bisexual. However, he is still closeted to his family. Only Tanya knows about it.
Personality: Leans towards the 'lawful neutral' image. Ambivert who enjoys his alone time as much as social time. hard-working, charismatic and caring. He is willing to go to any lengths to protect the people he loves (and his patients as well), and an extremely trustworthy person.
Parents: Both his parents are from New Delhi, India and were the first doctors in their respective families. His dad is a neurosurgeon while his mother is a gynecologist. Their inspiration and how they help people is what inspired Harshith to become a doctor.
Siblings: He has a younger sister Tanya (my VoS MC), who works as a reporter in New York. Harshith's time in med school strains their relationship for a period of time, but both share a really good relationship.
Home: He was born in New Delhi, but his family migrated to Chicago when he was 13. He goes to The University of Columbia for his med school, and eventually settles in Boston after his residency in Edenbrook.
Religion: His family are orthodox Hindus, but Harshith does not insist on following the practices on a daily basis, except on special occasions like festivals and before exams.
Hobbies: Harshith is an AMAZING guitar player, but unfortunately he never joined any of the music clubs in school out of fear, and he is an excellent chef, signature dish being aloo parathas. Additionally, he enjoys having video game nights with Elijah, as it feels like it keeps him close to home.
Love life: He used to have a girlfriend in high school and they maintained long distance relationship when he was in Columbia, but eventually he found out that she was cheating on him when he returned to Chicago to surprise her. Since then, Harshith swore off on dating until he got close to Aurora (idc about canon). In my HC, Harshith proposes to Aurora at the last day of their residency.
Other facts:
Once, as a kid, Harshith tried faking an injury with red markers and tons of band-aids.
He enjoyed taking care of Tanya when they were kids, like helping her with homework, making sure she took her vitamins on time, as his parents used to be busy most of the time.
He is a complete nerd for sports cars and F1 racing.
At a point of time in high school, his classmates used to pay him for doing their assignments.
His favorite possession is a play doctor coat he had as a kid, and the Rolex watch his dad gifted him after he got his residency in Edenbrook.

Parenting Tips for the Summer: Keeping Your Children Engaged, Safe, and Healthy During the Summer Holidays
As the summer holidays approach, parents often find themselves juggling the need to keep their children entertained, safe, and healthy. At Modern Early Years Deepali Pitampura, we understand the challenges that come with this task and are here to offer practical tips to help you navigate the summer months smoothly. With a little planning and creativity, you can ensure your children have a memorable and productive summer break.
Plan a Balanced Schedule While summer holidays are meant for relaxation, maintaining a semblance of routine helps children feel secure, so planning a balanced schedule that includes time for learning, play, and rest is essential. Incorporating educational activities can keep your child's mind sharp and engaged; this can involve reading books, engaging in fun science experiments, or exploring educational apps and websites together. Additionally, setting aside family time is crucial for strengthening family bonds during this period. Regularly plan family activities such as board games, movie nights, or cooking together to make the most of this opportunity for connection and shared experiences. By combining structure with engaging and educational activities, and prioritising quality family time, you can create a fulfilling and enriching summer routine for your children. Here are some of the activities that you can incorporate while creating a summer schedule for your children.
Encourage Outdoor Activities Promoting physical exercise is crucial for a child's development during the summer holidays. Encourage various activities such as cycling, swimming, or playing sports, as these not only keep children fit but also help in developing their social skills through team play and interaction. It's also a great time to explore nature, by planning hikes, visits to the park, or even camping trips. These outdoor adventures not only provide exercise but also teach children about the environment and foster a love for nature. However, safety should always come first; ensure that outdoor activities are safe by equipping your children with helmets for cycling, supervising them during swimming sessions, and applying sunscreen to protect them from harmful UV rays.
Foster Creativity Nurture your child's creativity this summer by incorporating arts and crafts projects into their routine, providing them with materials like paper, paints, and clay to let their imagination run wild and create their own masterpieces. Best nursery school in New Delhi Encourage exploration of their musical side through activities like playing an instrument, singing, or dancing, as these not only provide fun but also enrich their understanding and appreciation of music. Additionally, inspire their storytelling and writing abilities by prompting them to write their own stories or keep a summer diary, which not only enhances their writing skills but also allows them to express their creativity and share their thoughts and experiences.
Limit Screen Time Setting boundaries around screen time is essential during the summer break. While screens can be a valuable source of entertainment and education, it's crucial to establish limits and encourage other activities to maintain a healthy balance. Best CBSE School in Delhi Encourage your children to engage in physical activities, arts and crafts, reading, and outdoor play to supplement their screen time. Modern Early play school in Delhi Consider making screen time a family activity by watching educational programs, shows, and movies or playing interactive games together, fostering a shared experience that combines learning and bonding.

Additionally, enrolling them in community programs or summer camps can provide structured activities and opportunities to make new friends outside of their immediate circle.

In the lead up to the 2024 elections, the Biden administration has taken aim at several Russian information operations. Earlier in September, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against two employees of RT, a Russian state-backed news network formerly known as Russia Today. At the heart of the indictment was Tenet Media, a company promoting content from right-wing influencers. RT, prosecutors say, largely funded Tenet, and its employees “edited, posted, and directed” content. (The individual influencers deny they knew about the company’s ties to Russia.)
Last week, Meta announced that it would ban RT and other media outlets backed by the Russian state from its platforms. Meanwhile, YouTube said it removed more than 230 channels with connections to Russian-backed media. Those decisions followed the US State Department imposing sanctions on Russian state media, saying that in addition to spreading disinformation about the war in Ukraine, RT was supporting a crowdfunding effort to support the Russian military’s invasion and had developed operations directly tied to Russia’s intelligence agencies.
“These Kremlin-backed media outlets are not only playing this covert influence role to undermine democracy in the United States, but also to meddle in the sovereign affairs of countries around the world,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the time. “As part of RT’s expanded capabilities, the Russian Government embedded within RT a unit with cyber operational capabilities and ties to Russian intelligence. RT’s leadership had direct, witting knowledge of this enterprise.”
“Meta's ban of RT and other Russian state media stings a lot because that has been a core channel for the spread of Russian propaganda,” says Samuel Woolley, associate professor and founder of the Propaganda Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh.
In the US, RT pulled in former war reporter Chris Hedges and late night host Larry King before it lost most of its broadcast access following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. But while the sanctions and deplatforming are certainly a blow to propaganda efforts directed at the US—Russian state media has seen some real success on social media—experts who spoke to WIRED say that it by no means will cap the outlets’ reach. RT is well-regarded in other parts of the world, particularly in Africa and Latin America, and Spanish language speakers make up the outlet’s largest market outside Russia. It has also invested heavily in old school television infrastructure, with offices in Havana, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Delhi, Algiers, and many other locations that will likely continue to operate unhindered, and offers services in French, German, and Arabic, in addition to English.
“English language speakers haven't been the primary target of RT or Russian media's propaganda efforts,” says Woolley. “And they’ve been building capacity for nearly two decades across Latin America, portions of Africa, and elsewhere in the world. And that has meant in those places that RT and Sputnik have almost become like a fixture of everyday life.”
In Latin America alone, RT’s channels run 24/7, and reported 18 million viewers in 2018. African Stream, which was also named by the State Department as part of Russian state media’s influence architecture and later removed by YouTube and Meta, garnered 460,000 followers on YouTube in the two years it was up and running. And Woolley notes that in these markets, there is likely less competition for viewership than there is in the saturated US media landscape.
“[Russian media] made headway in limited media ecosystems, where its attempts to control public opinion are arguably much more effective,” he says. Russian media particularly hones in on anti-colonial, anti-Western narratives that can feel particularly salient in markets that have been deeply impacted by Western imperialism. The US also has state-funded media that operates in foreign countries, like Voice of America, though according to the organization’s website, the 1994 U.S. International Broadcasting Act “prohibits interference by any US government official in the objective, independent reporting of news.”
Rubi Bledsoe, a research associate at Center for Strategic and International Studies, says that even with Russian state media removed from some social platforms, its messages are still likely to spread in more covert ways, through influencers and smaller publications with which it has cultivated relationships.
“Not only was Russian media good at hiding that they were a Russian government entity, on the side they would seed some of their stories to local newspapers and local media throughout the region,” she says, noting that the large South American broadcasting corporation TeleSur would sometimes partner with RT. (Other times, Russia will back local outlets like Cameroon’s Afrique Média). “All of these secondary and tertiary news outlets are a lot smaller, but can talk to parts of the local population,” she says.
Russian media has also helped cultivate local influencers who often align with its messaging. Bledsoe points to Inna Afinogenova, a Russian Spanish-language broadcaster who previously worked for RT but now has her own independent YouTube channel where she has more than 480,000 followers. (Afinogenova left RT after saying she disagreed with the war in Ukraine).
And Bledsoe says that the ban from the US might actually be a boon for Russian media in the parts of the world where it’s actively trying to cultivate its image as a trusted media brand. “The narratives that were shared through RT and other Russian media and in Iranian media as well, it's a kind of anti-imperialist dig at the West, and the US,” she says. “Saying the US is the driving force behind this international system and they’re plotting, and they’re out to get you, to impose on other countries’ sovereignty.”
Though Meta was a key avenue for the spread of Russian state media content, it still has a home on other platforms. RT does not appear to have a verified TikTok account, but accounts that exclusively post RT content, like @russian_news_ and @russiatodayfrance have tens of thousands of followers on the app. African Stream’s TikTok is still live with nearly 1 million followers. TikTok spokesperson Jamie Favazza referred WIRED to the company’s policies on election-related mis- and disinformation.
A post on X on from RT’s account on September 18, the day after the ban linked to its accounts on platforms like right-wing video sharing platform Rumble, X, and Russian YouTube alternative VK. (RT has 3.2 million followers on X and 125,000 on Rumble). “Meta can ban us all it wants,” the post read. “But you can always find us here.” X did not respond to a request for comment.

As an armed rebellion against Indian rule raged in Kashmir through the 1990s and 2000s, Jamaat-e-Islami, an influential socio-religious group, called for a boycott whenever an election was held, claiming the exercise was aimed at legitimising what it would describe as New Delhi’s occupation of the Himalayan region, which is also claimed in part or full by Pakistan and China.
But as Kashmir votes in the first regional election in a decade starting on Tuesday, the Jamaat has itself entered the political fray, backing at least 10 candidates in the election. It is a remarkable turnaround for a group that remains banned under India’s anti-terror laws and was once regarded as the mothership of the militant Hizbul Mujahideen.
After Narendra Modi’s government altered India’s constitution in 2019 to do away with the symbolic autonomy of the administrative region of Jammu and Kashmir, it cracked down hard on the separatist movement in the region, jailing thousands of people. The Jamaat, having long been at the vanguard of the movement, was a prime target. Schools associated with the group were ordered shut and the properties of many members were seized in an attempt to curtail its reach and operational capabilities.
As recently as February, the Indian government said that the Jamaat was “continuing to be involved in fomenting terrorism and anti-India propaganda for fuelling secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir, which is prejudicial to the sovereignty, security and integrity of India”.
This is what makes the Jamaat’s participation in the election perplexing, and even experts in the region are divided over what it means. Noor Baba, a renowned Kashmiri political scientist, says it could be a tactical move on the part of a minority within the movement – contesting the election as independents in the hope of “protection or rehabilitating themselves after the suffering they have endured”.
The decision to join the fray, he suggests, may not have involved the group’s jailed leadership. As a result of internal divisions in the past, Prof Baba says, the Jamaat has suffered at the hands of both the Indian authorities as well as the militants. Similar divisions may have cracked open again.
“There are many questions,” he tells The Independent. “Is the top leadership, which is in jail, on board with this or is it not?”
Another theory is that the decision stems from the Jamaat’s desire to have the anti-terror ban lifted. There have been reports about conversations between the Jamaat and intermediaries of the Indian government such as Altaf Bukhari, head of a local political party.
Ahead of this election, Omar Abdullah, the former chief minister of the former state, had urged the Narendra Modi government to lift the ban on the Jamaat to enable its participation in the assembly election. Mehbooba Mufti, another former chief minister and president of the People’s Democratic Party, said she would be “happy” to see the Jamaat return to the electoral arena.
Indian political analyst Apoorvanand Jha, however, sees a more sinister play at work. He says fielding independent candidates is part of a broader strategy of Modi’s BJP to weaken mainstream political parties such as the National Conference and the Congress and reap the dividend.
“The BJP’s aim is to install a government headed by a Hindu chief minister. That can be achieved by securing as many seats as possible in the Jammu region and fielding as many independents as possible in the valley [of Kashmir], making them win and then taking their support to form the government,” he tells The Independent.
The BJP is seeking to control Kashmir politically by creating chaos, he says. “To achieve that,” he adds, “the BJP can do anything. It can go to any extent, play any game, collaborate with the radicals, collaborate with separatists.”
The Independent has contacted the BJP for comment.
India has long held up Kashmir, its only majority Muslim territory, as a symbol of its secularism. But when the BJP government revoked its autonomy, Kashmiris accused the Hindu nationalist party of trying to change its religious demographic by settling Indians from elsewhere in the region.
Mr Jha says the BJP wants to win the election in order to show its core Hindu base that “see, this is a Muslim-populated area which we have now annexed”.
The candidates backed by the Jamaat maintain that their election participation is about local issues.
“Ideologies work in time and space. We have to be accommodative and flexible,” Talat Majeed, who is contesting the Pulwama constituency, told reporters recently.
Another candidate, Sayar Ahmad Reshi, says their participation in the election is necessary to fill a political vacuum created by regional parties such as the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party.
The Jamaat’s participation seems to have enthused some pro-India factions in Kashmir. “This election is unique in recent times because the banned Jamaat-e-Islami is openly backing and campaigning for independent candidates owing allegiance to it,” Mr Abdullah said in an interview with the Hindustan Times. “This is a huge change from previous elections. Otherwise, ever since I have seen politics here from 1996 onwards, the Jamaat has been at the forefront of trying to stop people from voting.”
Ali Mohammad Watali, a former police chief of Kashmir, isn’t as enthused. The Jamaat was “pro-Pakistan and pro-terrorism”, he was quoted as saying by Frontline magazine. “Now they have changed their stance suddenly. It looks like this is being done by the agencies so that the BJP can form a government here with the help of new political fronts, including the Jamaat-e-Islami.”
“Agencies” is a catch-all term used in Kashmir for the intelligence, security and surveillance apparatus of the Indian state.
The Jamaat candidates have indicated their willingness to form alliances, before or after the election, with any party that works to “restore dignity to the people of Jammu and Kashmir”.
Prof Saddiq Wahid, a senior visiting fellow at the Centre for Policy Research think tank in New Delhi, tells The Independent the BJP’s actions in Jammu and Kashmir since the revocation of its autonomy have been aimed at creating confusion and chaos. “How is Jamaat suddenly into the picture?” he asks.
He fears that the political landscape of Kashmir is being manipulated to dilute local representation and prevent self-governance.
“They do not want the people of Jammu and Kashmir to have a government that will allow them to govern themselves,” he says, referring to the Indian government.
The fundamental question, though, is whether people will trust the candidates backed by the Jamaat, Prof Baba points out. “How many people will vote for them, support them?”

In my head I'm calling this "its glory is all moonshine"
In which the most feared agent of the IMF requests uppies.
~~~
'Just get in the goddamn car, you fun-sized pain in my ass,' Luther bellowed. Ilsa tried not to flinch, but Luther had an impressive set of lungs. He'd been accepted to the Manhattan School of Music to sing opera, she'd heard, but had elected to attend MIT instead. What a different world it would be if Luther Stickell had gone onto the stage.
She and Benji and Ethan would probably be dead, for a start.
They were standing (or sitting, in Ethan's case) outside the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, where they'd all been unceremoniously deposited following the mission in Kashmir three days ago. Ilsa had a somewhat disoriented memory of the journey here — 'Spot of concussion, I should think,' a cheerful round-faced doctor had told her — but the last day and a half was clear enough: dozing in one of the chairs in Ethan's room, playing pinochle with Benji at a nearby cafe, arguing with Luther about which season of Call the Midwife was best while they floated lazily in the hotel pool.
'You're not really selling me on this,' Ethan was saying, rolling his wheelchair back and forth. 'The last time I got in a car with you, you drove us off a cliff.'
'You drove a helicopter off a cliff the other day,' Ilsa reminded him. Ethan made the face that she was rapidly associating with him admitting the point but being deeply unhappy about it.
Luther, meanwhile, had finished shoving the last of their things into the boot. 'Do I have to carry you bridal-style? Because I've done it before and I will do it again.'
Ethan gave him a long look, then lifted his arms. 'What did your daughter used to call it?' he asked. 'Uppies?'
'Fuck you, Hunt,' Luther said, stomping over to the car. 'I'm driving.'
'Do I get shotgun?' Ethan called after him.
'Up your ass, maybe.'
Ilsa glanced over at Benji. 'Are they always like this?'
'Usually worse, I'm afraid,' he muttered back.
'I thought they were just catty with each other because of — you know, the job.'
'No, he's been verbally abusing me for almost twenty-two years,' Ethan said, absently tilting his wheelchair until Benji, impatient, hip-checked the back of it and sent Ethan crashing back down to all four wheels. 'And this guy's been physically abusing me for thirteen.'
'Twelve,' Benji corrected. 'And genuinely, Ethan, please remove thine arse from the wheelchair and get in the car.'
'You haven't told me where we're going,' he said, tilting again. Ilsa was almost impressed by how deeply irritating he was. Three days ago he'd been half-dead on that mountain; now he was trying to get his own colleagues to kill him.
'America,' she informed him, righting his chair a bit more gently than had Benji; Ethan still looked outraged at the presumption. 'You are, according to the doctors, in need of rest and relaxation.'
'I don't know what you've heard about America, but it's not a very restful place right now,' Ethan observed.
Benji made an irritated noise in the back of his throat, like he'd swallowed an eggroll sideways. 'Please, for the love of all that is holy in this world, get in.'
'Well, since you used the magic word,' said Ethan, levering himself upright. It looked painful and ill-advised. 'Am I supposed to be doing this?' he asked, wobbling slightly.
Ilsa got under his right arm as Benji grabbed for his left. 'We'll have to ask Luther when the last time you asked if you were supposed to be doing something,' she said, and his soft chuckle was warm in her ear.
'I get no respect,' he murmured, then complained loudly when she shoved him into the backseat and took shotgun for herself.
The camp got a little bit constricting to someone like me who always wanted to get out of school. I used to sag off and go into the Liverpool Cathedral graveyard. We would go and sunbathe and smoke loose ciggies, which were called 'Loosies' (Lucys) at 2d a time from the tuck shop. So when I got out to Maharishi's I got a bit constricted and I found a way I could bunk out of the camp. Because you weren't allowed to go out, you actually had to ask permission, 'Can I go into New Delhi, Maharishi?' 'Why?' I was standing there, tending to think, Why not? - you know, I thought, I'm going to sag off. So I got down to the Ganges a few afternoons. I remember playing by the banks of the Ganges, which was rather nice, just like a kid, it was such a nice day. I just thought, I'd rather be on holiday.
