thinking about how much better the maze runner series could’ve been if thomas and teresa were siblings.

the absolute agony teresa must’ve felt being so close to her brother, but unable to tell him she’s his sister ? the inner turmoil putting him through the trials in order to find a cure to the disease that so cruelly took their parents ? her inner struggle with turning the only family she has left against her for the cure would be so INTERESTING.

it would also be a really interesting parallel and personal struggle for teresa when they meet sonya. she KNOWS she’s newt’s sister, but she can’t tell them.. god does she want to, though. it would break her heart into a million pieces seeing them interact like strangers when she witnessed first-hand just how deeply newt cared for sonya. for lizzie.

Teresa's death was so much more impactful in the books. In the movie, she saves Thomas and dies. But it's not as meaningful because she did have enough time to join the rest and save herself. Meanwhile, in the book, they are running towards safety and a falling piece of debris almost kills Thomas, but she pushes him out of the way, letting herself die in his place. It was a beautiful and heartbreaking moment that solidified Teresa's character and ideals.

You know the “no homo”-fication of very close same sex relationships in books, movies and TV shows? Like, when they say ‘you’re like a brother/sister to me’? I’m absolutely losing my ass over how it was done in The Maze Runner. Thomas never ONCE “no homo”s Newt, HE DOES however “no hetero” Teresa in The Fever Code..

yeah romantic thomesa angst is so good but what if i have a wip where thomas tries to deal with his twin sister (movie!)teresa's betrayal and to cope with the fact that whatever they do they'll always be related, two sides of the same coin, opposites but still the same, and slowly begins to despise himself as he realizes it was never about saving the world or saving his friends and always about saving her. what then.

aka: if thomas would sacrifice the world without hesitation to save teresa and teresa would sacrifice thomas without hesitation to save the world, which one of them is the bad guy ?

Some nights Thomas thinks he hates Teresa more than he has ever hated anyone else, thinking of the disease growing in Newt's veins and the emptiness in Minho's eyes after they got him back. He thinks of the lone survivors of the trials and of the ones that didn't make it, thinks of orphaned children around the world, and of grief-stricken people cradling their loved ones' lifeless bodies. What he does not think of is the guilt gnawing at his chest, knowing that he wouldn't hesitate to send all these people to hell and back just to hold his baby sister in his arms again. What he does not think of is how hate is a word he doesn't quite understand.

thomas tries to blame himself for wanting to forgive teresa but he cannot help it, still seeing her as the terrified little girl he had to protect once their family abandoned them, succumbing to sickness, because despite his memory loss, his unconditional love and protectiveness still stuck with him

Thomesa (Thomas x Teresa): 147284892/10 i will fight you on this. they were literally so precious and tragic. it was like the universe had decided their destiny, but at the end of the day thomas never stopped loving her and neither did she stop loving him. she betrayed everyone for the greater good but redeemed herself to save HIM. i know she made some extremely questionable choices but goddamn theyre always slept upon. thomesa my beloved, they hated you but i never will 😭💔

Newtmas (Newt x Thomas): 3/10 (i can feel the hate radiating towards me) listen. im completely fine with people going batshit crazy over them. but personally? no. seriously, i never understood the overhype and appeal for newtmas. i can completely understand if newt was in love with thomas all this time, but the idea of them being together? nah. i just never saw any sort of romantic tension between them. like, im not being a full-on hater, but i saw them like platonic soulmates. their friendship is literally to die for (ahem ahem newt ahem 💀) and i wish I had a loyal friend like newt. but romantically? nah.

Trenda (Thomas x Brenda): 5/10 tbh they were pretty mid. i mean i can totally see them ending up together post the death cure, but their chemistry felt too forced at times. their friendship dynamic tho? TOP. TIER.

Thominho (Thomas x Minho): 10/10 the close friendship. the trust they have in each other. the things theyve lived thru together. the lengths thomas went to save minho. if thomas was bisexual hed definitely go for minho. CHEFS KISS AAAA

Nalby (Newt x Alby): 7/10 now this is a newt ship that had sm wasted potential. the fact that alby was the first person ever who newt befriended and trusted. the fact that alby was always stern to everyone BUT newt. the fact that they had one of the strongest mutual trust in the glade. the fact that newt was distraught and ready to throw hands with the grievers after they killed alby in the books. they just didn't have enough time. their dynamic i can't 😭

Newtenda (Newt x Brenda): 8/10 NOW LOOK I KNOW NEWT IS GAY AND I RESPECT THAT but i never knew that while watching the movies and reading the books. like seriously, i thought he was straight for the longest time, and the idea of newt ending up with brenda is weirdly wholesome to me. they share similar experiences of going thru hell while being infected and idk i just enjoy this ship very much. if newt wasn't gay, he shouldve definitely ended up with brenda lmao

Brenally (Brenda x Gally): 6/10 same case as newtenda, but they needed more development. otherwise post tdc theyd be so cute :3

Minally (Minho x Gally): 4/10 nah. just, nope. i can see strong friendship and respect for each other throughout tmr and post tdc, but as a ship... pretty bland so nope.

Minewt (Minho x Newt): 8/10 oh yep. absolutely. theyve known each other maybe not as long as nalby, but the things they went thru in tst and tdc... and the efforts newt was ready to make to save minho- like my boi was freaking infected but he chose to focus on saving minho over himself 😭 and minhos reaction on seeing newts dead body just 💔 if this ain't peak idk what is...

Sonyaris (Sonya x Aris): 9/10 best friends? check. immediate relief on finding the other was alive? check. her taking care of him when he got injured? check. him standing up for her? check. both survived the horrific events thrown upon at them? check. what's there not to like?? they just needed more screentime together lol

Thomally (Thomas x Gally): 2/10 nope. too much toxicity, if im being honest. i mean, they did end up working together and becoming somewhat friends at the end, but idts thomas would ever be able to forgive gally for killing chuck. chuck was basically thomas' baby brother. im sure thomas, despite having gotten over chuckie's death, still finds it extremely unfair how gally got saved but chuck didn't.

Which ships qualify as rareships?

All ships with less than 150 fics where they are the main ship posted to ao3.

Qualify: Brenderesa, Soniet, Minally, Nally, Trenda, Nalby + all other possible ships you can think of!

Don't qualify: Thomesa, Thomally, Newtmas, Thominho, Minewt, Thominewt

When does the event take place?

The bingo runs throughout the month of May - May 1st to May 31st.

When posting, tag this blog and add the tumblr tag #rareshipbingo2024. Indicate which square your submission fills.

Fic and Artwork needs to be original, that means created for the event.

Any submission types are welcome for the Rarepair Bingo. fanart, fic, fanvids, moodboards, podfics - knock yourselves out!

The AO3 board however can only be filled with fic.

All topics are allowed, the one important thing is to tag your works appropriately. With darker themes err on the side of caution. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out.

If you post nsfw fics to tumblr, make sure you put the text under a read more break (just type :readmore: and hit enter).

You must be 18+ to submit explicit content.

I will be marking all nsfw submissions with the community label for sexually explicit content, so those who don't want to see nsfw submissions make sure to enable community labels.

This event allows all kind of content regarding maturity and topic - I expect followers and participants to practise good fandom culture and adhere to the don't like don't read principle. No bashing ships or tropes you personally don't like.

FAQ

Is there a minimum word count for fics? No.

Are poly ships allowed? Yes.

Can one submission count for multiple squares from the same board? No. You have to decide which square you want to "use" your submission on, even if it combines prompts.

Can one submission fount for 2 squares on different boards? Yes! Eg if you write a fic for the square "poetry" and it's also the first fic for a ship, it can count for both the poetry square and the "write the first fic for a ship".

Can I submit WIPS? Yes.

Can I submit new chapters of a current WIP? Yes. If you have a rareship fic that you've been dying to continue, feel free to use the bingo as a motivator!

When is the reblogging perios? May 1-31st.

How does the Extra Rare Advanced AO3 Bord (For The Very Insane) work?

All the AO3 squares are to be filled in regards to the AO3 tag before April 22 - today.

Example: if you want to write a Rachel/Miyoko fic, and someone coincidentally would post one before the start of the bingo, your Rachel/Miyoko fic would still count for the "Be the first to write a ship" square.

Similarly, and using the same example as before, if 2 bingo participants decided they wanted to write Rachel/Miyoko, the person who posts their submission second would still get to fill the "Be the first to write a ship" square.

This applies to all AO3 squares:

If your fic is longer than all the fics posted before April 22, it fills the "Write the longest existing fic for a ship" square.

If before April 22nd there was no "General Audiences" rated fic for the rareship of your choice, your fic fills the "Be the first to write a rating no one has written for the ship before" square.

If you need help using the AO3 filtering system to figure out if you would be the first to write for a ship or for any of the other AO3 squares, drop this blog an ask and I'll help you out! I know not everyone is familiar with AO3 and I want this event to be open to everyone, including AO3 newcomers.

there are a number of things that thomas is grateful for in the safe haven. safety is one of them; good food is another. alcohol is certainly up there too - adults here know how to make it better than whatever the hell gally makes, and the honey wine tastes sticky sweet on thomas’ lips as he takes a long gulp, feeling it warm and pool in his gut.

he’s thankful for lots of things, but none of them compare to how thankful he is for his lover.

two pairs of honeyed laughter ring out across the beach; newt and sonya sit together, heads bowed, arms linked as they lean against a bench on the sand, tucked into a blanket. the more thomas looks at them, the more he can’t believe they didn’t notice it before.

newt has a sister, and in some weird way, so does he. teresa flops in the sand beside him, grinning wildly, hair untamed and lips kissed pink. “i still can’t brenda at cards,” she tells him, stealing a sip of his wine. “so i thought i would come save you from your lovesick stares. and your worrying.” her eyes, a bright cerulean, flit down to his pocket. “got the ring?”

thomas grins. “nah.” he points to newt across the beach, and a copper band glints prettily on his finger from across the fire, green sea glass hammered in. “he found it last night, the bastard. all but put it on himself.”

teresa squeals, her own silver band glimmering boldly, a tigers eye stone matching the colour of brenda’s eyes. “to be fair, i doubt he’d let you get down on one knee.” she kisses his cheek. “congratulations,” she murmurs. “let me walk you up the aisle, it’ll be hilarious.” she pats his knee, and then she’s off to pester her wife.

thomas hums, watching her, another thing he’s grateful for, and -

newt’s not next to sonya anymore.

he smiles before he feels the sand shift beside him. he lifts his arm immediately, and newt snuggles into him immediately. “sonya told me to tell you that she’s not pleased you didn’t ask her for my hand. she says she wants my virtue protected.”

thomas snorts. “virtue, huh? sure, yours is definitely still there.” he kisses the unruly tangle of blonde hair, breathing in newt’s eucalyptus and sea salt soap. he’s never been more grateful for anything in his life - newt alive and breathing and so in love with him. if newt was alive and hated him, thomas would still be saturated with relief and gratitude. newt deserves everything. thomas intends to give him everything. there’s a flush to newt’s cheeks, a content glance in his eyes, an honesty in his smile that’s appeared through the wearing of his defences. thomas worked harder to get to newt than he did to get inside the last city, and his victory tastes sweet as he tips his head down to capture newt’s mouth in his.

thomas thinks often about gratitude. he remembers weeping his thanks to imaginary gods when the blackness creeped away from his fiancé’s eyes to reveal eyes the colour of their morning coffee. he remembers gasping relief when teresa was pulled up into the berg with him, out of the fire and into brenda’s arms. he remembers tasting newt for the first time, new and timeless all at once as they kissed.

when they pull away, newt hums once. “shall we go to bed?” he asks, tone saturated with mischief.

oh, how they love.

“go on then,” thomas murmurs back, beaming. “i love you,” he whispers.

he’s grateful for a lot of things. but newt led him here. he’ll always be the most grateful for him.

helloooo i have a question about rarepair!! can it be platonic ships?

i got this question, thought about it and yes, i will allow platonic ships also. i will extend this to friendships or any sort of other platonic relationships too.

however, since this is still a rarepair event, only for the ships/character combinations that are allowed as rareships. for example, thomesa doesn't qualify as a rareship, so fics centered around thomas and teresa friendship will also not count.

a bit of a tricky decision to make, but since the goal of this event is to get people thinking of dynamics outside of the ones that are most prominent in fandom it feels like the right call to make.

also, note that the platonic relationship explored must be the main focus of the fic! you can't submit for example what is essentially a thominho fic with eg teresa as minho's best friend and sidekick. the platonic relationship must be the centerpiece of the fic.

this is unfortunately the sad truth about both ships. i do think that after newt died thomas did (maybe ?) love him more romantically than platonically, but that doesn’t change the fact that teresa WAS his everything like you said !! and that’s also why the “but the sun was too focused on the earth” trend i think is also SOO coded for thomesa and newtmas bc it’s so true. thomas had so much love for teresa that he couldn’t see any love for newt.

i love newtmas but it’s painfully obvious that thomas was so in love with teresa. it’s so sad

I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t ship Newtmas. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it, I just don’t ship it. This happens a lot where people completely undermine platonic love in fandoms and assume that two close friends are in love romantically.

I have been called homophobic for not shipping Newtmas, but really, I would do this for any ship, no matter the sexuality (and this, by the way, is coming from a bisexual person). While I don’t care for the ship Thomesa, I can see that they have actual romantic chemistry, as opposed to this one. Thomino, a ship that I do like, does, in my opinion, have actual chemistry as well (they literally said ‘I love you’). 

Hate me if you want, but I just don’t ship it.
