reader x dealer rafe! watching the stars while high
Tumblr media
╰┈➤ star gazing with dealer!rafe
warnings: mentions of drug use, swearing.
summary: dealer!rafe finds maybank!reader stargazing on the beach by herself.
“yo bare, you seen y/n?” rafe called, nodding towards his friend. looking up, barry chuckled, beginning to notice rafe’s infatuation with the pogue. “she went off that way, she’s high as shit man..” he laughed, winking at rafe as he sighed.
nodding in acknowledgment, rafe followed the direction of barry’s hand, feeling a slight chill as he moved away from the bonfire.
his head turned as he stumbled along the beach, his feet not so steady on the sand. the coast was just about empty, aside from her small figure in the distance, the only light being the end of her joint.
nearing her relaxed frame, the corner of his mouth threatened a smile as his eyes met hers. “hey rafe..” she smiled sweetly, eyes fluttering between open and closed.
he watched in awe as he cheeks hollowed slightly while she smoked, the same smoke exiting through her plump lips.
“why are you all the way down here, by yourself?” he asked, his head tilting when her glassy eyes reflected the moonlight. “hmm, i dunno, i think i just prefer the peace and quiet..” she sighed, falling back to lean on her elbows.
she was nothing like her brother, well, for the most part. sure, she enjoyed a bit of weed, the odd party etc, but she wasn’t obnoxious and social the way he was, y/n maybank was much more reserved, to rafe’s surprise.
he didn’t know her amazingly well, though they had known of eachother their whole lives. that’s just how it is living on an island, everyone knows everyone.
“you mind if i sit?” he asked, almost tripping over his feet as he gestured to the empty space next to her. “not at all, go ahead”
nodding, he situated himself next to her, facing the ocean while his arms rested on top of his knees. “want some?”
he smiled, taking the joint from her hand before mimicking her own actions, inhaling and exhaling smoothly before stubbing it out in the sand.
he watched as she lay back into the sand, the hood of the huge jumper protecting her hair from getting sandy. “you know, rafe cameron, you’re not as bad as people say you are..” she hummed, her eyes scanning across the clear night sky.
cocking an eyebrow, he mimicked her actions but turned to face her. “is that supposed to be a compliment?”
“well i’m just saying, we both know my brother hates you, but i don’t really understand why” she chuckled slightly, it wasn’t really a question, more of a statement. he hummed in response, turning back to look at the same sky.
“look! a shooting star! quick- make a wish!” she beamed, pointing lazily at the bright light flirting across. they sniggered as they both closed their eyes, childishly making a wish.
“what’d you wish for?” he asked curiously. her mouth fell open in feigned shock for a second, swatting his chest playfully. “it won’t come true if i tell you!”
“i’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours..” he smirked, propping himself up face her once again. his eyes scanned her features, admiring the way her glossy lips glistened under the light of the moon and how her lashes fluttered when she blinked.
“hmm, deal” she giggled, rolling onto her side to look at him. “i wish for a treehouse” his brows furrowed in confusion at her words. “a treehouse?”
“not just any treehouse, a special one. one full of books i love, and fairy lights, and blankets, ooh! and a record player, and maybe even a rolling station!” she gushed, fidgeting with her fingers and a sudden wave of vulnerability washed over her.
“why do you want a treehouse so badly?” he laughed, still not satisfied with her answer.
“well, when i was younger, i used to beg my dad to build me one, everyday i’d ask him about it, and everyday he promised he’d buy the plasterboards on the weekend, but he never did. eventually, jj started building me one, when we were about 14, but the project just got abandoned, i suppose he’s too busy these days anyways..”
rafe felt his chest tighten as the sadness in her voice became more obvious, and her fidgeting fingers danced around the hem of her hoodie. “anyways, moving on, what’s your wish?” she asked, quickly glazing over the fact that she’d just opened up to rafe cameron.
“oh, umm, well..i wish, to take you on a date..” he sighed, smiling sheepishly. “a date?” she beamed as shock settled over her brows. “you, rafe cameron, are asking me, a pogue, on a date?” she shrieked, giggling.
“hmm, when you put it that way, i guess not” he joked, amused at her offended stare. “i’m joking, yes, of course i do”
y/n felt slightly skeptical for a moment, she liked rafe, weirdly enough she enjoyed his company, but she couldn’t help but think about all the things her brother had said about him.
“look, i know. i know your brother’s probably told you horror stories about me, but just give me a chance to prove that i’m nothing like he says i am..”
nodding, she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. “okay, sure..”
“tomorrow at eight o’clock?”
“tomorrow at eight o’clock it is”
giggling, they fell back onto the sand once more, their hands slightly grazing one another’s as they lay there contently.

Drywall Subcontractor
Why You’d Need/Want to Hire a Drywall Subcontractor Near Me
When embarking on a construction or renovation project, the myriad of decisions and details can often be overwhelming. One of the crucial aspects that can significantly influence the quality and efficiency of your project is the choice of subcontractors. Among these, hiring a drywall subcontractor near you stands out as a critical decision. Drywall is a fundamental component of any building project, serving both structural and aesthetic purposes. In this article, we will delve into why you’d need or want to hire a drywall subcontractor, the benefits they offer, and how their expertise can elevate your project to new heights.
The Importance of Drywall in Construction
Drywall, also known as gypsum board or plasterboard, is an essential building material that forms the interior walls and ceilings of homes and commercial buildings. It serves several functions, including:
Structural Integrity: Drywall provides strength and rigidity to interior walls, contributing to the overall structural integrity of the building.
Insulation: Depending on the type of drywall used, it can provide sound and thermal insulation, enhancing energy efficiency and comfort.
Aesthetic Appeal: Drywall offers a smooth, finished surface that can be easily painted or decorated, allowing homeowners and builders to achieve their desired aesthetic.
Given its critical role in construction, ensuring that drywall is installed correctly and efficiently is paramount. This is where hiring a drywall subcontractor becomes essential.
Expertise and Specialization
One of the primary reasons to hire a drywall subcontractor near you is their expertise in the field. Unlike general contractors who may oversee various aspects of a construction project, drywall subcontractors specialize in drywall installation, repair, and finishing. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, ensuring that the work is done right the first time.
A drywall subcontractor is well-versed in the nuances of drywall types, installation techniques, and finishing methods. They understand the specific requirements for different environments, such as residential, commercial, or industrial spaces. This specialized knowledge translates into superior workmanship, resulting in a smoother, more durable finish that meets or exceeds industry standards.
Efficiency and Time Management
Time is often of the essence in construction projects. Delays can lead to increased costs and prolonged timelines. Hiring a drywall subcontractor can streamline the process significantly. These professionals are accustomed to working within tight schedules and know how to manage their time effectively.
By outsourcing the drywall work to a subcontractor, general contractors and project managers can focus on other critical aspects of the project. Drywall subcontractors bring their tools, materials, and labor force, allowing for a more efficient workflow. Their familiarity with the installation process means they can often complete the job faster than a general contractor or untrained workers, minimizing delays and keeping the project on track.
Quality Workmanship
The quality of drywall installation directly impacts the overall look and feel of a space. Poorly installed drywall can lead to issues such as uneven surfaces, cracks, and even mold growth if moisture is trapped. A skilled drywall subcontractor understands the importance of precision and attention to detail.
They are trained to handle various challenges that may arise during installation, such as dealing with irregular wall shapes or ensuring proper alignment. Furthermore, their experience allows them to foresee potential problems and address them proactively, which is critical in maintaining the integrity of the structure. By hiring a drywall subcontractor, you can rest assured that your drywall will be installed to the highest standards, resulting in a beautiful and durable finish.
Cost-Effectiveness
While it may seem like an additional expense to hire a drywall subcontractor, it can actually be a cost-effective decision in the long run. Skilled subcontractors can prevent costly mistakes that may arise from inexperienced labor. They know how to optimize material usage, reducing waste and ensuring that your project stays within budget.
Additionally, professional drywall installation can save you money on repairs or replacements down the line. If drywall is not installed correctly, it can lead to issues that require significant time and financial resources to fix. By investing in quality workmanship from the outset, you can avoid these costly problems in the future.
Access to Resources and Tools
Drywall installation requires specialized tools and equipment, many of which may not be readily available to DIY enthusiasts or general contractors. Drywall subcontractors come equipped with the necessary tools and materials, including drywall sheets, taping knives, mudding supplies, and more. This access ensures that the installation process is efficient and that the highest quality materials are used.
Moreover, subcontractors often have established relationships with suppliers, which can lead to better pricing on materials. This not only helps keep your project within budget but also ensures that you receive high-quality products that will enhance the durability and aesthetic of your space.
Local Knowledge and Code Compliance
Hiring a drywall subcontractor near you brings an added layer of benefit: local knowledge. Subcontractors familiar with your area are more likely to understand local building codes, regulations, and permitting requirements. This is crucial for ensuring that your project complies with all legal standards, avoiding potential fines or delays.
Local subcontractors are also attuned to the specific challenges and conditions of the area, such as climate considerations that may affect drywall installation. Their understanding of these factors enables them to make informed decisions that can positively impact the project outcome.
Enhanced Collaboration and Communication
Effective communication is vital in any construction project. When you hire a drywall subcontractor, you gain a partner who is dedicated to the drywall aspect of the project. This focus allows for clearer communication regarding timelines, expectations, and potential challenges.
Collaboration between the drywall subcontractor and the general contractor or project manager can lead to a more cohesive and efficient workflow. With everyone on the same page, the chances of miscommunication or delays decrease, leading to a smoother project experience overall.
Conclusion
In conclusion, hiring a drywall subcontractor near you is an essential step for anyone undertaking a construction or renovation project. Their expertise, efficiency, quality workmanship, and access to resources can significantly enhance the outcome of your project. By investing in a drywall subcontractor, you not only ensure that your walls are expertly installed but also contribute to the overall success of your construction endeavor. So, if you're considering a project that involves drywall, don't hesitate to seek out a qualified subcontractor who can help bring your vision to life.

A Comprehensive Guide to Attic Transformation and Conversion
Tumblr media
An attic is a space located on a house's upper level, immediately beneath the roof. When it comes to managing indoor temperatures, attics play a crucial role. They often contain insulation. They are known for having awkward shapes and difficult-to-reach corners, which makes them an excellent option for the storage of less-used items.
Making changes to your attic is a great way to get more living space and raise the value of your home. The current rate of increase in building costs means that extending your existing home is more cost-effective than renovating a newly purchased home from the ground up. An Attic Conversion in Ireland is a great choice for anyone who wants more space. If you look forward to converting your attic into a useful space, read on to learn some basic things.
Have an idea of what it is that you wish to use the space for. Will it be a living space? With or without a bathroom, the presence or absence of natural light and so on.
Set aside a budget for the renovation of the attic and see what is possible within it.
Gain better awareness of the regulations associated with the conversion of attics and get the requirements met in the form of documentation, if any.
Know the property's structure well. The great majority of attic conversions require steel beams. These beams come in different sizes based on how far apart the walls are spaced.
In certain older homes, the centre wall must be a supporting wall to avoid using steel, and instead, new flooring joists must be used to fill the spaces between the front and back wall plates.
Unless the span is twelve feet or shorter, timber beams cannot be used as an alternative to steel beams.
The span that needs to be covered affects the new flooring joists' size as well.
Certain new homes are constructed with structural timbers already installed to simplify attic conversions.
Insulating the attic floor is widely known to be the most cost-effective way to prevent heat loss from your home.
When insulating the space, do not squeeze fibreglass in a space half its size, causing the air to move out of it, as it would ruin its qualities. The fibreglass's effectiveness is diminished, which is due to the air trapped inside.
Quilted foil insulation can be the solution to many problems.
When choosing quilted insulation, how well it fits is entirely dependent on the fitter's expertise.
There needs to be an airtight seal between the insulation and the plasterboard for it to function correctly. If air can be let out through any openings created by careless installers, the insulation will not be effective.
If an attic room has been granted habitable status by the planning department, one is required to adhere to fire safety standards. It includes:
Making the ceilings of the bedrooms fireproof
Adding a special window for use in the event of a fire.
Putting in fire doors with automatic closers for every door in the house.
Putting in a network of smoke detectors around the house.
Seek professional help when needed in order to gain effective and satisfactory results.
If you do not know where to start with it all, fret not. You do not need to search "Attic Conversion services near me" anymore since Crehan Carpentry and Constructions are here to be of assistance. Forerunners in the market of attic renovations. They strive to provide their clients with only the best of services. Trust them to meet all your needs when it comes to attic renovations. A false ceiling, also known as a dropped ceiling or suspended ceiling, is a secondary ceiling installed beneath the main ceiling. It is typically made of gypsum or plasterboard, and it creates a gap between the two ceilings, which can be used for a variety of purposes, including hiding ductwork, wiring, and lighting fixtures. False ceilings are becoming increasingly popular in modern architecture, and they are often used to enhance the aesthetics of a space and create a unique look.
One of the main advantages of a false ceiling is that it allows you to experiment with different lighting options. 1. Recessed Lighting
Recessed lighting is a popular choice for false ceilings. It involves installing small light fixtures into the ceiling itself, creating a sleek and modern look. 2. Cove Lighting

This type of lighting is perfect for creating a relaxing and cozy atmosphere in a living room or bedroom.
3. Pendant Lighting

This type of lighting is perfect for a dining room or a kitchen island, where you want to draw attention to a specific area.
4. Chandeliers

They are typically used in grand spaces, such as ballrooms and grand foyers, but they can also be used in smaller spaces to create a dramatic effect. Chandeliers come in a variety of styles and sizes, and they can be used to create a luxurious and elegant look in a space. This type of lighting is perfect for a formal dining room or a master bedroom.
5. Track Lighting

Track lighting is perfect for highlighting artwork or architectural features in a space, and it can be used to create a dynamic and ever-changing lighting scheme. This type of lighting is perfect for a contemporary living room or a home office.
When considering false ceiling lighting ideas, it is important to keep the cost in mind. The cost of a false ceiling can vary depending on the size of the space, the type of materials used, and the complexity of the design. It is important to work with a professionals who can help you determine the cost of the project and provide guidance on the best lighting options for your space.
Finding a professional for false ceiling near me can be a daunting task, but there are a few things you can do to simplify the process. First, ask for recommendations from friends and family who have had similar projects done in the past. Second, do some online research to find local professionals who specialize in false ceiling design. Third, schedule consultations with a few different professionals to get a sense of their style and approach to the project.
In conclusion, false ceilings offer a variety of advantages beyond just providing a space for lighting fixtures. They can also help to improve acoustics in a room, provide insulation, and hide unsightly ceiling features such as pipes or wiring. Additionally, false ceilings can add value to a property and increase its visual appeal.
When choosing a false ceiling design, it is important to consider the overall style and feel of the space. For example, a sleek and modern false ceiling design may not be appropriate for a traditional or rustic-style room. It is also important to consider the color scheme of the space and how the false ceiling will fit into that scheme.
Another important consideration is the height of the false ceiling. A higher ceiling may require more lighting fixtures to adequately light the space, while a lower ceiling may limit the types of lighting fixtures that can be used. It is important to work with a professional who can help you determine the ideal height for your false ceiling and provide guidance on the best lighting options.
Finally, it is important to consider the maintenance requirements of your false ceiling and lighting fixtures. Recessed lighting, for example, can be more difficult to access and maintain than pendant or track lighting. It is important to choose lighting fixtures that are easy to maintain and replace if necessary.
In summary, false ceilings offer a variety of lighting options that can transform a space. From recessed lighting to chandeliers, there are many ways to use a false ceiling to enhance the aesthetics of a room. When considering false ceiling lighting ideas, it is important to keep cost, style, and maintenance requirements in mind. Working with a professional can help you create the perfect false ceiling design for your space and ensure that it is installed correctly and safely.

Discover the Collection of Sturdy All Steel Structures from Well Established Manufactures
By using all steel structures, you can create a structure that is incredibly sturdy. Because of the structural steel it has, industrial shed buildings constructed of structural steel are regarded as the finest industrial sheds. When used correctly, structural steel can assist in creating a sturdy, rigid framework that complies with all building standards.
Tumblr media
The strongest-to-lightest ratio of all the building elements is held by structural steel. The metal carport builders near me do not warp or fracture as a result. A further advantage of a structural steel framework is that it resists the contraction and expansion brought on by changes in the weather, ensuring that the other materials used to create the remainder of the structure will not crack. Steel's inherent qualities enable the construction of manufacturing sheds.
Learn About The Advantages Of Steel-Framed Homes
Straighter & Harder: Your house can flex and deform over time if it was constructed from wood. However, steel has a straighter appearance because it has the best weight-to-strength ratio of any construction substance. Plaster can spread as a result of warped wood frame houses. And screws could start protruding from walls as a result of dampness and expansion. Plasterboard won't fracture, and doors and windows won't jam because steel won't divide, warp, or expand along rooftops, ceilings, and walls. Steel also won't age as wood does, preventing structural collapses that could be fatal and ensuring centuries of liveability.
No Termites: Termites are known as the "silent destroyer" because they typically go unnoticed while consuming your house's interior until it's too late. Although treated wood may be termite-resistant, it must be used with severe poisons and chemicals and degrades over time. The fact that steel-framed homes are completely termite and borer resistant is one of their biggest advantages. Without using toxic pesticides, steel framing offers a lifelong assurance against termites ruining your house!
Effective in terms of cost: You can save money on construction costs and ongoing expenses by constructing with steel frames. While steel can be lighter and simpler for tradespeople to transport and install than timber, which may appear to be the more affordable building material, this tangentially lowers building costs.
Steel provides greater long-term value for your money when you evaluate all the advantages it has over timber framing.

Only, this time, she thought she might have a reason as to why this was happening.  The talks that they’d been having in the bunker having brought the itch to the front of her mind, which is why she’d gotten herself out of there.
She didn’t need them to see her like this.
“Care you share those thoughts darling?”
Madelyn sighed, stopping her pacing and facing Crowley, who she could tell was slightly concerned, but she knew he was going to like this even less.  “I…think I may know why my heat keeps coming early.”
Crowley raised in his eyebrows, a little surprised.  “Oh?”
She held his gaze, her expression serious, which surprised him even more.  “I think I need you to go into rut.”
There was no missing the discomfort that washed over his expression. “Madelyn…”
“I know, Crowley, trust me, I know,” She groaned, looking away from him, her arms wrapping around herself as the itch just seemed to get worse. “But it’s the only thing I can put it down to.  You know as well as I do that an Alpha and Omega relationship, especially a bound pair, need to fill each other’s needs.  I know that ours is far more complicated than that but-”
“Let me stop you there love,” Crowley said quickly.  “We do exactly what we need to.”
“We have a lot of sex,” Madelyn said, looking back at him. “Hell, I’ve certainly never complained, but this is different.  You know it’s different.”
He hid his discomfort well, despite knowing that it was pointless with her.  “The only time that I’ve gone into rut with you, you-”
“Ended up pregnant.”  Madelyn said flatly.  “Bit hard to forget Crowley.”
This time, he did shift uncomfortably.  “Yes, and we discussed it afterwards.  We agreed that it was bad idea.  I’ve kept it well in control for that reason.”
Madelyn folded her arms, her stance no less serious.  She knew what she was asking, she knew what they both went through last time, and she knew that the conversation that followed hadn’t been an easy one.  “You won’t hurt me.”
Crowley held her gaze for a long moment before he stood, shaking his head, going to her.  “No. Absolutely not.  We can…come up with something else.  There’s always more than one solution.”
“Crowley-”
“We can’t discuss this Madelyn,” His jaw clenched.  “I won’t.”
She sighed and stepped to him, her arms wrapping around his neck, her chest pressed to his, knowing full well that he could feel the start of heat approaching quickly.  “Last time was a fluke; it was your first rut in a long time.  This time will be different.  It’s been nowhere near as long, and I’m wanting you to.  I know the risks, I wouldn’t be asking if I didn’t, and I know how…how things went the first time, my memory very much matches yours.  If this fixes this though, if this stops my heat coming stupidly early all the time, then it’s going to make our lives a lot easier.”
His hands rested on her waist, sighing heavily.  “And if it goes wrong?  If…if…”
“Then we deal with it again.”  Madelyn held his gaze.  “You can’t deny that things have changed since then.  Things have been changed for a long while.”
Crowley stared at her.  Things had definitely change, he couldn’t deny that.  Things had changed the moment he’d had to rush her to a hospital at seven months pregnant, the doctors telling him that the baby was killing her, and he suddenly had to face the prospect of being alone again, potentially with a child, depending on whether it survived too or not.  He’d spent so long by her bedside, Madelyn in and out of consciousness, her body being supported by who knew how many drugs but…
He just didn’t know if he could change his stance on what had led to that point.
Crowley was agitated more than usual, everything just felt wrong and the demons around him were more annoying than usual.  His clothes felt painfully tight, and it didn't seem to matter how many times he adjusted his collar, it felt like he was constricting his throat.
“Are...you feeling alright sir?”
He glared at the demon, a trickle of sweat beading down his brow, a flush covering his cheeks.  “If I wasn't getting asked stupid questions, I would be.  Don't you have something better to do?”
The demon hurried off, leaving Crowley growling where he stood, just wanting an excuse to pick some sort of fight, his mind working over all the possible reasons as to why, until there was a strange itch in the back of his mind.
It took a few moments before it sunk in to what was happening, then he could only focus on one thing, grabbing his phone.
I need to see you.
I'm busy.
I need to see you Madelyn.  This is serious.
I'm not here to just answer to you.  Go find someone else to annoy.
Madelyn was alone, Crowley didn't need any more confirmation than that, making her roll her eyes from the table where she was seated as he appeared.
“Honestly, can't you take a-" The words stopped on her lips as she stared at him, her posture changing slowly, cautiously, eyes darting to the door for a moment before looking seriously back at him.  “Are you in rut?”
Crowley could feel himself trembling, barely keeping a hold of his control as her scent washed over him, his teeth gritting together. He hated that his thought had been correct.  “Demons...can't...”
“Uh huh,” Madelyn said slowly, getting to her feet, her body tense, ready for fight or flight, unsure of what to make of the Alpha in the room. “Well, that's certainly what it looks and smells like Crowley.  Now, we agreed to be careful about this.  Can you control it?”
A low growl rumbled through his chest, his head shaking before she finished the question.  He knew what they agreed, but that was before this had happened, that was before her scent wasn't practically driving him out of his mind, his body feeling painfully tight the longer he stood there.  “Need you.”
Madelyn licks her lips, feeling her body respond, but choosing to ignore it.  “We agreed this was a bad idea Crowl-"
His feet carried him forward, not bothered when she backed away, quickly trapping her against the wall, his arms either side of her head, fighting for air in his lungs, each breath drawing in more of her.
She stared at him, her heart racing, his eyes jammed shut, trying to hold onto control.  She'd been there, she knew what it was like, and whatever was now happening to him, hadn't happened in a long time.  “Crowley...look at me.”
With great reluctance, he does.
“I want you to take a step back,” She said, her voice quiet and soft, hoping to appeal to his other side.  “And I want you to take a deep breath for me.”
Crowley's hands tense on the wall for a moment, starting to crack the plasterboard underneath, his eyes flashing red for the briefest of moments. “Can smell how ready you are for me Omega.”
Madelyn swallowed thickly, knowing her body was betraying her, but she needed some control back of this situation.  It wasn’t going to end well for either of them if he just took control. “Crowley, please take a step back from me.”
A low growl leaves him, but he complies, taking a step back and drawing in a deep breath, forcing his gaze away from her.
“Good,” Madelyn lets out a steadying sigh.  “Now, can we please just take a moment to process what is happening here?"
“I'm going into rut,” He growled, still keeping his gaze away from her, his hands clenching and unclenching by his side.  “There's not much more to it than that.”
“I know,” She said quietly.  “But just charging in here like a raging bull isn't going to help anyone. Take a breath for me, focus somewhere else for just a moment.”
He knew what she was trying to do and he knew it wasn't going to work, his body practically shaking with need.  This infuriating woman, his Omega that he'd claimed without thinking, a Winchester through and through, and despite everything, he wanted nothing more than just have her as close as possible to him. He needed to just drown himself in her.
Crowley took a long slow breath, but his focus didn't waver from her, her scent filling his lungs, just making it worse.  He knew he wouldn't be able to hold himself much longer.
“Thank you,” Madelyn still watches him closely, her gaze unsure. “Now, before this comes crashing down around us, let's talk."
“About?”
“About how to handle this.”
He gritted his teeth, resisting the urge to growl.  He knew how he wanted to handle this.
Madelyn let out a slow breath.  “Can you control it at all?”
“No.”
“That’s…troubling.  If I asked you to sit for me-”
His look cut her off, the hunger gleaming in his eyes and making her swallow thickly, shifting uncomfortably on her feet, her body betraying her.  “Okay, point taken.”
He took a step forward, his control slipping further away from him.  “Need you.”
“Crowley-”
“Now.”
Madelyn’s mind tried to work quickly, but his rut was currently overtaking her senses, leaving her conflicted as the answering call pumped through her blood.  This was dangerous, they were both unprepared for something like this, but she was quickly running out of options to try and stop it.
“We can…we can do…something else…”  She tried to make it believable, tried to convince herself as much as him, but it sounded all too weak.
A growl did leave him this time and a full shiver went through her body.  “I’m not giving you an option here Madelyn.”
She licked her lips subconsciously, trying her best to still hold her ground.  “Crowley-”
Crowley's lips crushed into hers, making her whimper against the intensity of the kiss, his body pressing her flush against the wall, needing the contact.  She shudders against him, the thought of talking gone, hands clinging to him tightly.
A low growl rumbles through his chest, the kiss hungry and dominating, needing her more than anything else he had before.  This wasn't part of the plan, this wasn't meant to be like this, and yet as Madelyn moaned against him, he knew that there was going to be no other way this could be.
He needed her.
A gentle hand on his cheek brought Crowley out of his thoughts, Madelyn’s gaze understanding, making him sigh and rest his forehead against hers.  “Whatever do I do with you?  The last few days have just been an absolute roller coaster and I’m not even sure how to even begin processing this.”
Madelyn sighed softly and rested her head against his chest.  “I know, and I hate asking this of you.  I just can’t deny what the itch is telling me.”
His fingers trailed into her hair, brushing softly through it, making her sigh against him.  He’d always made sure she was well taken care of during her heats, giving her exactly what she needed, he took great satisfaction in doing so.  To put his control on the line, to risk her and go back to just base instincts again, it was going to be hard to do, no matter how much she may need it.
“Come here love,” Crowley said softly, pulling her back to lounge where he’d been sitting before, Madelyn smiling softly and allowing him to pull her into his lap.  “Let me…get comfortable with the idea first, then we can talk some more.”
She nodded, getting comfortable, her arms looping around his neck again, leaning in close.  “I can do that.”
Madelyn kissed him, earning a low hum through his chest, and he slowly settled, pulling her flush against him.  They kept themselves unhurried, unworried, but Crowley couldn’t help but think back again on what had happened.
One of his hands buried into her hair and pulled her head back, breaking the kiss, a sharp gasp leaving her and she draws in a deep lung full of air.  Crowley trails open mouth kisses down her jaw and neck, making her breath catch, working down to his mark.  His teeth scrape over it, a shudder going through her, bearing her throat more, trying to twist in his grip to press closer.
A deep, satisfied purr goes through him, nuzzling into her scent, ignoring her restless squirming.  All he could think about was her and what he needed.  “Mine.”
Madelyn whimpers, completely at his mercy, her body throbbing with need, answering the call of his.  With his proclamation, she submitted entirely, her body flushed as her heart races, heat throbbing low in her stomach.  “Alpha…”
Another purr rumbled through him and his full attention turns to the mark, lapping over it, sucking it and nibbling it, making her whimper and squirm against him.  If she got too restless, he would sink his teeth in a little firmer until she stilled, a whimper caught in her throat.
She was going to have to go his pace and whatever his rut demanded.
As a low growl rumbled through Crowley’s chest, Madelyn pulled back slightly, looking down at him, her eyes flicking between his gaze for a moment.  He looked annoyed that he was giving into it, but her gaze softened, letting out a low chuckle as she nudges her nose with his.
“Let me look after you Alpha,” She whispered against his lips.  “Let me take care of you.”
Crowley half growled, half groaned, keeping her pressed as close as possible to him.  “That’s meant to be my job.”
Madelyn laughed and kissed him softly on the lips, slowly trailing down towards his throat.  “I keep telling you that this works both ways.”
He holds back another noise, growing restless under her, especially when she teases her mark on him, his fingers digging a little into her hips.  She was so infuriatingly stubborn at times, and pretending to be so innocent about it just made it worse.
Still, if anything happened to her…
The growl was the only warning Madelyn got before she was spun and slammed against the wall, Crowley pressing again, her head instinctually tilting, still giving him access to his mark.  He doesn’t hesitate to continue to continue to bite over it, making her whimper, which quickly cut off into a gasp as his hand pressed against her clothed core, slowly rubbing against her, quickly soaking through her pants, making a grumble go through him, pressing his hips closer, slowly starting to grind against her.
Whimpering, Madelyn forces herself to keep still, enduring the steadying press of his fingers against her core, small trembles going through her body as he rubs against her clit.  Her clothes were feeling too confining, too tight, and she wanted nothing more than for both of them to be free of them, to feel skin against skin. Heat beat at her, curled low in her stomach, and in the back of her mind she knew that this was going to start her heat early, that this was going to pull her over the edge of what they’d discussed that was going to be their relationship.
Crowley growled low and his hand slipped into her pants, practically chasing away the last of all rational thought, his fingers quickly slipping through her folds.  His mind was a blur of need, all he could think of was how much he needed her, and feeling how ready she already was, just solidified it all in mind.
“Mine.”
His teeth sunk deep into the mark, making her yelp, a shudder going through her, barely aware as blood soaked her clothes.  A whimpering whine built in her throat, only growing louder as his fingers left her, hooking into the band of her pants ripping them apart, letting them fall, the cool air against her core making her shiver and press back against him.
Crowley growled against her throat, pressing her firmly against the wall, leaving her nowhere to move as he gave his own pants the same treatment.  There was a shake in his hands as he grabbed her hips, his feet forcing her legs apart, slipping himself between them.
Madelyn trembled against him, keeping herself still, her heart hammering in her chest.  Heat pulsed through her body, only growing in intensity as his cock nudged against her folds.
“Alpha…”
Her high pitched moan made his teeth sink in further, a strangled groan caught in his throat, thrusting deeply into her in one motion.
Crowley bit the inside of his cheek hard, drawing blood, Madelyn’s teeth grazing over the mark, drawing him out of memory he’d much prefer to forget.  He could feel her smiling against him, and he knew she was doing all this on purpose.
“We can make it better this time,” She purred against him, knowing all too well what he’d been thinking about.  “I want you too.”
The blood in his mouth was not helping the situation at all, his senses starting to give in to the need of the situation, and as her teeth sunk in just a little harder, he knew he was done for.
As he grabbed her and forced her lips back to his, trapping a moan in her throat, from the need for him and the taste of blood, he had to force down the memories of what had happened. It still hurt him, as it had since he’d realised that he actually did care for her, to think of taking her the way he had, of how much control he did lose.  She’d had no choice but to yield to him and whatever he wanted, and he could still remember all too clearly the bite marks and bruises that he’d left scattered across her skin, many of the bites having broken her skin.
Forcing it all away, he just held her to him, the kiss hungry and slowly drawing out their baser instincts.  She was everything to him, and he finally reasoned with himself that if this was going to help her, then it was worth it.
Crowley’s hips rocked up into her, making Madelyn moan, responding with her own as she breaks the kiss for just a moment.  “That’s it Alpha, I’ve got you.”
He groaned, her lips quickly returning to his, letting it rumble low through his chest.  There was no one else either of them wanted, and although it was far from perfect, it was good enough for them.

Stark Spangled Banner O/S: A Grievous Burden
Tumblr media
Summary: Post Sokovia Steve struggles to deal with the deep routed effects Wanda’s magic has on his mind as once more his dreams become haunted with the ghosts of his past.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark
Warnings: Bad language, angst, night terrors...
A/N: As part of SSB’s Birthday celebrations I decided to publish this little one shot/drabble which sits between Ch 24- Like The Old Man Said...Together, and Ch 25- All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go.
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers was no stranger to bad dreams. But his recurring nightmares had been a thing of the past, certainly since he’d started sleeping next to Katie at night. Her presence comforted him, allowed him to sleep for the most peacefully. But ever since getting back from Sokovia both Katie and Steve had been plagued by bad dreams. Katie’s seemed to be less vivid, mostly centred around the moment she had thought their time was up until Fury had shown up, but Steve’s subconscious for some reason didn’t seem to take him anywhere near Sokovia. Instead, he was catapulted back in time to various points during the war. It was unnerving for him but mostly, they were just that, bad dreams...until one night, for the first time he could remember, he suffered a full scale hallucinating night terror.
The first Katie knew of it was when he was pinning her down against the mattress and shielding her from something.
"Steve." she said gently. Nothing, he simply flattened himself against her further, right arm curled around her head.
"Stay down," he ordered firmly.
"What's going on?" she asked softly, still coming round from the sleep he had roused her from.
"Air strike, men in the hall.”  He said, turning to her "I'll head for the door, cause a distraction. You get to the bathroom, get in the tub, cover your head."
She listened intently, then realised what he had said. Air Strike. He must have been dreaming he was back in the war again. She let out a breath and relaxed, reaching up to take his face in her hands.
"Stevie, nobody's there. Everything's quiet."
"You can't hear them?" he looked at her frowning.
"Sweetheart, do you trust me?" she asked.
He nodded. “With my life, you know this Katie...”
"Ok, well, I promise you - there's no air raid, nobody in the hall."
For a moment, Steve just stared at her, his face wracked with confusion. Then, swallowing hard, he closed his eyes. After a moment he raised his head to look around before his face fell back on hers as her thumbs gently moved in long arcs down the sides of his face.
"Steve?"
With a shuddering breath, he pulled himself up, reaching for his shield by the bedroom door. Picking it up he listened for a moment before throwing the door open and he walked out into the hallway. Katie sat in bed listening to the sound of various other doors being opened and shut as he meticulously swept the whole of their floor, checking windows and closets until he ended up back in their room.
His back and chest were both glistening with sweat. He looked at her, his eyes wide before he went into the en-suite and she heard the tap running and the sound of water being splashed against what she assumed was his face. She gave him a few minutes before she followed him, where he was stood leaning forward, forehead pressed to the mirror, chest and shoulders heaving.
“Stevie…” she said gently, as she slipped both her arms round his waist, pressing a kiss to his bare, clammy shoulder. Her touch seemed to do the trick as he took one deep breath and turned to face her.
"Did I hurt you?" he asked his eyes looking at her as the palms of her hands spread across his lower back.
"Of course not." she said, shaking her head.
He wrapped his arms around her and she lay her head on his chest and felt his heartbeat as it gradually evened out. Neither of them spoke for a while.
“Your dreams… they’re getting worse." Katie said gently.
“It'll get better," he finally managed. “You know it's been bad before. It will fade after a while."
Katie knew from experience that everyone dealt with traumatic experiences differently. For example, Tony suffered panic attacks and went completely off the rails post both his soiree in the Afghanistan cave and New York. She tended to take a lot of things as they came and worry about them for a while but after screaming and crying would then give herself a kick up the ass to either change things or deal with them. Steve’s worry seemed to manifest itself two fold. He would either be suffering from the inability to stay calm and therefore would exercise, pounding out frustrations on either the pavement or the punching bags. And then there was this, the nightmares. Normally Katie would wake with his jostling but if she didn’t, he would always shake her awake if he needed her, as that was the agreement they had. She would then help him back to sleep either by talking or they would engage in some other un-coventional means of therapy until both of them were spent and satiated enough to return to slumber.
Katie gently took his hand and led him out of the bathroom turning off the light. As they reached the bed he waited until she was in it, pulling the duvet up over her before snagging a pillow and turning to go.
"Where do you think you're going?"
He shrugged. "Thought I'd camp out on the couch. I don't want to keep you awake."
“No way…” she said, throwing back the duvet “Come on.”
He sighed and climbed in as she opened her arms for him to settle his head on her chest, gently stroking his hair as he swallowed, his breathing steadying as her touch soothed him.
"Where were you this time?" she asked
"Azzano… I think” he sighed “To be honest with you, I saw so many things, the dreams now…they all blur into one.”
“You wanna talk about it?” He took a deep breath “It was just loud, and I was in a building and I couldn’t get out. It was so real. When I woke up I knew where I was. I knew who you were, but I just…I dunno…”
They lay in silence, Katie continually stroking his hair as he nuzzled into her closer. She kissed the top of his head and was pleased when about 10 minutes later she heard his breathing start to lower and his head became heavy. He had managed to drift off.
*****
The next night he woke with a start, but that was it. There was no walking or hallucinating, he merely woke from a bad dream and climbed out of bed for a glass of water. When he came back, there was no talking, but he sought solace in his girl in another way, his lips kissing her hard, his hands reaching out and roving over every bit of her body he could find and he fucked her, hard, losing himself completely. They lay afterwards, sweaty foreheads pressed together and Katie simply held him close as they both came round. Eventually he moved off, pulled her to him and they fell asleep, limbs tanged around one another, his hold tight.
The next few nights he was peaceful, and Katie was hopeful that the terrors had passed, but then, four nights after the first incident he broke his hand.
Captain America could put his fist through a two-by-four with nothing worse than slightly reddened knuckles - but Steve Rogers’  hand hadn't been in a fist. Katie had woken to his hoarse cry of “Buck!!!”, in time to see his outstretched, fingers slamming straight through the plasterboard and into a metal stud in the wall as he flailed out of bed, reaching for a man who had fallen some seventy years earlier.
Katie scrambled over the bed like a shot as he was yelling out for Bucky again and again as he knelt among scattered pieces of plaster and wood, his left arm buried inside the wall up to the shoulder.
"Steve," she tried, but he didn't respond, eyes fixed in a thousand-yard stare, face crumpled with an agony that was more than physical, breath hitching and ragged. She felt the tears spring into her eyes and she was just about to ask FRIDAY to send Tony to help when she heard the door to their penthouse burst open and a few moments later Thor strode into the bedroom dressed in a pair of black sweatpants, hammer in his hand.
“I heard the Captain yell, and…” he trailed off as he took in the situation at a glance and then crouched next to Katie.
“He’s dreaming…” she said gently, “He’s dreaming about Bucky, his friend, falling…”
Thor frowned absently, brushing his fingers across the captain's temples as though he was trying to work out a problem. Then abruptly, he rose and was gone, moving almost silently through the darkness.
Whilst he was gone Katie managed to gently work Steve’s arm out of the wall. His broken hand lay twitching in her lap and she was horribly aware that they would need to set the bones before they healed wrong. Thankfully, Thor wasn’t gone long, and he was not alone when he returned, hand firm around Wanda's shoulder. The girl's eyes were wide and her hair was tangled - obviously she had been sleeping.
"Thor," Katie began to protest as she glanced round at Steve. The last thing he would want would be to come back to reality in the middle of some kind of impromptu party.
Thor held up a hand, pausing her even as he turned his full attention to Wanda
"Do you see?" he asked gravely. "Do you understand now what The Vision told you?"
Trembling, Wanda shook her head even as she went to her knees beside Steve. He was still unresponsive, but his breathing was beginning to laboriously even out and Katie knew he was fighting for control. She started to sweep her hand up and down his back in long, firm strokes in the hope it would bring him back round.
Thor knelt too, sounding as though he were some kind of instructor. "When you allowed Stark's fears to work against him," he began patiently, "you found his weakness and dug deep."
Wanda nodded slowly.
"Our Captain carries a grievous burden as well," Thor continued, "He has been sorely wounded and works to heal, but your incautious workings have torn his memories open."
“Thor…” Katie said gently as a horror stricken look crossed Wanda’s face.
"I am sorry," she whispered. "I didn't know. How can I fix it?"
For the first time, Thor hesitated. "My brother would have known," he admitted in a low voice. "He had the skill, when it pleased him to use it." He paused again, and then continued, hesitating slightly. "You must consider carefully, and proceed as seems good to you."
Biting her lip, Wanda looked up at Katie, her stricken eyes locked onto hers.
“If you can, remind him where he is," Katie said gently. “Just bring him round?”
Hesitantly, uncertainly, Wanda pointed and curled her fingers before Steve’s face and closed her eyes. Tendrils of red light flickered from her hands to his temples, and Katie tensed involuntarily. For a moment, nothing happened. Then Steve’s eyes flew open, and his uninjured hand darted up faster than sight to lock around Wanda's wrist, breaking the connection. She squeaked, startled, and froze.
“Steve…” Katie touched his arm causing him to flinch. It took him a second and then he seemed to realize where he was and what was going on. He let go of Wanda's wrist, and looked around at Katie, then Thor hovering behind the young Sokovian, and finally the familiar surroundings of their bedroom. Eventually he looked back at Wanda for a long moment before nodding once.
"Thanks."
A tear slid down her cheek. "I'm sorry," she whispered hoarsely. "I tried to put everything back in place, but I don't know how."
"Can't fix everything," he assured her, with a twisted smile. His old Brooklyn accent came out very strong in this unguarded moment. "And I wouldn't wantcha t' try. There's things in my head you shouldn't ever hafta see."
Wanda wrapped both her arms around herself. Her eyes still looked haunted. "He was like your brother, wasn't he?" she quavered.
Steve bowed his head as Thor dropped a gentle arm round her shoulders.
"We have all lost brothers," he rumbled, looking at her. "We know your pain. You do not face this alone."
Katie could feel Steve was quivering, exhausted beyond words though he wouldn't show it for the world, and all she wanted to do in that moment was to bind up his hand and then put him to bed. As she looked up to suggest to the others they might want to go she was surprised to see Wanda had squared her jaw with determination and she reached out once more.
"I can fix this, at least."
Steve's hurt hand suddenly glowed with red fire. He jumped, surprised, and then watched with fascination as the crooked fingers began re-align themselves. When the bones were straight again, the fire flickered out, and Wanda staggered to her feet to go, Thor right behind her.
“You ok for a moment?” Katie asked Steve and he nodded. She followed the two of them into the hall and gave a short groan as she saw the door that led to the stairs (which were never used) had been completely kicked off its hinges.
“Sorry.” Thor said, picking up the heavy door “I heard the screams and…well, I didn’t know what was going on.” “Just prop it up as best you can…I’ll let you out in the elevator.”
He propped it up, and dragged the sofa over towards it for good measure.
“I really am sorry…” Wanda whispered, tears in her eyes.
“I know, and so does he.” Katie said, giving her a hug. “He will be fine…” Her attention then turned to Thor as she gave the God a hug. “Thank you.” “Any time Little Stark.” He breathed into her hair, before the 2 of them stepped into the elevator.
Katie looked around, trying to think about how they could explain a broken door plus a hole in the wall to Tony, then she realised she didn’t care. She headed into the kitchen, rummaging through the first aid kit for an elastic bandage to keep his fingers straight and wrapped up safely whilst his fast healing worked its magic.
He was sat on the side of the bed when she re-entered the room, his injured hand cradled in his other.
“Here…” she said, and she gently took his hand as he surrendered to her ministrations.
“Is Wanda ok?” he asked gently.
“Yeah, but I’m more concerned about you.” she said, laying his hand down gently onto my lap. “Baby…” “I’m sorry.” He said softly, laying his head against hers.
“What for?” “This…for scaring you?” “Stop it.” She said sternly “I love you, you idiot, I just want you to be ok.” “I will be…” he smiled softly, his lips catching hers “Given time.”
The next day, Katie dragged Steve out for a walk in Central Park, but first she spoke to Tony about the door and the wall. He was surprisingly sympathetic, and didn’t mention the issue to Steve once. By the time Steve and Katie returned home that afternoon both were fixed, the only evidence any repairs had taken place was the smell of fresh paint and plaster which lingered in the apartment for a few days. What thankfully didn’t linger were Steve’s night terrors. Katie didn’t know what it was that Wanda did, but his bones healed straight and it seemed that his mind had healed somewhat straight too. Whilst he persisted with the odd bad dream, they were getting less and less frequent, and there was no repeat of the two hallucinations he had suffered which was a relief to her, as she knew with time and patience and rest, the dreams would stop as well.

Out of Body: Chapter 3
Didn’t really feel like writing much of a resus scene after recent events, but I already had some stuff written so I worked it in where I could while expanding the story a bit more.
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
************
Jane The ambulance swung into the emergency bay of the major trauma centre, stopping a few feet beyond an assembled team of doctors and nurses. They were already in blue surgical gowns and with the coordination of professionalism and experience, they spread around the back doors and pulled them open, dragging the gurney out. Dave was still pumping the ambu bag while Jane, her sweat slicked fringe sticking to her forehead, handed over the IV bag and monitor to waiting hands before the team ran inside. “What have we got?” The trauma lead asked as he ran his eyes across Laura’s restrained body. His eyebrows raised slightly at the improvised chest tube. “Laura Beckett, 23. Involved in an RTC, sedan vs motorcycle. Fractured femur, query dislocated hip and knee. Fractured wrist as well. Multiple broken ribs and punctured lung, leading to severe haemothorax. Resulted in cardiac arrest, downtime of approximately 25 minutes, reversed after the pressure of the haemothorax was relieved. BPs still low and O2 sat’s barely over 80. Currently sinus tachy at 120.” “Beckett?” The doctor asked, not asking the question out loud. Jane simply nodded. “Ok, lets get her inside, fast beep radiology we need to get a full trauma series ASAP. Let’s get a proper chest tube in, get her on the vent and pack the rapid infuser with TXA, platelets and 2 units of O-neg.” “She’s A-positive.” Jane cut in. “Good, lets get 6 units of that up from the blood bank. Get in touch with cardiothoracics, orthopaedics and neuro for consults.” The rest of the team confirmed their orders as the gurney was pushed into the primary trauma room. After a 3 count Laura was lifted across onto the table, a flurry of action surrounding her as doctors and nurses perform the assigned tasks. The lead eased Jane back. “We’ve got it from here Jane.” She shook her head defiantly, but her voice came out in a whisper. “I’m not leaving her.” “You’ve done your job. And done it well, but you can’t help her in here. Go get cleaned up, you’ll be the first to hear when we have any news.” Jane lingered for a moment, gazing at her sisters body as nurses rapidly stripped away her clothes, discarding them into a bloody heap in one corner of the room. Then her shoulders slumped and her head bowed as she retreated from the trauma room, discarding her gloves into a bin. Dave tried to catch her attention, but she ignored him, heading towards the ladies restroom while pulling out her phone. Ashir Ashir sat at his desk, much of the room shrouded in the late-night darkness. The desk itself was lit by a powerful lamp that starkly highlighted thin tendrils of smoke as they were drawn into the small extraction unit mounted in the window. He peered through the microscope, gently applying more solder to the electronic circuit board he was working on. It wasn’t work that needed to be done right now, but he needed something to occupy his mind. He made a satisfied grunt and shifted the microscope out of the way. He leaned back, stretching and rubbing his eyes, while spinning on his chair. His gaze fell on the other desk in the room. Laura’s desk. It was cluttered, stacks of newspapers, photographs and journals were strewn about in a system that Ashir couldn’t recognise, but his journalist roommate seemed perfectly at home with the mess. The pin board hung on the wall behind the stacks was a different story. It was laid out like a true conspiracy theory board. Over a dozen profile pictures formed the centres of different sections and various colours of string linked articles and reports in a web that looked chaotic at first glance. Looking closer, and with only a small amount of guidance, it began to come together into a cohesive whole. Ashir sighed. He really hoped his roommate was wrong about all this. But even he had to admit the evidence was compelling when presented in the way she had laid it out. That was part of what worried him. She should have been back by now. Or at least have dropped him some form of message. At least she’d told him where she was going. He’d been able to get his own backups into place. She’d probably kill him if she knew about them. As that thought crossed his mind his phone began to ring. He let out a relieved sigh as he prepared to make his concern clear. That was when he saw the caller ID. His hand trembled as he answered. “Ash you were right. She’s in over her head.” Jane’s voice was tight. “What happened?” Ash was already on his feet looking for his keys. “She’s hurt Ash. She’s really hurt.” “I’m coming down there.” He pulled on his jacket then flicked off the light. “Hurry Ash.”
Laura
I heard the noises first. Alarms sounding. Orders being given. I opened my eyes, once again struck by seeing the world in that strange brightness. A nurse was above me, rocking backwards and forwards, her ponytail flicking to and fro with the motion, until she paused for a brief moment. I followed her arms, down to her hands that rested in the slight valley between my breasts.
“Still nothing, resume compressions.” Someone said. The nurses hands suddenly disappeared into my chest. CPR, I was getting CPR again. My heart had stopped once more. The way the nurses compressions passed through my ethereal form was still incredibly disconcerting, so I sat up and looked around. Doctors and nurses surrounded me, but there was a gap at my feet. I managed to scooch past them without passing through anyone, then turned to look my body.
I was naked on the table. And I didn’t look good. My chest was heavily bruised, with tubes sticking out of either side, Jane’s impromptu effort having been replaced by a proper chest tube, an identical one mirroring it. My broken arm and leg had both been splinted and bandaged, though the bandages were already stained through. A urinary catheter had been placed. I was slightly glad I hadn’t seen that happening, someone touching me in such an intimate place.
A large bore IV was in my leg, with other lines into my arms and another one near the base of my neck. Blood and saline were flowing into my body, though as I watched, a nurse pushed some drugs into the central line.
The ecg wires trailed across my chest, leading to a monitor that hug above the trauma table. The line on the monitor was flat. I looked down at my chest, seeing my lifeline still strong and thick. I also saw that my ghostly form was naked too. I instinctively tried to cover myself, despite no one being capable of seeing me.
I looked around for my clothes, shredded and discarded into one corner. I reached out to them, but of course my hand passed right through them. But there was something. A strange feeling, almost like a memory of sensation across my whole body. I reached out again, letting my hand linger within the bundle. The sensation became stronger, growing steadily, and it was almost like I could feel the clothes on me.
I took a deep breath, recalling the meditation techniques my therapist had taught me years ago. How visualising a result can help it happen. I had no idea if it would work, but I’d rather not walk around naked, even if no one could see me. I tried to hold on to the memory of my clothes as I pulled my hand out. I could still feel the clothes on me, and focused on that feeling, blocking out everything else. Slowly, I let out the breath and opened my eyes, looking down at myself. I was clothed. My dark grey t-shirt and similar coloured pants were whole, despite their real counterparts being little more than shreds before me. My black hoody was also on me, unstained by blood like the genuine article.
“We’ve got V-fib.” Someone shouted, dragging my attention back to my body. The alarm had changed, it was familiar enough that I knew what was going to happen next. A doctor, fully gowned and masked, held a pair of black paddles down against my chest. “Clear!” He said, a moment before my naked body jerked on the trauma table. I cringed at the way my legs spread slightly.
“No change. Let’s do another minute of compressions and shock her again.” A nurse immediately had her hands back on my chest, pressing it down, seemingly quite easily. Given how petite the nurse was, my ribs must be really soft.
It was almost enough to turn my stomach, and I instinctively took a few steps back. There was a momentary feeling of resistance, and suddenly I couldn’t see anything. I paused, realising that wasn’t quite right. I could see, there just wasn’t anything too see. Except the papery texture of the back of the plasterboard sheet in front of me, and the treated timbers that were the drywall studs. I was inside the wall. I took another step back, emerging into a corridor.
It was a quiet corridor, empty except for a cleaner at the far end. Yet I could still hear a voice. Quiet, but clear. It was counting. “15…16…17…18…” I grimaced slightly, then plunged back through the wall. The nurse was still pressing down on my chest, and she was mouthing the words, but more to herself. She wasn’t shouting by any stretch, in fact I would be surprised if her words would even carry to where I stood.
So, I can still hear what is happening to my body. Helpful. I glanced down, concentrating slightly to look at my lifeline. It was still strong and steady. How far can it stretch? I remembered Keith telling me to stay close, but the lifeline was thin then, insignificant compared to the almost cable thick line I could see before me now. I made up my mind. I strode across the room, towards the doors, unable to stop myself from hesitating just slightly before I walked through them. Again that slight resistance, more a reminder the wall was there, than something really stopping me, tugged as I passed through. And then I was in a different corridor, busier, but still quiet.
I looked around, hoping to see Jane, but she was not there. I walked down the corridor, trying to figure out precisely where I was, or where I should go. I glanced at the signs, but most of them were mainly just numbers, hanging in front of cubicles or other offshoot corridors. Coloured lines were on the floor, branching out down the corridor behind me. Presumably, I thought, they must all come together at one starting point. I followed them back, dodging a nurse pushing a young man in a wheelchair, a large boot on his foot. Neither of them payed me even a sliver of attention.
“Ok, that’s a minute. Let’s shock her again.” It was the voice of the doctor working on me. “Clear” he said a moment later. I stopped walking as I wondered if I was about to be wrenched back into my body. “Still no change. Load her up with epi, bicarb and amiodarone.” I considered going back, but my lifeline hadn’t changed. I was close enough to see the name plate on the nearby doors, ‘Reception’. Seemed like a sensible place to look for my sister.
I passed through the door and immediately sidestepped out of the way of a porter. It was much busier in here. I retreated to an out of the way corner and looked around for Jane. I couldn’t see her anywhere and was beginning to wonder if she had abandoned me and gone back to work when I saw a high-vis jacket come around the corner. It was her partner. Dave. I remembered. He held two coffee cups, putting them on a counter before reaching for his radio. I crossed the room, weaving around nurses and patients, cringing when a small girl ran through me.
Dave was already mid conversation. “…anks for sorting it. I’ll tell her then I‘ll run the rig back to base.”
“How’s she doing?” A voice said from the radio.
Dave blew out a breath between clenched teeth. “Honestly, not good.” He seemed to stare across at a pair of doors across the room. Toilets. “I mean, it is her sister after all, how many of us would be alright after seeing someone we love in that …” I left him behind as I crossed the room and plunged through the wall into the ladies restroom.
Jane stood there, leaning over a sink. Her high-vis jacket lay on the floor at her feet. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the edges of the sink. She was murmuring to herself, enough to earn a sideways glance from another woman who quickly scurried out.
“…stupid. Stubborn. Why couldn’t you just listen to me. I begged you. ‘Don’t go after him.’ But you didn’t listen. You never listen.” As I stepped closer, I could see her aura. There was a bubbling of red, but it was mostly that sickly green. As the door swung shut behind the fleeing woman, Jane let out a great shuddering sob, and tears began to fall from her face. I reached out, but my hand passed through her shoulder.
I could still hear the distant sounds of the attempt to resuscitate me. A third shock delivered. “Back in asystole. Ok, hang another round of blood products and chase up the surgical consult, if we don’t get anything back in two minutes we open her up down here.” That sounded just delightful. I glanced down at my lifeline, but it didn’t look like it had diminished.
That’s when I noticed the traces of red in the sink. Blood. My blood. As if to distract herself, Jane washed out the bowl of the sink, tears still dripping as she took deep steadying breaths. I’d seen her do it before. Fighting to assert an iron control over herself. It had always driven me crazy, especially after what had happened to Mum and Dad. But then, something happened that I had never seen before.
She lost.
Her whole body was wracked with sobs as she sank to the ground against the wall. Her hands covered her face and she drew her knees up tightly. I didn’t know what to do. So I sat down beside her. For just a moment I passed into the wall, but I grabbed that moment of resistance, held it my mind for a few seconds, and suddenly the wall felt solid. I leaned back against it, looking at the ceiling.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” I whispered. As expected, she didn’t respond. She continued to sob, and I could see tears leaking out. I sighed. “It was him. If you can hear me at all, hear that. It was him. Patterson. I was right. He’s a murderer, and he tried to kill me. Just like he killed them.” I could feel the anger building. I turned to look at her, as she lowered her hand, her sobs easing. “It was never your fault Jane. It was always him. He had mum and dad killed.”
