Through this patrons only essay, I think through the way surface both retains and exceeds Blackness, stretching from the epidermis to pornotropic Black geographies.
Tumblr media
Delia daughter of Renty on B.F. Taylor Plantation, Columbia South Carolina [Picture # 1]
Tumblr media
[ID] @DaRealKingCoopa tweets: "This is why Spanish women and black guys go together...Look at the production lol" There are two photographs of two light skinned little girls below the tweet. The little girl on the left is holding a crushed paper cup and looking to her right. The little girl on the left is lifting her hair. She wears a red shirt that reads "PLAYDATE MATERIAL". [end of ID]
The daguerreotype and screenshot above best visually describe the essay. Here are some excerpts:
There needs to be a Black body whose epidermis is weighed down with meanings for Blackness to register as legible. Louis Agassiz commissioned daguerreotypes of Delia and Drana amongst others to surface what he considered black inferiority; as it was, there was (and is) nothing to be said, almost nothing to be seen. There's nothing to be retrieved from the surface, for there isn't any meaning to it.
and
How does one settles through the contradiction ? How it is that the surface can hollow and index ? What about the Black epidermis means countability without recognition ? The archive begets the algorithm. The algorithm begets the archive. PredPol, a company producing predictive policing software, rests on the surface of the event. The type of crime. The time of the crime. The location of the crime.
and
@DaRealKingCoopa tweets: "This is why Spanish women and black guys go together.. Look at the production lol" . The (re)produced girl children stand silent, growing more opaque as @DaRealKingCoopa imbricates the skins of body in flux. Through the dreamed introduction and the material disappearance of his extremity, he participates in a process, that would, by proxy, identifies his body as obsolete and defaced, a debris to be rid of for the surfacing to occur in all its quaint neatness. He would no longer exist as he is; the fleshy brand of his abjection would rub up against the sandpaper of a deracialized "Spanish" woman, peeling off into unidentifiable children. Now you see me, now you don't.

WELCOME
This is a little info thing on the Smith Virus Medical Center AU. It's a massive directory with characters, backstories, etc. Maybe even some snazzy pictures one day.
BACKSTORY
Remember this commercial? In this AU, something went horribly wrong recording it, and now the Smith virus is in OUR world. A hospital in Kissimmee, FL has responded to the outbreak by converting into a research facility populated by a bunch of odd "nurses" (for now, nurse is a very wide term as they act like doctors but look like nurses) and other workers, who've signed a contract that makes it so they live at the hospital indefinitely to investigate the outbreak and risk their life for...wait, this seems like a trap...And the doctors are slowly startng to lose their sanity too
CHARACTERS
there will be more.
Sophia Amburgey
Her first gig as a nurse
A miserable Midwesterner who was "forcefully" relocated to Florida. She's lived in Ocala for nearly a year, but still hates it and wants to go home, although she knows she can never return home. She's being driven to insanity from her desires. She's rarely happy, but when she is, she's bound to show it off in the craziest ways.
Amburgey likes to study the neurological parts of the virus, and seems to show quite a bit of sympathy for the infected; after all they were once like her, and it's almost as if she can feel the pain they can not. After all, her studies point to them having some sort of trace of their humanity within them
(also she is very autistic)
Maria Koch
Westside Hospital - Plantation, FL
A witness to the Aventura Hospital incident. She's a bit of a luddite, and tries to avoid using the computer whenever possible. She also has very odd dreams, and she claims that a dream she had weeks prior to the incident where she was transformed into a familiar-looking man was a prediction of the outbreak.
More than anything, Koch wants to find a cure despite all evidence pointing that no cure will ever be good enough, and this is generating so much stress its like she's competing with Amburgey
(i accidentally gave her heterochromia :D)
Hernando Ramirez
Palms of Pasadena Hospital - South Pasadena, FL
- It may not show, but this guy's been killing it at his game for years. He even treated Dr. Amburgey for norovirus when she was little during a Florida vacation gone sour, before she became the jaded, insecure woman we know her as now.
Granted, the hospital was mainly self-serve, but he promises to "lock the fuck in" as Dr. Amburgey says. He just acts like a general nurse, checking in on the clones similarly to Dr. Amburgey and "Jennie". Sometimes this even extends to other nurses -- Koch seems to particularly concern her, as she frequently forgets to eat or sleep in the name of research
Ethan Hunter
North Florida Regional Medical Center - Gainesville, FL
Dr. Amburgey's cousin-in-law, this former paramedic is now taking care of incidents all around the hospital and metropolitan area, from St. Cloud to Orlando, (the ones at the amusement parks are the most horrific usually)
Sometimes he brings other nurses along, especially his cousin Sophia.
{REDACTED] Smith
Aventura Hospital and Medical Center - Aventura, FL
WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT HIM.
He manages the software for the project and nobody knows how the fuck he got in. We're too scared to fire him
JENNIE BARRETT
Mercy Hospital - Miami, FL
Although Jennie dons the nurse uniform, you're more likely to find her working the gift shop.
Inspired by the "deirty girls" of Hugo Weaving's fandom, Jennie is fucking insane. I mean, she sacrificed her brother just to work as a GIFT SHOP CLERK. She also seems to be be living off of pot brownies because there's no way she acts like that regularly. She also has an affinity for things like Strawberry Shortcake and Sanrio; she's a Hello Kitty girl to her very core! She also has a pretty sweet Build-A-Bear collection, and Dr. Amburgey seems to get along with her wonderfully
Jennie also seems to have something wrong with her as well, as she's getting herself into dangerous situations just to spend time with the infected.
Damian Madison
There's something suspicious about him too?
This shaggy emo-looking boy is Dr. Amburgey's best friend and partner in crime. He's stuck cleaning rooms most of the time
Sarah Edmonton
Central Florida Regional Hospital - Sanford, FL
Sarah can't catch a break, can she? A highly desirable target for the infected, she tries to work as a receptionist in the lobby, as far away from the clones as possible. They assimilated her family, and she's very likely the next up.
Ayrton Ivanov
Barista
Ayrton is a very curious young man, and the only human employee at the coffee shop. He loves to nerd out over cars, and he's got some decent art skills too, drawing mint kitties, characters to cheer you up while you cope with the fact that your Smith-infected daughter forgot who you were and lashed out. Some nurses have very ermmm...impressive collections.

Honestly, I think the TV/computer restrictions we had in my house were good for kids our age. The computers were desktops so you couldn’t really hide what you were doing on there, but the only bad part was that my dad would like comment on my writing when I was very obviously simply writing bad fantasy fiction. They didn’t care if I was on Neopets or playing Cake Mania or whatever. I also remember watching Glee in the middle of the computer room, where my parents could see the screen but not hear what was happening. They didn’t have to closely monitor what I was doing (like having tracking software) because they knew they could always just see it. I started having access to a more private computer around 12 or 13 ish.
What they almost never tracked was what we were reading from the library, so we would read stuff way too old for us (I remember reading Memoirs of a Geisha pretty young) but the harm that can do is in part limited on account of being vetted by a public librarian for inclusion in the library. My sister and I also both read the Elsie Dinsmore series, which is this horrible very Christian series about an antebellum plantation. Elsie is a poor little rich girl who lives on the plantation; her family owns slaves and the slaves all love Elsie because she is so virtuous and upholds Christian values. Elsie’s father is abusive and mean because he is not Christian, but she does what she’s told to anyway because she knows to honor her father. Eventually he reforms and accepts Jesus into his heart and becomes a better father. And again, my parents could see what we were reading (except Memoirs of a Geisha, I was so sneaky about that one because I knew it was about sex) but they mostly didn’t care. Parental panopticon? Maybe! But it worked pretty well.

the desert afforestation software engineer guy apparently went on a trip to mexico at some point to visit an agave plantation and the workers there talked about (among other things) how the best way to get more agave is to let one pup and then split off the new rhizome
and meanwhile the guy there is like, ahh, rhizoma, like they've just explained some highly technical agricultural technique.
(anyway then he planted hundreds of agave seeds and all but one of them failed to germinate and the one that did germinate died)
i mean i guess i admire his tenacity to some degree but like. dude start with a backyard garden. do some xeriscaping somewhere that's not a four hour drive away from anything

After visiting the Varner-Hogg plantation an hour south of Houston, amateur historian Michelle Haas was incensed by what she had seen. At an exhibit that details the farm’s use as a sugar plantation worked by at least 66 slaves in the early nineteenth century, she’d watched an informational video. To her mind, it focused too much on slavery at the site and not enough on the Hogg family, which had turned its former home into a museum celebrating Texas history. She’d also seen books in the visitor center gift shop written by Carol Anderson and Ibram X. Kendi, two Black academic historians who have been outspoken on the issue of systemic racism. Outraged, she emailed David Gravelle, a board member of the Texas Historical Commission, the agency that oversees historical sites at the direction of leaders appointed by Governor Greg Abbott. “What a s—show is this video,” Haas wrote on September 2, 2022. “Add to that the fact that the activist staff member doing the buying for the gift shop thinks Ibram X. Kendi and White Rage have a place at a historic site.”
Over the next eight months, Haas continued to email Gravelle, advocating for such books to be removed. In turn, Gravelle, a marketing executive based in Dallas, took up the cause internally at the Historical Commission, calling on agency staff to do away with the titles Haas didn’t think belonged at the gift shops. By November of this year, it appeared Haas’s demands were met. The Texas Historical Commission no longer sells White Rage by Anderson or Stamped From the Beginning by Kendi, or 23 other works to which Haas later objected, at two former slave plantations in Brazoria County, including Varner-Hogg. Among the literature no longer available for purchase is an autobiography of a slave girl, a book of Texas slave narratives, the celebrated novel Roots by Alex Haley, and the National Book Award–winning Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.
The Texas Historical Commission did not provide Texas Monthly with a list of titles no longer for sale. Chris Florance, a spokesperson for the agency, said many books were removed from the historical sites as part of an effort that he said was launched in March to reduce inventory as the agency transitions to a new point-of-sale software system. Emails acquired by Texas Monthly through an open-records request reveal, however, that Gravelle was concerned about the way those books presented Texas history and about potential attention from state lawmakers over what books were available for purchase. The emails also show that he had raised those concerns in February, before the agency decided to change its software system.
Haas, a graphic designer from Corpus Christi who sells Texas-themed merchandise, has spent years critiquing historical narratives about slavery. In 2006, she cofounded Copano Bay Press, an independent publishing house specializing in firsthand accounts of Texas history. She wrote and published 200 Years a Fraud, a full annotation of Solomon Northup’s 1853 memoir Twelve Years a Slave, which was made into an Oscar-winning film in 2013. In her book, Haas disputes Northup’s account of his life and argues that many U.S. histories are overly harsh to the South and do not acknowledge that slavery was “a socially acceptable and economically worthwhile practice worldwide at the time our thirteen colonies arose.”
In 2022, Haas launched the Texas History Trust, a nonprofit advocacy organization that aims to fight back against what it describes as “historical societies, university history departments and authors who warp Texas history based on feelings, not the historical record.” She has protested the inclusion of so-called “woke ideology,” “neo-Marxist” influence, and critical race theory in Texas schools, even though CRT—a framework for examining systemic racism, for example in lending patterns—is not taught below the college level in the Lone Star State.
[...]
That culturally significant books about slavery were apparently made casualties of the culture war deeply concerns historians such as Michael Phillips, who is writing a book on eugenics in Texas, was recently a senior fellow at Southern Methodist University, and who filed an initial records request regarding the commission’s efforts to remove the works from gift shops. “We have an appalling situation,” Phillips said. “The idea that these books are irrelevant somehow is really striking.” He added, “to eliminate books about racism at slave plantation sites is like doing an Auschwitz tour and never mentioning antisemitism.”
Out of the 39 books currently available across the two Brazoria County plantation sites, only a handful focus on issues of racism and white supremacy. Visitors won’t find Roots, but they can buy several books that one would not expect to see, following Gravelle’s policy of excluding “non-Texas-history books.” They include a guide to birds in the state, a book of wildlife photo portraits, and a southern cookbook.

Building a strong resume is one of the most important things for students who dream of getting a good job or going for higher studies. A resume is like a mirror that shows who you are – your skills, qualifications, and achievements. In today’s competitive world, just having a degree is not enough. Students must focus on improving their personality, gaining skills, and getting experiences that make their resume strong and attractive.
Tumblr media

You can join English speaking classes, take part in debates or write for your school or college magazine. Strong communication skills not only help in interviews but also improve your confidence.
3. Do Internships and Training Programs
Doing internships while studying is very helpful. Internships give you real-life experience in working with professionals. They also show that you are serious about your career. Taking part in such activities helps you develop leadership, teamwork, and time management skills. Students from the Top University in Jaipur often have a good balance between studies and extracurriculars, which gives their resumes a positive touch.
5. Develop Technical and Soft Skills
Today’s job market needs people who have both technical and soft skills. Technical skills depend on your subject. For example, if you are from a computer background, learn programming languages like Python or Java. If you are from commerce, learn Excel, Tally, or accounting software. Along with this, soft skills like teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and emotional intelligence are equally important.
You can learn these skills through online courses, workshops, or by attending special training programs. Many top colleges including the Best Girls University in India offer such training to their students so that they are job-ready.
6. Volunteer or Do Social Work
Social work adds great value to your resume. It shows that you care about society and have a responsible nature. You can work with NGOs, take part in cleanliness drives, teach poor children, or help in tree plantation. These small steps show that you are active in community work and have a kind heart. Many employers and universities respect students who do social work.
7. Write Your Achievements and Projects Clearly
When you make your resume, don’t forget to include your school and college achievements. This can be awards, certificates, or recognitions you received. Also mention any group or individual projects you have completed. For example, a science exhibition project, research work, or presentations.
Make sure you write your projects and achievements in simple words and highlight the result. For example, if your team won first prize in a business model competition, write it proudly.
8. Create a Professional Resume Format
Presentation matters. A clean and simple format always looks better. Use bullet points, clear headings, and easy-to-read fonts. Don’t use too many colours or designs. Keep the resume short – one or two pages. Also, always keep your contact details like phone number and email updated.
Many students take help from college workshops or career counsellors to learn how to make resumes. Colleges like the Top Girls University in India often hold resume-building sessions to help students prepare better.
9. Take Certifications and Online Courses
Today, there are many free and paid online courses available on websites like Coursera, Udemy, and Skillshare. You can take short courses in digital marketing, data science, AI, graphic design, and many more subjects.
These certificates improve your knowledge and also look impressive on your resume. It shows that you are curious to learn more and use your time productively. Students from the Best Girls University in India regularly take such courses to gain extra knowledge and get an edge over others.
10. Get Guidance from Mentors or Seniors
Lastly, talk to your teachers, seniors, or professionals in your field to get guidance. They can help you understand what to include in your resume and how to present yourself better. A mentor can also help you choose the right career path and prepare you for interviews.
Learning from someone who has experience always gives you better clarity. Don’t hesitate to ask for help – it's a smart move, not a weak one.
Conclusion
Building a resume is not something you do at the last moment. It starts from your very first year in college. Everything you do – from learning, exploring, participating, to volunteering – becomes a part of your resume. So, make every moment count.
