Daniel longed to touch the moon; with Sandy’s help, he’d reach the stars. It was 1969 and America was embarking on the biggest adventure known to humankind with its voyage to the moon. Daniel too was pursuing the unknown; leaving the path of isolation he had known for so long to embrace the love of another. The only question was would he be able maintain that trajectory or would he veer off course never to be seen again. That was the challenge for ‘The Astronot’.

ALBUM REVIEW: Dropkick Murphys - 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory
The Celtic punk rock band Dropkick Murphy’s ring in the new year with album number 9 - 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory. If you’ve heard anything from Dropkick Murphys before, then you’ll know what to expect on this record. Their formula of bagpipe filled punk & roll songs is still there, but, as reported by Planetmosh.com, was “influenced by the band’s work with The Claddagh Fund,” a charity organization formed by the band to aid “addiction recovery as well as children’s and veterans’ organizations.” With focus on social issues this time around, the lyrics help support some otherwise so-so songs.
When I say “so-so songs,” I mean to say that in the hands of any other band, it wouldn’t have been so meaningful. In a very positive way the lyrics enhanced the music.
But when the music and lyrics are both strong, that’s when the magic happens, folks. One of the prime examples is “4-15-13,” a song that pays respect to those lost and injured by the Boston Marathon Bombing. The instrumentation is great and really helps to convey a sense of remembrance and light-hearted camaraderie with that chorus: “We’re all just people trying to get along.” It’s one of the best songs on the album and represents the best of the albums efforts in lyricism, instrumentation, and production.
Speaking of production, I want to mention that the production is well done. In fact, though I don’t know much about production techniques and whatnot, it sounds like it was recorded live in studio, which is really cool. Now, whether or not it was, it’s a good sound that, though has a lot of the sounds competing between one another, is a good sound. A good aesthetic, if you will.
To go back to lyrics real quick, it was “Blood” that made me smile.
"It's time to go, goodbye good luck They said people like you screw everything up ... But we don't listen, we do what we do We don't care about them, we care about you"
It’s another song where the music and lyrics sync up in simple harmony. They complement each other despite being some relatively simple words. It’s a power that’s underscored. Plus it ties right back into the album’s title: Stories and songs about pain & glory.
It does get tiresome at times, though. To the album’s credit, there are a lot of good, inspired songs, but songs like “First Class Loser” and “Kicked to the Curb” weigh it down a bit. Why? It just falls back into old grooves and rhythms that’ve been heard before. It can work, like on “I Had a Hat,” which is a good example of strong and clever lyrics supporting the song. It ends with “Until the Next Time” which is pretty cheesy and not-as-good as well, but it doesn’t hurt the album’s prospects.
It’s a good album that’s got some great moments and good songs... featuring more of the latter than the former, but that’s okay. It’s definitely an inspired record, one that will please most everyone who decides to pick up this record as an old or new fan.
BEST SONGS: “Rebels with a Cause,” “Blood,” “I Had a Hit,” “4-15-13″
