On The Location of Manipura

This is the result of a discussion on Babhruvahana I'd had a couple weeks ago. Also, this is a lesser known fact, and I sure do enjoy spreading knowledge :P

The Manipur we know today is the state bordering Myanmar, in Northeastern India. But the Manipura (or Manalura as it is also called) in the Mahabharata is located on the east coast, in the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh region.

We're not given the exact location.

But it is implied in the text, when they describe Arjuna's journey.

I'm not going to cite all of Arjuna's travels, I'm saving that for another post (going to make a map of his journey). But here's the relevant text:

When he approached the gates of the kingdom of Kalinga, the brahmanas who had followed the Pandava took their leave and departed. But with their permission, Kunti’s son, the valorous Dhananjaya, went on as far as the ocean, with only a few companions with him. Passing beyond Kalinga, the lord saw many beautiful countries, and followers of dharma. He went and saw Mahendra Mountain, adorned with ascetics. Travelling slowly along the shores of the ocean, he arrived in Manalura. Having seen all the sacred places of pilgrimage there, the mighty-armed one went to visit the king who was the lord of Manalura—King Chitravahana, who was devoted to dharma.

So he reaches Kalinga. From Wikipedia, here's the rough region of the Kalinga kingdom:

So Arjuna passes through Kalinga, and travels along the shore.

He then sees the Mahendragiri, which is presumably within the borders of the Kalinga kingdom.

And then he continues along the shores ("Travelling slowly along the shores of the ocean, he arrived in Manalura.") to reach Manipura.

I'm not sure whether he ever goes to the Northeastern part of India, but this is more than enough proof to indicate that Manalura is in the southern part of India.

I'd place it within the borders of Andhra Pradesh, frankly, but quite close to Kalinga.

So there you go: Manalura/Manipura of the Mahabharata is not the state in the Northeast, but a kingdom in in the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh region.

The feeling of attending the Jagrata for the first time!

They say, 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do'. This Maha Shivaratri was another instance when I needed to adapt to this new place.

In Odisha, we visit Lord Shiva temple both during the day and at night on Maha Shivaratri and worship the Lord. We keep fast the whole day and break it only after the Mahadeepa is raised atop the temple, which normally occurs between 9 pm to midnight, varying from temple to temple. Some people also light earthen lamps and sit vigil in the Shiva temples till the rise of Mahadeepa.

But this year, I visited the temple during the day and also at night. I poured the milk on the Shiva Linga myself and also offered Bel leaves, flowers and fruits, which was a very novel experience. Back home, this is usually done by priests and we just hand our offerings to them. Unless, you are performing a special ritual like Rudrabhishek, you don't get to pour the milk or water yourself.

After returning home, I saw the neighbours organising a Jagrata. I broke my fast and went to see the ritual. I sat there for some time, listened to the devotional songs and returned home. Previously, I had only seen Jagrata in serials. It was quite a feeling to experience it in person. The idols were beautiful and the enthusiasm in the atmosphere was contagious. I would definitely remember this for the rest of my life.

Today I will give you some information about the tourist places in Bhubaneswar.

Dhauli Shanti Stupa :

This is the place where historical Kalinga war was fought on the bank of Daya river. After the was king Ashoka realised the consiquence of a war and he adopted the baudha dharma.

Today in the same place, a boudha stupa has been made. You have to drive through the hill to reach there. This place has attarcted many tourists. From the hilltop stupa, you can see most of the places of Bhubanswar.

There is a temple behind this stupa. Lord Shiva is being worshipped in the temple.

2. Lingaraj temple

The Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar is dedicated to Lord Shiva and this ancient Temple has 4 Towers. In the first tower the Shiva Linga is situated.

During Shivaratri a lot of devotees gathered gathers here. In front of the Lingaraj temple there is a lake situated called as Bindu Sagar.

3. Nandan kanan zoo

Nandankanan zoo is a very good place to do adventurous activity as well as to explore the wildlife. this zoo hot a lot of variety of animals including tigers lions elephants giraffe etc.

In the premises of Nandankanan zoo there is a lake where you can do boting. Also there is a children park inside the zoo.

Tourist places in Bhubaneswar

I am moving out from here on 14th April. My brother has his jee on 13th after which we will head back home to Durgapur. I have lived here in odisha, my native state for three years now. As a child, we never visited other tourist places much. We only got time to visit our grandparents and cousins. My cousins lived where I live now: Nalco, Angul. I wanted to live here when I was a kid just to stay with my cousins and play with them until I was forced to stay in odisha instead of completely my high school in kolkata like we were supposed too and then living here in Angul was suggested by chacha chachi, so we did, with hopes of getting something good out of it.

I am here only for nine more days. I had arrived here on 15th August where the physics sir had told us to quickly study S block and give a test in two hours. I remember how I felt like crying. We had just reached this place, barely opened our luggage, and I was hearing this neet jee for an hour and then a test. I wanted to sleep, but somehow I studied and I had scored really bad. Like I do often, I ended up crying in the car. I was like mummy dance class band kar dete hai abhi padhai pe hi dhyan dungi. For someone who loves dance a lot, I have told my mother to cancel dance classes because I thought that I wasn't good enough to do both because I was lacking in my studies, and as for every middle class person, job and money comes first and then your dreams until your job money dream everything lies in one single thing.

Well, my dance class continued, I gave my dance exam online, completed learning a few items too, wrote stories and studied hard. I have wasted time too by crying or by simply procrastinating or sometimes I would engage myself in dance or writing for a much longer time than scheduled. And now all of this will end. I will wrap my things again and go home. Now I have lived in durgapur for only a month. I loved it so I am looking forward to it now.

It feels surreal. I wanted to move out of this place so badly in the initial months. I still want too. But now looking back, this experience has made me feel grateful and wiser about so many things. My school friends from kolkata still complain that why I had to go to odisha and stay there, but I am happy I did. As a tenth grader, I lived in my own world and had a pink dream idea of being with my friends, wearing fashionable clothes, attending parties and fests and studying ofc, nothing much.

Over here each and every expectation, every dream was broken. Like they say, to find yourself one needs to lose themselves too, which I did. That was a really dark phase. Alone, with no one and no idea how and why is this happening to you. But some time later I rediscovered myself again. It was art, poetry, stories and dance. It was me connecting back to God, whom I had forgotten in the glitz and glamour of big cities. I read the same ramayana mahabharata and folk tales, but I had begun finding learning lessons from them which as a child I was only enamoured by the story, the drama and visuals.

The things 13year old samridhi enjoyed, I no longer enjoy them anymore. The clothing, the music, the lifestyle everything has taken a 360 degree turn. Once I enjoyed parties and loud music, we used to have some in kolkata sometimes and I loved it. Now, I don't think I can. I want to have friends and make memories and enjoy, but no longer with music drinks and stuff. Somewhere simple and meaningful.

I know that in the upcoming months there are going to be many changes, but these experiences shall stay with me and remind me to be humble and rooted to the ground. I have seen the rich, sparkles and exciting rush and also the slow life, muddy roads, farms and simple people simple towns. There is still more to see in the near future, but to live through all this is a big thing for an 18 year old.

And if it were not sambalpur and angul, I wouldn't have known how strangers can be loving, how certain people hold such a great mark over you and your story, and how colourful life can be.

We arrived in the city of Balasore, and now we are on the way to the famous Khirichora Gopinath temple.

This mesmerizing temple is situated in the place known as Remuna. Remuna is derived from the word “Ramaniya,” which means good-looking. This good-looking town is situated 9 km east of Balasore. In this town, the temple of “Khirachora Gopinath” is situated. Khirichora Gopinath in Odia means Stealer of Kheer/ Rice and milk pudding, and Gopinatha literally means the Consort of Gopis.

The Main Idols/ Vigrah are situated in the inner sanctum of the temple. Here Lord Krishna is worshipped in three forms. These three forms do mention various attributes of Lord Krishna.

3. Madana Mohana

The Gopinath statue is believed by the locals is very old. Folklore is popular among the locals in that Lord Rama carved out this idol of Gopinath with His arrow, and then Sita worshiped this Deity in Chitrakuta, and later this Idol was bought here .

But in regard to other two dieties, which are black in color, were brought from Vrindavana in about 1938 “Chaitanya Dasa Babaji,” who is the devotee of this temple. After these Vigrah arrived, the worship of all of the three Vigrah happens to be in the same “Garbh gruha” or Inner sanctum of the temple.

Sri Gopinatha stands in a bas-relief form of art, while the other two deities are in a regular form of idols.

An interesting story behind the Deity’s name is as “Khirichora” is very popular among devotees. Khirichora means the thief of Kheera, or in this case, the special offering made to the Deity as “Amrita keli.”

Devotees believe that nearly 500 years ago, an adherent devotee of Lord Krishna, whose name was “Madhavendra,” was going to Puri to get some sandalwood and other worship items for his Sri Gopal deity waiting for him in Vrindavana.

He was making this journey on foot and, after reaching the state of Odisha, arrived at Remuna. Remuna is the place where the ancient Gopinatha temple is situated.

Madhavendra was enchanted by the beauty of the Vigrah situated in the temple and started chanting the name and dancing.

Finally, out of love and devotion, He asked the Pandit who took care of the temple what kinds of food they offered to the Diety.

The priest of the temple replied that “although a wide variety of food items are offered to deities in the evening, The Lord is offered sweet rice in twelve earthen pots. This prasad is so tasty as it resembles Nectar, and hence it is known as “Amrit keli.”

This prasad is so unique that it is not prepared anywhere else in the world, and Gopinatha loves it; hence it is known as “Gopinatha Kheer.”

During this conversation with Priest and Madhvendar, the sweet “Amrita keli” was placed before the Lord as an offering. Madhavendra Puri thought, “If I can get this food before god tests it, I could then taste it and will prepare a similar preparation to offer to my Lord Gopala at Vrindavana.”

But Madhvendara immediately realized his ill thoughts of stealing and repented. that “I am such a bad person who has committed an offense. I am so bad that I desired to taste the preparation which is made for Lord before it was offered to the Lord.” He left the temple and sat beneath a tree

After worshipping the Lord, the priest went to rest in his hut. In the priest’s dream, Lord came and told him to wake up fast and take the Matka”Pot” of khira that he had hidden under his garments and hand over it to Madhavendra Puri. The Pujari went to the temple where a pot of Prasad is near the idol of Deity, and he immediately found the sweet and brought that pot to Madhavendra Puri.

Till today the same Prasad “Amrita keli” is prepared in the temple complex and distributed to devotees.

The temple complex is very colorful and has a big courtyard where people gather and sing melodious Bhajans of Krishna. Major events associated with Lord Krishna are celebrated here with great zeal.

From this Beautiful temple, we are going to a temple which is built recently, but people visit this and enjoy the marvelous structure in Panchalingeswar and Chandipur.

Emami Jagannath Temple– A beautiful best place to visit in baleswar odisha

The tall and beautiful Emami Jagannath Temple is situated at a distance of 4 km from Khirichora Gopinath temple. This temple is a mesmerizing architecture constructed with red stones by the Emami group in the year 2015. This temple attracts a good number of visitors every day. This temple has all the specifications of The Puri Jagannath temple.

The temple is the replica of the world-famous Jagannath temple but with a twist as it appears that it is situated on a chariot. Dring night with the lighting, this temple looks heavenly with beautifully carved statues and designs over it.

After this amazing temple, we are on our way to a temple where you will be amazed by the ancient Shiva Lingas enshrined.

Panchalingeshwar Temple

Situated on a hillock in the Nilagari Hill in the Balasore district, Odisha, Panchalingeswar Temple is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

We have to climb 260 steps to reach the top of this hill to arrive at the main temple. It makes a surreal surrounding for the visitors to relish. As we are climbing, we witness small water streams and stunning sites of the small villages in Panchalingeswar and Chandipur.

After reaching the temple, We have to bend down in front of a perennial stream of water, which continuously flows. After bending down, we have to look for the Shivlingas inside a pool created by the waterfall.

Devotee notices that there are five Shivlings; hence the place is known as Panchalingeswar and Chandipur. To touch all five Shivlings, one has to lie on his chest over the rock which is near the stream of flowing water.

In this part of Odisha, locals, as well as devotees, have great significance for this temple. Devotee believes that if one touches all the five Shivlings, his wish will get fulfilled. Hence the belief of people makes it one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in the district.

The place is a great sightseeing choice for nature lovers, not just for devotees.
