Me and @alaskaartz have made a silly little HK AU called: PK Charm.
The premise is essentially that PK becomes an equipable charm.
His skills include:
- randomly gives Ghost soul
- lore dumps and makes comments about everything
- being an overly worried dad but can't do anything because he is just an apparition

@alaskaartz and @brennustheskeleton came up with the Pale King Charm AU, and I'm now suffering from what I will affectionately call plotbunnies but in reality is acting more like brainrot.
Anyway, chapter 1 of the fic is here:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/58949923/chapters/150271021
Your AU has consumed my soul, I hope you're happy with yourselves (affectionate). So now there will be Fix-It Fic, I Need To Write My Feelings, and Concerned Dad PK: the fic.

in your fpk au, what happened to all of ghost’s charms? i think someone had asked this before but i can’t find the post
Yeah I might have answered this before. Unfortunately Tumblr's search is completely useless and back then I didn't use specific character tags, so sadly not surprising that you can't find it.
But to answer your question, the charms were destroyed when Ghost united the void and turned into the Shade Lord. This included the Void Heart, any charm they bought or found, and the charm given to them by Grimm that contained his Grimmchild form. The latter meant that the ritual had to be started over, and because by the time the Grimmchild was destroyed, it already absorbed all the nightmare essence that Grimm could use to form his new body, so he had to finish it elsewhere.
And even if they were all still intact, they're no longer accessible - only someone in possession of a dream nail can enter Godhome, and the only two remaining dream nails are outside of anyone's reach; Ghost's dream nail stayed behind in Godhome as they returned to the Abyss, and the one in FPK's possession that allowed him to create his dream realm (though subconsciously) is stuck there, since he never took it with him as he left the palace.
So in short, they're gone. Of course, something like the Wayward Compass that can be bought in a shop can likely be replaced (and because it's one of the charms that adds game mechanics which aren't magical in nature, in-universe it's probably just for decoration*) but the ones they found while exploring were unfortunately one of a kind.
* Though assuming your average bug can't use magic of any sort, this would mean that charms are generally just used as decoration, even if some of them can be very powerful in the right hands. Summon charms are different, I think those work regardless of the magical capabilities of the one wearing them.

Quick Slash is even cooler from a narrative perspective, and why I think the Nailsmith's story parallels the Pale King's
Cold take: Quick Slash is the best charm in Hollow Knight.
Slightly Warmer take: Quick Slash is the only S-tier charm that is great from both gameplay and lore perspective (aside from maybe Spell Twister).
The reason for this is that its existence is actually a
metaphor
Here, look at this.
So, Quick Slash is something that was created from a relatively big number of objects that were discarded and deemed imperfect, and that possess a collective will of wanting to fulfill their purpose.
You know what that reminds me of?
A large amount of creations: check.
Discarded as imperfect: check.
Still possessing a will to find closure: check.
Being a part of a larger, more powerful thing: check.
Having a common creator who is responsible for their creation and rejection: check.
So yeah, I think that Quick Slash's lore (or at least its description) is meant to parallel that of the Vessels'.
But I wanna talk about that last point: the creator.
It is heavily implied that the person who created and then later discarded those nails was the Ancient Nailsmith we see in the room where we get Quick Slash.
(Oh by the way I just realized that this stone ring thing on the right of that room is actually the furnace, neat.)
Judging from their Dreamnail dialogue, this Ancient Nailsmith was trying to achieve the same goal as the other, more famous Nailsmith we all know and love: creating a Pure Nail.
And you know who else was trying to create a perfect, Pure thing while discarding many other similar things that later gained a collective will?
That's right - it's the guy who is also responsible for creating those other discarded things we discussed earlier!
Ok, but what I really wanted to talk about here is how all of what I just said ties back to that other, more famous guy - The Nailsmith.
We don't know for sure how the story of the Ancient Nailsmith ended, but it feels like it exists there mainly to put an emphasis on the City's Nailsmith's story; to convey that his struggle is an important theme in this narrative (because ancient means important, ok?) And, I mean, the City's Nailsmith's story also parallels that of the Pale King's in the same manner, right?
The thing is, we already know how PK's story ended.
In trying to achieve perfection, to create an eternal Kingdom by making a Pure Vessel devoid of mind, voice and will, the Pale King doomed himself to be taken over by his regrets, by the vast emptiness of the futility of his struggles. But was it because he failed, or because that was where his story was headed all along?
What if PK succeeded? What if the Radiance was sealed forever? What if his Kingdom actually stood eternal, never to change, never to end? What if he realized he achieved his only goal in life?
And that's the part where we get to a story the ending of which is up to the player's choice.
To quote White Lady, only two obvious outcomes there are from such a thing.
The first is an honorable death by the fruits of his labor.
If we choose to kill the Nailsmith with the Pure Nail, he dies happy, knowing that his life's goal is accomplished and having gained all the satisfaction he could from it.
The second I find preferable, a new passion.
If the Nailsmith doesn't feel the finishing blow of the Pure Nail, he is left unsatisfied. But, while trying to resolve that unsatisfaction, he eventually finds something (and someone) that gives him a new calling, a new thing to create, a new reason to live.
And, while those are both equally valuable, equally canonic outcomes, don't you think the second one is just... better? I mean, not only does it include the achievement of the Nailsmith's goal, but it lets him live AND gives two lonely souls a partner in life! I feel like that's the thing this narrative is trying to convey. What it's trying to say about the meaning of life, about our dreams.
Maybe that was the ultimate folly of the Pale King - the inability to change. His story would've ended in the same way, regardless of whether Hallownest lasted eternally or not. He would be dead, if not by the hands of the Void, but by his own - but ultimately, by the hands of that vast emptiness of realizing that you achieved your only goal and that now all there is for you is this eternal satisfaction that slowly fades away, leaving you with nothing.
TL;DR: Quick Slash is the best because it's a metaphor for discarded vessels; perfection is overrated, try to get laid instead.

Our job is overthinking game mechanics, basically. Medal Points are how much magic your body can take before things start acting up as you reach a sort of "saturation" - can be on your end, the medal's end, or both, and you generally don't want to find out what specific flavor you have when you start getting heart murmurs mid-battle.
While charmcraft is one of, if not the most powerful thing you can have on hand for things like healing, without removable pieces, it's regarded as all too dangerous, especially with the host of side effects it brings around. A problematic medal can be removed, but a grafted limb cannot - and the way that charmcraft allows one to play with flesh, there tend to be a few aspects in there related both to protecting those who might be altered in such a way and preventing those who might seek out suck alterations from doing so.
With the way the current regulations are set up, it is fully illegal to practice charmcraft on living flesh, or to purposefully have charmcraft practiced on your living flesh - however, past procedures are protected to an extent. The laws are nebulous, but the rule of thumb is generally "if they can't pin down where you got it done they can't arrest you for having charmcraft practiced on you". This exception is in place primarily for the sake of those who had work done before the law was put into place, especially as charmcraft is the single most effective (and, debatably, safest) method to replace missing limbs or organs. Marigold simply circumvents the whole issue by instead making things meant to act on living flesh.
...and yes, being transmuted permanently takes up medal points. Sucks for you, we guess.
Since Marigold's won Round Two, we might as well make a lore post for her! Some fun trivia about her and her particular method of transmutation before we move on to the next round of the @bug-oc tournament. Below a cut because it got a bit long - hopefully, it's still readable!
Her specific species is the Acherontia styx - the lesser death's head hawk moth.
She was hatched and raised in the Bee Kingdom, though she's travelled just about everywhere in Bugaria at one point or another.
Her current abode is where it is both because of convenience and because of close proximity to the Explorer's Association - a safety net against tougher customers is deeply appreciated, and technically, she's not doing anything illegal.
She has no magic of her own. Rather, her concoctions are charmcraft - the same thing that makes medals possible! Her transmutations are purely from external magic, drawing specific effects from certain combinations of materials to make a cocktail of magical effects to do whatever she wants.
Charmcraft will work with just about anything, requiring only good knowledge of what you're doing and a particular selection of tools to infuse magic directly into an object. Optionally, it may also include a specially prepared charmcraft workstation, made to isolate your reagents for environmental effects and potential decay.
Though traditional medals are generally in a very small range of shapes, being limited to small accessories that are easy to put on or remove, Marigold's charms can come in just about any shape or size - from more traditional metal pins to potions to full-on armor. This is due to a particular quirk of her charms that most medals don't have.
With a regular medal, the magic is self-contained in the medal, merely transferring to the user when equipped. The medal activates when equipped, latching onto a bug and running off of their body, and deactivates when removed. A bug may have more or less tolerance for charm usage depending on the individual, and tolerance can increase with experience.
With Marigold's charms, it's just about the same, with a single major difference - upon use, and the original item is either destroyed or absorbed, transferring the full effect to the user and making it impossible to unequip.
It may be fully absorbed, becoming indistinguishable from the rest of a bug's body, fused, becoming a noticeable part of them, or simply shatter. Regardless, the original charm is useless after transfer, the effect now fully localized and sustained in the user's body. Unable to be removed, it sinks into the body and lingers, asserting its effect on the user passively much like a more structured version of a Heart Berry or similar item.
Though it's technically illegal to use charmcraft directly on living flesh, Marigold's effects remain legal through the same way that normal medals remain legal: the effect is still self-contained to the object, merely acting on a bug's body when activated. The only real difference is the break - and if a normal charm breaking could produce a similar effect, if a bug was unlucky enough.
As Marigold's items are one-use, rather than permanant objects like normal charms, testing becomes both more dangerous and more person-heavy. Can't just yank it off if something goes wrong, after all! Once the charm is in effect, it's in effect, no matter how gristly the results.
Not to say that accidents are common, of course. Marigold is very experienced in charmcraft by now, and defects are few and far between! She knows what she's doing, and she wouldn't make a rookie mistake, especially when she knows precisely who her target is. Though there are plenty of horror stories from amateur body modders trying similar methods for more frivolous reasons, you're in good hands, picking her as your contact.
That said…
Accidents can happen.
Especially while working with exotic biology.
Especially while working with poorly-understood species.
Especially when working with materials that are hazardous even outside of a charm.
There's always a risk, with these things. Good thing that you're with someone experienced.
(from round 2 onwards, there will be a small chance of something going… wrong, with a transmutation.)
#bug fables#we speak#writing#halownests charms work on the same general principle but you hammer notches right into your shell#this way you dont have to bother with finding out if that next medal is too much#and you dont have to deal with the hassle of finding unique ways to fasten particularly fancy charms#its standardized! has been since pk's reign

realistically how do you think coryo is in bed? Like is he giving dominant or is he giving awkward but still hot vibes?
it’s so difficult but it just really depends on what stage he’s at and what the situation is with you.
like academy coryo to me is such a virgin, maybe he’s done hand stuff at the most but his priority is not sex. Like it’s almost one of the furthest things from his mind but he would indulge in pleasuring himself if it was bothering him that much. So with that, I think actually in bed with him, he’d put on a front of cockiness and like he knows what he’s doing and while he knows the mechanics and all of that, he’s still a little awkward with it at the end of the day. But even through his awkwardness, Coryo still has a charm to him that sort of overrides it? I feel like he’s just too good at keeping up appearances. But no doubt he’s overthinking every aspect of it.
When he becomes a peacekeeper is where he’d be a little more comfortable and indulgent sexually. To talk out of canon like he wasn’t with Lucy Gray, (because I think in that circumstance he’s like all for her really, maybe still more sexually mature but not with others), I think he just gains more experience then because he’s got a little bit of power now, and he’s got some more muscle to him, so his confidence is more real. I think he still has a mindset of it not being a priority but he’s just more open, I’d say. Like im already stuck here, might as well.
and the post pk/young politician Coryo, yes he has that natural dominance and self assured ness now about him but again, feel like sex is just not a priority to him. He’s too smart, he knows it’s a vulnerability regardless if he cares about who he’s having sex with. So he’s just careful.

Messing with concepts for PK during his final all-out battle against the Radiance in the Hallownest Reborn AU. He’s got not one, but TWO pairs of mandibles, as well as a secondary pair of eyes when he’s using high amounts of his power. All his royal etiquette and regal charm is pretty much thrown to the side at this point. Reject civility, embrace wyrm

what i think on the whole making vessels thing the pale king did
first of all this is not about excusing pk, however the 'me exploding people who say pk is an asshole and throws kids in a pit with my mind' is very true, aside from the fact that it's literally not what happened, pk's character is all about a guy who was in a desperate situation without a good solution and saying that he's bad for what he did is missing the point. just like the colour scheme of his palace bro is morally grey. there are things that i believe made his plan sound not as bad as it is before it's implementation, and some of my interpretation seems to differ to how it is more commonly seen (that i know of at least).
so what was the plan? place eggs in he abyss and let the void animate their shells and voilà got some vessels.
why have the void? well one reason is obvious - it's a natural enemy to the radiance of sorts, an opposite of light. another one is the supposed belief that a creature of void does not feel or think. also yes the idea is that 100% of them are empty, that's the foundation it is on. i believe that he has done some experimentation before making this plan(and possibly before the infection): he's the type to build and reasonably coming up with that shit requires familiarity with the void. so assuming that they would not feel pain or think could come from that, also not that insane for a god who gave bugs minds of their own to think that with walking examples of void constructs. so godly resilience and empty head, can't feel the pain he has to put it through and strong enough to contain another god.
why so many of them? the reasoning for that is the same as why any creature has many kids: most of them not surviving for long. not just the climb, but just not even being born (which i think most of them just didn't) or dying right after (instability such as turning to liquid or crumbling shell).
the climb so here's a thing i thought since playing the game years ago. the abyss memory is a dream and not quite literal. you hit an egg with a dream nail, every time you've done that you go to a dream, i don't see why this is different besides it looking differently. the real part being pk getting pv and fucking off. and climbing up in general i guess but you know that. i don't think the ghost was literally hanging on that ledge and literally falling off after some screenshake. it's a representation of ghost and/or every other vessel getting left behind and pv leaving. and getting charm about uniting the void right after plays more into it.
the climb in itself could be a way to see which ones are stable enough, could also be a culture thing as rotten eggs all around hallownest may suggest that they are a bit more like actual animals in regard to offspring. (don't forget that this is not human society we are talking about.)
the main fucked-up-and-feeling-guilty-about thing in this whole ordeal is letting the void consume thousands of your yet unborn children inside out and subsequently animating them with it or let radiance kill everyone and picking the first one. which is you know, sucks and is pretty fucked up and he did indeed feel guilty about it. well that and then the whole hollow knight ordeal later but that's pretty straightforward. does he realise that they are not empty? like yeah probably suspected it at the very least, but that's when you can't just drop everything you've done up to this point to save everyone. only thing that does is add more guilt and drama.
the things done and decisions made were not to be cruel or evil or whatever, we don't see what this place was like before the infection and for all we know he saw the future and still thought this was the best option. how fucked up would that be huh
#the pale king#hollow knight#i wrote this at the middle of the night and a row of my keys (and spacebar) occasionally doesn't work you have no idea how annoying that is#my art#? i mean there is some

So there's a bit of subtle storytelling in the game that I've always really liked and it's the subtext present in the Voidheart charm.
The lead up to getting the Voidheart charm is Ghost going through the birthplace cutscene where they hear Pale King say the lines that seem to exemplify his view on void's hollowness in the game and I want to focus in on one of those lines in particular, that being:
"No will to break"
The line stuck out to me because of the description of the Voidheart charm:
"An emptiness that was hidden within, now unconstrained. Unifies the void under the bearer's will."
What I like about it is that it not only appears to confirm that Ghost isn't hollow and couldn't have been hollow given that the charm works off of their existing will, but it also subtly implies that PK's view of hollowness was completely wrong given that it is their void, that it is that hidden emptiness, that allows Ghost to unify the void under their will. It's a very small piece of the game's overall storytelling but I really enjoy the kind of subtly at play in it.
#hollow knight#hollow knight analysis#the knight#ghost#pale king#lmao I mean I could also just be reading it wrong but idk#I like subtle little tells in dialogue and descriptions#chili rambles about bugs
