I just got a new phone.

Now, I’m generally not an early adopter, especially with phones - I kept my old Palm Treo until the housing had literally worn through and you could see the circuitry.

Moreover, I’ve been generally happy with my old phone - a Google Pixel 5. Unfortunately, the USB port has been getting a bit dodgy, and my carrier offered me a really good deal, so... well, I bit the bullet and got a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4.

First, the bad. I am not exactly happy with the battery life. Daily usage really eats into it fast. Fortunately, I’m well-accustomed to having phones with low battery life, and have no dearth of charging banks and cords. So NBD, but if it’s like this out of the box... well, we’re talking early iPhone levels here, you know?

And while the external screen is bigger than the prior versions, to he point of maybe being usable, it’s far from actually being useful. I have yet to figure out how to get it to display enough notification information that I don’t need to open my phone - my old phone, I could hit a single button to see what made my phone ping, now all I can get is a little dot telling me there’s something. Possibly that can be rectified, but I’ve yet to figure out how.

Perhaps more importantly, I cannot take pictures as easily. When it’s folded, your only realistic option s to take selfies, which seems... not great.

Now, a certain amount of my issues are just that it’s an unfamiliar phone and I’m getting used to it, so there’s that. And I will learn. Though I will also admit that as I get older, the less patience I have for interfaces with a learning curve - it just seems so pointless to learn all the shortcuts and find all the settings for a device I’ll replace in a few years. I wish the industry could just NOT fuck around with these things and let me have my muscle memory.

Okay. So the good.

Now, this is one of the first worthwhile phones with a flexible MOLED screen. Although you can tell where the hinge is, it’s seamless and does not detract from usage at all. Assuming this ages well, I’m quite happy with it.

The form factor is great - it fits in my pocket quite nicely, and also fits very well in even the smallest of purses. Rejoice, you can have a smartphone and a tiny handbag.

Unfolded, it’s a perfectly good, full-featured smartphone. I haven’t lost anything compared to the Pixel. The camera seems quite good, it has plenty of memory, sound quality is good... they didn’t sacrifice anything that I can tell.

The biggest plus, though, is the feel. The housing is solid, the hinge seems great.. and most of all, it closes with a satisfying little thump. Finally, I can actually hang up my phone again. I can decide I’m done with whatever I’m doing and close the phone. Not a tiny little power button, just the sound of a phone closing.

It doesn’t hurt that opening it makes me feel like I could call Mr. Scott and have him beam me up, either.

Since its beginnings as a peculiar offshoot of Netgear, Arlo has found its rhythm with an excellent selection of wireless and weatherproof smart cams. The high-resolution Arlo Pro 2 tops our list of the best outdoor surveillance cameras in 2019 – and it is also a good choice for indoor surveillance.

In April Arlos became Ultra 4K came and marked the first shot in a next generation fight for the supremacy of the UHD Smart Cam. Additional functions are performed directly by the Arlo Ultra 4K. A built-in headlamp enables Arlo to claim color night vision support, while noise-canceling two-way audio and a siren in front of the camera further strengthen the Arlo Pro 3's security requirements. It also benefits from the clean magnetic charging system that we got to know in April that promises a battery life of up to six months between charges.

A better choice for Arlo upgrades

Visually, the cameras and the SmartHub of the Arlo Pro 3 look identical to those we saw when we tested the Arlo 4K Ultra. This is not a bad thing, as Arlo's much-copied design is one of the more compact and attractive systems. The curvy all-plastic case is sturdy enough to withstand the elements, while installation is simplified with a strong magnetic mounting system (a screw option is also available). A partially flattened base also allows the camera to be placed indoors on a shelf or desktop. In short, you can install the Arlo Pro 3 anywhere.

The often copied design by Arlo is one of the more compact and attractive systems.

It also includes Arlo's latest SmartHub (VMB4540), which enables the network connection between the cameras and your router. Again, it looks identical to the slimmer device introduced with the Arlo Ultra 4K, but a closer look reveals important differences. External video storage for camera recordings is available, but this model enables it via a single USB 2.0 port instead of the microSD slot equipped with the Arlo Ultra. This is good news for surveillance video horters who benefit from storage capacities of up to 2 TB. A step in video quality

In use, the Arlo Pro 3's 2K image quality is a noticeable improvement over the previous generation camera (and a huge leap over the 720p that is supported by the original Arlo system). While it's not quite as clear as Arlo Ultra 4K or wired Nest Cam IQ models, it's still very good indeed. With the improved resolution, you can take advantage of the camera's 12x digital zoom without pictures instantly falling into a blurry chaos. However, if you slide beyond the 3x zoom, the quality will be noticeably affected. Arlo Pro 3 is equipped with an intelligent automatic zoom and tracking function, which is practical for security monitoring. As we found with the Arlo Ultra 4K, the resolution of the camera is unfortunately reduced to 1080p when the function is activated.

Night vision offers greater sharpness and clarity than many competitors.

We found that the image quality is balanced during the day, with precise colors and good contrast. Arlo's Auto HDR feature makes it one of the few smart cameras we've tested indoors that avoid overexposure near bright windows. This means that you take pictures of people looking through your windows to see if you are at home. The 160-degree field of view is wide enough to cover all but the most spacious rooms or huge gardens, and the distortion of the fisheye is negligible.

At night, the Arlo Pro 3 color night vision feature requires the camera's built-in headlight to be illuminated. The resulting images are certainly more natural than the creepy standard black and white images produced by competitors. While the range is good, color night vision suffers from the blurring and noise that typically occur in high ISO photography. When the headlight is off, the camera returns to a standard night vision setting. The lighting range is good here too, and while monochrome images are a bit noisy, the night vision of Arlo Pro 3 offers greater clarity and clarity than many of its competitors.

In other cases, there is a delay of up to 30 seconds.

Since both cameras broadcast 2K video live at the same time, we noticed some temporary performance problems during stress tests. About every 20 seconds, both streams were replaced by a black screen for one second before the livestream was restored. When local 2K streaming is disabled, performance has improved, although we still see flickering from time to time. Since both cameras report a good signal, we can only assume that it is a problem with the network bandwidth or a processing bottleneck. Maybe it would have been better to maintain Arlo Ultra's 802.11ac connectivity?

Our opinion

While the Arlo Ultra 4K made headlines with its striking UHD video resolution, we think the Arlo Pro 3 is a more worthy and economical successor to our favorite smartcam of the past two years, the Arlo Pro 2. It is certainly not cheap, but the improved one Image quality, the integrated security functions and the simple app control of the Arlo Pro 3 make it an excellent choice for home surveillance. If you enjoy investing in a monthly subscription, you can take advantage of an expanded suite of useful A.I. Features that make the Arlo Pro 3 one of the smartest systems around. In the meantime, owners of Arlo systems of the first and second generation have a reasonable way to update their cameras and / or SmartHubs. We were waiting for a competitive Arlo Pro 2 smart cam to hit the bar – maybe it was inevitable that the Arlo Pro 3 would do the job.

Is there a better alternative?

Few intelligent cameras offer Arlo's convincing mix of simplicity, quality and versatility. With a limited budget, however, there are numerous cheaper systems available. The Swann Smart Security Camera ($ 129) is a solid budget device with similar wireless connectivity and weatherproof protection to Arlo and 1080p HD imaging. At the premium end of the market, the Arlo 4K Ultra ($ 599 for a 2-camera bundle) definitely beats the Arlo Pro 3 in terms of video quality, but upgrades should be aware that they can be used in new cameras and a replacement SmartHub investments have to use UHD video. The Cam Cam Outdoor ($ 399) and Nest Cam IQ Indoor ($ 299) cameras are great performers that lack the versatility and value of the Arlo Pro 3.

How long it will take?

Arlo Pro 3 was developed to withstand the hard temperament of mother nature with operating temperatures between -20 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius. So expect the hardware to be robust. In terms of software, Arlo continues to publish improvements and optimizations for all Arlo systems. We therefore expect the owners to live a long and happy life with the Arlo Pro 3.

Should you buy it

In today’s episode of “Finsterhund is a complete dumbass”

So you all know that my friend gave me a USB charging cable for my Nexus 5 (he thought it was high quality because it was metallicy braided and looked nice. It wasn’t him deliberately sabotaging me. That thing was expensive) Right?

And after two months of use the dang thing MELTED and charred black and warped the case of my phone and the usb charging port. Rendering it “really bad at charging properly,” right?

And it liked to melt charging cables until I wiped all the burnt charging cable out of it with rubbing alcohol, but even after you had to bend the cables around behind so that the pins connected, right?

And then we ordered a replacement for the charging port (a small ribbon board cable) off Amazon Prime (yuck. But bear with me) Right?

But the one that came was not like the photo (of the official part) and instead was a cheap (and on top of that secondhand) knockoff that I thought bricked my phone for two hours, right?

And my friend said he would send it back to get it replaced, right?

But he put it off because it wasn’t important because you can put that off for three months except it was my phone that I needed to use so it actually was important, right?

So anyways, today when we were going back from the doctor appointment we passed a phone repair shop and I begged to go because I’m sick of needing to tape the charging cord taut to the back of the phone just to get a charge.

So in there this guy is all “okay I can replace this part or you can just buy an entire Nexus 5 for thirty extra dollars”

And since I am full of pride (and embarrassment at needing to go to a place to fix it for me because I know exactly how to do it myself. I mean no disrespect to this guy. He’s working the EXACT JOB I’d be most suited for if I actually got a job if not for my inability to do things by myself and talk to people. I respect the hustle. I just feel a lot of shame for needing to be on the other side of things) and didn’t want to pay someone the service fee for something that at the time (because he didn’t know that part was removable) I thought I knew more about than he did, and because I was mad that the replacement part costed a fraction of the service price but I didn’t have it because my friend put that off, and because I was desperate, and because I stupidly thought that “thirty dollars isn’t that much money” Andy, that is three meals at McDonalds it MOST DEFINITELY IS a lot of money, I ended up buying the full Nexus 5. So now I have two Nexus 5s. My old one, and the “new” one. The logic was that $30 isn’t a lot (it is) and that my old phone had a messed up GPS and the mic didn’t work. (which is true)

The new one is white, and for some reason the designers of the Nexus 5 decided that because the phone was white it needed to have a white speaker in its BLACK screen. And it’s dirty. There was also damage to the screen, case, etc and it looks dirtier because: white. TLDR I loved my old phone better. Which makes sense because I bonded with it.

So I’m sitting here, cleaning the new phone, grossed out by the level of grime in the headphone jack, I use like 20 q-tips wiping it down with rubbing alcohol, and thinking “damn it why was I such a little baby and unable to swallow my pride and then have three McDonalds meals Andy you absolute dumbass.”

So I decided to just switch it out.

And... the mic worked...

on both of them...

Oh... oh no...

So that was a thing.

So now my black Nexus 5 (with the white Nexus 5 charging port) seems to be charging perfectly fine, and the mic is working.

And the white Nexus 5 (with the black Nexus 5 charging port) seems to be... charging a little bit better... (but I suspect it’s my brain playing tricks on me) and the mic is ALSO working.

So full disclosure that I am using a borrowed charging cable for my original Nexus 5 (now with the new charging port) and am using the same bent charging cable for the new Nexus 5 (with the old charging port) The new charging port charges normally, no messing with the cable. The old charging port requires the good old fashioned “bend it backwards painfully in order to connect the pins” trick.

So I feel like a complete idiot.

And now have three dated smartphones with issues. All of them released in Fall of 2013. A weird coincidence.

For reference the other is an iPhone 5 that I ran into the ground. Physically, its body is perfect. Screen? FLAWLESS. This was the first smartphone I ever had as a lower class brat who was always the last to get new tech. This was the most expensive thing I owned for a very long time and that shows. I also had to go through hell to get it. The only issue is that Apple intentionally bricks their old phones so now the little guy can’t hold a charge for the life of him. You ruined a perfectly good phone that I took good care of Apple! You nerfed my boy! I’ll never buy Apple products again!

So around the time when it became obvious that Apple had nerfed the older iPhones, my friend who got a Google Pixel gave me his old Nexus 5. And I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it. It was bigger, I found it easier to transfer files, and I just liked it. Android felt cozier. I’m truly sorry. I took to it fairly quickly considering how hard it is for me to make the technology jump when it comes to operating systems and similar. My love and familiarity with Windows XP has been enough to prevent me from making the jump to Linux despite how much I resent Windows 10 and how it bricked a laptop of mine, but I went from iOS to Android in a matter of months.

The point being is I have a beloved old iPhone that can’t hold a charge anymore, a Nexus 5 that has been owned by at least two other people (my friend got it secondhand) and then it stopped working correctly because a charging cable melted it.

My friend told me to just get a new phone, but I told him I didn’t want to spend $500 on a Google Pixel when I was perfectly happy with my Nexus 5.

He then let me know that a Google Pixel is actually $900 which pretty much confirmed that I would never get one.

In the end, this second Nexus 5 was under $100. Which is a far cry from $900, and the likely almost as high cost of other new phones. I feel stupid for just not getting the replacement part, but at least I have a second in case anything happens to it.

I’m not hurting for money this month so it just means no spending hundreds on commissions. I’m sad that I will put off commissions again, as I did promise artists at the convention two months ago, but money is tight and everyone should understand that.

I feel better that my phone has been secured, but anxious that when I buy a new cord it’s just going to melt the charging port again. Apparently cheap USB cables will do that to a Nexus 5? I’ve been through like three before that and it’s never happened so I guess it was just THIS one. The evil cord from 7 Eleven. (why would you betray me 7 Eleven!!??
