This cultural phenomenon has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing dynamics of the digital age and connecting Filipinos across borders. In this article, we will delve into the roots of Pinoy TV, its evolution, and its impact on the cultural tapestry of the Philippines.
The Roots of Pinoy TV
Pinoy TV has its roots deeply embedded in the rich history and cultural heritage of the Philippines. Television in the country traces back to the early 1950s, with the establishment of the first TV station, Alto Broadcasting System (ABS), in 1953. Maria Clara at Ibarra: Isang Obra
You’ve done it again, GMA. KUDOS. Lemme just say this. I am one full-blooded Kapamilya. But when I was younger, I remember watching and being obsessed with Mulawin, Majika, and especially the original 2006 Encantadia. Feeling ko forte talaga ng GMA ang “Telefantasya” genre. And now, another timely gem has been created. Isang napakagandang proyekto, GMA. Ngayon na lamang muli napakapanood ng serye na likha ninyo, and I’m really glad I did. 🫶🏻
Why I LOVE this teleserye??! Ang paksa ng drama ay napapanahon at edukasyonal para sa ating lahat. Liban sa kilig at mga nakakatuwang hirit, parang isang pagbabalik-tanaw at pagpapaalala sa mga nakalipas na panahon. Also, casting was SPOT ON!!! Barbie was perfect for the role, Klay (sobrang kaaliw! #feminism #notooppression besh). The perfect representation of what a Pinoy youth should be now. Crisostomo Ibarra giving me extra oppa vibez. Sa pagkakatanda ko super crush ko na before si Dennis Trillo sa Majika pero omg, tinatangi ko po kayo ginoo (ipagpatawad mo, Ate Jen hihi). The super talented Julie Ann as Maria Clara was surprising for me. ‘Twas actually unbeknownst to me that she can act like this. I’m amazed! I know she sings, she dances, and she can act too? (sige ipinapaubaya ko na talaga si Rayver ahahaha). Sa totoo lang, nahihirapan na ko pag nakikita ko silang umiiyak ni Barbie. I’m like, unli luha lang mga amiga? 🙌🏼 Also, I am now understanding why David Licauco has everyone in his clutches. (yung kaibigan ko, pipilahan ka talaga eh. see you soon kapag makakapaglamierda kami jan sa maynila hahaha). Fidel, isa kang tunay at tapat na amigo. Talk about character development, right? 🥲
Padre Salvi, Padre Damaso, pinakulo niyo po ang aking dugo, pinabilis ninyo ang tibok ng aking puso sa inis at galit. It’s my first time seeing Juancho Triviño as an actor. I know I knew him from somewhere, so ayun hubby nga pala siya ni Joyce Pring. He fits the role of PS to a tee! The amount of hate and disgust for the character just showed his effective acting. Of course, you would expect greatness with the likes of Mr. Tirso Cruz III, but I must say these younger actors leveled up too.
Andrea Torres as Sisa?! Speechless. 👏🏻 Dasurv ng award at recognition sa binigay niya dito. And, it is always a delight to see Rocco Nacino. The perfect Elias. Mahilig talaga ako sa chinito maputi ganyan pero for some reason, I crush you po.🫶🏻 (pasintabi rin kay mareng Mel wew?).
All in all, sobrang naaliw at napasaya ako ng kwentong ito. Sana ay makalikha pa po kayo ng mga proyektong katulad nito. Dinggin niyo kami! ✊🏼😉 Viva Las Filipinas!! 🇵🇭 Sana nga ay tuluyan na tayong makalaya. 🙏🏼

I love that all the stuff I had seen about Brothers Karamazov is about how it's deeply influential literature, inspirational, philosophical, etc and thus far it has been a teleserye of magnificent proportions. Soap opera ass shenanigans.
Not an insult btw I am enthralled. My Pinoy ass is loving this. I would gossip about this to my neighbors. Would have read it sooner if this was how it was marketed.

8 shows to get to know me better
thanks for the tag @little-orcs-hurrarrumm !! <33
ABBOTT ELEMENTARY (2021-)
Tumblr media
my current fave!! i’ve been seeing it a lot both here and in twitter literally the first months it started airing, but i’ve been busy and all that. binged the whole thing recently, and it deserves a long run! story’s well-written, scenes are very wholesome and fun to watch, and what an amazing ensemble of cast and characters!!
DIRTY LINEN (2023-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pinoy pride!! tfw when you watch a trailer and you just Know the entire thing’s gonna be good? (and they knew what they were doing with those posters)
i’ve never seen a teleserye i truly love since the killer bride and la vida lena, like, this is the first time i’ve been invested in a filo show so far (there’s just something abt revenge girlboss dramas)
neways, international fans can still watch it thanks to the subtitles in iwanttfc and youtube. but i hope filipinos love and promote it even more.
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2019-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i thought i would be Normal abt it, now i’m a changed person. a mutual rb’ed a gifset of memo being insane with the “and if one day he doesn’t, well...”, and i was Intrigued so i binged all three seasons in one day.
i have to confess that i finally tuned in because of taika, but i’ve found reasons to stay: nadja, guillermo, matt, harvey, the characters, the silly plot, have i mentioned nadja and guillermo?
YONDERLAND (2013-2016)
Tumblr media
ult fave! this show just GETS me!! i wasn’t there when it aired, so i’m not really sure if it’s a hit in the uk or us but i don’t think i would’ve discovered this show if i didn’t watch ghosts. deserved a lot of awards and recognition. just a silly goofy show that i didn’t and wouldn’t want to know what’s happening most of the time, and i love and enjoyed every single bit. society needs more shows like this one but this masterpiece will never be replaced imo
BBC GHOSTS (2019-)
Tumblr media
i’m still in denial that this show is ending, but i think it’s their time. i would still definitely watch fillers after fillers as they drag the whole thing, but just like yonderland— that’s not very idiots of them to do so.
nevertheless, it’s a very comforting show! love how they truly understand the characters they write and portray. a found family of a bunch of dead losers, what more could you want!!
THE FLASH (2014-2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
arguably the first fandom i’ve been kinda active in after my long hiatus from fandoms i think ? (i was more of an observer than a contributor back then)
the first seasons were so good. i miss westallen so much. eobard was so cunty. harrisco were my first attempts in giffing and editing in general. i still love them, but idk if i’m gonna be able to actually finish the show (i stopped after s7)
OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH (2022-)
Tumblr media
actually a great show, but no longer one of my faves bc the fandom ruined some things for me sorry. it was fun waiting for ep 7 and 8 to air, but i do wish i was there since the beginning when it was still fun and quiet. neways, i miss the brainrot that possessed me to learn giffing.
GOOD OMENS (2019-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was there when this baby was born but didn’t get the chance to be involved until they’re like a toddler. the brainrot was insane when i used up my savings for the funkos, the original books and the script book like !! i miss them so much and i can’t express how excited i am to see them again this summer !!!
tagging @larryrickard @autisticharrywells @spineless-lobster @baynton @bluntbeard @moondogss @fiovske @horuuuuu and anyone who wants to give it a go! <33

Viola pre-embrace was really into classic Goth music, like Bauhaus! Afer her embrace however she had a big shift in personality and traits and she'd probably prefer black metal--growling and all. Some things in common between her life and unlife though would be her love for books (she's got a collection of books on occult knowledge, gothic romance, horror and thrillers, and also issues of The Sandman comic by Neil Gaiman). She did not grow up with a computer nor a TV in her house (her neighbors had a TV but she did not really care) so I don't think she'd really be into TV nor social media.
For Art. . .
Art is very much into alt-rock (a la Incubus or APC? which is more like hard rock) and classic Pinoy rock and other tunes, like Eraserheads or APO Hiking Society. At home, he's also usually playing reggae or traditional Filipino music while painting or some shit. He is not into reading and barely has access to books but he really loved Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis," which he read as a teenager (it resonated with him being trans PLEASE). He used to be really into LiveJournal and had his own website where he'd post about his college projects and personal life--nowadays though he doesn't care for social media. If he had a computer he'd just watch YouTube rips of Jackass. His favorite shit to watch on TV was Nickelodeon and Animal Planet/National Geographic.
For Carmensita. . .
Carmensita is THE goth girl and music nerd of the group. She loves the classics, gothic rock, gothic metal, and more. If you hear some shit like "I Don't Wanna Be Me" by Type O Negative echoing through the warrens--that's how you know she's home. She hates reading long swathes of text, it's difficult for her and gives her a headache, so she doesn't read for fun... though she does ike reading blog posts and random shit people write on the Internet. She would be an avid Tumblr user I just know it. She also loved watching random bullshit on MTV; trashy reality TV is PRIME ENTERTAINMENT for her.
For Alin. . .
Alin loves house music SO much. Walking down the runway this shit is what's on her mind. She's got a nice audio setup and everything... the hybrid CD and casette tape player is her baby. This girl loves written art... she keeps many poetry books, novellas, short stories, and more in her home--most pertaining to themes of change, romance, and transness. She's also got lots of art and photography books. She would ABSOLUTELY be an Instagram user in this day and age oh my god. She also did not grow up with a computer and never had to use one until she came to the USA, but she loves being able to share her life and work with people and sees social media as a tool for this. Her favorite shit on TV would be classic Pinoy teleseryes (soap operas), public access television, world culture shows, etc.
Out of the other OCs; Booc (Tzimisce) and Buot Buktot (Baali, Viola's Sire) are kind of archaeic beings that have forgone worldly pleasures outside of carnal shit. THey would probably be into each other by the way. With Pusakal (Gangrel), although he definitely seems like something of a little vagrant who'd be into regular people shit, he's a bit of an enigma and really just prefers being a wild cat who eats people. He really actually just sleeps in trees and is small enough such that people don't really notice him up in the canopies you get me.

episode 11: the missing piece
***1/8/2024 - it is now the new year, and this is an attempt to get back into writing, putting these posts up, and emptying my more up to date drafts. for a time, I've had to switch viewing platforms that somehow messed up my momentum. it's also interesting to watch these episodes back, knowing the shape of the narrative and direction the more recent episodes have taken.
this episode is anatomy of a star creatives/star cinema romance, the beginnings of it, at least, and it's interesting to watch it unfold, fully aware of its intent.
around this time, we already knew this show was different from the rest, with the promised romance not being initially apparent, but we had no inkling just how game-changing this show would be. the creative team was employing, tried, and tested formulaic narrative devices, the recognizable, almost predictable kind, if you've watched pinoy teleseryes for a while. this was done on purpose, and not only applied to the love story of the show, but also, to the anti-heroes, friends, and side characters, even the conflict and their corresponding conflict resolutions. this was done with the agenda to reel us in, entice us with elements they know we buy into, love, and helplessly fall for, and when they have us, they change the way watch our favorite primetime shows. in hidsifgt, caroline's abduction is catharsis, but the tamest of conflicts, compared to the other conflicts we've seen, and the personal struggles and inner wars our characters continuously battle.
it is not without growing pains, but it works.
the hotel room makeover scene makes use of every device that is meant to create, milk, and display every bit of chemistry, donny, and belle share.
dear Lord, we had a field day with the whole hotel room bit of this episode!!! wherever we thought this shoe was going, we couldn't be more wrong. that's both laughable and exciting, how much we did not know.
this episode was stereotypical, save for donny and belle figuring in those stereotypical circumstances. the end of this episode is the first of many major shocks this show has in store for us. i remember thinking this is the first show of this kind from this unit that has outsmarted me. and i love the challenge.
