Sometimes, as much as I love internet communities and spaces, I really think a lot of people have spent so much time in sanitized, morally pure echo chambers that they lose sight of realism and life outside the internet.

I live in Alabama. My fiancée and I cannot hold hands down the street without fear of homophobic assholes. We have an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. We are one of the poorest states in the US with some of the lowest scores on metrics related to quality of life, including maternal mortality, healthcare, education, and violence. It’s not a coincidence that we are also one of the most red, one of the most Republican states in the Union. In 2017 the UN said the conditions in Alabama are similar to those in a third-world country.

Trump gave a voice to the most violently racist, sexist, xenophobic groups of people who, unfortunately for most of us in the Southern U.S., run our states and have only grown more powerful since his rise to power. The Deep South powers MAGA, and we all suffer for it.

We have no protections if they don’t come from the federal government.

I know people are suffering internationally and my heart is with them. However, this election is not just about foreign policy - we have millions of Americans right here at home living in danger, living in areas where they have been completely abandoned by their local leaders. We need this win.

No candidate is perfect, but for the first time in my voting lifetime I’m excited to vote. I’m excited for the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket because they are addressing the issues close to home. They’re advocating for education as the ticket to a better life, but without the crippling student debt. They’re advocating for the right to love who you love without fear and with pride. Kamala has always been pro-LGBT+ and so has Tim. Again, if you’re queer in the South, we don’t have support unless it comes from the federal government, and we absolutely will not have support if the Republicans regain the White House.

Kamala speaks in length about re-entry programs to reduce recidivism and help people who have been arrested and imprisoned regain their lives. Tim Walz supported restoring voting rights to felons. In the South, you know who comprise the majority of felons? Members of minorities. It’s one of the major tools of systemic racism and mass disenfranchisement, and arguably the modern face of slavery (there are some fantastic documentaries and books that explain the connection between the post-Reconstruction South and the disproportionate rates of imprisonment for BIPOC). Having candidates who recognize this and want to restore the freedom and rights to people who have come into contact with the criminal justice system? And keep them from having to go to prison in the first place? That’s refreshing. That’s exciting.

I would *love* to live in a country where women’s rights are respected, where LGBT+ rights and protections are a given, where we treat former criminals and individuals experiencing mental health crises with respect and dignity. I would *love* to live in a country where education is free of religious interference and each and every citizen is entitled to a fair start and equal opportunities.

But I don’t live in that country. Millions and millions of Americans find their rights and freedoms up for debate and on the ballot.

Project 2025 poses the largest threat to the future of our democracy as we know it. We are being called to fight for the future of our country.

We have to put on our oxygen masks first before we can help others.

You don’t have moral purity when you wash your hands of the millions of us who are still fighting for own freedoms right here.

The reality is that a presidential candidate is a best fit, and not a perfect fit. But comparatively speaking? Kamala is pretty damn close.

Okay, so this looked bad.

Well, actually, no. This looked hilarious. Who would've thought that the man who could pull all sorts of elegant aerial acrobatics in a clunky metal suit would turn into a newborn deer, all knock-kneed and wobbly, the minute you strapped ice skates on his feet?

The other Avengers had, for the most part, paired off: Steve with Wanda, Bruce with Pepper, Thor with Natasha (which, Thor on ice skates was also hilarity incarnate), and Sam with Bucky. It left Clint and Tony as the spares which wasn't all that surprising, and it meant that Clint got to stare at the billionaire genius do his best not to crack his pretty head open while Clint lazily circled the rink, just at home on ice skates as he'd been on the highwire as a teenager.

Eventually, he took pity on the other man, twisting around so that he was gliding backwards as he came up on Tony. "C'mon, shellhead, gimme your hands." The six-foot-three archer effortlessly glided over so that he was directly in front of Tony, still skating backwards so that they were face-to-face. He reached out with both hands, fingers curling in a grabby hands motion, trying to get Tony to give him his hands.

Tony, to his credit, gave Clint a skeptical look, even as he desperately tried not to overbalance and send himself pinwheeling across the ice. "Because you're so good at this, Merida?"

Clint snorted, his eyebrows arching. "Between the two of us who's the one skating backwards?"

Okay, fine, it may have been a stupid thing to say, but that wasn't the point, was it? The futurist gave the still-offered hands one more long look before he sighed long-sufferingly and reached out to put his hands in Clint's. The archer's long fingers immediately curled firmly around his hands and Tony found his tongue darting out to wet his lips before he swallowed. "Okay, so what now?"

Clint's lips spread in a smile when Tony finally gave in to the offer of help. "Now, I teach you how to skate. But first," Clint paused and readjusted his grip on the other man so that he was grasping the whole of his forearms instead. It would be easier to keep Tony standing that way, without risking snapping his wrists. "Alright, now stand up straight, feet aligned with your shoulders."

They had long since glided to a stop, so it wasn't all that difficult for Tony to straighten up, getting his legs under him and his skates straight. And with Clint supporting him he felt almost stable on the skates for the first time.

"See, not that hard." Clint smiled, and then chuckled as Tony rolled his eyes. "Okay, so you're going to push off, one foot at a time. Small strokes, and don't worry about running into me, I'll stay out of your way."

"Uh huh, small strokes, right." Tony had to bite back the retort he wanted to give to that, focusing instead on the whole... skating bit. His first couple of 'steps' were shaky, but it actually helped a lot that he had Clint's strong arms to brace himself against (and good God, the man's arms were all muscle, all that archery was seriously paying out dividends).

"Lookit that, we'll have you doing triple lutz's in no time."

"Hilarious, Barton. You ever consider giving up the whole Avenger thing to be a comedian? I feel like you could do well, you'd be a real hoot."

Clint rolled his eyes, but there was a grin on his face. "Y'know, I hadn't before, but now that you've mentioned I just may have to give it a whirl."

Every so often Clint was glancing back over his shoulder to make sure that he didn't run into anyone, but the majority of his attention was on Tony and keeping him upright. "Alright, so let's start working on lengthening that stride. The quicker we get you moving at speed the easier it gets." Skating slowly was a hell of a lot harder than skating at a good pace.

It took them a few minutes, but eventually Tony did get the hang of it. So much so that Clint had to shift so that they were skating side-by-side. At some point, his hand had slid down from Tony's forearm to his hand, their fingers tangled together.

"Legolas?"

"Hmmm?"

"Thanks for the help."

"Anytime, Gimli, anytime."

A/N: Obsessing over them going undercover, now. 

Barnes always wore a full glove to cover his prosthesis when going undercover. He dressed in an understated manner, ensuring his sartorial choices would allow for functionality and the ability to conceal numerous weapons on his person. Carter’s sources said they needed to be well-dressed enough to actually be allowed entry to the nightclub, but understated enough not to stand out or draw attention.

Barnes had a certain skill for blending in; there would be no way he would be made in amongst the crowd of sweating revelers.

Now, it took a lot to get any kind of visible reaction from Barnes, but when Wilson stepped out from the adjoining bathroom of the safehouse, dressed in a form-fitting suit, Barnes swore his mouth fell open.

Sure, he had seen Sam wear a suit before at Stark’s funeral, but that one was borrowed from someone else and did not fit right. Was too big on Sam. Didn’t accentuate his broad shoulders and chest properly; hid away his thick, strong arms. And the suit he wore to Steve’s memorial was not striking enough to draw Bucky’s attention away from Sam’s pretty, sad eyes at such a somber moment.

But this suit.

Holy fuck.

This suit fit like a suit should. It was tailored. It was perfect. Showed just how perfect Wilson was. Bucky needed to snap out of it before Sam noticed he was gawping.

Too late.

“From the way your jaw is on the floor, I’m gonna go ahead and assume this suit is the shit. I look good, eh?”

Barnes’ brain was on the verge of a short circuit. How was he going to focus on the job with Sam looking damn near edible? How was he going to focus when other people would notice just how delectable Sam was, too?

Without thinking, because of the imminent cerebral malfunction, Barnes just opened his mouth and said the first thing he could safely say.

“You can’t wear that.”

With a raised eyebrow, Wilson gave Bucky a questioning look and then said, “What?”

“That suit. You can’t wear it.”

“We’re undercover, Barnes.”

“I know, but all o’ this,” he said, gesturing toward Sam’s body with his hand. “This ain’t gonna work.”

Sam knit his brow in confusion.

“All of what? You’re wearing a suit, too.”

“You’re gonna get us made. Blow our cover.”

“Excuse me? Do I have to remind you that I’m a fuckin’ pro, Barnes?”

“I know you are, but you can’t wear that.”

“Why not? I mean, I’m not as good as you at hiding a shitload of concealed weapons, but this is fine. Plus, I look good.”

“That’s the problem,” said Bucky as he gestured his hand towards Sam once more. “You’re gonna blow our cover. You look too good. You’re gonna draw attention. How can I focus on the mission if I’m watching you?”

Surprise registered on Sam’s face a brief second.

“And why would you be watching me?”

Bucky realized what he had just said. He ran his flesh hand over the back of his neck.

“Because you look real good, Wilson,” he admitted. “When a guy looks like you, it’s distracting.”

Sam bit his bottom lip and Bucky said, “There, see. Shit like that lip bite. It’s — it’s too much. You’re too easy on the eyes. People are gonna notice you.”

“Okay, that’s a lot to process. You think I’m fine as fuck. That’s interesting for reasons I can’t get into with you right now, but come on, Barnes. What’re you sayin’? I’m gonna jeopardize the mission ‘cause my ass is fine? You look just as good in your suit.”

“I really don’t, but I can blend in. You can’t. You draw people’s attention. People are always lookin’ at you. You don’t get it. You’re so goddamn pretty, Wilson. And everyone’s eyes are gonna be on you, especially dressed in that suit, and if they’re watchin’ you, then I’ll be watchin’ them. I’m gonna be distracted. And that’ll put you in danger. I can’t put you in danger. I won’t.”

A softness set into Bucky’s eyes, and realization washed over Sam. He had caught Barnes stealing glances before when he thought Sam didn’t notice. Wilson figured he was just curious. But the look in his eyes right then told a different story: Barnes liked Wilson. He really liked him. And he was wearing real concern etched across his handsome face.

“Barnes.”

“I’m sorry. I’m bein’ irrational,” said Bucky when he saw that the other man had figured out his little secret: That he had it bad for Sam. “Forget it.”

“Barnes, come on, man.”

“Just forget what I said. It’s fine,” said Barnes as he moved to walk away. He needed fresh air. He needed to get away from Sam when Sam looked like that and stood too close and smelled so good.

“Buck.”

Hearing Sam say his nickname caused Barnes to stop in his tracks. He let his head dip a moment as Wilson moved closer.

“Hey,” said Sam gently as he placed a soft hand to Bucky’s arm. “I get it. But you don’t have to worry about me. I can take care of myself.”

But you don’t have to, Bucky thought. I can take care of you. I want to take care of you. You and only you.

He didn’t say a word. Instead, he relished in the feeling of Sam’s firm hand squeezing his arm.

“Let’s get through this mission. Get it done, and I promise you I’ll take this damn suit off so you can function again,” said Sam with a teasing tone that immediately changed the mood in the room.

“You can be such a little shit, you know that, right?” asked Barnes as he lifted his head and held Sam’s gaze.

Wilson had the audacity to shoot Barnes a blinding smile, lean in close to his ear, and whisper, “I know. Now, play your cards right, and after this mission, you might be the one who gets to take this suit off of me.”

Why, thank you! I got it at Hot Topic sometime last year. I actually have 2 because my ex husband bought it because he didn't realize I already had it. I really love all things related to Sailor Moon, so when I saw the new shirts hit the stores, I've been buying them to try and collect them all.
